Frances I. Gearhart
June 3, 1910 - Nov. 22, 2001
Frances Irvin Gearhart, 91, of 201 N. Oak St., Buchanan, Mich., passed away of natural causes in the late afternoon of Thursday, Nov. 22, in the Silverbrook Manor Nursing Home, Niles, Mich. Mrs. Gearhart was born on June 3, 1910, in Chicago, Ill., to the late Dorothy (Last) and Edward Irvin. On Feb. 13, 1940, in St. Joseph, Mich., Frances married Kenneth A. Gearhart, who also preceded her in death on May 23, 1998. Mrs. Gearhart is survived by a daughter, Catherine (Frank) Bell of Marshall, Mich.; three sons, Edward Gearhart of Sturgis, Mich., Paul A. (Jane) Gearhart of Scottsdale, Ariz., and John D. (Paulette) Gearhart of Fitzgerald, Ga.; a sister, Mary I. Sumney of Athens, Ohio; and by eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Frances was a homemaker, a member of the Eastern Star, and a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. She supported her late husband, Kenneth, in his business, Gearhart Milling and Job Works, served funeral dinners for years at St. Anthony Catholic Church, enjoyed playing Scrabble and working jigsaw puzzles, and loved her pet cats and dog. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26, in St. Anthony Catholic Church, 509 W. Front St., Buchanan. Father Charles Page will officiate. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 25, in the Swem Funeral Home, 301 W. Front St., Buchanan. A prayer service followed by a Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church and/or to the Humane Society of SW Michigan.

June M. Gurbick
June 21, 1932 - Nov. 18, 2001
June M. Gurbick, 69, of Inglewood Place, South Bend, Ind., died following an illness at 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, in the Healthwin Specialized Care Facility. Mrs. Gurbick was born June 21, 1932, in Middletown, Ohio, to James and Evelyn (Pierce) Fagan, and had lived in South B end since 1955. On March 14, 1953, in Montgomery, Ala., as June M. Fagan, she married Tom Gurbick, who survives. She is also survived by a son, Tim E. Gurbick at home; two sisters, Carol Ralston of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Dorothy (Harold) Wilson of Germantown, Ohio; and by one brother, David (Pam) Fagan of Amherst, N.H. Mrs. Gurbick was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. She was a very active member of the Cathedral of St. James Episcopal, and loved flower gardening, especially the type of flowers that attracted butterflies. She was also an avid bird watcher. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27th, in the Cathedral of St. James Episcopal, 117 N. Lafayette Blvd., with the Rev. Robert Bizzaro officiating. Cremation has taken place and entombment in the columbarium of the cathedral will follow the service. There will be no visitation. Dean A. Hokanson
Sept. 12, 1933 - Nov. 22, 2001
Dean Arthur Hokanson, 68, of rural Cassopolis, Mich., passed away peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 22, in the Lakeland Medical Center, Niles, Mich. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in the McLauchlin-Clark Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Services will also include military honors. He was born Sept. 12, 1933, in Chicago, Ill., to Arthur and Florence Gertrude (Quhlow) Hokanson. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army, and a member of VFW Post 1855 in Dowagiac, Mich. He retired from the Cassopolis branch of the U.S. Postal Service after serving more than 30 years as a rural carrier on routes 1 and 3. He was a member of the Michigan Rural Letter Carriers Union and was a steward with the Rural Carriers Union. He worked at Sundstrand for over 10 years, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, mushroom hunting and was a hobby farmer. He recently celebrated his 50th class reunion with the 1951 Class of Dowagiac Union High School. He was preceded in death by parents, the mother of his children, Joan Hokanson, and by a dear friend, Nancy Beckwith. He is survived by two sons, John (Julie) Hokanson of Dowagiac and Stephan (Dana) Hokanson of Grand Rapids, Mich.; three daughters, Barbara (Richard) Hicks of Cassopolis, and Sue and Jan Hokanson of Granite, Okla.; one granddaughter, Lane Arden Hokanson; two sisters, Barbara (L.D.) Rockwell of Dowagiac and Arlene "Sis" (Don) Funk of New Buffalo, Mich.; several nieces and nephews; and by his beloved cat, Sam. Memorial contributions may be made to the V.F.W. or to donor's choice.

