Adele “Bubbles” Norman Fox, nee Daab, 84, died July 26, 2010 in Scarborough, Maine. She was born Oct. 24, 1925 in Columbia, the daughter of the late John Daab of Columbia and Adele Schein Daab of Waterloo. John Daab owned Daab’s Drug Store in downtown Columbia, the current location of Conrad Press / The Independent. He also raised chickens on a farm in rural Columbia. After their marriage, Adele Daab moved to Columbia and was employed as a schoolteacher and principal in the town. Mrs. Fox is survived by her children, Jonathan (Julia) Elbaum of Ottumwa Iowa and Burnsville, Minn., Danial Elbaum of Portland, Ore., Martha (Bill) Williamson of Falmouth, Maine; granddaughters Emma and Lily Elbaum and Charlotte Adele Williamson; a niece, Debbie Barber; and nephews David, Dirk and Dean Goldgar. She was preceded in death by a sisters, Vida Goldgar. Memorials may be made to the Southern Poverty law Center or Doctors Without Borders. Adele’s professional career included broadcasting, marketing and administration. Her career path began in the 1940s in St. Louis, where she was a producer, writer and on-air personality for KMOX radio. She later moved to New York City to accept a marketing position – traveling the country giving presentations on homemaking and entertaining. In the mid-1950s, she moved to Kokomo, Ind., to accept a position as a radio host. While there, she acted in the local theater guild where she met Ken Elbaum. They were married, had three children and moved to Dayton, Ohio. After the couple divorced in 1966, Adele took over ownership of the Gem City Employment Agency where she developed successful advertising campaigns for Stop And Go Stores. She then became the director of public relations for the community of Newfields, an experimental planned community intended to combat urban sprawl. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, she directed a public housing office funded by a CETA grant to promote fair housing practices in Trotwood, Ohio. She went on to become the assistant director of the Ohio Masonic Home, a retirement home in Springfield. During that time, she met Dr. Dale Fox. They were married and moved to Dayton, Ohio. After Dale’s death in 1995, Adele attended classes at Xavier University and volunteered as a docent at the Contemporary Arts Center. She moved to Portland, Maine in 2005. At the time of her death, she was living at Piper Shores, a retirement community outside of Portland. Adele was a lifelong reader and aficionado of the arts. She loved modern painting, jazz and classical music.

Anita Sue Siefert, nee Vollmer, 48, of Gahanna, Ohio, died July 31, 2010. She was born Dec. 2, 1961, the youngest sister of Dr. Liz (Vollmer) Boehm of the Waterloo Animal Hospital. Mrs. Siefert is survived by her husband Steve Siefert; sons John (Meredith), Stephen, Patrick and William; a grandson, James; her mother, Gloria Vollmer; sisters Liz (Dwight) Boehm of Waterloo and Amy (Greg) Fitzgerald; nephews Mitch Boehm, Alex and Grant Fitzgerald; and nieces Emma Boehm and Eliza Fitzgerald. Memorials may be made to Holy Spirit School Endowment Fund, 305 Spruce Hill Drive, Gahanna, Ohio, 43230.

Candace “Candy” Irene Patton, nee Wilson, 61, of Columbia, died July 30, 2010 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville following an extended illness. She was born Dec. 29, 1948. She married Melvin “Mel” Patton in 1970. He died in 2009 in a car accident. Mrs. Patton is survived by her mother, Grace (Merril), nee Stephens, Loyet of Highland; children Kim (Tedd) Bacott, Deron Patton and J.D. (Tara) Patton, all of Columbia; grandchildren Ryan, Caitlin, Ashley, J.T., Emma, Brittni, Kaitlyn, Kadence, Beau and Berlyn; sisters Debbie (Louie) Janik and Denise (Ritch) Keller, both of Columbia; a brother, Craig (Kim) Wilson of Greenville; brother-in-law, Larry (Diane) Patton of Belleville; and sister-in-law, Lynn Brower of Columbia. She was preceded in death by her father, Ross Wilson. She was a member of the Villa Hills Baptist Church, enjoyed the outdoors, caring for her horses, watching the sunset over her pond, sitting on the beach and spending time with her family and friends. Visitation is Sunday, Aug. 1, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Lawlor Funeral Home in Columbia. Funeral is Monday, Aug. 2, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Larry Patton officiating. Mrs. Patton will be buried at the Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to the Candy Patton Memorial Fund or the American Cancer Society.

