MARYJANE WAFFLE Maryjane Waffle, 79, of 1521-2 Kentfield Way, died at 5:30 a.m. Friday (April 12, 2002) at Goshen General Hospital after becoming ill at home earlier that morning. SACKETT June 8, 1922-April 29, 2004 ELKHART -- Friends and family of Mildred L. Sackett may call for two hours prior to the 2 p.m. Monday service at St. John's Episcopal Church, 226 W. Lexington Ave., Elkhart. The Rev. Henry Randolph will preside, and cremains will be buried in Violett Cemetery of Goshen. Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home of Elkhart handled the arrangements. Mildred L. Sackett, 81, of 2818 E. Jackson Blvd., died at 7:09 a.m. Thursday (April 29, 2004) in her home. She was born June 8, 1922, in Goshen, the daughter of Hugh P. and Anna R. (Violette) Castetter. She married Hinman "Tip" Sackett on Nov. 11, 1944, in Lubbock, Texas; he died on July 17, 2001. Survivors include two daughters, Margery E. (Jack) Paulen and Dr. Leslie A. Sackett, both of Elkhart; a son, Mark H. (Michele) Sackett of Basalt, Colo.; and four grandchildren. A 1940 graduate of Elkhart High School, Mrs. Sackett obtained degrees from Stephens College and University of Chicago. She was secretary-treasurer of Elkhart Electric Supply until her retirement in 1984. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church's Altar Guild, Elcona Country Club, Tri Kappa, and Humane Society of Elkhart County board for more than 30 years. As an Elkhart School Board member, she was instrumental in starting the PEP program. She volunteered for ADEC, Meals on Wheels and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. PEFFLEY Aug. 31, 1930-April 30, 2004 ELKHART -- Josephine Ann Peffley, 73, of 1418 Dotson St., died of cancer at 6:03 a.m. Friday (April 30, 2004) in Eastlake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Aug. 31, 1930, in Sturgis Mich., to Albert L. and Eva M. (Wogoman) Baze. On Oct. 5, 1968, she married Larry E. Peffley in Elkhart. He survives along with her caregiver and niece, Stacy (Kevin) Kelly of Elkhart, and a sister, Katherine Baze of Michigan. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Baze and Floyd Baze. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday and for one hour prior to the 11 a.m. Monday funeral at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. He married Phyllis Ann Thornburg on Sept. 9, 1943. "Shorty" Surowiec, 44, of 1602 L St. and formerly of Elkhart, died at 10:50 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 10, 2004) at LaPorte Hospital after an extended illness. He was born Nov. 4, 1959, in South Bend to Robert and Phyllis (Duncan) Surowiec. Mr. Surowiec is survived by his parents of Elkhart; a brother, Rodney (Ovet) of LaPorte; two sisters, Mrs. James (Debra) Pratt of Elkhart and Kathy Mize of Mishawaka; and a grandmother, Marie Surowiec. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ward and Sybil Duncan; and a grandfather, Stanley Surowiec. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Cutler Funeral Home.