Sara F. Keefer
Jan. 10, 1925 - Nov. 20, 2001
Sara Frances Keefer, 76, of Fellows Street in South Bend, passed away at her residence of natural causes on Tuesday, November 20, 2001. Mrs. Keefer was born January 10, 1925, in Montgomery, Alabama, to Mr. and Mrs. George and Jeanette McNulty. On January 29, 1988, she married Norman R. Keefer in Mishawaka, Indiana. He survives. Also surviving is her daughter, Jean Thomas and her husband, Larry of LaPaz, Indiana; five grandchildren, Brandon Thomas Sr. of LaPaz, Kim Thomas of Nappanee, Deb Swihart of Warsaw, Donna Roberson of Bremen, and Brenda Hummel of Bremen; along with 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Friends called from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, November 23, 2001, in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, Osceola. Services were conducted Saturday, November 24, 2001, at noon in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, with calling one hour prior to services. Interment followed at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola. Mrs. Keefer was employed as a seamstress by Imperial Fabric. She also attended the Baptist C hurch in Mishawaka.

Gigi Kensinger

Gigi Kensinger, 42, died at her home in Texas on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001. She was a graduate of Mishawaka High School, class of 1978, with whom she shared many wonderful reunions. Gigi was a longtime resident of Los Angeles, Calif., where she graduated from Cal State University-Northridge, and began her career in contract negotiations. She was a highly successful professional and well-respected nationally. A founder of the WIT Girls (World International Travelers), Gigi was never the backup singer. With her joyous spirit she gladdened each life that she touched. Her courage in facing life's challenges fully serves as an inspiration to all who shared her journey. She proudly told her story in the book " DES Stories. " Born Jan. 13, 1959, she is the daughter of Mary Virginia Kensinger and the late Robert Kensinger, and a sister of Michael (San Francisco), Tim (Orroyo Grande, Calif.), Keary (San Francisco), Kathy (Glendale), Mark (Lakeville, Ind.), Paul (San Francisco), Maureen Nelson (Mishawaka, Ind.), and Loretta (Fresno, Calif.). Gigi also leaves nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, aunts, cousins and extended family of loyal and loving friends. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Nov. 25, in the Thallemer-Goethals Funeral Home, Mishawaka, followed by a memorial/eulogy service from 7 to 8 p.m. A funeral M ass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26, in St. Monica Church, Mishawaka, with Fr. EDENTON , NC Agnes Lelia Long, 91, of 18 Mark Drive, Edenton, died Friday afternoon, Nov. 23, in Chowan Hospital. A native of South Bend, Ind., she was the widow of Don Long, and the daughter of the late Mary Rose Humphrey and Joseph Francis Bueche. She was a retired sales clerk with Inwood's Store in South Bend, a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church and its Women's Club. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Jo Clapper of Edenton; a sister, Mary Virginia Hahaj of South Bend; and by two grandchildren and their spouses, Donald and Leslie Clapper and Shelly and David Atkinson. She was preceded in death by a son, Ricky Long; a sister, Genevieve Sieg; and by two brothers, Louis Bueche and Eugene Bueche. A memorial M ass will be celebrated at 7:00 Monday evening in St. Anne's Catholic Church, with Fr. Roch Drozdzik as celebrant. Stephania B. McKesson

Stephania B. McKesson, 86, of Woodside, South Bend, Ind., died at 8:08 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 22, in the Hospice House of St. Joseph County. She was born on Aug. 28, 1915, in Czechoslo-vakia, and was brought to the United States as a young child. She lived most of her life in South B end. In October 1933 in Culver, Ind., she married Lloyd E. McKesson, who preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 1970. She is survived by a daughter, Esther Kaye Rowe of South Bend; a son, Brent B. McKesson, Chief Master Sergeant, Air F orce (retired), of South B end; and by one grandson, James M. and Gretchen Nieb of South B end. Stephania was an avid reader, gardener and a supreme dog love. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She was a member of the Progress Club and Audubon Society. As per her specific wishes, there will be no visitation or services. James H. McKrill

