Frances Birkla
Hornettown Road resident Frances Ethel Birkla died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at her home. She was 73.
Mrs. Birkla was born March 2, 1926, in Lexington, Kentucky to John and Mary Helms Tucker.
She and Theodore "Ted" Birkla were married July 1, 1991, in Nashville. He survives.
Mrs. Birkla had worked at RCA in Indianapolis for 25 years before retiring in 1989.
She had attended Shiloh Baptist Church in Franklin. Mrs. Birkla enjoyed working with flowers.
Other survivors include a daughter, Kenna Dawn Shaw of Duck River, Tennessee; four grandchildren, Francie Hubbard, Mary Skinner, David C. Shaw II and Kylee Matthew; and four great-grandchildren, Jacie Hubbard, Phillip Hubbard, Toots Matthew and Miss D. Skinner.
The Reverend Dan Smith led a service Saturday afternoon, May 29, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was in that community’s East Hill Cemetery.

Edwin Galloway
Whispering Pines Road resident Edwin "Anthony" Galloway died Wednesday afternoon, May 26, 1999, at Morgan County Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. He was 26.
Mr. Galloway was born November 29, 1972, in Indianapolis to Edwin Galloway and Jeanette Brosmer Galloway. His father survives in Brown County.
He had worked as a welder at Indy Railway Service for two years.
Mr. Galloway was a member of St. Joe’s Catholic Church in Indianapolis.
Other survivors include his step-mother, Robin Galloway of Brown County; and a brother, John W. Galloway of Brown County.
A service was conducted Tuesday morning, June 1, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Indianapolis.
Family Funeral Care in Indianapolis was in charge of arrangements.

Patty Jackson
Brown County native Patty L. Kritzer Jackson died Tuesday afternoon, May 25, 1999, at Community Hospital North in Indianapolis. A resident of that city, she was 70.
Mrs. Jackson was born October 29, 1928, in Nashville to Francis V. Kritzer and Esther Campbell Kritzer. Her mother survives in Nashville.
She was married to Philip R. Jackson. He survives in Marion County.
Mrs. Jackson had worked as an office manager at Alcon Corporation in Indianapolis.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Other survivors include a brother, Max Kritzer of Nashville; a niece, Kaybe Evans of Iowa; a nephew, Kendall Kritzer of State Road 135 North; four great-nieces; and a great-nephew.
A service was conducted Friday afternoon, May 28, at the Bond-Mitchell Funeral Home on State Road 135 North.
Burial was in Nashville’s Greenlawn Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 7363 East 21st Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46219.

Charles Miller
Charles R. Miller, the father of Nashville resident Steven P. Miller, died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers in Beech Grove. A resident of Greenwood, he was 73.
Mr. Miller was born September 18, 1925, in Paulding, Ohio to Charles and Amanda Anspach Miller.
He was married to Mary E. Vest. She survives.
Mr. Miller had worked as a manager at General Car and Truck Leasing for 12 years, retiring in 1986.
He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Southport Masonic Lodge and Indianapolis Scottish Rite.
Mr. Miller was a United States Navy veteran of World War II.
Other survivors include two daughters, Helen M. Gomez and Deborah K. Phillips, both of St. Louis, Missouri; two other sons, Michael C. Miller of Indianapolis and James A. Miller of Dallas, Texas; two sisters, Barnetta Sutton and Joyce E. Huseby, both of Paulding, Ohio; and seven grandchildren.
The Reverend Don Crismon led a service Saturday afternoon, May 29, at Forest Lawn Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Home’s State Road 135 North Chapel.
Entombment was in Johnson County’s Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes or the National Kidney Foundation.

Jewel W. Rogers
Jewel Wayne Rogers, the father of Brown County residents Clover Phillips and Diane Scott, died Sunday, May 23, 1999, in Indianapolis. A resident of Franklin, he was 64.
Mr. Rogers was born May 17, 1935, in Little Rock, Arkansas to Joseph Earl and Dorothy Lee Garwood Rogers.
He enjoyed gardening.
Mr. Rogers is also survived by two other daughters, Brenda Moore of Franklin and Shana Swabb of Williamsport, Pennsylvania; a brother, Ed Rogers of Franklin; a sister, Mary Crumm of Ohio; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
The Reverend Larry Scott conducted a service Tuesday, May 25, at the Nineveh Christian Church.
Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin was in charge of arrangements.

