James R. Helms, 81, Westport

James R. Helms, 81, Westport, died on Saturday, July 31, 2004 at 2:15 a.m. at the Hospice Center of South Central Indiana at Columbus.

Born April 23, 1923 in New Castle, he was the son of Tracey Ray and Blanche Ada (Rodgers) Helms. He married Mary Grace Koger on July 26, 1947 in Columbus. She survives.

Born in New Castle and raised in Spiceland, he has been a Decatur County resident since 1959. He retired in 1985 from Reliant Electric as a Tool & Die Maker. He was also a farmer and a member of the American Legion Post # 129 at Greensburg. He graduated from Spiceland High School in 1942 and was a Veteran having served with the Army Air Force during World War II.

Besides his wife, he is survived by five sons, David Scott Helms, Daniel James Helms, Dennis Lee Helms, Dale Edward Helms and Jace Robert Helms, all of West-port; a daughter, Jami Lea Helms of Westport; two brothers, Tracey Edward Helms of Eau Gallie, Florida and William D. Helms of Palatka, Florida; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Roger Grant Helms and two brothers, Charles Helms and Donald Helms.

Private Graveside Services will be conducted at Indiana Veteran Cemetery at Madison with Military Graveside Rites. There will be no public visitation. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home at Westport.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of South Central Indiana through the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home.

Larry (Shag) Pickett, Sr., 61, Flat Rock

Larry (Shag) Pickett, Sr., 61, Flat Rock (near Osgood) did on Saturday, July 31, 2004 at Decatur County Memorial Hospital in Greensburg.

Born Oct. 22, 1942 near Osgood, he was the son of Robert and Zelma Baldwin Pickett. He was married to Carmen Jackson on March 13, 1987 and she survives.

A 1960 graduate of Napoleon High School and a ember of the Union Flat Rock Baptist Church, he was a 37-year employee of Cummins Engine, retiring in 1999. He was also a member of the ABATE of Indiana, Sons of the American Legion at Osgood, Amvets of Osgood and was currently serving on the board of directors of the Holton Community Water Corporation.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Larry Pickett, Jr. and Dennis Bush-horn, Jr., both of Osgood; four daughters, Lori Voegele (fiancé Roger Eckstein) of Enochsburg, Joy Pickett-Zapfe of Osgood; Heidi Lovins (Steve) of Aurora and Maggie Pickett at home; a mother-in-law, Carolyn Schmidt of Guilford and father-in-law John Jackson of Lake City, Tennessee; three sisters, Eileen Levell of Daleville, Maxine Young (Alvin) of Osgood and Evelyn Hull (Milton) of Columbus; a sister-in-law, Clara Hull of Greensburg; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Elvan.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.

Funeral service is at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Union Flat Rock Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Rescue 69 or the church.

Mary E. Hooten, 82, Indianapolis

Mary E. Hooten, 82, Indianapolis (formerly of Greensburg), died at 6:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 29, 2004 at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove.

Born Oct. 3, 1921 in Greensburg, Mary was the daughter of John Hooten and Maggie Mae (Tatman) Hooten.

Owner and operator of Indianapolis Manufacturing Company, she was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Indianapolis and was a graduate of Broad Ripple High School in Indianapolis.

She is survived by a son, Michael (Francine) Hooten of Indianapolis; a grandson, Michael L. Hooten of Indianapolis; a granddaughter, Latoya (Hooten) Parson of Indianapolis; a sister, Geneva Humphrey of Indianapolis; brothers, John D. Hooten of Batesville and Glenn W. Hooten of Greensburg and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Susie Patterson, Helen Tetrick and Lena Porter and a brother, Herschel Hooten.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the 11:30 a.m. funeral service Monday at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg, with Pastor William Thompson III officiating. Burial is in South Park Cemetery in Greensburg.

Robert J. Tempest, 83, North Vernon

Robert J. Tempest, 83, North Vernon, died on Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at his residence. Funeral service is at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Burcham officiating. Burial will follow in Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Pickett Funeral Home in North Vernon and from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday.

Eugene Fields, 78, Milan

Eugene Fields, 78, Milan, died Monday, July 26, 2004 at Manderly Health Care Center in Osgood.

Born Nov. 13, 1925 in Cincinnati, he was the son of Joseph and Norma (Wolf) Fields. He married Judy I. Bland Fields on March 29, 1952. She preceded him in death.

He was retired from Schenley Distillers in Lawrenceburg and was a member of the Milan American Legion Post No. 235 and the Milan VFW Post No. 6234, F&AM;, Scottish Rite and Shrine.

