Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Burnice Cooper

Oct. 11, 1905 - Dec. 22, 2002

Burnice Cooper, 97, of Knightstown, died Sunday, December 22 in Regency Place Nursing Home in Greenfield. She was born October 11, 1905 in Shelby County, a daughter of Grant and Eva Ball.

Mrs. Cooper, a graduate of Knightstown High School, had lived in Knightstown most of her life and was a former sales clerk for Allen's Young Fashions. She was a member of Knightstown Friends Meeting, Shirley Chapter 492, Order of Eastern Star and Psi Iota Xi Sorority of Knightstown.

Survivors include two grandsons, Bradley Cooper of Canyon County, Calif. and Barrett Cooper of Santa Ana, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Mary Alice Cooper of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Justine Cooper of Knightstown and Nelle Ball of Vina, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Cooper.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, December 24 in Glen Cove Cemetery, Knightstown, with Rev. Chris Sitler officiating.

Visitation for family and friends was held Monday, December 23 at the Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown.

Fay E. Lewis

June 30, 1930 - Dec. 26, 2002

Fay E. Lewis, 72, of Knightstown, died Thursday, December 26 in her home following an extended illness. She was born June 30, 1930 in Morehead, Ky., a daughter of the late Jesse and Gracie Egan.

A resident of Knightstown most of her life, she had worked for many years at Western Electric in Indianapolis. Mrs. Lewis was a member of the Knightstown United Methodist Church for many years. Fay was an avid gardener.

Survivors include her husband of 25 ½ years, John K. Lewis of Knightstown; a daughter, Tammy (husband Wesley) Watts of Knightstown; two stepsons, John K. Lewis of Carmel and Jeffrey M. (wife Debra) Lewis of Fishers; a stepdaughter, Jane Ann (husband Scott) Selm of Omaha, Neb.; a granddaughter, Jennifer Watts of Knightstown; two step-grandchildren, Ryan Meadows and Crystal Simpson; three sisters, Vesta (husband Horace) Hunt of Silver Springs, Fla., Thelma (husband Bob) Neal of Knightstown, Edna (husband Clifford) Dyer of Albany, Ky.; two brothers, Elmer Egan of Eaton, Ohio, and Leo "Bo" Egan of Grant City; and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents; an infant daughter, Teresa Lynn; four brothers, Ora, Clyde, Arthur and Herb Egan; and a sister, Betty Lou Garrison, preceded her in death.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 30 at Knightstown United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Brackney officiating and Rev. Bill House assisting. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery. Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, December 29 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service and an hour before the service on Monday at the Church.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Knightstown United Methodist Church or the Henry County Cancer Society.

Boyce S. Storie

July 10, 1940 - Jan. 11, 2003

Boyce S. Storie, 62, of New Castle, died Saturday, January 11 at Heritage House in New Castle. He was born July 10, 1940 in Springport, a son of the late Ridley Storie and Ethel (Black) Storie.

Mr. Storie had lived in Henry County most of his life. The 1958 graduate of Knightstown High School was a mechanic, a builder and a race car driver. He was also a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include one daughter, Kelli Storie of Middletown; one son, Kenneth Michael Kinnet of Middletown; four brothers, Paul Storie of New Castle, Thurman (wife Karen) Storie of New Castle, and Edward and Don (whereabouts unknown); and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 26 years, Diana (Messer) Storie whom he married in 1970 in Birdstown, Tenn. She died in May of 1996.

Following cremation, a public memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, January 15 at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Lewisville Chapel in Lewisville with Rev. Jim Tilton officiating.

Mamie Day

May 13, 1910 - Jan. 10, 2003

Mamie Day, 92 of New Castle, died Friday, January 10 at The Waters Nursing Center in Castle. She was born May 13, 1910 in Oxford, Ohio to the late Mr. and Mrs. John Pierson.

She was married to William Larkin Day who died in 1969. Mrs. Day was a farm wife.

Survivors include one son, Paul Day of Greenfield; one daughter, Marcella Parson of Kokomo; one sister, Ruth Raney of Indianapolis; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, a son, four brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, Jan. 15) at the Todd Funeral Home in Knightstown. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery, Knightstown. Visitation for family and friends was held Tuesday, January 14 at the funeral home.

Dewey S. Powers

Oct. 2, 1942 - Jan. 9, 2003

Dewey S. Powers, 60, of rural Rushville, died Thursday, January 9 in Rush Memorial Hospital in Rushville. He was born October 2, 1942 in Wofford, Ky., a son of the late William Mose and Clara Irene (Meadors) Powers.

The graduate of Tech High School in Indianapolis was a farmer and raised Angus beef cattle. He was treasurer of McCarter Cemetery Committee.

Mr. Powers is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Powers whom he married June 10, 1960; six daughters, Sharon (husband Mark) Rhodes of Indianapolis, Mary (husband Marvin) Wicker of Bloomington, Leslie (husband Greg) Yazel of Rushville, Andrea (husband Tim) Niedenthal of Rushville, Dawn (husband Darrell) Wineman of Knightstown, and Denise (husband James) Gulley of Rushville; two sons, John (wife Cindy) Powers, and Doug (husband Susan) Powers, both of Rushville; 13 grandchildren; and one brother, David Powers, Rockville.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, January 13 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rushville. Visitation was Sunday, January 12 at Burns Funeral Home in Milroy. Burial was in McCarter Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to McCarter Cemetery Fund in care of the Community Foundation in Rushville.

Jacob Lewis Ebbert

January 9, 2003

Jacob Lewis Ebbert, infant son of Andrew and Shantell (Brown) Ebbert of Shirley, died Thursday, January 9 at Hancock Memorial Hospital. He was born January 9 at Hancock Memorial.

He is survived by her parents; a sister, Emily Ebbert; grandparents, Jack and Marsha Brown of Greenfield, Martin and Pamela Ebbert of Shirley; great-grandparents, Charles and Maxine Bever of Greenfield, Evelyn Tanner of Greenfield and Charlotte Rumple of Knightstown; and aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by maternal grandmother, Karen Brown and great-grandmother, Irene Trowbridge.

Private services were held at the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson.

Donald E. Carpenter

Oct. 31, 1921 - Feb. 2, 2003

Donald E. "Don" Carpenter, 81, of Rushville, died Sunday, February 2 at Rush Memorial Hospital. He was born October 31, 1921 in Rushville, a son of Donald Edward and Pearl (English) Carpenter.

Mr. Carpenter was a graduate of Rushville High School and a WWII veteran of the United States Navy. He was a self employed Real Estate Broker and a member of the Main Street Christian Church in Rushville. Other memberships included the VFW, Phoenix Lodge #62 F&AM, York Rite, Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine Temple and HSUR Club, Rush County Senior Citizens - Area 9 volunteer of the year 2002.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Marjorie Ann Carpenter whom he married August 19, 1939; one daughter, Carlene (husband Richard) Clifford of Bryan, Texas; two sons, David A. (wife Lynn) Carpenter of Indianapolis, and Jay L. (wife Pamela) Carpenter of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

His parents and one sister, Dorothy Cordray, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 6 at Todd Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. Deann Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at East Hill Cemetery in Rushville with military graveside services.

Friends may call at the funeral home today (Wednesday, February 5) from 2-8 p.m.