Fred Schell Jr.
Fred C. Schell Jr., the brother of Morgantown area resident George Herbert Schell, died Monday, May 24, 1999, at Morgan County Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. A resident of that city, he was 86.
Mr. Schell was born April 8, 1913, in Indianapolis to Fred C. and Addie Mnu Schell.
He was married to Joy Evelyn Phillips. She survives in Morgan County.
Mr. Schell had worked as a machinist at Detroit Diesel Allison in Indianapolis before retiring.
He had been a member of the Methodist church.
Other survivors include three sons, Melvin Schell of Kissimmee, Florida, Philip Schell of Salter Path, North Carolina and David Schell of Martinsville; six daughters, Dolores Day of Paragon, Carol Maxwell, Rita Laymon, Linda Burt and Karen Randolph, all of Martinsville, and Barbara Moore of Fortville; another brother, William Schell of Lafayette; 25 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
The Reverend James Walker conducted a service Wednesday afternoon, May 26, at Costin Funeral Home in Martinsville.
Burial was in that city’s New South Park Cemetery.

Jane B. Wright
Nashville native Jane B. Wright died Monday, May 24, 1999, at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis. A resident of Greenwood, she was 69.
Mrs. Wright was born April 12, 1930, in Nashville to Levi and Patricia Jane Petro Bohall.
She had formerly lived in Mooresville.
Mrs. Wright was a homemaker. She was a member of the Living Hope Christian Fellowship in Greenwood.
Survivors include two sons, Harold O. Wright of Indianapolis and David D. Wright of Stilesville; two daughters, Joan E. Edwards of Greenwood and Theresa A. Lusby of Indianapolis; a sister, Florence Martindale; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Private services were conducted by the Reverend Richard Francis.
Burial was at Valhalla Memory Gardens in Bloomington.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lupus Society.

B.J. Arnold
Spearsville area resident William Jack "B.J." Arnold drowned in a small pond near his home Sunday evening, June 6, 1999. He was 23.
Mr. Arnold was born August 23, 1975, in Bloomington to Kenny William and Jacqueline A. Windle Arnold. They survive in Brown County.
He and his fiancee, Kristiann Lee Gaskins, were to be married June 19.
Mr. Arnold was graduated from Brown County High School in 1994.
He was a member of the school’s varsity football squad.
Mr. Arnold had worked at Jungclaus-Campbell Construction Company in Indianapolis. Before that, he had worked for Force Construction in Columbus for two years.
He was a member of Unity Baptist Church in Hamblen Township.
Mr. Arnold enjoyed kick boxing, weight lifting and Tai Kwan Do.
He is also survived by his eight-month-old son, Billy Wyatt Arnold; a brother, Chad W. Arnold, of Brown County; paternal grandparents, Billy and Molly Arnold of Spearsville; and paternal grandparents, Jack Windle and Patricia Windle of Hudson, Florida; and a host of other friends and relatives.
The Reverend Fred Harrison will lead a service Thursday, June 10, at 11 a.m. in Meredith-Clark Funeral Home at Morgantown.
Friends may call today, June 9, from 4 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Unity Baptist Church Cemetery in northern Brown County.
Memorial contributions may be made to a trust fund to benefit Billy Wyatt Arnold, in care of First State Bank, Post Office Box 255, Morgantown, Indiana 46160 or Meredith-Clark Funeral Home, Post Office Box 308, Morgantown, Indiana 46160.

Esther I. Hatton
Morgantown native Esther I. Hatton died Sunday morning, May 30, 1999, at St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers in Beech Grove. A resident of Monrovia, she was 80.
Mrs. Hatton was born August 12, 1918, in Morgantown to Harry and Hannah Emily Winegardner Foglesong.
She and Cecil Wilbur Hatton were married April 20, 1937. He died July 31, 1995.
Mrs. Hatton was graduated from the old Morgantown High School in 1936.
She was a homemaker and a member of Emanuel Apostolic Church in Martinsville.
She enjoyed reading.
Survivors include two sons, George W. "Bill" Hatton of Coral Springs, Florida and Ron Hatton of Martinsville; three daughters, Barbara Scholl of Martinsville, Wilma Weaver of Monrovia and Carol Bondell of Camby; a sister, Marian Mitchell of Martinsville; 13 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hatton was preceded in death by a brother, Newman Foglesong; and a sister, Ellen Clark.
A service was conducted Wednesday morning, June 2, at Neal and Summers Mortuary in Martinsville.
Burial was in Morgan County’s Nebo Memorial Park Cemetery.

