Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

John David Hatton

Nov. 7, 1962 – May 17, 2008

John David Hatton, 45, of Knightstown, died May 17 at his home.

He was born Nov. 7, 1962, in Columbia City, a son of the late Delbert Lamar Hatton and Dorothy C. (Earl) Hatton of Knightstown.

Mr. Hatton was a 1981 Union City Community High School graduate, where he performed saxophone with the band, played football, participated in the DECA program and was nominated prom king. A factory worker, he was known as an avid and talented guitar player. Mr. Hatton enjoyed fishing and spending time outdoors. He enjoyed collecting Indian relics, such as arrowheads, and fossils. He had a passion for history and his Bible was marked with passages he held dear. Known for his love for his family, Mr. Hatton was also a musician, inventor, writer and humorist.

Survivors include three sons, Jeremiah Pitman of Chicago, Quinton Hatton and Michael Hatton; a daughter, Susanah Hatton of Portland; his mother, Dorothy Hatton of Knightstown; a sister, Sarah (husband, Steve) Brishaber of Shirley; a brother, Tom (wife, Lisa) Hatton of Union City; five nephews, James, John and Luke Brishaber, and Thomas and Elijah Hatton; two nieces, Alania (husband, Tony) Dittmar of Union City and Tisha (husband, Tony) Banter of Berne; two aunts, Doris (husband, Allen) Rice of North Manchester and Mary Maurer of St. Mary’s, Ohio; an uncle, Paul (wife, Betty) Baker of Sidney, Ohio; and several cousins.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Suzanne and Sandy Hatton; a brother, Jim Hatton; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Earl and Mr. and Mrs. Delbert J. Hatton.

Funeral services May 24 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Union City with Rev. James Hill officiating. Burial followed at Union City Cemetery. Visitation was May 23 at Reichard Funeral Home in Union City. Memorial contributions may be made to Union City Community High School.

Donovan Ward Jackson

Jan. 11, 1913 – May 22, 2008

Donovan Ward “Don” Jackson, 95, of Lewisville, died May 22 at Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle.

He was born Jan. 11, 1913, in Lewisville, a son of the late John and Vera (Ward) Jackson.

Mr. Jackson was a lifelong Lewisville resident who lived along U.S. 40. He was a 1931 Lewisville High School graduate. Mr. Jackson married the former Ruth L. Watson on Sept. 28, 1935, and the marriage lasted 71 years. He worked at Chrysler Corporation in New Castle for 41 years, retiring in 1975. Mr. Jackson was also a 20-year Lewisville schools bus driver. He was a member of Lewisville Presbyterian Church, where he played Santa Claus for children for 50 years. He was also a Lewisville Masonic Lodge member.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy (husband, Herbert) Shears of Indianapolis; a son, Richard (wife, Jane) Jackson of Richmond; five grandchildren, Don (wife, Lisa) Shears, Herb, Jr., (wife, Kristen) Shears and Lisa Shears, Jim (wife, Julie) Jackson and Julie (husband, Mike) Meitzler; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Katherine Furgason of Indianapolis and Marilyn Smith of Kentucky; and several niece and nephews.

Funeral services were May 26 at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home in Lewisville with Revs. Peter Zinns and Peter Zinn and Pastor Mick Saunders officiating. Burial followed at Lewisville Cemetery. Visitation with full Masonic services was May 25 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Lewisville Presbyterian Church, Lewisville Masonic Lodge or the Lewisville Cemetery Association.

Ralph Large

July 14, 1944 – May 25, 2008

Ralph Large, 63, of Knightstown, died May 25 at Heritage House Rehabilitation Center in New Castle.

He was born July 14, 1944, in New Castle, a son of the late Lee and Mary Large.

Mr. Large attended Spiceland High School and was employed at Tom Green Tires in Rushville for many years. He was known as an avid baseball fan who enjoyed spending time in Kentucky. Mr. Large also enjoyed singing.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Large of Knightstown; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Anna Jean (husband, Lee) Perry of Anderson and Judy (husband, Jerry) Moore of Cambridge City; two brothers, Bill (wife, Ingrid) Large of Elizabethtown, Ky., and Larry Large of Elwood; several nieces and nephews; and two special friends, Tina and Joe O’Neal of Mooreland.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ilene Manlove.

Funeral services are at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 29, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown with Rev. Robert Schaeffer officiating. Following cremation, burial will take place at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation is Thursday, May 29, from 4 p.m. until time of services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ralph Large Memorial Fund with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Lois P. Thompson

June 13, 1904 – May 12, 2008

Lois P. Thompson, 103, died May 12 at Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle.

She was born June 13, 1904, in Arlington, a daughter of the late Herbert and Elizabeth (Moore) Kennedy.

Mrs. Thompson lived in Rush and Henry Counties all her life. She worked at Chrysler Corporation in New Castle during World War II and at Kresage’s Five & Dime in New Castle. She was known for her love of cooking and she owned and operated 3-T Restaurant in Straughn and the Wagon Wheel in New Castle. She and her husband, Ren, also operated Thompson Go-Kart Track south of New Castle for many years. Mrs. Thompson was a 50-year member of Eastern Star. She enjoyed spending time with her family, mushroom hunting and playing cards.

