Manak, Thomas R.
Dec. 25, 2008

SOUTH BEND - Thomas R. (Manuszak) Manak, died December 25, 2008, in his home after an extensive illness. He was born in South Bend, In, to Walter and Catherine Manuszak, and besides his parents was preceded in death by his brothers, John of South Bend, Richard of Goleta, CA, Walter of Lebanon, PA, and his sister, Marge of Santa Barbara, CA. Tom graduated from Central High School in 1941 after considerable success in football, including being names All State. He was then recruited by Frank Leahy to play on Leahy's first freshman team at Notre Dame. His college years were interrupted by World War II, and he served as a Second Lieutenant and Finance Officer at Third Army Headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany. While on leave in South Bend, in 1945, he married the former Marjorie Meuleman, who died in 1977. She was the mother of his three children. Upon his discharge form the Army, Tom returned to Notre Dame. He chose to concentrate on his studies and completion of his degree rather than returning to football. He graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in business in 1948. After a short employment with the former H.D. Lee Company, he went to work in real estate and right - of - way for Indiana & Michigan Power Company, from which he retired in 1985, after 36 years. In 1980 he married the former Edith Veltri, who survives. He is also survived by his sons, James of Indianapolis, William of Sacramento, CA, and his daughter, Sue Ann Leboza of Green Oaks, IL, as well as grandchildren, Whitney Sullender of Indianapolis, Matthew and Marisa Manak of California and Ben, Zachary and Abigail Leboza of Green Oaks, IL. Also surviving are his brother, George of Goleta, California, and many nieces and nephews. Tom was a member of Sacred Heart Parish at Notre Dame, and the retirees Club of I&M. He enjoyed travel, and was pleased to revisit many of the areas in Europe familiar from his time in the Army. He faithfully followed Notre Dame football. He especially enjoyed his weekly meeting with the little select group of "experts" who met on Monday to critique the games. Cremation will be handled by McGann - Hay Funeral Home. Visitation will be in the McGann - Hay - Granger Chapel, 13260 S.R. 23 at Cherry Road from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, with memorial services at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 29, 2008. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637, or to the Humane Society of South Bend.

McGraw, Patrick J.
Nov. 15, 1950 - Dec. 24, 2008

SOUTH BEND - Patrick Jamison McGraw died December 24, 2008, in his South Bend, Indiana, home. Pat was born on November 15, 1950, in Fort Morgan, Colorado, to Janice L. McGraw and Herschel D. McGraw. Raised in Fort Collins, Colorado, he attended Fort Collins High School and then Shattuck Military Academy of Faribault, Minnesota, before attending the University of Notre Dame on a football scholarship. In 1973 Pat returned to Fort Collins after receiving his BS in finance from ND where he started his own business gathering and hauling moss rock among other ventures. It was there that Pat first became involved in real estate development as he worked with his father, H.D., in building the Coachlight apartments in northeast Fort Collins. Always an entrepreneurial individual, Pat returned to South Bend in 1983 where he soon began a successful career in real estate development and property management. His vision regarding the development potential around the Notre Dame campus was realized when he built the Jamison Inn in 1986 and Oak Hill condominium complex in 1988. Both projects were important precursors to the current development activity surrounding campus. Pat's imprint in South Bend was not limited to his professional pursuits as he actively worked within the disabled community and youth athletics, both of which were important causes to him. Pat's true passion, though, was his family, and his devotion to those he loved was unmatched. As a father, friend and companion, he will be sorely missed. Pat was predeceased by his father, H.D., and two brothers, Hersch and Greg McGraw. He is survived by his mother, Jan; sister, Jenny McGraw; two children, Patrick (Lindsey) McGraw and Jamie McGraw; longtime companion and soul mate, Missy Bornheimer; as well as a wonderful group of loyal friends. Arrangements are being handled by the McGann - Hay Funeral Home, and a private memorial service will be held early next month. Inquiries may be directed through McGann - Hay. Memorial contributions may be made to Logan Center of South Bend, IN, or to Hospice of St. Joseph County, IN.

