Freida Marie Powers, 66, Greensburg

Freida Marie Powers, 66, Greensburg, died at 7 a.m. Monday, March 29, 2004 at her residence.

born Sept. 24, 1937, in Manchester, she was the daughter of Clarence Leroy and Norma Marie (Schott) Dell. She married Lester Wayne Powers in Letts on Nov. 27, 1965. He preceded her in death in 1992.

Raised in Manchester, she resided in the Letts community since 1967.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas Wayne Powers and Wilbur Hauser III, both of Greensburg; a daughter, Victoria L. Hays of Greensburg; a brother, Robert Dell of Morris Hill; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Dell and a sister, Shirley Fields.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport. Funeral service is at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home with Rev. Chester Atchley officiating. Burial will follow in Rodney Baptist Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Letts Community Volunteer Fire Department.

Robert M. Biddinger, 80, Westport

Robert M. Biddinger, 80, Westport, died at 5:16 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2004 at his residence.

born Oct. 20, 1923 in Waynesburg, he was the son of Elmer Dale and Mary Ellen (Brotherton) Biddinger. He married Harriet Hamilton on March 13, 1947 in North Vernon and she survives.

A lifelong resident of the Westport community, he retired in 1988 from Arvin Industries at Columbus. He also worked at the Bewley Bakery in Westport and was a veteran serving the Army during WWII in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Richard D. Biddinger of North Vernon and Kenneth W. Biddinger of Westport; two daughters, Janet Faye Yeager of Butlerville and Sandy Biddinger of Greensburg; two sisters, Delores Fields of Columbus and Dorothy Manlief of Morristown; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharolyn Irene Biddinger; two sisters, Mildred Allen and Ellen Smith and three brothers, George, Clancey and Walter Biddinger.

Funeral service is at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with Rev. David A. Scaggs officiating. Burial will follow in Rockcreek Cemetery with military graveside services. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Luella M. (Craig) Cherry, 76, Winter Haven, FL

Luella M. (Craig) Cherry, 76, Winter Haven, FL (formerly of Greensburg) died at 6:35 a.m. on Friday, March 26, 2004 at Auburndale Oaks Nursing Home in FL.

born May 24, 1927 in Greensburg, she was the daughter of Harry Otis Craig and Gloie Davis. She married William A. Cherry on Aug. 1, 1948 and he survives.

A legal secretary for the late Herbert Kohler, she was an operator at Greensburg Public Telephone, a secretary at Camp Atterbury at the end of WWII, a member of the First Baptist Church of Greensburg and a 1945 graduate of Greensburg High School.

Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, Tom (Becky) Cherry and David (Colleen) Cherry, both of Greensburg and Dick (Donna) Cherry of Smyrna, Tenn. and six grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Sue Cherry and two sisters, Marguerite Craig and Florine VanArsdale.

Funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg with Rev. Michael Cunnington officiating. Burial will follow in South Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Sr. Mirella Heile, O.S.F., 96, Oldenburg

Sr. Mirella Heile, O.S.F., 96, Oldenburg, died Saturday, March 27, 2004 at the Srs. of St. Francis Convent in Oldenburg.

born Jan. 11, 1908 in Covington, KY, she was the daughter of August A. Heile and Elizabeth (Frilling) Heile.

A teacher and principal, she taught at St. Bonaventure, St. Joseph and Our Lady of Cincinnati, St. Clement in St. Bernard, Our Lady of Mercy in Dayton, St. James in White Oak and St. Ann in Hamilton, all in Ohio; Holy Family in Oldenburg, Little Flower, Our Lady of Lourdes, and St. Lawrence in Indianapolis, St. Mary in New Albany, St. Gabriel in Connersville, St. Mary’s in Greensburg, St. Andrew in Richmond, St. Joseph in Princeton and St. Anthony in Evansville, all in Indiana; and Holy Trinity in St. Louis, Missouri. She entered the convent on April 5, 1926, made her final vows on Dec. 30, 1931 and retired to the Motherhouse in 1981.

