Betty L. Graham
Munster / Hessville / Dyer / AZ

Betty L. Graham, age 72, of Munster, formerly of Hessville, Dyer, Phoenix, AZ and Glendale, AZ, passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at the Munster Med-Inn. Mrs. Graham was born on December 2, 1929 in Buckeye, TN, the daughter of the late Leonard and the late Ruth Harris. Mrs. Graham is survived by two sons, William E. Jr. (Debra) Graham of St. John, David Scott (Pamela) Graham of Phoenix, AZ; two daughters, Elaine (Dennis) Aker of Hammond and Kathy (Terry) Shadley of Portage; two brothers, Charles (Pauline) Harris of Beverly Hills, FL and Carl (Donna) Harris of Longmont, CO; two sisters, Lucy (Glen) Cox of Phoenix, AZ and Marilyn (Charles) Clark of Winchester, TN; ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Mrs. Graham was preceded in death by one son, Jeffery Alan, a brother, Donald Harris and her very special friend, Don.

Friends may call on Sunday, November 3, 2002 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Burns-Kish Funeral Home, 8415 Calumet Ave., Munster, IN. A memorial service will take place Sunday at 7:00 p.m. Mr. Kenneth Svehla, Pastor of the Church of God, Downers Grove, will officiate.

Mrs. Graham was employed by Saint Margaret Mercy Hospital, Dyer, The Methodist Hospital Southlake Campus, Merrillville, K-Mart, 35th Ave. and Greenway, Phoenix, AZ, as well as Frye's Supermarket, Phoenix, AZ.

JoAn Hendricks
Lake Station

JoAn Hendricks, age 70, of Lake Station, IN, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2002. She is survived by five children: James L. Hendricks of Indianapolis, Diana (John) Baldner of Merrillville, Debbie (Jeff) Leathers of Indianapolis, Dora (Jeff) Stigall of Florida and Delana (James) Markos of Lake Station; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, George Loveless of Nevada. Preceded in death by husband Stewart, in 1997.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 5, 2002 at 11:30 a.m. from the Kuiper Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Sean Doyle officiating. Burial, Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville. Friends may meet with the family on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Road (two blocks south of Ridge Road), Highland.

Mrs. Hendricks was active in the Pentecostal Church.

Louis J. Holubiak
Hammond / Lansing / Roseland

Louis J. Holubiak, age 82, of Hammond, IN, formerly of Lansing and Roseland IL passed away on Friday, November 1, 2002. Beloved Father to Michael (Bethann). Loving Grandfather to Aaron (Heidi), Amanda, Andrew and Adam. Devoted Brother to Mary Blazenak. Numerous Nieces and Nephews.

Funeral services Monday, November 4, 2002, at 11:15 A.M. at Rosemoor Funeral Home, 17943 S. Torrence Ave., Lansing, IL, to St. Ann Church in Lansing, Mass at 12:00 Noon. Interment, St. John Cemetery. Visitation on Sunday 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. 708-474-2404.

Joy B. Dicus
Joy B. Dicus, 85, English, died at 8:05 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Mitchell Manor, where he resided.

A native of Marengo, born Aug. 31, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Sherman J. and Ruby Weathers McIntosh.

She was a beautician for several years in English and attended Marengo Christian Church in Marengo. She was a member of English VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Marengo Order of Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Dicus.

Survivors include a son, David Dicus of English; and a sister, Doris Hoge of Tallahassee, Fla.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Oct. 11, at Denbo Funeral Home in English one hour prior to the service.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. (slow time) at the funeral home with burial in Denbo Cemetery. The Rev. Don Cline will officiate.

Mary C. Attwood
A Corydon woman was killed in a single-car crash Saturday night, Oct. 6, when the vehicle she was in ran off the road and struck a tree.

Mary C. (Chrissy) Attwood, 41, was a passenger in a west-bound car driven by Timothy A. Czymbor, 38, also Corydon, said Capt. Lee Hancock of the Harrison County Sheriff's Dept.

Police said Czymbor was traveling on S.R. 62 "at a very high rate of speed when it went out of control" about 8:30 p.m. near Walnut Valley Road.