Jones, Gregory D.
Dec. 19, 2008

SOUTH BEND - Gregory D. Jones, 52, formerly of Three Rivers, MI died December 19,.

He was the son of the late Vera Cecile Reynolds, and Robert Dayton Jones, who survives.

Also surviving are two sisters, Pam (Tom) Allen and Kelly (Dave) Evans, both of Three Rivers; brother, Mike (Michelle) Jones of Bronson, MI.

Cremation will take place.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Center for the Homeless.

Ftergiotis, Stefanos
Nov. 12, 1960 - Dec. 21, 2008

MISHAWAKA - Stefanos "Steve" Ftergiotis, 48, passed away December 21, 2008, in his home. He was born to Pantelis Ftergiotis, who preceded him in death, and Kyriaka Ftergiotis, who survives in Greece. Steve is also survived by his wife, Maria; children, Millie, Teresa, Pantelis and Nicholas Ftergiotis; and a brother, Dimitris. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4 - 7 p.m. in the McGann Hay, Granger Chapel, with services immediately following. Burial will take place in Greece. In lieu of flowers, a fund for the children will be set up at Wells Fargo Bank, or donations can go to the Cub Scouts Pack 110.

Massengill, D. Ryan
July 31, 1975 - Dec. 16, 2008

ELKHART - D. Ryan Massengill, 33, of Elkhart, IN, died December 16, 2008, due to injuries suffered in a car accident. Born July 31, 1975, in Kokomo, IN, he was the son of Dennis and Pamela (Rinehart) Massengill. They survive in Huntington, IN. On April 21, 2004, Ryan married Michele (Emmons) Massengill. She survives in Elkhart. Also surviving are three children, Tori Neal, Keegan and Cadence Massengill; one sister, Marnie (Curt) Cornell of Osceola; and his maternal grandparents, Paul and JoAnn Rinehart of Kokomo. Ryan loved the Dallas Cowboys, IU basketball, golf, and all Fantasy sports. He also loved music; one of his favorite bands was the Beatles. However, first and foremost, he loved his family. Friends may call on today from 5 - 8 p.m. in the McGann Hay, Granger Chapel, enter off Cherry Road. Funeral services will be on Friday, also in the funeral home, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Way or to The Community Foundation.

Martin, Patricia Lynn
Oct. 6, 1951 - Dec. 16, 2008

MISHAWAKA - Patricia Lynn Martin, 57, of Mishawaka, passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2008, in her residence. Patricia entered this world on October 6, 1951, to Donald and Gerardine "Gerry" Jewett in New York. She enjoyed working for her sister Kathie's company, NACJ Investments. Her entire world revolved around her two daughters, Christine Lynn and Megan Elizabeth, raising them to be strong and independent women. She was a fanatical Dallas Cowboys fan, watching them religiously throughout the year. Her favorite time of year was Christmas, as she loved the hustle and bustle of the season, the lights, her decorations, and giving gifts to her loved ones. Survivors include her beloved daughters and son - in - law, Christy Slikas and Robert White of Bryan, Texas (she did forgive them for living so close to the Texas Aggies), and Megan Martin of Mishawaka; mother, Gerardine Jewett of South Carolina; three sisters and two brothers - in - law; numerous nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 6 - 8 p.m. today in the McGann Hay, Granger Chapel, enter off Cherry Road. Funeral services will be on Friday at 2:00 p.m., also in the funeral home.