Dale Johnson
Brown County native Dale "Toby" Johnson died Friday, June 4, 1999, at Bloomington Hospital. A resident of Springville, he was 60.
Mr. Johnson was born February 2, 1939, in Brown County to Vearl and Flossie Robertson Johnson.
He was married to Judith A. Holland. She survives in Lawrence County.
Mr. Johnson had worked as a die setter at General Motors Powertrain in Bedford.
He was a United States Army veteran.
Mr. Johnson was a member of the United Auto Workers Union, Bedford Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis and Country Christian Church.
Other survivors include two sons, Lonnie Dale Johnson and Monte Johnson, both of Bedford; a daughter, Shellie Doub of Omaha, Nebraska; a brother, Harold Johnson of Bedford; a sister, Donna Sue Johnson of Seymour; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Sharon Rose Johnson; and two brothers, Wayne Johnson and Gerald Johnson.
Barry Don "Buck" Smith conducted a service Monday afternoon, June 7, at Day and Carter Mortuary in Bedford.
Burial was in Lawrence County’s Judah Cemetery.

Jewel W. Rogers
Jewel Wayne Rogers, the father of Nashville residents Clover Phillips and Diane Scott, died Sunday, May 23, 1999, in Indianapolis. A resident of Franklin, he was 64.
Mr. Rogers was born May 17, 1935, in Little Rock, Arkansas to Joseph Earl and Dorothy Lee Garwood Rogers.
He had served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
Mr. Rogers enjoyed gardening.

Pastor Darrell Miller led a service Tuesday, May 25, at the Nineveh Christian Church.

Mary C. Western
Mary Catherine Western, the sister of Brown County residents Paul E. Western and Judith A. Schnur, died Monday evening, May 31, 1999, at the Thunderbird Samaritan Hospital in Glendale, Arizona. A resident of Phoenix, Arizona, she was 46.
Ms Western was born May 29, 1953, in Columbus to Paul Western Sr. and Margie E. Hulse Western. Her mother survives in Phoenix, Arizona.
She had worked as a payroll clerk at Schuff Steel Company in Phoenix, Arizona.
Other survivors include a son, Daren Western of Phoenix, Arizona; and a daughter, Jennifer Hickox of Phoenix, Arizona.
Ms. Western was preceded in death by her father.
The Reverend Fred C. Darling conducted a service Saturday morning, June 5, at Myers Funeral Service, Reed and Jewell Chapel in Columbus.
Cremation followed the service with burial in that city’s Garland Brook Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Bartholomew County, or the American Cancer Society.

Hattie Bailey
Former Brown County resident Hattie B. Cramer Bailey died Thursday, June 10, 1999, at Manor Care Nursing Home in Indianapolis. A resident of that city, she was 94.
Mrs. Bailey was born March 14, 1905, in Morgan County to Eli N. and Nellie M. Matthew Cramer.
She was married to Walter C. Bailey. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Bailey had worked in market research and home economics at Stokley Van Camp in Indianapolis for 15 years, retiring in 1967.
She had been a member of the Southport Christian Church. Mrs. Bailey was a member of the Southport Order of the Eastern Star for half a century.
Survivors include a sister, Louise Cavett Hegarty; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mrs. Bailey was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence Cramer, Earl Cramer and William Cramer; and three sisters, Marie Cassidy, Pauline Gaskill and Florence Roembke.
A service was conducted Monday afternoon, June 14, at G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home in Indianapolis.
Burial was in Johnson County's Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to Southport Christian Church, 201 East Epler Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana, or to the donor's choice of charities.

Helen C. Burgett
Former area resident Helen C. Luedeke Burgett died Saturday, June 12, 1999, at the Franklin United Methodist Community. She was 92.
Mrs. Burgett was born March 28, 1907, in Bellevue, Kentucky to Edward William and Mary Magdalena Grieser Luedeke.
She and Raymond L. Burgett were married June 21, 1947, in Bellevue, Kentucky. He died March 6, 1992.
Mrs. Burgett had received a degree in secretarial and business from the Miller School of Business in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1925.
She had worked as a secretary for Valvoline Oil Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mrs. Burgett was also a homemaker.
She had been a member of The United Church of Christ in Fort Thomas, Kentucky and the ladies sewing circle at the church.
Additionally, Mrs. Burgett had belonged to the Campbell County, Kentucky Homemakers.
She was a seamstress and enjoyed making all her own clothes.
Survivors include brothers- and sisters-in-law, Kenny Burgett and Mae Burgett, both of Bargersville and William and Clara Jane Douglass of Martinsville; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The Reverend Steve Fair conducted a service Tuesday morning, June 15, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
Burial was at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Erlanger, Kentucky.
