Dunlap, Lawrence A.
Nov. 11, 1927 - Jan. 22, 2009

MISHAWAKA - Larry Dunlap, 81, passed away on January 22nd after a long, hard fought battle in the St. Joseph Hospital Burn Center, Ft. Wayne, IN. Larry was born in Grand Rapids, MI, to the late Herman P. Dunlap and Bernice (Cote) Dunlap. Along with his parents, his son, Gregg, and brother, Bruce Dunlap, preceded him in death. Larry attended school in Cleveland and Chicago, and from 1945 to 1949 very proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. On January 30, 1954, he married his wife, Rosemary (Jurek). Together they spent many happy years living in Lima, OH, Indianapolis, and 33 years in California before returning here to his wife's roots. He is also survived by a daughter, Lynn (Greg) Supan of Ventura, CA; a son, Dwight (Joyce) of Uxbridge, MA. Also surviving are his beloved grandchildren, Jason of Chicago, Joshua of South Bend, Lindsey of Osceola, Elyssa (Ian) Kennelly and Steve, both of Boston, and Cathy of Putnam, CT. Also a dear daughter - in law, Linda of Osceola, and two sisters, Daryl McCall of Indian Wells, CA, and Jean Bellanger of Granada Hills, CA. Larry was an active member of St. Pius X Catholic Church where he served as Eucharistic minister. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society, Polonaise Club, Golden Cluster and American Legion #357. Larry enjoyed the visits of his children and grandchildren, and was so grateful to have lived long enough to see them mature and happy. He had a special fondness for the Notre Dame/Michigan State football games each year, because the game in 1952 had been his first date with his wife. There will be a memorial Mass in St. Pius X Church at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 28, with a visitation in the church one hour before Mass. Burial will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Vincent de Paul or to the St. Pius X Building Fund.Semper Fi, dear Larry, I'll miss you with all my heart.

Lair, Mary E.
June 3, 1928 - Jan. 19, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Mary Elizabeth Lair, 80, of South Bend, IN, passed away January 19, 2009. Born June 3, 1928, in Union City, PA, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Edna (Brown) Layden. On June 28, 1947, she married Raymond Lair, who preceded her in death along with her son, John Lair, her sister, Frances Tarbell, and a brother, John Layden. Mary was a devoted full - time mother and wife, and a wonderful friend to many. She was a member of Turners, and was actively involved with her church, Little Flower, for over 45 years. Mary touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her four loving children, Debbie (Rick) Zimmerman of Noblesville, IN, Daniel Lair of South Bend, Karen (Roger) Sellers of Bailey, CO, and Nancy (Charles) Stull of Erie, PA; a brother, Joseph Layden of Ohio; three sisters, Rita (Edward) Snyder of Pennsylvania, Joan (Sam) Milicia of Florida and Jane (Bob) Caldarella of North Carolina. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Erika (Chris) Dobrota, Erin Zimmerman, Derik Zimmerman, Tyler and MacKenzie Lair, Jennifer (Joshua) Edwards, Scott Sellers and Amy Huffer; two great - grandchildren, Caroline and Bennett Dobrota; and by many caring nieces and nephews. Friends may call Friday, January 23, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in McGann Hay, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Road near Ironwood. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Little Flower Catholic Church on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or to Little Flower Catholic Church, 54191 N. Ironwood, South Bend, IN 46635.

Thorpe, Alice C.
Jan. 16, 1925 - Jan. 18, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Mrs. Alice Claire (Rouch) Thorpe, 84, of South Bend, passed away Sunday evening in the Cardinal Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after an illness. Alice was born in Rochester, IN, on January 16, 1925, to the late Verd and Florence Lorenzo (Lear) Rouch. On September 10, 1955, in South Bend, she married Herbert Thorpe Jr., who passed away last fall on October 23, 2008. Mrs. Thorpe is survived by her daughter, Vickie S. May of South Bend; a son, Jeff Thorpe of Mishawaka; a granddaughter, Whitney May of Granger; and a brother, Kenneth (Phyllis) Rouch of Palm Harbor, FL. Friends may call from 6 - 8 p.m. Wednesday in McGann Hay Funerals | Cremations | Gatherings, University Chapel, 2313 E Edison Road at Ironwood. Private burial services will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, on Thursday. Before she was married Alice worked in the office at the Associates Corporation of North America, was a waitress at S.S. Kresge & Co., and had also worked at Armour's Cheese Factory. Contributions may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association.