Czymbor's Chevy Lumina "left the roadway to the south and struck a large tree on the passenger's side doors," Hancock said.

Harrison County Coroner Martin Wiseman said Attwood died at the scene of multiple injuries.

Czymbor, who was not wearing a seat belt, was unconscious at the scene. Police said he had head injuries and was taken by STATCare air ambulance to University of Louisville Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Alcoholic beverages were found in the car, Hancock said.

The crash is still under investigation, and police are reconstructing what happened.

A native of Salem, Attwood was born April 6, 1959. She was employed by Daramic Inc. in Corydon and a member of Trinity Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Karisha L. Attwood at home; her mother and stepfather, Glenna and Ralph McCartin; two brothers, James Tarr of Paoli and Daniel Tarr of Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Ruth Goldsmith of Palmyra and Sarah Fulk of Cold Springs, Fla.

The funeral is Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m. at Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home in Corydon with burial in the Graceland Memorial Park in New Albany. The Rev. Neal Kentch will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Troy St. Clair, Dan Tarr, James Tarr, Shane Gresham, Bud Burson and Brandon Miller.

Dorothea Beckmann (nee Schmelter)
Merrillville

Dorothea Beckmann (nee Schmelter), age 93, of Merrillville, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2002, at her home. Survived by four daughters: Madelyne (late Robert) Stalbaum of San Pierre, IN, Jo Anne Beckmann of Washington, IL, Marjorie (Gerald) Doty of Crown Point, IN and Lorraine (John) Uzubell of Munster, IN; one son, Donald (Ursula) Beckmann of Syracuse, IN; son-in-law, Laurence Saberniak of Crown Point; 19 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; sisters Marie (Anthony) Carmoli of Latham, N.Y. and Lucille (Francis) Bieker of Crown Point; brother, Raymond (Mildred) Schmelter of Crown Point. Preceded in death by her husband Leo, daughter, Dorothy Saberniak and two brothers, Carl and Robert Schmelter.

Funeral services will be held Monday, November 4, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at the Geisen Funeral Home, and 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Crown Point, Msgr. Don Grass officiating. Burial, Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, IN. Friends may call at the Geisen Funeral Home, 109 Northeast St. Crown Point, IN on Sunday November 3rd, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Mrs. Beckmann was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and Church Choir. She operated, along with her husband, the family grocery store in both Cedar Lake and DeMotte. She was active in the Business and Professional Women's Association in DeMotte. Memorials may be given to St. Mary Catholic Church.

John Butler Sr.
John T. Butler Sr., 76, of Martinsville, died from natural causes at 10:15 a.m. Jan. 13, 2001, at the Todd Aikens Health Care Center in Franklin.

He had lived most of his life in Indianapolis, moving to Martinsville 23 years ago.

Born July 3, 1924, in Tompkinsville, Ky., he was the son of John T. and Havannah (Bowman) Butler, both deceased. He married Carmel Lee Davis April 8, 1972. She survives.

He was a machinist for International Harvester in Indianapolis for 37 years. He retired in 1984. He attended New Life Baptist Church in Brooklyn.

During World War II he served as a private in the U.S. Army and was discharged in 1943.

Other survivors include a daughter, Sharline L. Mayo of Mooresville; a son, John T. Butler Jr. of Indianapolis; four stepsons, Laroy Rush and Rodger Rush, both of Indianapolis, Tony Rush of Florida and Charles Rush of Tennessee; a stepdaughter, Sue Dague of Bedford; five brothers, George Eagle Butler of Bargersville, Joe Fred and IkaC Butler, both of Kentucky, Ted Butler of Indianapolis and Jack Butler of Florida; three sisters, Dixie Bell Carter of Kentucky, Odell Frances of Indianapolis and Nancy Turner, of Franklin; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Three stepdaughters, Brenda Watson, Sandy Rush and Mary Frances Rush; a grandson, Timothy Jackson; and a sister, Trixie LaMonet, preceded him in death.

The service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at New Life Baptist Church in Brooklyn. Mark Wooley will officiate. Burial will be in Mooresville Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 o'clock today at Jones Family Mortuary in Mooresville and 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the New Life Baptist Church in Brooklyn.