James H. McKrill, 77, of 12th Street, Mishawaka, Ind., passed away, Wednesday, Nov. 21, in the Countryside Place Nursing Home, Mishawaka. James was born in War-saw, Ind., on May 15, 1924, as the son of the late Charles Ed-ward and Gert-rude (Brown) McKrill. James was preceded in death by one son, Tom; one daughter, Judy Sharp; one brother, Jack McKrill; and by two sisters, Kay Killen and Betty Drahos. James is survived by two daughters, Trudy (Raul) Rodriguez and Carolyn Cassel, both of South Bend, Ind.; three sons, Danny McKrill of San Diego, Calif., Chuck McKrill of Nashville, Tenn., and James McKrill of South Bend; one sister, Sandy Cherry of Broken Arrow, Okla.; and by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. James lived in the South Bend/Mishawaka area his entire life. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26, in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 West 8th Street, Mishawaka. Mary M. Miller
Aug. 30, 1907 - Nov. 21, 2001
Mary M. Miller, 94 years old, residing on U.S. 6, Bremen, IN, passed away at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 21, 2001, in the Bremen Community Hospital. Mary M. Miller was born near Denver, IN, on August 30, 1907, the seventh child of Edwin W. Hoover and Luemma (Dawald) Hoover. She moved with her parents to a farm near Culver, IN, in 1920. Mrs. Miller attended Manchester College and became an intermediate grade school teacher. She taught for 20 years in Fulton and St. Joseph Counties, retiring in 1969. On June 26, 1930, in Culver, she married Zeno W. Miller. They lived in and near South Bend until 1945, moving to a farm near North Liberty. Later they moved to Bremen. Mrs. Miller is survived by twin daughters, Mrs. Richard (Mary Joan) Knepp of Bremen and Betty Jean Roberts of Evanston, IL; a son, Marvin W. Miller of San Jose, CA; six grandchildren, Carol Knepp, Debra Cartwright, Natalie Roberts, Julie Miller, Paul Miller, and David Miller; two great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her husband, Zeno W. Miller; her parents; two brothers, Everly E. Hoover and Paul A. Hoover; and four sisters, Elizabeth Leffel, Zella Sanders, Ruth Marburger and Rhoda (Wise) Leffel. Mrs. Miller was a member of the Maple Grove United Methodist Church moving her membership from Grace United Methodist Church, Bremen. She was a Sunday School teacher for more than 45 years. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 28, 2001, at the Maple Grove United Methodist Church, 22019 New Road, South Bend. Rev. Todd Mushaney officiating. Graveside services and burial will follow at Fair Cemetery, North Liberty. Friends may visit with the family from 3 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 27th, at the Palmer Funeral Home, 314 S. J. Gordon Rich, M.D.
May 17, 1934 - Nov. 23, 2001
EAST LONGMEADOW, MA Dr. James Gordon Rich, 67, passed away Friday, Nov. 23, after a long battle with cancer. He had practiced orthopedic surgery in this area since 1972. Dr. Rich was born in Chicago, Ill., May 17, 1934. He was raised in the upper M idwest and in Charlotte, N.C. He graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1952. He obtained an undergraduate degree from Duke University in Durham, N.C., in 1956 and was awarded the MD and MS degrees from the University of Chicago in 1960. He obtained training in general surgery at Columbia-Presbyterian M edical Center in New York City and on the former Harvard Surgical Service at Boston City Hospital. His training in orthopedic surgery was obtained at the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Surgical Residency Program and included residency positions at Massachusetts General Hospital, the Peter Bent and Robert Breck Brigham Hospitals, and the Boston Children's Hospital Medical Center. In 1967 he was drafted into the United States Army Medical Corps during the Vietnam War. He held the rank of major and served as an orthopedic surgeon at the United States Army Orthopedic Specialized Treatment Center at Fort Gordon, Ga., just outside Augusta. His time of service lasted until 1969 during which time he patched up the human wreckage that resulted from the unfortunate conflict. After discharge from the Army, he was a member of the fulltime faculty at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. In 1972 Dr. Rich came to Springfield to engage in the private practice of orthopedic surgery in association with Dr. Elmer Franseen, and worked with Dr. Franseen until the latter's retirement in 1979. Thereafter, Dr. Rich practiced independently for the most part, although he worked in association with Dr. Leonard Wagner from 1982 to 1988. Dr. Rich was on the medical staffs of Baystate Medical Center and Mercy Hospital. He had also served on the staffs of Providence Hospital, Noble Hospital and Ludlow Hospital. He served as chief of orthopedic surgery at Baystate Medical Center (north campus), and as Director of Rehabilitation Services at Baystate Medical Center (north campus). He served as chief of orthopedic surgery at Mercy Hospital. He was a past president of the Hampden District Medical Society. He was an advocate of the interests of private-practice physicians and their patients. In this capacity he sometimes crossed swords with hospital administrators, health plan administrators, politicians and the like. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Hampden District Medical Society and the Massachusetts M edical Society. He was a diplomat of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Through his affiliation with Baystate Medical Center, he served as an associate clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at Tufts University School of M edicine. As the socio-economic environment for the practice of medicine became increasingly more difficult, Dr. Rich engaged in sporadic guerrilla warfare against the forces of evil and darkness who wished to denigrate, diminish and demean the healing profession to which he devoted his working lifetime. He retired from active practice 1999. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Audrey Higgins Rich; a son, James Allan Rich of Springfield; a daughter, Karen Rich of New York City. He enjoyed the company of two vibrant sons-in-law, John Funk and Charles Garcia. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, in the First Congregational Church at the corner of Lathrop and Park Street in West Springfield-just off the traffic circle on the West Springfield side of the North End Bridge. It is requested that flowers not be sent. In lieu of flowers and such, money contributions to either Baystate M edical Center, Department of Surgery, 280 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104; or Mercy Hospital Department of Surgery, 299 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01101; or Hospice of Pioneer Valley, P.O. Box 9058, Springfield, MA 01102-9058, will be gratefully acknowledged. Burial will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Truro, MA, at the convenience of the family. Ervin J. Wierzbinski