Arthur Earl Simon
Jan. 5, 1959 - Dec. 12, 2008

SOUTH BEND - Arthur Earl Simon, 49, died at 12:12 PM on December 12th, 2008. He is survived by his two children, Abigail Rose Simon, 18, a senior at Marian High School, and Joseph Patrick Simon, 19, a sophomore at Youngstown State University (Ohio); his fiancée, Carrie Jones of South Bend; sister, Ame Simon of Seattle; brother, Dana Simon, and his family in Mishawaka; sister, Trista Simon; and stepmother, Sylvia Simon of Franklin, Indiana; and his niece, Roxanne Hilton of Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Don and Josie Simon of South Bend; and a sister, Julie Hilton of Indianapolis. Arthur was a graduate of Marian High School where he was a recognized athlete. He earned an associate degree from Ferris State University and completed his bachelor's of science degree at Purdue University in Restaurant, Hotel, and Institutional Management. He worked in the family business, Simon Brothers in South Bend, until it was purchased by Clark Food. Arthur remained in the food business for many years until he changed industries and became a salesperson in the RV industry. Arthur was an avid sportsman loving golf, skiing, boating, fishing and enjoying the outdoors with his family. He never missed a game his son or his son's friends played in or a dance performance of his daughter's. He loved many and was loved by many. He will be missed for a very long time by a very large group of people, as every life he touched, he touched deeply. Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. today, Dec. 14, in the Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood at Jefferson; services at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15; burial service immediately following at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Burkhard, Edward E.
Nov. 28, 1927 - Dec. 10, 2008

SOUTH BEND - Edward E. Burkhard, born November 28, 1927, in Dickinson, ND, passed away December 10, 2008 in Rivergate Terrace, Riverview, MI. He had been ill the last three years. Edward was 81. His parents, Earl W. and Dorothy C. Burkhard of South Bend preceded him in death; but he is survived by his sister, Dorothy E. Burkhard of South Bend. Also surviving him are his six children: Wendy (Chris) Balden, Mary (Tony) Goodfellow, Mimi (Joe) Vetrano, Jim (Karrie) Burkhard, Tom Burkhard, Edward Burkhard, Jr.; and their mother, Jan Burkhard, who lives in Trenton, MI. There are nine grandchildren. Edward was an accountant and computer programmer throughout the years. After high school in LaGrange, IL, he enlisted in the Navy for two years. Upon discharge, he attended the University of North Dakota for one year, where he was initiated into the SAE fraternity. He got his B.S. degree at the University of Indiana over the next three years. He was very proud of his Masonic ties, becoming Past Master of his lodge in Chicago, (they later went to Palatine, IL), and again Past Master of his lodge in Trenton, MI. He will be laid to rest in Highland Cemetery, South Bend, alongside his parents and maternal grandparents. A small private service, family only, will be held at the cemetery chapel. The McGann Hay, Forest G. Hay Chapel, S. Ironwood Dr., has helped with arrangements.

Behling, Dorothy A.
Nov. 29, 1916 - Dec. 3, 2008

ELKHART - Mrs. Dorothy Ann Behling, 92, of Elkhart formerly of South Bend passed away at 5:32 pm Wednesday at Elkhart General Hospital. Dorothy was born on November 29, 1916 in Martinsburg, WV, to George Howard and Mary (Kendrick) Mossman. On June 17, 1939 she married Raymond Ernest Behling, Sr. who passed away on June 14, 1984. Mrs. Behling was retired from the former Ball Band/Uniroyal where she made Tennis Shoes. She was a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where she was a member of both the Womens Circle and the Sewing Circle. Dorothy was a 1935 Graduate of Washington - Clay High School now Clay High School. Survivors include her two sons: Raymond E. (Judy) Behling, Jr. of South Bend and Thomas C. (Sue) Behling of Elkhart; five grandchildren; six great - grand - children and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters Maxine Miltenberger and Geraldine Evans and her brother Charles Mossman as well as her parents. A memorial service will be at 11:00 am Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at the corner of Laurel and Auten Rds. In South Bend. Her ashes will be entombed later at Highland Cemetery. Mildred Anna Ailer
April 7, 1918 - Dec. 2, 2008

SOUTH BEND - Mildred Anna Ailer, 90, passed away December 2, 2008. Mildred is survived by brothers, Frederick Henry (Norma) Fautz and Jack Theodore Fautz. While Mildred had no children of her own she is survived by a nephew, Thomas H. (Bonnie) Fautz, who was like a son to her. Mildred also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, great - nieces and nephews, along with great - great - nieces and nephews. Cremation is taking place; burial will follow later. The McGann Hay Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
