Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Betty L. Ogden
May 30, 1934 – Oct 14, 2002

Betty L. Hollingsworth Ogden, 68, of Williamsburg, died Monday, Oct 14 at Heritage House. She was born May 30, 1934 in Richmond to Leroy and Mary Gray Hollingsworth and lived in the Richmond area all her life.

Mrs. Ogden worked at Welliver’s Smorgasboard in Hagerstown for two years. She also worked as a cook for Servomation in the cafeteria at Natco. Mrs. Ogden was a member of the Steelworkers of Richmond Retirees.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Forrest “Moose” Ogden, three sons, Jerry A. (wife Nancy) Ogden of Centerville, Charles F. (wife Sandy) Ogden of Carlos, and Douglas E. (wife Peggy) Ogden of Carlos; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren; six sisters, Martha Kemplen and Agnes Warren of Richmond, Ruth Stafford of Cleveland, TN, Phyllis Schoop of Williamsburg, Dorothy McDivitt of Pershing, Nancy Honaker of Union City; seven brothers, Charles, Edward, Raymond, Donald, Bill and Robert Hollingsworth of Richmond, and James Hollingsworth of Fountain City; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Ogden was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Kathleen and Clara Ann Ogden; one brother, Billy Hollingsworth; and two sisters, Ethyl Hollingsworth and Mary E. Cross. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 17 at 1 p.m. at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home in Richmond with Pastor David Bales of Union Chapel United Methodist Church in Carlos, she attended church, officiating. Burial will follow in Earlham Cemetery. Visitation was Wednesday, October 16 from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1401 Chester Blvd., Richmond, IN 47374.

Dr. Richard McNabb
June 16, 1924 - Oct. 21, 2002

Dr. Richard Charles McNabb, 78, of Knightstown died Monday, October 21 at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. Dr. McNabb was born June 16, 1924 in Carthage, a son of the late Dr. George B. McNabb and Vera B. (Burkle) McNabb.

Dr. McNabb was a 1942 graduate of Carthage High School. In 1948 he graduated from Indiana University and was a 1952 graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine. In 1953-1959, he had a family practice in Knightstown. From 1959 to 1962, McNabb served a Residency in Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine and served a Fellowship in Child Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis in 1962-1963. He served as Clinical Director of Children's Services at LaRue Carter Hospital in Indianapolis from 1963-1975 and from 1976-1982 served as the Director of the Indiana Department of Mental Health. From 1982 until his retirement, McNabb had a private practice in Psychiatry in Greenwood.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. McNabb, a recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash and a Kentucky Colonel, was a former member of the Charles A. Beard School Corp. On December 29, 1997, he married Doris Brenan.

Survivors include his wife Doris (Borror) McNabb of Knightstown; four sons, Richard C. McNabb II, Sandwich, Mass., Jon D. McNabb of Greenwood, William Camp of Indianapolis and John Steurer of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; five daughters, Melissa B. Starny of Bloomington, Julie Berger, Ninevah, Nancy Puckett of New Castle, Carol Stutsman of Indianapolis and Shirley Richey of Indianapolis; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 25 at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel in Knightstown with Rev. David Bonne officiating. Burial will be made in Riverside Cemetery at Carthage.

Friends may call at the Todd Funeral Home on Thursday, October 24 from 2-8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Knightstown Alumni Scholarship Fund or to the Ft. Sanders Regional Hospital Hope Center.

Cary L. Ellis
July 29, 1941 - Oct. 18, 2002

Cary L. Ellis, 61, of Knightstown died Friday, October 18 at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. He was born in New Castle on July 29, 1941 to the late Max Gene Ellis and Betty (Ruby) Ellis who survives.

Mr. Ellis was a 1960 graduate of Knightstown High School and served in the U.S. Army. He retired from Delco Remy in Anderson. He was a member of the Knightstown American Legion where he served as chairman of the board and was a past commander. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge #17 in Indianapolis, the New Castle Eagles Lodge and the B.P.O.E. 1307 in Rushville.

On December 26, 1982, he married Margene Hopkins who survives. Other survivors include his mother, Betty Ellis of Fort Myers, Fla., two sons, Cary B. (wife Jessica) Ellis of Indianapolis and Shawn M. (wife Dorothy) Garrison of Oskaloosa, Iowa; one daughter, Dawnuell H. Ellis of New Castle; one brother, Brain C. Ellis of Spiceland; and three grandchildren, Amina Garrison, Madison G. Clarke and Bradyn C. Ellis.