Mr. Wierzbinski passed away in his home in North Olmsted, Ohio, following a time with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Lorraine J. (nee: Hoffman) of North Olmsted; loving father of Michael J. (Kelly) of Dallas, Texas, Mary Lynn of Cleveland, Ohio; dearest son of Louise Szabo of South Bend, Ind.; dear brother of Jerome (Doris) of Fort Wayne, Ind., Ralph Wiley (Joyce) of Dallas. Funeral Mass 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in The Church of St. Clarence, 30106 Lorain Road, North Olmsted. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Kacirek Funeral Home, 29060 Lorain Road (at Stearns Road), North Olmsted. Interment will be private. Br. Thomas J. Balthazor
Feb. 12, 1940 - Nov. 7, 2001
Brother Thomas James Balthazor, C.S.C., 61, died of an apparent heart attack on Wednesday, Nov. 7, in LaPorte, Ind., while facilitating a group counseling session. He was born on Feb. 12, 1940, in Fond du Lac, Wis., the son of Clarence and Dorothy (Dobyns) Balthazor. He is survived by a brother, J ohn, and a sister, Ellen. Brother Thomas attended Catholic schools in Fond du Lac, and after graduation was employed briefly as a staff person at St. Joseph School and at Camp Stronghead near Fond du Lac. He joined the Brothers of Holy Cross at Watertown, Wis., in June 1958, received the habit of the brothers Aug. 15, 1958, pronounced temporary vows on Aug. 16 the following year, and his perpetual vows on Aug. 16, 1962. Multi-talented, highly professional in all he did, and extraordinarily generous with his time and expertise, Brother Thomas was a chef at Columba Hall, Notre Dame, Ind., from 1959-61, with a brief time-out as food service manager of Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills, Ohio. He studied at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas, from 1961-64, and was assigned to the staff of St. Charles Boys Home, Milwaukee, Wis., for the 1964-65 year. From 1965-68 he taught at Holy Trinity High School, Chicago, Ill., then was a staff member at Fr. Gibault School for Boys in Terre Haute, Ind., from 1969-71, when he was named principal of the school there for the 1971-72 academic year. From 1972-73 he was director of the C lay Township Neighborhood Center in South B end, Ind., then returned to Fr. Gibault School from 1973-81 and was director there from 1975-81. He then took a sabbatical for social work studies at Barry University in Miami, Fla., and acted as a political consultant in Terre Haute from 1982-83. He worked on the staff of the Family and Children's Center, Mishawaka, Ind., for some months in 1983, then returned to studies at Barry College the remainder of the academic year 1983-84. He went back to Fr. Gibault School as administrative assistant in charge of fiscal affairs from June- April 1985, then returned to the Family and Children's Center as a social worker from 1985-86, as vice president from 1986-89, and supervisor of the Center's Sexual Abuse Treatment Program from 1989-1990. He became a clinical social worker with Psychology Associates in South Bend from 1990-1993, and was co-founder of the Holy Cross C ounseling Group, South Bend, and was a clinical social worker there from 1993 until his retirement two years ago. He remained as a clinical consultant with the center up to the time of his death. Brother Thomas was recognized in northern Indiana as the top expert in the field of sexual abuse counseling. His reputation, however, was nationally acknowledged. He belonged to counseling organizations such as the A.T.S.A., A.P.S.A.C. and M.R.N.I.S.O., and was on the board of Casie Center and Ducomb Center. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, in St. Joseph's Chapel, the brothers' Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, 54515 State Road 933. A Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 2:30 p.m., with burial immediately afterward at St. Joseph's Cemetery on the village grounds. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Thomas House-Ferguson
Jan. 2, 1933 - Nov. 2, 2001
Mr. Thomas House-Ferguson, 67, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of South Bend, Ind., perished in his residence on Friday, Nov. 2, 2001. He was born in Trenton, Tenn., on Jan. 2, 1933, to Bertha Mae House and Herman Fer-guson, who preceded him in death along with a special aunt, Hattie Ferguson. As a lifelong resident, he was loved by many family members and friends. He was also a veteran of the United States Army and a member of the Elks Lodge. Thomas was a former A.M. General employee, retiring after 25 years of service. He has left to cherish his memory his wife, Patricia Ann Ferguson; his mother-in-law, Mary Salone of Chicago Heights, Ill.; a brother and sister-in-law, Lee and Berleen Austin of Indianapolis, Ind.; 11 daughters, Sondra Smalling, Deborah (Elvis) Ferguson-Winstead, Shirley Ferguson, Sherry Ferguson and Cassandra Ferguson, all of Evansville, Ind., Stephanie Woods, Joyce (Grady) Gary, Tamela Ferguson and Zikea Ferguson, all of South Bend, and Lisa and Kisha Herbert of Memphis; seven sons, Michael Levels of Anderson, Ind., Thomas Ferguson Jr. and Trent Ferguson of Evansville, Anthony Ferguson of South B end, Steven and Patrick Herbert of Chicago Heights, and Stanley Herbert of Memphis; along with 38 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Ferguson of Detroit, Mich.; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mr. Ferguson will be held at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 9, in Alford's Mortuary. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the services in Alford's Mortuary where arrangements have been entrusted.