She is survived by a niece, Jeannete Crawford of Covington, KY and seven close friends, Pat, Jim, Joe and John Dean, Sue Clayton, Mary Knoll and Ann Liles.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha Crawford and Genevieve Heile and two brothers, Theodore Heile and Earl (Bud) Heile.

Funeral service is at 3 p.m. Monday at Srs. of St. Francis Convent Motherhouse Chapel in Oldenburg with Rev. Humbert Moster, O.F.M. officiating. Burial will follow in St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. Monday at the Motherhouse.

Orvel L. Ruble, 73

Orvel L. Ruble, 73, Greensburg, died on Friday, March 26, 2004.

born Sept 16, 1930, in Decatur County, he was the daughter of Benjamin Harrison Ruble and Myrtle Dell Hankins Ruble. On July 12, 1952, he was married to Barbara Schoettmer Ruble, who died on Oct. 23, 2003.

Ruble retired from James River Corp. in Greensburg and was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the army as a sergeant.

He is survived by two sons, Roger D. Jones, Indianapolis and Michael Ruble, Greensburg; two daughters, Rose A. Mozingo and Susan Meadows, both of Greensburg; 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death two grandchildren, one great granddaughter, three brothers, John Ruble, Leland Ruble, Delbert Ruble; four sisters, Mary Ruth Underhill, Elizabeth Smith, Unis Rose Ruble, Gladys Underhill.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home. Funeral service is at 10 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Michael Miller officiating. Burial will follow in South Park Cemetery in Greensburg. Memorials may be made to Ripley County Hospice or Rodney Wesleyan Church.

Robert M. Biddinger, 80, Westport, died at 5:16 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2004 at his residence. Funeral services are pending at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport.

Mary Jane Brewer, 66, Greensburg

Mary Jane Brewer, 66, Greensburg, died at 5:50 a.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at her residence.

born Oct. 21, 1937 in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Vestal (Buck) Mathews and Olive E. (Reed) Mathews. She married James “Jim” Brewer and he survives.

A secretary for the Social Security Administration in Disability, she worked for the State of Indiana and was also a member of the Cross Plains Methodist Church.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Terry Brewer of Greensburg and Andrew (Jennifer) Brewer of Indianapolis; three sisters, Vesta Ricke of Greensburg, Pam Gladson of Indianapolis and Susan Brewer of Greensburg and eleven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral service is at 10 a.m. Monday at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg. Burial will follow in South Park Cemetery in Greensburg. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Decatur County.

Elizabeth Mae “Betsy” Kuntz, infant, Batesville

Elizabeth Mae “Betsy” Kuntz, infant, Batesville, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at St. Vincent Hospital’s Family Life Center in Indianapolis. Funeral service is at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Louis Church in Batesville. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Weigel Funeral Home in Batesville is in charge of funeral arrangements. Memorials may be made to the St. Vincent Hospital’s Newborn ICU.

Linda Martin Brown McCullough, 44, Greensburg

Linda Martin Brown McCullough, 44, Greensburg, died Thursday, March 25, 2004 at her residence in Greensburg.

born Oct. 12, 1959 in South Bend, she was the daughter of Henry August Martin and Marjorie Rogers Martin of Crumstown. She married David J. McCullough on Sept. 2, 1955 and he survives.

An employee of S.T.I., Inc., she was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greensburg, a 1979 graduate of Washington High School in South Bend, a member of the Daughters of Isabella, a leader of Pro Life at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Decatur County Right to Life and was assisting with the Teen for Life organization.

Besides her parents and husband, she is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth and Rebecca Brown of Greensburg; two step sons, John McCullough of Lebanon and Kevin McCullough of Greensburg; two brothers, Dr. Hank (Sue) Martin of Greensburg and Joseph (Diane) Martin of Lafayette, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg, where a Rosary service will take place at 5:30 p.m. Funeral service is at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greensburg with Msgr. Harold Knueven officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Greensburg.

Memorials may be made to Pro Life of St. Mary’s Church.
