Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Farris V. Rose

July 5, 1923 – Nov. 23, 2005

Farris V. Rose of San Jose, Tx., died Wednesday, Nov. 23.

He was born July 5, 1923, in Canton, Ohio, a son of the late Dewey and Edna Rose. Mr. Rose grew up in Kentucky and spent his teenage years in Knightstown, where he worked his way through high school as an usher in a movie theater.

Mr. Rose served in United States Navy during World War II. After the war, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Manchester (Ind.) College, where he met and married Betty Pearl-Trent. The couple then traveled to Dallas, Tx., where Mr. Rose earned a law degree from Southern Methodist University. After graduation, they moved to El Paso, Tx., where Mr. Rose worked for the El Paso Gas Co. He later served as an attorney for Hudspeth County, Tx. After that, he served as county attorney for Culberson County, Tx., for 25 years. He operated a private practice in El Paso from 1985-1997 and continued his private practice elsewhere in Texas.

Survivors include his wife; son Bill (wife, Dianna) Rose and their children, Megan and Brian, of El Paso, Tx., Philip Rose of Van Horn, Tx., Richard Rose and his children, Austin, Justin, Mitchell and Michael; brothers Lawrence (wife, Elsie) Rose of Pensacola, Fla., Philip (wife, Juanda) Rose of Greenfield, and Art Rose of LaPorte; sisters, Elizabeth (husband, Ken) Martin of New Castle, Diana (husband, Roger) Griffin of Greenfield; many nieces, nephews and good friends.

Funeral services were Thursday, Dec. 1, at Trinity Presbyterian Church in El Paso, Tx., with Rev. Patti Lane officiating.

Joseph A. Carey, Sr.

Feb. 21, 1908 – Dec. 3, 2005

Joseph A. Carey, Sr., 97, of Harlingen, Tx., died Saturday, Dec. 3, at Golden Palms Health Center in Harlingen.

He was born Feb. 21, 1908, in Knightstown, a son of the late Vernon and Harriette (Pritchard) Carey.

Mr. Carey was a 1925 graduate of Knightstown High School. He attended Purdue University and graduated in 1929 with a degree in agriculture and animal husbandry. He worked as a statistical clerk at Western Electric in Chicago. He also worked in the United States Department of Agriculture’s blueberry eradication program, as well as Civil Service CCC.

Mr. Carey served in the U.S. Air Force from September, 1940, to March, 1950, participating in several theaters including Egypt, Libya, Naples, Foggia, Rome and Arno. He received several citations including the American Defense Service Medal, EAME Camp Medal, American Camp Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

He had several sales positions with Whalen’s Furniture, Sears and True Value Hardware. Mr. Carey was a member of First Christian Church in Harlingen. He was a lifetime member of the Military Officers Association of America, as well as the Harlingen Masonic Lodge, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons in Texas and Corpus Christi Commandery #57 – Knights Temple of Texas.

Survivors include his children, Joseph A. Carey, Jr., of Halifax, Va., and Barbara C. Brawley of Pioneer, Cal.; grandchildren, Stephanie Robertson and Pat Carey, both of Richmond, Va., Chris Carey of Pittsburg, Penn., Mike Carey of Houston, Tx., Laura Abel of Placerville, Cal., Pam Wiswell of Concord, Cal., and Sharon Sims of Granite Bay, Cal.; 20 great-grandchildren; cousins, Frances Pritchard of La Jolla, Cal., and Sam Pritchard of Waynesboro, N.C., and nieces, Sue Lawrence of Knightstown, and Sara Lowe of Bullhead City, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lucille (Gann) Carey; his wife, Wilma Taylor; and his sister, Ann (Carey) Bartle.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen with Rev. Mark Coppins officiating. Burial followed in Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, Tx., with full military honors. Visitation was from 12-9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5, at the funeral home. Family members received friends from 5-7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church in Harlingen or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Orville D. Saylors

May 3, 1929 – Dec. 1, 2005

Orville D. Saylors, 76, of Shirley, died Thursday, Dec. 1, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Hospital in Carmel.

He was born May 3, 1929, the son of the late Leslie and Lenore (Qualls) Saylors.

Mr. Saylors retired in 1987 from RCA, where for 32 years he served as a warehouse foreman. He was an avid wood worker and gardener.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Violet (Staley) Saylors of Shirley; three daughters, Dianna (husband, Gary) Thalmann of Indianapolis, Jeanne (husband, Kenneth) Delbridge of Knightstown, Linda (husband, James) Rannefeld of Taos, N.M.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a half brother, Lee Saylors of Virginia; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Becky Saylors, in 1993.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5, at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Kenneth Delbridge officiating. Entombment followed at Green Hills Memory Gardens in New Castle. Visitation was 204 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, at the funeral home.

Larry E. Collins

May 21, 1939 – Nov. 27, 2005

Larry E. Collins, 66, of New Castle, died on Sunday, Nov. 27.

He was born May 21, 1939, in Union City, a son of the late Percy and Esther Smith Collins.

Mr. Collins was a 1957 graduate of Union City High School where he excelled in basketball and baseball. He was later drafted by the Cincinnati Reds. He was also an avid bowler, dancer and softball player. Mr. Collins had lived in Union City, Winchester, California, the Virgin Islands and, most recently, New Castle. He was a professional graphic designer for Ball State University, Cal State Northridge University and The Daily News in the Virgin Islands. He owned and operated Professional Graphics, Inc., in Chatsworth, Cal. He was also employed by Charles Prent-O-Graph in Glendale, Cal., Carquest in New Castle, Broyles Plumbing in New Castle, and DMG World Media in Knightstown.