Cohen, Louis John
Sept. 16, 1929 - Jan. 17, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Louis John Cohen, 79, died Saturday, Jan. 17, in Hospice House after a lengthy illness. Louis was born September 16, 1929, in Wilkes - Barre, PA, to Louis and Anna (Flynn) Cohen. He retired as the director of internal auditing for the University of Notre Dame with close to 30 years of service. He was an avid Notre Dame fan and played basketball well into his senior years. On Feb. 23, 1952, Louis married Jean McAndrew in Wilkes - Barre, PA, who survives. Louis is also survived by three sons and two daughters, Martin (Rebecca) of Houston, TX, Thomas (Hetty) of South Bend, Terrance (Ellie) of Bloomington, IN, Ann Marie (Kevin) of Auburn, IN, and Maureen (Don) of South Bend. Also surviving are a nephew, Mark (Roxanne) Cohan; 19 grandchildren, Brigid, Matthew, Brianne and Michael Cohen, Sean, Christopher and Jessica Cohen, Conan, Nick, Casey and Tim Wallace, Brian, Sarah, Erin, Becky, Pat and Eric Newsom, Gina Goetz and Arthur Cafiero; and three great - grandchildren, Noah, Isaac and Isaic. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanne Levine, and a brother, Mark Cohan. Visitation hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the McGann Hay, University Chapel, 2313 Edison Road. A funeral Mass will be held in Christ the King Catholic Church, Darden and SR 933, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24. Burial of ashes will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, IN. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church.

Waxman, MD, Jane Z.
Dec. 5, 1925 - Jan. 18, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Jane Z. Waxman, MD, 83, of Prairie Village, KS, passed away on January 18, 2009. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, January 24, in South - Broadland Presbyterian Church, 7850 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO. Graveside services and burial will be held at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles, MI, at 1 p.m. Friday, January 30, followed by a reception for family and friends at McGann Hay Funerals | Cremations | Gatherings, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23 (enter off Cherry Road). In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions to The Jane Zabel Waxman Fund, Camp Eberhart Alumni Association, 316 S. Eddy Street, South Bend, IN 46617. Dr. Waxman was born in South Bend, Indiana, to Walter and Adah Zabel. She was the valedictorian of her Niles High School class of 1943, Niles, MI. She learned to be an expert sailor, equestrian and riflewoman as a youth at Camp Eberhart, Three Rivers, MI. She attended The University of Michigan where she was Phi Beta Kappa and received a bachelor in science in 1946 and a doctor of medicine in 1949. Her postgraduate training was at Syracuse University Medical School, Syracuse, NY, where she met her husband of 57 years, David Waxman, MD. She later moved with her family to Kansas City, MO, where she began a private practice in pediatrics. She was the first woman president of the Kansas City Pediatric Society, from 1982 - 84. After 25 years in private practice, Dr Waxman moved to an outpatient pediatric practice with the military, first at Richards Gebaur AFB in Grandview, MO, then later at Munson Army Hospital in Leavenworth, KS. She received the Commander's Award for Civilian Service and the Department of the Army Meritorious Civilian Award. She retired from medical practice in 1993. Dr. Waxman was preceded in death by her husband David in 2007, and by her brother, Robert Zabel, in 1999. She is survived by her daughter, Gail Prestigiacomo and husband, Michael of Killeen, TX; son, Michael Waxman, MD, and wife, Nancy of Leawood, KS; son, Dan Waxman, MD, and wife, Sharon of Indianapolis, IN; daughter, Annie Lopez, JD, and husband, Alberto of Glencoe, IL; son, Steve Waxman, MD, and wife, Betsy of Iowa City, IA; and daughter, Abby Moore, CPA, and husband, Ronnie of Overbrook, KS; grandchildren, John, Jennifer, Sarah and husband, Michael Kline, Jacob, Rachel, Max, Sam, Isaac, Mary Jane, David, Walter, William, Chelsea and Jessica.