Jasmine Lynn Jackson, 4 days old, was gently taken into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Memorial Hospital. Jasmine was born to her parents, Jeffery Allen and Mary Beth Jackson of North Elmer Street, South Bend, Ind., on Friday, Nov. 2. Surviving along with her parents are three sisters, Melody Maxwell and Cynthia Maxwell, both of South Bend, and Roochelle James of Niles, Mich.; an aunt, Ella Maxwell, and two cousins, Donald Ward and Ericka Maxwell, all of Niles. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Ethel Maxwell and Josh Ward; and by her paternal grandmother, Mary Jackson. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, in Alford's Mortuary where arrangements have been entrusted.

Tommie Lawrence
Sept. 21, 1935 - Nov. 1, 2001
The life of Apostle Tommie Lawrence began Sept. 21, 1935, in St. Louis, Mo. He was the third son born to Ella Mae and Joe Lawrence. His father, Joe Lawrence, and his brother, Eddie "Buddy" Lawrence, preceded him in death. He grew up in the city of East St. Louis, Ill., and Chicago, Ill. His primary education was from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., UCLA in Los Angeles, Calif., and St. Stephen's School of Theology in Los Angeles where he received his doctorate in religion, philosophy and psychology. He served in the United States Air Force from 1954 and received an honorable discharge in 1963. He married Charlesetta, his childhood sweetheart, and to this union were added three beautiful children, Christ'l, Charise and Terrell. His preparation for ministry began at Holy Ghost Tabernacle (later named Haynes Miracle Temple) under the pastorate of the late Elder John M. and Mother Goldia Haynes. He later moved to Peoria, attended the Peoria Revival Center, and served as associate pastor with The Rev. Douglas Keller. He was licensed and ordained a bishop at the age of 28. The inception of God's House of Prayer for all Nations Full G ospel, Non-Denominational Church began to breathe and grow at 1825 N. Gale in Peoria in the home of Pastor and Mrs. Tommie Lawrence. In 1971, God's House of Prayer moved to Los Angeles, with over 100 members. In 1992, Apostle Lawrence moved to South Bend, Ind., and established a second God's House of Prayer church (the headquarters). Under his direct leadership, churches across the U.S. and internationally became part of the GHOP umbrella. Apostle Lawrence made unique contributions in shaping the lives of people, and received many awards and honors for the community work. He was founder, publisher and executive of two newspapers: The Illini Review, a local paper in Peoria that voiced the social and political concerns of the community ; and The National Christian Youth Critique, Los Angeles , a Christian newspaper that served to meet the needs of youth and young adults throughout the United States. In 1967 he founded the All Nations Youth and Young Adults of America (ANYYA), an organization that promoted and fostered the dignity of others, promoting harmony and understanding, providing opportunity for young people to place their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, to embrace the laws of the land, to cement races, and to grow into adulthood as confident and productive members of our society. His memory will be cherished by his beloved and faithful wife, Charlesetta G. Lawrence; two daughters, Christ'l Lawrence of Madison, Ill., Charise (Kirk) Gregory of Granger, Ind.; his son, Terrell (Margaret) Lawrence of Los Angeles; his mother, Ella Mae Hearse of East St. Louis; one brother, Jesse (Richideen) Lawrence of East St. Louis; one sister, Irma (Eddie) Golliday of Belleville, Ill.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services for Apostle Lawrence will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, in God's House of Prayer for all Nations, with Apostle Richard D. Henton officiating. Memorial services will be held from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, in the church. Alford's Mortuary has been entrusted with arrangements.

