Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Peg Welch

Nov. 1923 – Feb. 15, 2004

Peg Welch, 80, of Columbus died Sunday, February 15 at Four Seasons Health Care Center. She was born November 14, 1923 in Knightstown, a daughter of the late Elbert and Addie Vickery Leavelle.

Mrs. Welch was retired from Reliance Electric where she worked as a secretary for 22 years. She was a member of Burnsville Christian Church, a former member of the North Vernon Christian Church, a 62-year member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 54 of Knightstown and Chapter 512 of Westport and Chapter 183 of North Vernon. She was a 1941 graduate of Knightstown High School. Peg married Vergil M. Welch December 19, 1941 in Liberty and he died August 27, 1994.

Survivors include one daughter, Deborah E. Seifker of Columbus; five grandchildren, Wendy Diann Scgalski of Columbus, Patricia Sutton, Shawn Cummings and Shannon Jenkins, all of Seymour, and Rusty Seifker of Madison; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth Barnes of Washington state.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Richard Welch; granddaughter, Jennifer Strietelmeier; sister, Sara Frances Godby; and a brother, Elbert O. Leavelle, Jr.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 19 at Myers Funeral Service, 3729 25th St., Columbus, with Rev. Marcus Speer officiating. Entombment will be in Garland Brook Mausoleum.

Visitation will be from 4-7:30 p.m. today (Wednesday, February 18) at the funeral home with an Eastern Star service at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to The Scholarship Fund of Burnsville Christian Church.

Robert A. Farmer

Aug. 17, 1922 – Feb. 15, 2004

Robert A. Farmer, 81, a resident of New Castle and a former resident of rural Shirley, died Sunday, February 15 at Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle. He was born August 17, 1922 in Henry County, a son of the late Joe W. and Tweeda Ellen (Grace) Farmer.

Mr. Farmer, a 1947 graduate of Purdue University, was a farmer near Shirley for over 50 years. He was a WW II Air Force Pilot flying B-17s and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1973 with the rank of Major. He taught veterans classes after WW II and the Vietnam War. He was a 50-year member of the Mechanicsburg Masonic Lodge #392 F&AM, member of the Scottish Rite #453 and past President of Henry County Shrine. He was past president of the Kennard Lions Club, a member of Henry County Rural Carriers Assoc. and was a Shirley rural route carrier from 1959 to 1974. He had worked for 15 years for the Henry County Surveyor’s office and was a longtime deacon for the Kennard Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille (Miller) Farmer of New Castle; three sons, Bob (wife Candi) Farmer of Shirley, Jeff Farmer of Lafayette, and Jim Farmer of Anderson; one daughter, Connie Steepleton; three grandchildren, Pat Farmer of Shirley, Jenni Farmer of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Drew Farmer of Franklin; one brother, Don Farmer of rural Mechanicsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Edith McIntire, Nell Riggs, Jeanette Brown and Mildred Highmiler, and one brother, Maurice Farmer.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Condo & son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Paul Enyart officiating. Burial will follow at Mechanicsburg Cemetery with military graveside rites.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. today (Wednesday, February 18).

Vicki D. Lewman

Sept. 16, 1956 – Feb. 15, 2004

Vicki D. Lewman, 47, a resident of Anderson, died Sunday, February 15 at her residence. She was born September 16, 1956 in Greenfield, a daughter of Hollis and Lucille (Zornes) Lewman of Markleville.

She was a 1976 graduate of Pendleton Heights High School and had worked at Western Electric. Vicki was a member of the Shirley Christian Church where she was baptized in 1974 and a member of the Willing Worker of the church and the Elvis Club.

Surviving besides her parents is a son, Darreck Pierce of Alexandria; a sister, Robin (husband Mark) Kridler of Anderson; maternal grandfather, Elmer Zornes of Greenfield; a niece, Melissa Toombs of New Castle and a nephew, Levi Mosby of Anderson.

A son, Daniel Pierce, maternal grandmother, Anna Zornes, and paternal grandparents, Samuel and Virgie (Planck) Lewman preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 20 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with James Hill officiating. Burial will follow in McCray Cemetery, Wilkinson.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, February 19.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shirley Christian Church, P.O. Box 10, Shirley, IN 47384.