Silver, Marilyn Hope
June 20, 1946 - Jan. 17, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Marilyn Hope Silver, 62, of South Bend, passed away Saturday, January 17, 2009, after fighting a prolonged illness. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and friend to many. Marilyn was proud of the fact that she was a true South Bend native. She was born on June 20, 1946, to the late Annette Frank and Arthur B. Demby at Memorial Hospital. She attended Lincoln school, achieved confirmation at Temple Beth - El, and later graduated from Riley High School in 1964. Marilyn pursued her education at Indiana University South Bend and Bloomington and received her bachelor's degree in business administration in 1968. After her graduation from college she went on to work in her family's business, Modern Warehouse, overseeing the office and administrative functions of providing freezer (cold) and dry storage. Marilyn was a very industrious and giving person and continued to help expand the family's business and even helped to start other business opportunities including opening an Edie Adams' Cut - N - Curl beauty salon on Western Avenue in South Bend in 1968. She continued to actively manage Demby Enterprises, LLC, from its inception in 2000 until her passing. Marilyn married the love of her life on September 13, 1970. She and Robert "Bob" Joseph Silver spent a bit more than 38 wonderful years together. After getting married, she helped Bob start Robert's Vending Service, Inc., a full line vending service company. They ran the family business side - by - side until they retired and sold it in 1998. The next two loves of her life came on February 2, 1978, and September 7, 1979, with the birth of her two sons, Joshua A. and Benjamin J. She was very involved with her two sons throughout her life. Marilyn enjoyed a wide range of activities. She was an active member of B'nai B'rith Women (now known as Jewish Women International) and served as the Mamre Chapter's president from 1989 - 1991. She also contributed regularly to many philanthropies including Hadassah, the Jewish Federation, Temple Beth - El, Sinai Synagogue, South Bend Hebrew Day School, the B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation, South Bend Civic Theater, and the Art League. Marilyn was active in her high school reunions and served on several reunion committees, even heading up the "30 - something" reunion when the 30th was skipped. In her free time, she also enjoyed helping others by serving as an AARP tax assist volunteer providing tax preparation to low - income individuals and senior citizens. Prior to her decline in health, Marilyn was a regular early morning lap swimmer at the YMCA. Recently, Marilyn and Bob enjoyed traveling. They traveled to Israel in 1994 and again in 2008. They also participated in a humanitarian mission to Cuba in 2004. They enjoyed cruising and were able to see many other beautiful countries. Over the last several years, Bob and Marilyn enjoyed spending four months together in Miami for the winter. Marilyn is survived by her husband, Robert of 38+ years; two sons, Joshua and Benjamin, both of South Bend; and a brother, Jeffrey Demby of Bradenton, FL. Funeral services are scheduled to take place on Tuesday, January 20, at 2 p.m. in Sinai Synagogue, 1102 East LaSalle Avenue, South Bend, IN 46617. Burial will follow at Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery in Mishawaka. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Sinai Synagogue, South Bend, Temple Beth - El, South Bend, or to the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley.

Tachman, Dr. Harold
Jan. 17, 2009
A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Tachman attended Soldan High School, and proudly served his country during WWII in Europe and in the Philippines. After graduating from the Illinois College of Optometry, he maintained a private practice for 50 years in St. Louis and Eureka, Missouri. He was a member of the American Optometric Association, a former president of the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, and a member of Shaare Zedek synagogue in St. Louis and Sinai Synagogue in South Bend. Dr. Tachman enjoyed his retirement years with loving family and wonderful friends in Granger, Indiana. Funeral services will be in St. Louis, and burial at Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Elfriede Tachman Memorial Scholarship Fund, University of Missouri Medical School, Columbia, Missouri.

Caskey, Gloria J.
July 29, 1941 - Jan. 13, 2009

GRANGER - Gloria J. Caskey, 67, passed away Tuesday, January 13, in her home. She was born July 29, 1941, in Boyne City, Michigan, to Lena and Alfred Ikens. On August 27, 1966, she married John Caskey in Midland, Michigan. He survives along with two daughters, Anne (David) Farmer of Chicago and Lori (Steve) Sigety of Mishawaka. She is also survived by a brother, Gary Ikens (Virginia Schultz) of Aiken, South Carolina. Gloria graduated from Midland High School in 1959 and received an associate degree from Davenport College. For the last 29 years she was employed by Bludot, Inc., as an office administrator. A memorial service will take place at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 16, in the McGann Hay Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23 (enter off Cherry Road). Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Chamberland Cemetery on M - 40 between Marcellus five miles South of Lawton, MI. Visitation will take place on Thursday, January 15, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., and one hour prior to the service on Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Free Lungs, P.O. Box 27, Fishers, IN 46038.