Wilmarth Henrietta Holtman, nee Barbeau, 90, of Waterloo, died June 1, 2010 in St. Louis. She was born March 31, 1920, the daughter of the late George and Myrtle (nee Palmier) Barbeau. Mrs. Holtman is survived by her children, Constance (Joseph) Majka of Maeystown, Judith (Marvin) Oliver of Lenoir, NC., and Michelle (Kenneth) Wilson of Valrico, Fla; a sister, June Weatherly of Troy; and brothers Larry Barbeau of Pinckneyville and Dale Barbeau of Plano, Tex; along with seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Holtman was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Holtman; five brothers; and one sister. Visitation was at DeFabio Funeral. Mrs. Holtman was buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

Lori A. Brumfield, nee Barker, 53, of Waterloo, died June 1, 2010 in St. Louis. She was born June 1, 1957, the daughter of the late Alan and Peggy (nee Allen) Barker. Mrs. Brumfield is survived by her husband, Kevin E. Brumfield; children, Philip, Jacob and Taylor Brumfield; a sister, Lisa Barker; and a brother, David (Jennifer) Barker. She was preceded in death by a brother. Mrs. Brumfield was a retired registered nurse at veterans’ hospitals. A service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Society. Arrangements were handled by Quernheim Funeral Home.

Carlyle A. Schneider, 83, of Waterloo, died June 2, 2010 in Waterloo. He was born April 29, 1927 in St. Louis, Mo., the son of the late Aloysius Schneider and Leona (nee Susewind) Schneider Reichert. In keeping with Carlyle’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 12, at 11 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo with Pastor Tony Troup officiating. Mr. Schneider will be buried at a later date at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. Mr. Schneider is survived by his wife, Norma (nee Weatherford) Riddle Schneider; daughters Donna Kay (Terry) Lucas of Litchfield, Carlene Cortner of Red Bud and Renee (Robert) Voelker of Citrus Heights, Calif.; step-daughters Karen (Norman) Benedict of Folsom, Calif., Sandra (Ed) Grinder of Lake Station, Ind., and Karen (Greg) Grueninger of Columbia; a son, Lyle (Kandyce) Schneider of Roseville, Calif.; step-sons Raymond (Reta) Goessling of Folsom, Calif., and Jack Jr. (Debbie) Riddle of Columbia; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his step-father, Adam Reichert. Carlyle was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a life member of the VFW Post 7080 in Millstadt, a 15-year member of Columbia American Legion Post 581 and a 20-year member of Moose Lodge 1221 in Swansea. He attended Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo. In keeping with Carlyle’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 12, at 11 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo with Pastor Tony Troup officiating. Mr. Schneider will be buried at a later date at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. Memorials may be made to an organization which benefits United States veterans.

Dorothy K. Woodcock, nee Koch, 93, of Waterloo, died June 4, 2010 in St. Louis. She was born March 29, 1917, the daughter of the late Gustav and Anna (nee Wernicker) Koch. Mrs. Woodcock is survived by her children, Richard (Carol) Woodcock and Jean Woodcock; grandchildren Tina (Errol) Johanning and Tricia (Chris) Lutman; great-grandchildren Evan and Eli Johanning and Lydia Lutman; and a sister-in-law, Lena Woodcock; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Woodcock; an infant daughter; sisters Anna Rippelmeyer, Elizabeth Stahl and Frieda Steinmann; and brothers Gustav, Fred, Henry, Charles and Alvin Koch; along with sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Mrs. Woodcock was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Wartburg. She enjoyed spending time with her family, sewing, quilting, crocheting and gardening. Visitation is Sunday, June 6, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Monday, June 7, at 2 p.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Wartburg with Pastor Stuart Rethwisch officiating. Mrs. Woodcock will be buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church’s Memorial Fund.