He is survived by a son, Kurt (Gwen) Fields of Dayton, KY; daughters, Brenda Sue (James) Downey of Butlersville and Julie (Todd) Schwipps of Greensburg; brothers, Doug Fields of Cold Springs, Ky., and Bill Fields of Greensburg; sisters, Hilda Stepleton and Rheadawn Peetz, both of Osgood; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jo Fields, Jr. and a sister, Marcella Adkins.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today at Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home in Milan. Funeral service is at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Rev. Charles McKinley officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, north of Milan. Military rites at the graveside will be provided by Milan Legion and VFW.

Memorials may be made to the Ripley County Cancer Fund.

Rev. Oliney Glenn Oaks, 82, Greensburg

Rev. Oliney Glenn Oaks, 82, Greensburg, died at 8:35 p.m. on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at his residence in Greensburg.

Born Feb. 21, 1922 in Bowen, Ky., he was the son of Troy Oaks and Bertha (Yeary) Oaks. He married Dorothy (Baggerman) Oaks on Sept. 6, 1943. She survives.

An ordained minister, he lived in this area for seven years having previously lived in Kentucky. He had pastored at Star Baptist Church and New Point Baptist Church, both of Decatur County, Hartsville Baptist Church of Bartholomew County and was pastor of Tate’s Creek baptist Church in Richmond, Ky., for 21 years. He retired after 48 years of service in 1997. He graduated from Clark County High School in Richmond, KY in 1941, Southern Illinois Bible College in Carbondale, IL in 1957 and attended Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, KY from 1960-62. He was a member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church of Adams in Decatur County. He was also a veteran of World War II in the Air Force as an airplane mechanic. He received two bronze stars, a World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

Besides his wife, he is survived by daughters Sandra L. Oaks of Greensburg and Peggy (John) Settles of St. Paul; brothers, Frank Oaks and Roy Oaks of Winchester, Ky.; sisters, Opal Smoot of New Lenox, IL and Pauline Witt of Irine, Ky., ; grandchildren, Michelle Settles of Indianapolis; Jeffrey A. (Vickie) Settles of St. Paul and Leigh Ann (Bill) Deshiell of Greensburg and five great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Edna Oaks, Ella Coomer, Illa Schmunk and two brothers, Oral and Albert Oaks.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Glenn E. George Funeral Home in St. Paul and one hour before the 11 a.m. Saturday service at Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Decatur County with Rev. Keith Dover officiating. Burial will follow in Union Chapel Cemetery in Decatur County. Graveside military service will be conducted by the Decatur County Veteran Organizations.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana or Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in care of the funeral home.

David R. Gardner, 49

David R. Gardner, age 49. Born in Greensburg, IN., July 6, 1955. Died July 25, 2004. Donations in David’s name may be made to the American Lung Association for research into Pul-monary Fibrosis. David’s death leaves a large hole in the lives of his family and friends. He was a loving husband to Vickie, a wonderful father to Justin, a caring brother to Jeff and Jill, a devoted son to Dick and Bev, and an extraordinary friend. He will be missed very, very much by everyone who knew him.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. services Wednesday, at 2 p.m. at Legacy Funeral Alternatives at Memorial Park.

Violet Thomas Bare McClain, 92, Versailles

Violet Thomas Bare McClain, 92, Versailles, died Friday, July 23, 2004 at the Manderly Health Care Center in Osgood. Funeral service is at 10 a.m. Thursday at Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Mark Walker of the Versailles Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Mud Pike Cemetery near Osgood. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Mud Pike Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

Luther S. Barrett, 96, Indianapolis

Luther S. Barrett, 96, Indianapolis, died at 9:20 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2004.

Born in Waldron, he was a graduate of Waldron High School in Waldron and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Greensburg and the Democrat Club of Indianapolis. He worked for Allison Division of General Motors as an Inspector and retired in May 1970.

He is survived by a wife, Margaret L. Barrett of Indianapolis; a son, Michael (Peg) Barrett of Fortville; two daughters, Carolyn Schroeder of Greensburg and Marjorie (Dale) Hurst of Hemphill, Texas; seven grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a step great-great-grandchild; a niece, Betty Clayton of Nashville; nephews, Bob Bass of Cincinnati and Stephen (Linda) Bass of East Sandwich, MA and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Quirk of Indianapolis.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, George (Sarah) Russell; a stepson, William Joseph Rath.

A celebration of his life will take place on Thursday at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg. Calling will take place from 9-11 a.m. Thursday followed by the funeral service and graveside service with Rev. Richard Clayton of Nashville officiating.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice or the Masonic Lodge in Greensburg.

Helen N. (Hunteman) Gunter, 81, Osgood

Helen N. (Hunteman) Gunter, 81, Osgood, died at 3:15 p.m. on Monday, July 19, 2004 at Decatur County Memorial Hospital in Greensburg. Funeral service is at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Napoleon with Pastor Gary Groth officiating. Burial will follow in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Napoleon. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. on Wednesday at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg. Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church.
