Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Nicholas Ray Bass

January 12, 2008

Nicholas Ray Bass, infant son of Duane Ray Bass and Leondra Badgley of Knightstown, died January 12 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

Survivors include his parents; a sister, Kinzi Badgley of Knightstown; maternal grandparents, Shane and Jan Saylor of Knightstown and Bill and Debbie Harrison of Knightstown; paternal grandparents, Evert and Janie Bass of Simms, Texas; two great-grandmothers, Ethel Snedigar of Knightstown and Luella Hill of Knightstown; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a grandfather, Tommy Griffith; and a grandmother, Virginia Bass.

Funeral services were January 15 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastor Randy Gross officiating. Burial followed at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.

Verna Evelyn Coomer

June 9, 1926 – Feb. 15, 2008

Verna Evelyn (Gulley) Coomer, 81, of Wilkinson, died February 15 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

She was born June 9, 1926, in Fitch, Ky., a daughter of the late Everett and Zula (Zornes) Gulley.

Mrs. Coomer worked for several years in the upholstery business with her daughter, Linda. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Anderson.

Survivors include two sons, Allen Coomer and David Coomer, both of Wilkinson; four daughters, Linda (husband, Gene) Cook and Carol (husband, David) Beaver, both of Wilkinson, Gail (husband, Dwight) Kiser of Maxwell and Debbie Kissick of Kennard; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a half-brother, Ray Locker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert; a daughter, Wanda Coomer; and a son, Mark Coomer.

Funeral services are at 5 p.m. Saturday, February 23, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Gary Meeker officiating. Visitation is 4 p.m. until time of funeral services on February 23 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ora Lee Mann

Jan. 22, 1920 – Feb. 18, 2008

Ora Lee Mann, 88, of Shirley, died February 18 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

She was born Jan. 22, 1920, in Grove, Okla., a daughter of the late Ora Mathew and Florence (Landon) Gray.

Ms. Mann owned and operated Mann’s Grocery in Shirley for many years. She served in the U.S. Army ASA WAC during World War II.

Survivors include a brother, Calvin (wife, Claudine) Gray of Shirley; a special niece, Edith McCurdy of Pendleton; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Robert Mann; two brothers, Chloe Gray and John Gray; and two sisters, Willa Mae Hart and Viola Keerns.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Friday, February 22, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastor Bud Probasco officiating. Burial will follow at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson. Visitation is noon until time of services on Friday, February 22 at the funeral home.

Vicki L. Saunders

April 13, 1943 – Feb. 18, 2008

Vicki L. (Eakin) Saunders, 64, of Greenfield, died February 18 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

She was born April 13, 1943, in Indianapolis, a daughter of the late Emmett and Marjorie (Murphy) Eakin.

Mrs. Saunders was a longtime Hancock County employee. She recently retired from her position as Hancock County Auditor. She was a member of the Hancock Extension Homemakers and she served as past-president of the organization. She felt that her most important job was serving as a baking supervisor and judge for her daughters and granddaughters through many years of 4-H.

Survivors include her husband, Larry D. Saunders of Greenfield; two daughters, Amberlee (husband, Chris) Hudson of Greenfield and Shana Wolfenberger of Greenfield; three granddaughters, Ashton and Savannah Hudson and Zoey Wolfenberger; two sisters, Sandy Bryant of Greenfield and Lois Horton of Cordova, Tenn.; her mother-in-law, Eleanor White Saunders of Greenfield; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 23, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastor Terry Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. Friday, February 22, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Bradley United Methodist Church in Greenfield.

Shirley M. Campbell

July 11, 1938 – Feb. 3, 2008

Shirley M. Campbell, 69, of Greenfield, died February 3 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

She was born July 11, 1938, in New Castle, a daughter of the late Henry and Abigale (Marsh) Smith.

Mrs. Campbell was a bartender most of her life.

Survivors include her husband, Bruce Campbell of Greenfield; two sons, Steve Findlay of Greenfield and Stan Findlay of Anderson; two daughters, Sheila Findlay-Striebeck of Monticello and Kelly Campbell-Hall of Knightstown; a brother, Henry Smith of Angola; four grandsons; three granddaughters; a great-grandson; and one great-granddaughter.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Bass; and a grandson, Zack Findlay.

Private graveside funeral services were February 5 at Park Cemetery in Greenfield. Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson handled arrangements.

Ezra Spence

Jan. 10, 1925 – Feb. 5, 2008

Ezra Spence, 83, of Carthage, died February 5 at Richard Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis.

He was born Jan. 10, 1925, in Lewis County, Ky., a son of the late Clarence and Anna (Gulley) Spence.

Mr. Spence was a member of Carthage Early Methodist Church, where he served on the board of directors. He was a veterans of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. Self-employed in the logging industry for many years, Mr. Spence enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Nola E. Spence of Carthage; two sons, Loran (wife, Judy) Spence of Monticello, Ky., and Larry (wife, Lisa) Spence of Carthage; a daughter, Sharon (husband, Russell) Kline of Carthage; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Olive Riley and Audrey Nolan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were February 8 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown with Rev. Peter Casalino officiating. Burial followed in Carthage Riverside Cemetery. Military graveside rites were conducted by Knightstown American Legion Post 152. Visitation was February 7 at the funeral home.

Elizabeth Claire Hardin

Sept. 11, 1923 – Feb. 6, 2008

Elizabeth Claire “Liz” (Parker) Hardin, 84, of Indianapolis, died February 6.

She was born Sept. 11, 1923, a daughter of the late Dwight and Hazel Parker.

Mrs. Hardin attended Shortridge High School in Indianapolis for two years, but graduated from Knightstown High School. She attended Earlham College and Butler University. While at Butler, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and met her future husband, James Russell Hardin. The couple was married six months after their blind date. The Hardins’ marriage lasted 64 years. An avid reader, Mrs. Hardin was an accomplished bridge player who also enjoyed crossword puzzles. She was a past regent of the Jonathon Jennings Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her other memberships included Clio Club, Art and Study, Latreian, St. Ursula’s Guild and Propyleum. She and Mr. Hardin attended Trinity Episcopal Church. Known for her hospitality, Mrs. Hardin enjoyed hosting friends and family at her home.

Survivors include her husband, Jim; two sons, Tim (wife, Barbara) Hardin and Tom (wife, Nancy) Hardin; a sister, Jennifer Claire Parker; a brother, Harrison (wife, Susan) Parker; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were February 11 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Indianapolis. Burial followed at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. Visitation was February 10 at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Home in Broad Ripple. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church in Indianapolis.
