Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Ruth A. Gross

Dec. 4, 1916 – Nov. 5, 2001

Former Knightstown resident, Ruth A. Gross, 84, of Cambridge City, died Monday, November 5 at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. She was born in Boone County on December 4, 1916, a daughter of the late Ivan and Oma (Dulin) Shoemaker.

On October 19, 1935, she married Arthur D. Gross who preceded her in death on July 13, 1978. She was a homemaker and a member of the Knightstown Nazarene Church, Greenfield American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, Eagles and the WAR Mothers of Greenfield.

Survivors include one son, Dory (wife Jerri) Gross, Bentonville; two daughters, Phyllis (husband James William) Car-field, Vevay, and Donna Kay (husband Billy) Strange, Kansas; one brother, Dora C. Shoemaker, Lebanon; 24 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, one brother and one sister.

Services for Mrs. Gross will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 9 at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel in Knightstown with Rev. Randy Gross, Rev. Danny Strange and Rev. Billy Strange officiating. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery, Knightstown.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home on Thursday, November 8.

Eva Martha Livesay

Sept. 10, 1905 – Nov. 2, 2001

Eva Martha Livesay, 86, of Shirley, died Friday, November 2 at St. John’s Medical Center in Anderson following a brief illness. She was born September 10, 1905 in Sneedville, Tenn., a daughter of the late James and Emily Burchett Cantwell.

Mrs. Livesay moved to Shirley in 1997 from Tennessee. She attended Kingston Ave. Baptist Church in Anderson.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Livesay of Middletown; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Pearl Purkey of Morristown, Tenn., Hazel Trent of Kingsport, Tenn., Millie (husband Elmer) Green of Morristown, Tenn., Ibbie Maxey of Sneedville, Tenn., and Jewel Green of Morristown, Tenn.; one brother, Jeff (wife Myrtle) Cantwell of Sneedville, Tenn. and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fayette; a daughter, Irene; and two sons, A.J. and Clyde.

Services were held at Briar Creek Baptist Church in Sneedville, Tenn. Ballard and Sons Funeral Home, Middletown Chapel was in charge of local arrangements.

Sharon Lynn Brenan

Jan. 10, 1935 – Nov. 8, 2001

Sharon Lynn Brenan, 66, a resident of Knightstown, died Thursday, November 8 at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield following a brief illness. She was born January 10, 1935 in Kansas City, Mo., a daughter of the late Carl and Veda (Qualls) Spencer.

Sharon was a beloved mother and grandmother who was active in the community. She will be sadly missed by the lives she touched, most recently in her work with her daughter in the daycare business.

Survivors include a son, Michael Brenan of Columbia, S.C.; three daughters, Lorri Justice, Hamilton, Ohio, Janine Tague and Dana True, both of Knightstown; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one sister, Joyce Hartman of Independence, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Two brothers, Bud O’Neil and Richard Spencer preceded her in death.

Memorial services were held Saturday, November 10 at Knightstown Friends Church with Curt Shaw officiating. Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson handled arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Knightstown Library, 5 E. Main St., Knightstown, IN 46148.

Barbara Jo Roberts

Sept. 30, 1939 – Nov. 7, 2001

Barbara Jo (McManigell) Roberts, 62, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, November 7 at her home after an extended illness. She was born September 30, 1939 in Anderson, a daughter of the late Frank and Ruth (Boling) McManigell.

Mrs. Roberts was a 1957 graduate of Anderson High School. She had worked at Eastern Hancock High School in the cafeteria and most recently at Hancock Memorial Hospital as a cashier.

Survivors include her husband, George Roberts, who she married December 8, 1957; two daughters, Robin Roberts of Carthage and JoAnn (husband Chris) Clark of Indianapolis; two grandchildren, Leanna (husband Robin) Lowry of New Castle and Sam Roberts of Carthage; one great-granddaughter, Madalyn Jo Lowry of New Castle; one brother, Bill McManigell of Alexandria; four sisters, Jane Hoover and Shirley Rhinehart, both of Anderson, June Kellogg of Galion, Ohio and Jean Smith of St. Louis, Mo.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Jo Lowry; sisters, Marjorie Leahy, Virginia McKinley and Sandra McManigell; and brothers, Frank, Francis, Kenneth and Donald McManigell.