Survivors include three daughters, Lenora (husband, Ira) Rhodes of New Castle, Norma Jean Hayworth of Lewisville and Carolyn Jefferis of New Castle; a son, Charles Thompson of New Castle; 11 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Alberta Pointer of Kokomo; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lorenzo Dow “Ren” Thompson, Sr.; a son, Lorenzo Thompson, Jr.; and 11 siblings. Funeral services were May 16 at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home in Lewisville with Pastor Mark Thompson officiating. Burial followed at Arlington East Hill Cemetery. Visitation was May 15 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Henry County Sheriff’s Ambulance.

Madge Jones

Oct. 10, 1918 – May 15, 2008

Madge (Burchett) Jones, 89, of Knightstown, died May 15 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

She was born Oct. 10, 1918, in Upper Tygart, Ky., a daughter of the late Chester and Myrtle (Jones) Burchett.

Mrs. Jones was a homemaker who lived in Knightstown most of her life. She married Russell Jones on Dec. 31, 1949. She enjoyed gardening, bee keeping and photography.

Survivors include a son, Chester (wife, Pat) Jones of Loveland, Ohio; three daughters, Violet Hutson of Greenfield, Joan Hutson of Taylor, Ariz., and Alice (husband, Art) Siedelman of Aurora, Colo.; 20 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell; two sons; and three brothers.

Funeral services were May 18 at Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown with Randy Satterfield and Dan Wisecup officiating. Burial followed on May 19 at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was May 18 at the funeral home.

Lillian L. Dupke

June 2, 1925 – May 16, 2008

Lillian L. (Hicks) Dupke, 82, of Shirley, died May 16 at St. John’s Medical Center in Anderson.

She was born June 2, 1925, in Monticello, Ky., a daughter of the late Edward Marshall and Maggie (Blackburn) Hicks.

A homemaker, Mrs. Dupke lived in Shirley for the past 54 years. She married H. Blaine Dupke in 1945. Mrs. Dupke enjoyed spending time with her family, especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Shirley Friends Church and its senior Sunday school class. A 50-year member of Order of the Eastern Star, Shirley Chapter #492, she was also a member of Shirley Senior Citizens and Golden Merry Makers. She enjoyed attending gospel music concerts.

Survivors include her daughter, Marla (husband, Tom) Kemerly of Shirley; a son, Gary (wife, Merry) Dupke of Valrico, Fla.; two daughters-in-law, Cheryl Dupke of Shirley and Sharon Dupke of Port St. John, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Todd (wife, Jill) Dupke, Brad Dupke, Marlisa (husband, Doug) Wennen, Jason (wife, Jessica) Kemerly, Monica (husband, Tim) Frost and Joshua, Julie, Ciara and Raegan Dupke; eight great-grandchildren, Kirsten, Cole, Kendall and Corbin Kemerly, Bryce and Myles Wenned, Blade Dupke and Jaycie Summers’ and three nieces, Elaine Judd, Sheila Murphy and Tina Sizemore.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Blaine; two sons, Reg and Jerry Dupke; two brothers, Walter and Ola Hicks; two sisters, Jean Hicks and Avis Streeter; a granddaughter, Maggie Dupke; and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral services were May 20 at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home in Shirley. Burial followed at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson. Visitation was May 19 at the funeral home. Eastern Star services followed visitation and also took place prior to funeral services on May 20.

Anna May Cronk

Aug. 30, 1923 – May 16, 2008

Anna May (Houk) Cronk of rural Kennard died May 16.

She was born in Greensboro Township on Aug. 30, 1923, a daughter of the late Obadiah and Nell (Kuhn) Houk.

Mrs. Cronk graduated from Cadiz High School and Anderson Business College. She was known as a devoted wife and mother. Mrs. Cronk owned Liquid Fertilizer, Inc., which was known as a great contributor to the Henry County farming community. She was active in 4-H, home extension clubs and March of Dimes. Mrs. Cronk was a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha. Her hobbies included golf, sewing, crossword puzzles and watching sports.

Survivors include two daughters, Tina (husband, Larry) Fowler and Debra (husband, Billy) Ratliff; a son, Mark (wife, Nancy) Cronk; eight grandchildren, Kim (husband, David) Walls, Paul Fowler, Amy Thompson, Russ (wife, Rhonda) Cronk, Ryan (wife, Staci) Cronk, Kylene (husband, Chuck) Cheeseman, Natalie Cronk and Dustin Cronk; three stepgrandchildren, Brian (wife, Wendi) Ratliff, Bradley (wife, Angela) Ratliff and Brett Ratliff; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lillian Bailey; a sister-in-law, Mary Losh; and a brother-in-law, Jack (wife, Barbara) Cronk.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell “Bucky” Cronk; and a sister, Ruth Erli.

Funeral services were May 21 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastor Junior Maloyed officiating. Burial followed in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was May 20 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army of New Castle, the American Diabetes Association or the March of Dimes.
