Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Elbert More Tompkins

April 12, 1927 – November 23, 2011

Elbert More Tompkins, 84, of Knightstown, died Nov. 23.

He was born April 12, 1927, in Jabez, Ky., a son of the late Estust and Allie McGowan Tompkins.

Mr. Tompkins was a U.S. Army veteran and a retired truck driver. He attended the Church of the Nazarene. He was an avid bowler.

Survivors include his sons, Ronnie (wife, Sye) Tompkins of Knightstown and Johnny Tompkins of Springfield; three grandchildren; one sister, Renia Goben of Florida; one brother, Marshall (wife, Vera) Tompkins of Fortville; stepson Danny Baker of Knightstown; sister-in-law Dolly Tompkins of Kennard; two aunts, Sylvia Tompkins of Jabez, Ky. and Theria Tompkins of Indiana; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Tompkins; one sister, May Cash; and four brothers, Carlie, John, Rufus and Travis Tompkins.

Visitation and funeral services were Nov. 28 at Somerset Undertaking Co. & Crematory in Somerset, Ky. with Dan Jones officiating and military honors performed by American Legion Post #38. Burial followed at Mill Springs National Cemetery in Nancy, Ky.

Robert Nelson

March 11, 1923 – December 3, 2011

Robert Nelson, 88, of Greenfield, died Dec. 3.

He was born March 11, 1923, in Shirley, the son of the late Corda Nelson Pitts and Palmer Nelson.

Mr. Nelson was a member of Kennard Christian Church and retired from Delco Remy in Anderson.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Nelson; three children, Pamela (husband, Robert) Neal of Knightstown, Barbara (husband, Richard) Glidden of Greenwood and Rob (wife, Linda) Nelson of Indianapolis; six stepchildren, Karen (husband, Phil) Hinchman, Connie (husband, Rick) Hoy, Donna Kendall, Lorie (husband, Lee) Lutes, Steve Kendall and Denise (husband, Jim) Compliment; four grandchildren, Jacqueline Gabbard, Scott Neal, Shane Glidden and Ryan Glidden; 15 step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 18 step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Thelma Nelson and Juanita Nelson; sisters Virginia Stohler, Marjorie Lowe and Ruth Plummer; stepdaughter Jeannine Oldham; his mother-in-law; three brothers-in-law; and two nephews.

Visitation is Dec. 8 from 4-8 p.m. and funeral services are Dec. 9 at 10 a.m. at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Marion McFarland and David Woods officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.

Barbara J. Wilson

May 17, 1935 – November 30, 2011

Barbara J. Wilson, 76, of Warsaw, died Nov. 30 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Warsaw.

She was born May 17, 1935, in Knightstown, the daughter of the late Leonard and Anita (Alexander) Stacey.

She was a 1953 graduate of Knightstown High School and was employed at Knightstown Telephone Company, United Telephone Company and Sprint in Knightstown. Since 1972, Mrs. Wilson had lived in Warsaw. She attended Warsaw Community Church, was a member of Chapman Lake Association, Independent Telephone Association and Brotherhood and Sisterhood of Wilkinson.

Survivors include three children, Debra Jo Kraft of Warsaw, Michael (wife, Tracy) Wilson of Leesburg and Patricia (husband, Paul) Zerr of Gilbert, Ariz.; foster daughter Nancy (Goodwin) Inch of Tennessee; brother Lee (wife, Bernice) Stacey of New Castle; grandchildren Riley, Morgan, Kaylin, Jennifer, Julia, Robbie, Gage, Peyton, Jennifer and Patrick; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Junior Wilson.

Visitation was Dec. 4 and funeral services were Dec. 5 at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel in Warsaw with Chaplain Bob Jarboe officiating. Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery in Warsaw.

Janet Marie Goudy

October 13, 1942 – November 29, 2011

Janet Marie Goudy, 69, died Nov. 29.

She was born Oct. 13, 1942, in Indianapolis, a daughter of the late Clarence and Myrtle Wurz.

She graduated from Manual High School in 1960. She was a member of Wilkinson Church of Christ, where she was secretary for many years. Mrs. Goudy was a Bible Bowl team sponsor for many years, helping lead her team to a second place finish in the national competition. She was known as a loving family member.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald R. Goudy; two daughters, Diane (husband, Richard) Goudy-Wilson and Lisa (husband, George) Molwitz; grandchildren Jade, Mia and Macy Wilson, and Seth, Hannah and Luke Molwitz; three sisters, Roberta (husband, James) Perkins, Judy Wurz and Sandra (husband, Gene) Compton; three brothers, Donald (wife, Judy) Wurz, James (wife, Kay) Wurz and David (wife, Rita) Wurz; sister-in-law Mary Ellen Wurz; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Kenneth and Patricia Jessup and Charles and Sandy Goudy; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, C. Richard Wurz, Jr.

Visitation was Dec. 2 and funeral services were Dec. 3 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Ryan McCarty and Russ Lutes officiating. Burial followed at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson.

Vesta E. Hunt

September 29, 1918 - November 14, 2011

Vesta E. Hunt, 93, of Silver Springs, Fla., formerly of the Knightstown area, died Nov. 14.

She was born in Rowan County, Ky. and moved to Merritt Island, Fla., 42 years ago.

Mrs. Hunt was a homemaker who enjoyed her family and her pets.

Survivors include her daughter, Toni Hunt of Silver Springs, Fla.; a brother, Leo "Bo" (wife, Jean) Egan of Shirley; a grandson, H. L. Winfree of Ocala, Fla; and a great-grandson, Kaiden Winfree.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace E. Hunt.

Graveside services will be Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown is in charge of arrangements.

Terry Lee Hardymon

March 7, 1963 - December 11, 2011

Terry Lee Hardymon, 48, of Charlottesville, died Dec. 11 at his home.

He was born March 7, 1963, in Flemingsburg, Ky., a son of Gracie (Johnson) Hardymon and the late Mack Burges.

Mr. Hardymon was a 1981 graduate of Christian Academy School in Charlottesville. He also attended Eastern Hancock schools. He worked mostly in grocery stores and was a former manager of IGA in Greenfield. Mr. Hardymon enjoyed NASCAR, fishing and caring for animals.

Survivors include his mother, Gracie Hardymon; two brothers, Tom (wife, Patricia) Hardymon of Knightstown and Todd Hardymon of Charlottesville; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Carolyn Sue Hardymon and Lisa Kay Hardymon; his maternal grandparents, Hildreth and Audrey Johnson; and his paternal grandparents, Henry and Gladys Hardymon.

Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown with Rev. Gene Bennett officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Visitation is noon until time of services on Dec. 14.

Maxine Bever

April 4, 1924 – December 10, 2011

Maxine Bever, 87, of Greenfield, died Dec. 10 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield.

She was born April 4, 1924, in Carthage, a daughter of the late George and Mildred (Davis) Jackson.

Mrs. Bever retired from the cafeteria at Eastern Hancock Elementary School. She was a member of Greenfield Church of Christ.

Survivors include two granddaughters, Shantelle (husband, Andy) Ebbert of Shirley and Alisha (husband, Giuseppe) Cavaletto of Greenfield; four great-grandchildren, Emily and Abigail Ebbert of Shirley and Tyler and Mikayla Cavaletto; one sister, Evelyn Tanner of Greenfield; a son-in-law, Jack (wife, Marsha) Brown of Greenfield; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Bever; two daughters, Linda Bever and Karen Brown; and a great-grandson, Jacob Ebbert.

Visitation was Dec. 13 and funeral services were Dec. 14 at Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Patrick McDaniel officiating. Burial followed at Park Cemetery in Greenfield.