Mary A. Pittman

Mary A. Pittman, 96, formerly of Stanley Avenue, Mishawaka, Ind., passed away at 4:55 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, in the Hospice House, South Bend, Ind. Mary was born Nov. 25, 1904, in Fulton County, Ind., to the late Nora (Gregson) and John Myers. On the 26th of June 1926, as Mary A. Myers, she married Glenn Pittman in Mishawaka. Glenn passed away May 20, 1972. Mary was also preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Myers. Mary is survived by two daughters, D onna Baker of Osceola, Ind., and Ruth Foster of Elkhart, Ind.; two half brothers, Harold (Kathryn) Myers of Osceola and Herbert Myers of Niles, Mich.; one stepbrother, Emery (Dorothy) Bowman of Florida. Mary has six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. Mary was a very loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Spurrier of Waterford, Mich.; October 26, 2001; age 79; dear wife of the late Walter Spurrier; loving mother of M ark Spurrier of South Bend, Ind., and Barbara (Reverend Timothy) Patch of Lake Orion, Mich.; dear sister of Frances (Donald) Buck and the late Alice Stewart; beloved grandmother of Sean Michael, Steven Mark, Michele Rene', Karen Lynn, Kathryn Elizabeth and Krista Diane, and great-grandchild, Savannah Noel. Mrs. Spurrier retired as a supervisor from the Michigan Bell Telephone Company and was a member of the First Missionary Church of Clarkston, Mich. She was also a member of the Waterford Senior Center. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, in the First Missionary Church, 4832 Clintonville Road, Clarkston. Sister Miriam A. Teders

Sister Miriam Augusta (Teresa Margaret Teders) C.S.C., 98, was born in Kendallville, Noble County, Ind., to August Joseph and Agnes Cecilia Meyers Teders. She attended public school in Kendallville and worked as secretary to the superintendent of schools after a short course of study at the Indiana State Normal School, Muncie, Ind. Sister entered the C ongregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross February 1930, made her first profession August 1932, and final profession August 1935. She trained as a teacher and taught in elementary schools in Indiana, St. Patrick's, East Chicago, St. Mary's, Union City, Saint Mary's, Michigan City, and Saint Mary's, Anderson, St. Vincent de Paul, Logansport, principal and teacher at St. Patrick's, and teacher at St. Joseph's, South B end, and Queen of All Saints, Michigan City. She received her master of arts degree in education from Notre Dame University, Notre Dame, Ind. In Illinois she taught at Holy Redeemer, Evergreen Park, and did library/office work; she was principal and teacher at St. Theodore, Chicago, Ill. Sister did parish visiting in the South Bend area until she retired to Saint Mary's campus. She was active in community service to the sisters and to the Ministry of Prayer until her death. Lyle Z. Weldy
July 5, 1917 - Nov. 7, 2001
Lyle Z. Weldy, 84, a lifelong resident of Madison Township, was welcomed home by his Savior and Friend, Jesus, on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001. Lyle was born on the family farm in Madison Township on July 5, 1917, to L. Ernest and Myrtle V. Strope Weldy. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Ireta Weldy; a brother, Warren T. Weldy; and by his grandson, David Lee Weldy. On Aug. 7, 1942, he married Wilma Evelyn Brechtel in Bremen, Ind. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Douglas (Sun) Weldy of Osceola, Ind., Roger (Glenda) Weldy of Decatur, Ill., and Bruce (Jody) Weldy of Elkhart, Ind.; two daughters, Mrs. Billy (Eva) Baugham of Taylors, S.C., and Mrs. Mark (Elaine) Truex of Wakarusa, Ind.; and by 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Mr. Weldy enjoyed farming for over 60 years. His farm has been in his family for over 150 years. In addition to farming, Mr. Weldy served as an independent insurance agent and later on the board of directors for Farmers Mutual Aide Association and Hoosier Insurance. Mr. Weldy enjoyed driving school bus for over 26 years for Madison Township School and the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation. He was a member of Bible Baptist C hurch where he served on the trustee board. Mr. Weldy lived a long and happy life surrounded by a family who loved and treasured him. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today in the Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Wakarusa Chapel, and for one hour prior to the funeral services in the Bible Baptist Church at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10. Wilma L. Wotring

Wilma Louise Patridge Wotring, 81, was born on July 1, 1920, in Rochester, Ind. She went to be with the Lord on Friday, Nov. 2, 2001. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred Patridge; grandson, Robert Patridge; and by her son, Richard Patridge. She is survived by her daughter, Lois Zentz of T hree Rivers, Mich.; son, Jerome Patridge of Spring, Texas; husband, Jack Wotring of Tucson, Ariz.; and by 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at Fairview Cemetery, at the corner of Main and Jefferson in Mishawaka, Ind.