Lowell J. Carlton

Apr. 30, 1931 – Feb. 19, 2004

Lowell J. “Jay” Carlton, 72, a resident of Wilkinson, died Thursday, February 19 at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. He was born April 30, 1931 in Wilkinson, a son of the late Elbert and Edna (Milner) Carlton.

Mr. Carlton retired from Allisons of Indianapolis in 1992, worked for the Greenfield Daily Reporter and for the McCray Cemetery Association of Wilkinson. He was a member of the Shirley/Wilkinson UMC, Shirley Masonic Lodge #531 and the Riley Dance Club. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was an avid photo restorer, photographer and loved spending time with his five grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Marilyn (Bright) Carlton of Wilkinson; two sons, Tom and Todd Carlton, both of Wilkinson; one brother, Robert Carlton of Wilkinson; one sister, Betty Johnson of Greenfield; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

His brother, Elbert “Nick” Carlton Jr. and his parents preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 21 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Rev. Kurt Stone officiating. Visitation was held prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial was to be in McCray Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shirley/Wilkinson United Methodist Church.

Clara May Tanner

Oct. 18, 1923 – Feb. 17, 2004

Clara May Tanner, 80, of Mays died Tuesday, February 17 at Flat Rock River Lodge. She was born October 18, 1923 in Wayne County, Ky., a daughter of the late Grover and Ada (Ard) McQueary.

Mrs. Tanner was a homemaker and lived most of her life in Mays.

Survivors include three brothers, Marvin McQueary of New Castle, Lonnie (wife Sharon) McQueary of Noblesville, and Tom (wife Margaret) Coffey of Tulahoma, Tenn; and one sister, Martha Dunaway of Houstonville, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Torrence O. Tanner March 17, 1987; six brothers and three sisters.

Services were held Friday, February 20 at Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel, Knightstown with Rev. George Maloyed officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery.

Visitation was held at the funeral home Friday prior to the service.

Miriam Lucille Holder

Aug. 27, 1919 – Feb. 17, 2004

Miriam Lucille Holder, 83, of Greensboro died Tuesday, February 17 at Muncie Health & Rehabilitation Center. She was born August 27, 1919 in Greensboro, a daughter of the late Frank and Bertha (Knox) Collins.

A homemaker, she was a lifetime Henry County resident and had lived in Greensboro and Knightstown. She was a member of the Greensboro Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include her husband, Denny F. Holder whom she married October 11, 1937; special friends, Danny and Belinda McGinn of Bloomington; and several cousins.

In addition to her parents, one sister, Ethlene Collins, preceded her in death.

Services were held Friday, February 20 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service with Rev. Gene Bennett officiating. Burial was in Green Hills Memory Gardens.

Visitation was held Thursday, February 19 at the funeral home.

Margaret R. Young

June 3, 1930 – Feb. 17, 2004

Former Knightstown resident, Margaret R. Young, 73, died Tuesday, February 17 at her residence in Leesburg. She was born June 3, 1930 in Knightstown, a daughter of the late Paul P. and Clara (Brumfield) LeMay.

Mrs. Young moved from Knightstown to the Tippecanoe area in 1997. She was a homemaker and was a well-known seamstress in the Knightstown area. She was a member of the Knightstown Friends Church and the Eastern Star in Knightstown and a member of American Legion Post #223 Ladies Auxiliary and the VFW Post #1342, both of Syracuse.

Survivors include her husband, William Young; three sons, Jack Ottinger of Kokomo, Bob (wife Paula) Ottinger of Knightstown, and John (wife Pam) Ottinger of Carthage; one sister, Martha (husband Jack) Link of Kokomo; one brother, DVM Larry (wife Nancy) LeMay of Naples, Fla; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

One brother preceded her in death.

Graveside services were held Friday, February 20 at Glen Cove Cemetery. Visitation was held Thursday, February 19 at Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home in Syracuse.

Memorial may be made to the American Legion Post #223 and VFW Post #1342, both in Syracuse.