Francis M. Purcell, 87, of Waterloo, died June 4, 2010 in St. Louis, Mo. He was born June 8, 1922 in Coulee City, Wash., the son of the late Wade and Florence (nee McCann) Purcell. Mr. Purcell is survived by his wife, Bessie (nee Nutt) Purcell; children Judy (Steve) Davis, Lori (Will) Hesterberg, Mark (Gail) Purcell, Arleen (George) Hof and Karla (Mark) Cornick; a brother, Jim (Barbara) Purcell; half-brother, Wade Purcell Jr.; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; along with sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his step-mother, Anne Purcell. Mr. Purcell was a member of the American Legion and the St. Louis Theater Organ Society. He attended Evangel Assembly of God in Columbia. Visitation is Monday, June 7, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Tuesday, June 8, at 9:30 a.m., at Concord Presbyterian Church in Waterloo with Pastor Wayne Welborn officiating. Mr. Purcell will be buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. Memorials may be made to Life Network or Focus On The Family.

Alice Mary Priscilla Sunderman, 92, of Waterloo, formerly of Columbia, died June 6, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville. She was born Aug. 11, 1917, in Columbia, the daughter of the late William and Louisa (Schlegel) McConkey. Alice married Bernard W. Sunderman in 1939 in Columbia. He died in 1998. Mrs. Sunderman graduated from Columbia High School and the Cosmetology School of East St. Louis. She had owned a beauty shop. Later, she and her husband operated Sunderman's Garage on Bottom Ave. in Columbia for many years. Alice was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Columbia, a friend of Christ Community Church in Columbia and the Columbia Senior Citizens. Mrs. Sunderman is survived by a daughter, Margie (Jesse) Ellis of Largo, Fla.; daughter, Mary Lou (Norm) Jatho of Waterloo; son, James B. Sunderman of Columbia; grandchildren Donna (Ken) Sanger of Madison, Ala., Steve (Gina) Jatho of Vancouver, Wash., London (Peter) Vroom of Pinellas Park, Fla., Kristen (Tim) Troup of Red Bud and Nathan Sunderman of Columbia; great-grandchildren Sarah and Emileigh Sanger, Moriah, Anika and Emma Jatho; sisters-in-law Lorraine McConkey of Columbia, Ruth McConkey of Chesterfield, Mo., and Pauline Sunderman of Mascoutah; and a brother-in-law, Vernon Sunderman of Bellingham, Wash.; along with nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by brothers August and William McConkey; a sister, Florence Huch; daughter, Bonnie Sue Sunderman; and a grandchild, Scott Ellis. Visitation is Tuesday, June 8, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Lawlor Funeral Home in Columbia. Funeral is Wednesday, June 9, at 11 a.m., at Lawlor’s with Rev. Matthew Friz, officiating. Mrs. Sunderman will follow in the Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to the Columbia Senior Nutrition Site or the Columbia American Legion Park Endowment Fund.

Lafreda “Country” Jackson, 75, of Dupo, died June 8, 2010 at her residence. She was born May 19, 1935, the daughter of the late Covie and Onamay (nee Spence) Riggs. Mrs. Jackson is survived by her children, Sharon Alexander, Jeffrey Jackson, Nicole Warren and Paula Gerou; a sister, Louise Travis; brother, John Wayne Riggs; grandchildren Jennifer Carrieri, Heather Esmon, Christopher Alexander, Joshua Jackson, Chase Gerou and Kaitlyn Gerou; and great-grandchildren Christa, Briana, Taylor, Madison, Alyssa, Hailey and Zachary; along with other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Jackson. Visitation is Monday, June 14, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Dashner-Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo. Memorials may be made to the Dupo VFW Post 6368