Rev. Samuel D. Brookshire
July 16, 1942 - July 29, 2001
Rev. Samuel D. Brookshire, 59, of Valley Forge Lane, Granger, Ind., died following an illness at 2:02 a.m. Sun-day, July 29, in Memorial Hos-pital, South Bend, Ind. Rev. Brookshire was born July 16, 1942, in St. Louis, Mo., to Dennis M. and F. Elmit-ta (Delaschmit) Brookshire, and had lived in the Michiana area since 1985, coming from Muncie, Ind. On June 18, 1966, in Webster Grove Methodist Church, Webster Grove, Mo., he married Lynn Suzanne Hill, who preceded him in death Jan. 25, 1986. On Dec. 3, 1988, in First United Methodist Church, South Bend, he married Linda Jamison Bate, who survives. He is also survived by four sons, S. Matthew (Marie) Brookshire of Indianapolis, Ind., Joseph M. Brookshire of Kalamazoo, Mich., D. Wesley (Andrea) Brookshire of Mishawaka, Ind., and Drew (Jessica) Brookshire of South Bend; one granddaughter, Amelia Brookshire; his mother, Elmitta Brookshire of Rolla, Mo.; and by two sisters, Mary Sue (Darrel) Coogan of High Ridge, Mo., and Janette (Dave) Foster of Pacific, Mo. Sam was originally employed by General Motors Corporation at the Guide Plant in Anderson, Ind., before embarking on a second career in the ministry. He served congregations in Perkinsville and Beal's Chapel, Tipton, and Muncie, Ind. When he moved to South Bend he served congregations at First United Methodist, Epworth Memorial United Methodist, and was currently serving at Clay United Methodist. He attended Southwest Missouri State and graduated from Anderson College and Christian Theological Seminary. He also completed a two-year study and remained involved with the Academy of Spiritual Formation. Sam served on the board of directors of Hamilton Communities for Hamilton Grove Retirement Community, and was a member of the Order of St. Luke's. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the elusive game of golf. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, in the Clay United Methodist Church, South Bend, with Dr. Herbert Buwalda and Rev. Daniel Motto, district superintendent, officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today in the Welsheimer Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road. Ralph E. Dunlap
Aug. 10, 1928 - July 30, 2001
Ralph E. Dunlap, 72, of Missions East Drive, Niles, Mich., died following an extended illness at 7:05 a.m. Monday, July 30, in his home. He was born on Aug. 10, 1928, in Dela-ware, Ohio, to Calvin J. and Betty (Black) Dunlap. Mr. Dunlap was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps. He earned a B.A. degree in business administration and economics from Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. In 1964 he moved from Willoughby, Ohio, to 1022 Tomahawk Lane, Niles, then in 1993 to Missions East Drive. Mr. Dunlap was retired from the National-Standard Corporation in 1992 after 14 years of employment, and had been formerly employed for many years by the Clark Equipment Company. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and past president of the board of directors of the Niles-Buchanan YMCA. Mr. Dunlap enjoyed woodworking and golf, and spending summers at their home on Birch Lake, Mich. On June 20 1954, in Massillon, Ohio, he married the former Helen J. Robertson, who survives. He is also survived by their sons, Jeffrey Alan Dunlap of Niles and Bradley R. (Ellen) Dunlap of South Bend, Ind.; four grandchildren, Jennifer and Katie Dunlap of South Bend, and Matthew and Thomas Dunlap of Niles; and by his brother, Joy H. Dunlap of Destin, Fla. Mr. Dunlap was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Ann Harris and Doris Townsley. Funeral services for Ralph E. Dunlap will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, in Wesley United Methodist Church, Niles, with the Reverend Emmett H. Kadwell Jr. of the church officiating. Committal services will follow at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens, Niles. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles. Thomas L. Hoover
Aug. 25, 1947 - July 28, 2001
Thomas L. Hoover, 53, of Greenacre Road, South Bend, Ind., passed away on Saturday, July 28, in a motorcycle/auto accident. He was born in South Bend on Aug. 25, 1947, to R.K. and Phyllis J. Hoover. He grew up in South Bend and graduated from Washington High School in 1965. Tom served in the Army in 1966-1967. He was employed at Capital Technologies, Inc., on Voorde Drive, South Bend. He was preceded in death by his father, R.K. Hoover on Jan. 2, 2001. His is survived by his mother, Phyllis J. Hoover of South Bend; a brother, David (Nancy) Hoover of South Bend; a sister, Karen Rentfrow of Florida; two sons, Nathan and Dane Hoover of South Bend; and by several nieces and nephews. Tom loved motorcycles and music all his life. He was a good father and was very proud of his two sons. His love of life and generosity to others will be greatly missed.

