Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Joseph H. Paul

July 21, 1960 – Apr. 16, 2005

Joseph H. Paul, 44, of Knightstown, died Saturday, April 16 at Hancock County Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was born July 21, 1960 in New Castle, a son of William T. and Joan (Thompson) Paul.

Mr. Paul was a 1978 graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School. He attended Ball State University and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of First Christian Church in New Castle where he served as a deacon. Mr. Paul enjoyed the outdoors, automobile restoration and spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Patty Paul of Knightstown; a son, Ethan Paul of Carthage; two stepsons, Matthew May of Knightstown, and Joseph May of Edinburg; a sister, Beth Widner (fiancé Mark Curtis) of New Castle; a brother, Byron T. Paul of Knightstown; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Paul was preceded in death by his grandparents, H. Ivan and Bernice H. Paul and Virgil M. and Sarah E. Thompson, and his father-in-law, Arnold Gorman.

Services were held Wednesday, April 20, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel, with Rev. Richard Thayer officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery. Graveside military services will be conducted by the Knightstown American Legion.

Visitation was Tuesday, April 19 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society and the Ethan Paul Education Trust. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Lena Cavaletto

Feb. 28, 1920 – Apr. 13, 2005

Lena Cavaletto, 85, died Wednesday, April 13, at Brandywine Nursing Home in Greenfield. She was born in Clinton, Ind. on February 28, 1920, and had lived in this area since 1972. She was a daughter of the late John and Maddlena Bugni.

Mrs. Cavaletto retired as a clerk at Ernie’s Market. She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Knightstown.

She is survived by five sons, Ernest Cavaletto of Greenfield, Frank (wife Mary) Cavaletto of Indianapolis, John Cavaletto of Greenfield, Virgil (wife Janice) Cavaletto of Carthage, and David Cavaletto of Greenfield; one sister, Mrs. Anna Biszantz of Indianapolis; 20 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Cavaletto married Ernest Cavaletto November 25, 1939, and he preceded her in death. Five brothers and two sisters also preceded her in death.

A funeral mass was held Saturday, April 16 at St. Rose Catholic Church, Knightstown, with Rev. Bill Ehalt officiating. Burial followed in Glen Cove Cemetery. Todd Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation and praying of the rosary were held Friday, April 15, at the funeral home.

Homer Van Duyn, Jr.

July 19, 1924 – Apr. 16, 2005

Homer Van Duyn, Jr., 80, a resident of Shirley, died Saturday, April 16, in Knightstown. He was born July 19, 1924, the son of the late Homer and Gladys (Judge) Van Duyn.

Mr. Van Duyn had worked at Brooks Foods Company in Shirley. He had also worked for the Hancock County Highway Department.

Survivors include a foster son, Randy Ebbert of Knightstown; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, foster grandchildren, and foster great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 19, in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson. Burial followed in McCray Cemetery.

Visitation was at the funeral home prior to the service.

Olive Minerva Jarvis

Apr. 15, 1910 – Apr. 21, 2005

Olive Minerva Jarvis, 95, died Thursday, April 21 at her home in Shirley. She had been a Shirley resident since 1938. She was born April 15, 1910 in Pineville, Mo., daughter of the late Joseph Washington and Estelle Minerva Hopkins Taffner.

Ms. Jarvis had worked at Delco-Remy in Anderson for 13 years. She was a former member of the Countryside Christian Church and a present member of Shirley Christian Church. She was a member of the Kennard Brotherhood/Sisterhood.

Survivors include two sisters, Velma Jones of Grove, Okla., and Lois Armstrong of Fairland, Okla.; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Carrie Torres of Charlottesville, and Darrell and June Deck of Shirley.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Jarvis was preceded in death by two husbands, Otto Stoughton, former Shirley town Marshall, who died April 26, 1953, and Bill Jarvis, who died October 13, 1972; one daughter, Velma Adeline Kalani, who died January 1, 1987; three brothers, Joe Taffner, Leslie Taffner and Everett Taffner; and two sisters, Irene and Marjorie.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 30, 3 p.m. at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Estell Chapel in Shirley. Rev. Darrell Deck and Rev. Jams Hill will officiate. Burial will follow in McCray Cemetery, Wilkinson.

