Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Ruby G. Shaw

June 21, 1911 – July 30, 2003

Ruby G. Shaw, 92, of Indianapolis died Wednesday, July 30 in Regency Place Nursing Home in Greenwood. She was born June 21, 1911 in Science Hill, Ky., a daughter of the late Will and Ida (Roy) Dick.

Mrs. Shaw and her late husband, Hobart, were former Knightstown residents and owned and operated the Shaw Bus Line in Henry County. She was a member of the Knightstown United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Ina Mae Walker of South Bend, Wash.; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Her husband, one son, one brother and three sisters preceded her in death.

Graveside services were held Friday, August 1 in the Lewisville Cemetery with Rev. Steve Brackney officiating.

Visitation was held at the Todd Funeral Home prior to services on Friday.

Walker B. Halcomb

Aug. 1, 1923 – July 30, 2003

Walker B. Halcomb, 79, of Knightstown died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 30 at his residence. He was born August 1, 1923 in Owslely County, Ky., a son of the late Emerson and Nellie (Minous) Halcomb.

A lifelong farmer, he had farmed in Henry County for many years. Mr. Halcomb previously lived in Metamora and Brookville where he had been a member of the Missionary Baptist Church in Metamora.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Loretta (Thompson) Halcomb; one son, Charles (wife Sharon) Halcomb of Knightstown; one daughter, Wanda (husband Don) Tirey of Vandalia, Ohio; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert (wife Peggy) Halcomb of Hagerstown; six sisters, Verna Mae Lessing of Carthage, Winnie Wyatt of Metamora, Dora Sloan of Rushville, Mattie Cecil of Rushville, Myrtle (husband Donald) Diewert of Greensburg, and Lorene Peters of Laurel; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, three brothers, Charles, Carl and Ernest Halcomb; one sister, Cassie Ledbetter; and two infant siblings preceded him in death.

Services were held Saturday, August 2 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service with Rev. Randy Sidwell officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery.

Visitation was held at the funeral home Friday, August 1.

Norman W. Ritchie

Feb. 9, 1932 – Aug. 4, 2003

Norman W. Ritchie, 71, of Mays died Monday, August 4. He was born February 9, 1932 in Jennings County, a son of Ronald W. and Martha Adams Ritchie.

Mr. Ritchie was a 1950 graduate of Mays High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and had been a self-employed painter for many years. He was a member of the Center Christian Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Nathan (wife Betty) of Columbus, and David (wife Sandra) of Plainfield; three nephews, two nieces and several great-nieces and nephews.

Graveside services and burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 7 in Center Cemetery in Rush County with Rev. Bill Worrell officiating.

Friends may call Wednesday, August 6 from 6-8 p.m. at Todd Funeral Home in Rushville.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Alice M. Gahimer

Oct. 27, 1927 – July 25, 2003

Alice M. (Redmon) Gahimer, 75, died Friday, July 25 at her home in Pendleton. She was born October 27, 1927 in Russell Springs, Ky., a daughter of the late Ivan and Annie (Gosser) Redmon.

Mrs. Gahimer had been employed at Western Electric for eight years, Guide Lamp for five years and Electra Corporation for eight years. She attended Calvary Baptist Church in Greenfield and formerly attended Eden United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Gregory Mark Bennett of Greenfield, and Timothy Neal Bennett of Pendleton; one daughter, Brenda Marie Guyer of Greenfield; two sisters, Ersie Hilbert of Hagerstown, and Versie Collins of New Palestine; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was receded in death by her husband of 26 years, Clarence L. “Bun” Gahimer, and her first husband, Paul H. Bennett, two brothers, Odell Redmon and Ed Redmon and three sisters, Elva Lane, Sylvia McGaughey and Lois Girt.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 29 at Erlewein Mortuary, Greenfield Chapel with Dr. Damon Jones officiating. Burial was in Mendon Cemetery near Pendleton.

Visitation was held Monday, July 28 at the mortuary.

Vickie Lou Harris

Aug. 8, 1951 – July 24, 2003

Vickie Lou Harris, 51, a resident of Shirley, died Thursday, July 24 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Hospital in Carmel following an extended illness. She was born August 8, 1951 in Knightstown, a daughter of the late George H. and Martha C. Wilson.

Mrs. Harris had been a beautician at Mr. Richards Barber and Beauty Show in Knightstown. She loved doing crafts.

Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Harris of Shirley; two brothers, Eugene (wife Lavada) Wilson of Carthage, and Ned L. (wife Susie) Wilson of Knightstown; four sisters, Juanita (husband Glenn) McIntosh of Knightstown, Josephine Buckley of Knightstown, Sara (husband John) McIntosh of Huntington and Jeanette (husband Carlo) Hooker of Knightstown; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Saturday, July 26 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service with James Jackson officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 12 noon until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.

Charles Whitfield

Mar. 12, 1919 – July 25, 2003

Charles Whitfield, 84, died Friday, July 25 at his rural Carthage home. He was born March 12, 1919 in Raywick, Ky., a son of the late Henry and Essie Whitfield.

Mr. Whitfield had lived in Carthage most of his life. He was a mail carrier and a member of the Fletcher United Methodist Church of Carthage. He married Fay Ellis on December 29, 1940 and she preceded him in death.

Survivors include one son, Joe (wife Elaine) Whitfield of Carthage; one daughter, Amy (husband Jeff) Combs of Carthage; three brothers, James, (wife Katie) Whitfield, Kenneth (wife Loretta) Whitfield of Knightstown, and Leon (wife Shirley) Whitfield of Shirley; five grandchildren and eight great-grandsons.

Services were held Tuesday, July 29 at Todd Funeral Home, Carthage Chapel in Carthage with Rev. David Bonne officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery with graveside military rites.

Visitation was Monday, July 28 at the funeral home.

John W. Gray

Oct. 6, 1921 – July 16, 2003

John W. Gray, 81, a resident of Greenfield and formerly of Wilkinson, died at his residence Wednesday, July 16. He was born October 6, 1921 in Tiff City, Mo., a son of the late Ora and Florence (Landon) Gray.

Mr. Gray was a World War II veteran serving in the U. S. Army. He retired from Fisk Sanitation and had worked at Dill-Fields Implements of Greenfield and the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson.

Survivors include three sons, Larry (wife Cynthia) Gray of New Palestine, Gary Gray of Johnson City, Tenn., and Greg (wife Martha) Gray of Greenfield; one daughter, Janice (husband Jeff) Silvey of McCordsville; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Calvin Gray of Shirley; two sisters, Viola Keerns of Pendleton, and Ora Lee Mann of Markleville; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Gray in 1989; a son, Mike Gray in 1994; and a granddaughter, Denessa Gray in 1971.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 19 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Chaplain Gordon Burton officiating. Burial was in McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson.

Visitation was held at the funeral home Friday, July 18.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ruth Lilly Hospice.