Lloyd A. Morgan
Jan. 15, 1936 - July 30, 2001
Lloyd A. Morgan, 65, of Sugar Pine Drive, Mishawaka, Ind., died at 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 30, in Countryside Place. Mr. Morgan was born on Jan. 15, 1936, in South Bend, Ind., to the late John Hunt and Mary Hazel (Drumright) Morgan. He had lived in this area all of his life. Floyd had formerly worked for Lilly Industries in Elkhart, Ind., as a dispatcher. He was an honorably discharged veteran, having served in the Army. On July 18, 1959, in South Bend, he married the former Pauline E. Gugle, who survives. Along with his wife Pauline of 42 years, Lloyd is survived by two daughters, Michele "Shelly" and her husband, Scott LaPlace of Fremont, Ind., Karen and her husband, Mike Horvath of South Bend; two sisters, Norma and Bill Fread of Carmel, Ind., and Karen and Gary Swank of Redkey, Ind.; a brother, Bob and Millie Morgan of Evansville, Ind.; and by three grandchildren, Tara and Amy LaPlace, and Teresa Horvath. Lloyd will be remembered for being a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He devoted his entire life and all of his energy to his children and grandchildren. His love was evident through his giving of his time. His greatest joy was being able to watch loved ones participate in athletics and the times playing cards with his family. Lloyd will be missed by his family and friends, but his loving spirit will live in us forever. William H. O'Connor
March 7, 1927 - July 30, 2001
William H. O'Connor, 74, of 65600 Sycamore Road, North Liberty, Ind., passed away after an extended illness at 10:30 p.m. Monday, July 30, in his residence. He was born March 7, 1927, in North Liberty, lived here his entire life, and retired from Northern Electric in 1992. Mr. O'Connor was a member of the Lakeside Baptist Church in Lakeville. He married Donna L. Pugsley on Nov. 15, 1945, in North Liberty. She survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Robbie (Dean) Luther of North Liberty; two sons, Mark W. of North Liberty and Kevin (Carol) of Lakeville, Ind.; four sisters, Norma Solmos and Dorothy Arnett, both of North Liberty, Doris Graves of Walkerton, Ind., and Judy Granning of Fort Wayne, Ind.; three brothers, Harold of North Liberty, Lester of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Verland of South Bend, Ind.; and by 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandchild, Chad O'Connor; two brothers, Lawrence "Tom" and Donald; and by a sister, Enid Boudin. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and after 6 p.m. Friday in the A.M. Manuel Funeral Home, North Liberty. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, in the North Liberty Church of Christ, officiated by Tim Stewart and Vito Rulli. Burial will be at the Porter Rae Cemetery, Potato Creek State Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph County 4-H Horse and Pony Club.

Brooks K. Randolph
Dec. 18, 1919 - July 28, 2001
Brooks Knox Randolph, 81, of Marion, Ill., formerly of Griffith, Ind., passed away at 6:58 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, in his home. He was born on Dec. 18, 1919, at Mitchellsville, south of Harrisburg, the son of Daniel Walter and Lula (Welch McGhee) Randolph. Mr. Randolph answered the call of his country during World War II by serving in the United States Navy. He was united in marriage to Catherine Rardin on March 29, 1963, in Chicago, Ill. Together they have enjoyed the last 38 years. His working career was as a boilermaker/welder of Local Union No. 374 of Hammond, Ind., in field construction for 45 years. During that time period he had traveled to different parts of the country working on construction sites, serving in the positions of supervisor of welding, welding foreman and general foreman. He finally retired in March 1983. He remained in Griffith after retirement until he moved back to southern Illinois, in Marion, in 1997. His church membership is with the First United Methodist Church of Griffith. Since moving to Marion he had attended the First United Methodist Church of Marion. His other memberships include the Boilermakers Local Union No. 374 of Hammond, Garfield Masonic Lodge No. 674 of Hammond, The Thirty-Second Consistory of South Bend, Ind., The Orak Shrine of Michigan City, Ind., South Lake County Shrine Club of Crown Point, Ind., and The Williamson County Shrine Club of Marion. He also was an avid NASCAR fan, traveling all over the country to the many different races that were held. He is survived by his wife, Catherine; daughter and son-in-law, Velina and Bill Hartmann of Anna, Ill.; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Dan and Robbie Randolph of Crown Point, Gordon Randolph of Granger, Ind., and Jeff Randolph of Merrillville, Ind.; a stepdaughter and step-son-in-law, Sandy and Terry Lunn of Gilbert, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and by two sisters, Mabel Fulkerson and Melba Fulkerson Lane, both of Harrisburg, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Jasey Randolph; sister, Evelyn Kenippe; and by two brothers, Paul and Ted Randolph. The funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, in the Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 N. Court Street, Marion. Rev. Clifford Heil officiated. Interment followed at Macedonia Cemetery, Mitchellsville. The family received friends and visitors from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday, July 30, in the Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, where Masonic services were conducted at 7 p.m. by the Fellowship Masonic Lodge No. 89 F&AM of Marion.