Visitation will be from 1 – 3 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Robert Lee Roland

Sept. 23, 1921 – Apr. 21, 2005

Robert Lee Roland, 83, died Thursday, April 21 at Hancock Memorial Hospital, Greenfield. Mr. Roland was a lifelong resident of Knightstown. He was born September 23, 1921, son of the late Russell Roland and Goldie (Zaph) Roland.

Mr. Roland was a graduate of Mt. Comfort High School. He was an Army WWII veteran, having served with the 10th Mountain Division in Italy. He was awarded several ribbons and medals, including the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star. Mr. Roland retired in 1980 as an assembly worker for Chrysler in Indianapolis. He also was a farmer. He was a member of the Knightstown Christian Church and the Knightstown American Legion. Mr. Roland loved to play golf and help people.

Survivors include a son, Gary (wife Judith Ann) Roland of Mesa, Ariz.; a daughter, Judi Sloan of Knightstown; three brothers, Earl Roland, Charles Roland, and George Roland, all of Greenfield; one sister, Marjorie Hale of Westfield, Ind.; two grandsons, Robert Brandon Roland of Mesa, Ariz., and Clinton Russell (wife Brandi) Roland of Mesa, Ariz.; four granddaughters, Amy (husband Rodney) Wisehart, Angela (husband Bobby) Kilgore, both of Knightstown, Amanda (companion Mike Stone) Sloan of Greenfield, and Emily (husband Andy) Rollins, of Falmouth, Ind.; 14 great-grandchildren; and three step grandchildren.

Mr. Roland married Virginia Roberts August 3, 1945 and she preceded him in death in 2004. In addition to his parents, two brothers and a sister also preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 26 at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel, Knightstown, with Rev. Richard Thayer officiating. Burial followed in Glen Cove Cemetery, with American Legion and VFW graveside services.

Visitation was held Monday, April 25 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Knightstown American Legion.

Leone P. Mosier

July 14, 1917 – Apr. 21, 2005

Leone P. Mosier, 87, of Morristown, died Thursday, April 21 at Major Hospital, Shelbyville. She was born July 14, 1917 in Jonesboro, Ark., daughter of the late John and Nettie (Holmes) Power.

Mrs. Mosier had lived most of her life in Carthage. She retired as a clerk with the U.S. Post Office. She was a member of the Fletcher United Methodist Church and a former member of Eastern Star.

Survivors include a son, James W. (wife Kathryn) Mosier of Nineveh, Ind.; a daughter, Sheryl (husband Richard) Redfern of Villa Hills, Ky.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Mosier married Ralph H. Mosier April 24, 1937 and he preceded her in death in 1978. Her parents and one sister also preceded her in death.

Services were held Saturday, April 23 at Fletcher United Methodist Church, Carthage, with Rev. Roger Campbell officiating. Burial followed in Walnut Ridge Cemetery, Carthage. Todd Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation was held prior to the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fletcher United Methodist Church or to the American Diabetes Association.

Vera May Castle

May 29, 1915 – Apr. 20, 2005

Vera May Castle, 89, of Greenfield, died Wednesday, April 20 at Regency Place Nursing Home, Greenfield. She was born in Scottsburg, Ind., May 29, 1915, daughter of the late Tilden and Dona (Corn) King.

Mrs. Castle was a homemaker and had lived in Greenfield for many years.

She is survived by a son, Gary (wife Chris) Castle of McCordsville; three daughters, Judy (husband Lloyd) LaMere of Indianapolis, Joyce (husband Paul) Scholl of Knightstown, and Jerri (husband Winston) Wilson of Greenfield; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She married Eugene Castle February 5, 1938 and he preceded her in death in 1993. In addition to her parents, six brothers and five sisters preceded her in death.

Services were held Saturday, April 23 at Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel, Knightstown, with Don Quass officiating. Burial followed in Washington Park East Cemetery, Indianapolis.

Visitation was held at the funeral home prior to the service.