Memorial services were held Saturday, November 10 at the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Rev. Fred Powers officiating. Visitation was on Friday, November 9.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hancock Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit, 801 N. State St., Greenfield, IN 46140.

Ralph E. Stover

Nov. 24, 1922 – Nov. 9, 2001

Ralph E. Stove, 78, of Spiceland, died Friday, November 9 at the Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle after a short illness. Ralph was born November 24, 1922 in rural New Lisbon, a son of the late Harry R. and Irene Cordell Stover.

Ralph graduated from the New Lisbon High School in 1941 and was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II. He had made his home in Spiceland for the past 53 years. He retired from Ingersoll/Avesta Steel in New Castle in 1981 after 34 years of service. Also he was a member of Liberty Baptist Church at Dunreith. Mr. Stover enjoyed camping and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Dorothy L. Schweikhardt Stover whom he married December 21, 1943 in New Castle; on son, Kenneth D. (wife Jan) Stover of Spiceland; one daughter, Virginia K. Adams of New Castle; four grandchildren, Gene and Virginia Adams and Julia M. and Katie J. Stover; two sisters, Ruth Oler of Maxton, N.C. and Helen Miller of Hagerstown; one brother, Paul Stover of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Lewisville Chapel with the Revs. Leonard and Tim Dice officiating. Burial will follow in the Circle Grove Cemetery at Spiceland.

Visitation was Tuesday, November 13 at the funeral home.

Delores Felker Jones

Feb. 19, 1925 – Nov. 18, 2001

Delores “Dee” Felker Jones, 76, of Knightstown, died Sunday, November 18 at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove. She was born February 19, 1925, a daughter of the late Harold and Minnie (Nelson) Felker.

Mrs. Jones attended Rockford College in Rockford, Ill. and had worked as an office manager for Dr. Gatmaitan in Knightstown prior to her retirement. She was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church, Tri Kappa Sorority Associate Chapter, Eastern Star, Knightstown Historical Society, Shakespeare Club, Knightstown American Legion Auxiliary, and had been a member of the Knightstown Zoning Board.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Rulo Jones on June 15, 1988.

Surviving are one son, Tim (wife Genea) Jones of Fountaintown; one daughter, Tena Jones of Knightstown; four grandsons, Joshua Jones, Jacob, Jessup and Nathan Harris; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at the Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel in Knightstown with Rev. David Bremer officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery.

Visitation was Tuesday, November 20 at the funeral home.

John J. Wisehart

March 2, 1939 – Nov. 17, 2001

John J. Wisehart, 62, a resident of rural Shirley, died Saturday, November 17 at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield as the result of an automobile accident.

He was born March 2, 1939 in Hancock County, the son of the late Chester and Elizabeth Wisehart.

Mr. Wisehart was employed by GasAmerica as a service technician since 1984. He had sold Moormans Feed and was a former self-employed plumbing, heating and electrical contractor. He was a member of the Shirley Masonic Lodge #531.

He is survived by two sons, Jay Wisehart of Champaign, Ill., and Mark Wisehart of Greenfield; one daughter, Sally Wisehart of New Castle; two sisters, Kaleda Goudy of Shirley, and Cathy Mukes of New Castle; 6 grandchildren; a companion, Pam Townsend of Muncie; and one nephew and two nieces.

Wisehart was preceded in death by a granddaughter.

Services will be held today (Wednesday) at the Condo & Son Funeral Home with rev. Kurt Stone officiating. Burial will follow in Mechanicsburg Cemetery.

Visitation was held at the funeral home Tuesday, November 20.