Mr. Collins was also an avid church-goer. He was a member of The Church at Rocky Peak in Chatsworth, Cal., Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, Cal., and First Baptist Church Family Life Center in New Castle, where he served as a Sunday School teacher. He was a leader of the Grief Share Support Group and was a performer in many church plays. A member of the church choir, Mr. Collins was also in charge of group activities for the “G5 Alive” ministry. He was known for his strong passion for sharing the gospel with those who were lost spiritually. He also loved animals, particularly Molly and Jack, and his late Labrador, Willy.

He married his wife, Jan, on July 4, 1976.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Lisa Kay (husband, Kelly) Holloway of Muncie; three sons, Barry J. (wife, Stacie) Collins of Matthews, Bruce J. (wife, Laura) Buchan of Simi Valley, Cal., and Russell A. McKelvey of Newport Island, Cal.; nine grandchildren, Zachary Goldenberg of Muncie, Chloe and Garrett Goldenberg, both of Pismo Beach, Cal., Grant, Christian and Aaron Collins, all of Matthews, Justin, Logan and Olivia Buchan, all of Simi Valley, Cal.; a brother, Richard (wife, Janet) Collins of Union City; an aunt, Treva Lykins of Bonita Springs, Fla.; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friends, Larry “Woody” Wasson of Reno, Nev., and Candy and Catelyn Sneed of New Castle.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Brian Collins.

Ida Louise Staub

Sept. 29, 1920 – Nov. 11, 2004

Knightstown native, Ida Louise Staub, 84, died Thursday, November 11, 2004 in Corona, Calif. She was born in Knightstown September 29, 1920, the second daughter of Knightstown Marshall and Henry Co. Sheriff Ernest Win Bradway and Clara Bell Montgomery Bradway, both of Indiana.

She grew up in Henry County, graduating form Knightstown High School in 1938. After managing the meat department of an Indianapolis grocery during WW II, she moved to southern California where she married the late Harrison Lee Staub. Married for over 56 years, their life together took them to distant and exotic locations such as Venezuela where they lived for nine years in the untamed, eastern oil fields near the Guiana border. She bravely faced snakes and piranhas, tropical diseases and parasites and raised her children without complaining until the bombs and machine guns of rebellion threatened the safety of her family. Upon the family’s return to the U.S. in 1960, they settled in Long Beach and moved to Riverside in the fall of 1993 to be closer to their grandchildren. Ida was a special lady whose sense of humor, generosity and friendship touched everyone she knew.

Survivors include three children, Jerry Lee Staub and Brenda Denisse Humphrey of Riverside and Ronald Michael Staub of Fontana, Calif. Surviving grandchildren include Jennie Aspen and Brion Humphrey of Colorado, Cathy and Chelsea Staub of Riverside and Katie and Rachel Staub of Fontana; one brothers, George Bradway of Richmond; cousins, Robert Montgomery and Walter Pearson; nieces and nephews Barry Hoover, Susan Lightfoot, Charlotte Horner and Deborah Armstrong.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harrison L. Staub, sister Doris Hoover and cousins, Kenneth Montgomery and Zoetta Pearson.

A memorial service was held at the Little Church of the Flowers, Forest Lawn in Glendale, Calif. on November 22.

The family does not wish flowers but would love stories of their experiences with Ida or her family. These can be sent to Brenda Humphrey, 11661 Hartford Ct., Riverside, CA 92503.

Marcelle O. Jones

June 3, 1922 – Jan. 16, 2005

Marcelle O. Jones, 82, of Spiceland died Sunday, January 16 at Henry Co. Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. She was born June 3, 1922 in Rush County, a daughter of the late Clyde and Rema (Mahan) Owens.

Mrs. Jones was a 1940 graduate of Mays High School and a member of the Mays Alumni. She retired from New Castle State Hospital in 1982 after 26 years of service in the Medical Records Dept. She was an active member of the Spiceland United Methodist Church. A member of the Spicy Bees Home Ec. Club, she enjoyed working with flowers, cooking, reading and music.

Survivors include one son, David E. Jones of New Castle; two daughters, Linda K. (husband Leon) Fetters of Winchester and Brenda J. (husband Ron) Reece, near Mays; one granddaughter, Anita (husband Tom) Tierney of Bluffton; three grandsons, Eric Jones of Spiceland, David Reece of Lafayette and Ryan Mullen of Winchester; three step-great-grandchildren, Kirsten, Kelsey and Konner Tierney; a sister-in-law, Frances Jean Jones of New Castle; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, her husband, Hershel I. Jones, preceded her in death on August 13, 1983.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 20 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. tonight (Wednesday, Jan. 19) at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be given to Spiceland United Methodist Church or the Arthritis Foundation with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Ralph Milton Young

Aug. 10, 1911 – Jan. 19, 2005

Former Markleville resident Ralph Milton Young, 95, died Wednesday, January 19 at the Rawlins House in Pendleton. He was born August 10, 1911 in Hancock County, a son of the late Robert C. and Stella F. (Walker) Young.

Mr. Young was a retired farmer, loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved sports, history and was a Civil War buff.

Surviving are is wife of 67 years, Madalene (Solomon) Young of Markleville whom he married September 18, 1937; one son, Michael F. (wife Delores) Young of New Castle; one daughter, Kathleen S. (husband Michael) Doran of Fort Wayne; four grandchildren, Shawn Young, Shannon D. Neal, Shane M. Young and Patrick M.S. Doran; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn Karpinski and Martha June Zirkle; one brother, Robert G. Young; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Gerald Young; two sisters, Doris Johns and Ruth Scott.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 22 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with burial in McCray Cemetery, Wilkinson.

Visitation was held at the funeral home Friday, January 21 and one hour prior to services on Saturday.