Visitation was held at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel in Knightstown on Monday, October 21. The Knightstown American Legion will conduct military graveside rites on Saturday, October 26 at 10 a.m. at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.

Skara Brae
July 24, 1928 – Oct. 21, 2002

Graveside services for Skara Brae, 74, of Knightstown were held Monday, October 21at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown with Rev. Mark Tabb officiating. She was born July 24, 1928.

Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel in Knightstown was in charge of arrangements.

Virginia R. Roberts
Dec. 27, 1929 - Oct. 19, 2002

Virginia R. Roberts, 72, of Shirley, died Saturday, October 19 at the Heritage House Nursing Home in New Castle. A daughter of Kenneth Pratt and Mabel Torn Pratt, she was born December 27, 1929 in Flint, Mich.

Mrs. Roberts was a 1946 graduate of Flint Central High School. She was formerly employed by Western Electric and was a nurse's aide at Sugar Creek Nursing home. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband Charles Roberts whom she married February 25, 1950. Other survivors include one son, Kenneth Roberts of Acworth, Ga.; three daughters, Janet Labreche of Michigan City, Sherry (husband Daniel) of Gilmore of Brownsburg, and Edna (husband David) Jones of Shirley; two step-sisters, Lilian Minton and Evaleen (husband Michael) Hainz, both of South Lyons, Mich.; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Services for Mrs. Roberts will be at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, October 23) at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel, Knightstown. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation was held at the funeral home Tuesday, October 22.

Sarah Christell Hastings
Sept. 13, 1923 - Oct. 16, 2002

Sarah Cristell Hastings, 79, of Wilkinson, died Wednesday, October 16 in Brandywine Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Greenfield.

She was born September 13, 1923 in Byrdstown, Tenn., a daughter of the late Harvey and Olive (Garret) Spears. She was a homemaker.

Surviving are two sons, Harold "Van" (wife Jeanne) Hastings of Wilkinson and Kerry (wife Rosalie) Hastings of Shelbyville; two daughters, Pamela (husband Paul) Broadwater of Wilkinson and Charlene (husband John) Gilbert of Wilkinson; 17 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Nova Lewis of Muncie, Christina Cowen of Cullman, Ala., Elise Rohrer of Kokomo and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Hastings in 1992; one son, Charles Hastings in 1998; three brothers, Ernest Spears, Arnold Spears and Raymond Spears.

Services were held at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson Saturday, October 19 followed by burial in Glen Cove Cemetery, Knightstown. Visitation was held from 4-8 p.m. Friday, October 18.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or the American Kidney Fund.

Russell E. Trees
Aug. 11, 1902 - Oct. 18, 2002

Russell E. Trees, 100 years old and a lifelong resident of Warrington, died Friday, October 18 in Regency Place Convalescent Center in Greenfield following an extended illness.

He was born August 11, 1902 in Warrington, a son of the late Edgar and Laura Mae (Keller) Trees. In December of 1925, he married Dorothy Bennett, the daughter of Edgar and Ethel Bennett of Knightstown. Mr. Trees grew up in the Warrington area and was a graduate of Wilkinson High School, graduating in 1921. He then attended Olivet College in Olivet, Ill. and earned his BS degree in mathematics, history and religion, subjects he could use in any religious organization. He worked at Delco Remy for 18 years and was a member of the Warrington Nazarene Church where he pastored for nine years.

In 1946, he built and constructed Tree's Grocery Store which was opened from January 1945 to 1975 when he retired from the business. After retirement, he spent his winters in Florida and the summers in Warrington working fulltime at the McCray Cemetery. He was a member of Gideons and the Greenfield Historical Society.

He is survived by one son, Paul Trees of Wilkinson; one daughter, Ruth Cole of Greenfield; two granddaughters, Michelle Hudson of Shirley and Paula Swihart of Middlebury; six great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Forrest Trees of Greenfield and Evert Trees of Warrington; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Bennett Trees and his second wife Flora Willingham Trees; and two sisters, Cecil Harris and Eva Keesling.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 22 at Condo & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Brent Hopkins officiating. Burial was in McCray Cemetery at Wilkinson.

Visitation was Monday, October 21 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Warrington Nazarene Church.
