Noel King
Oct. 18, 1919 - Nov. 7, 2009

Noel King, of Wanatah, died Nov. 7, 2009. He was born Oct. 18, 1919 in Logansport, Ind., and when he was two years of age, the family moved to the family farm in Clinton Township. He was a 1938 graduate of Clinton Township High School; Central Normal College, Danville, Ind., in 1942, and later Indiana University where under the G.I. Bill, he completed work toward graduate degrees. A World War II veteran, he spent most of his almost four years in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Hale, a destroyer, in the Pacific Theater. After the war he returned to Clinton Township. He married the girl next door, Ella Mae Bishop, in 1946. The couple were parents of two sons. Except for his early years in Logansport, Mr. King was a life - long resident of Clinton Township. He was a career educator and served four schools, all in La Porte County: Clinton Township, Mill Creek, La Porte High School and Westville. He was variously a classroom teacher, a coach and principal for 34 years. Noel King was a life member of the American Legion in Wanatah and the Masonic Lodge in Westville. He was a regular blood donor and gave over 19 gallons while also serving as a volunteer at the blood donor sites. As a veteran bowler and league secretary in La Porte, he was inducted into the La Porte Bowling Hall of Fame and was honored to have the "Noel King League" named after him. He was a member of the La Porte Horseshoe Pitchers Association where he pitched and served as treasurer. Noel King was a man of diverse interests, skills and energy. He built his own home, garage, and pool; worked the garden soil and Mae's flower beds, felled trees, split and buzzed wood, played a fierce game of euchre, was an active swimmer and reader, relished American literature and poetry, drove a blacktop paver in summer employment, and waged a long standing battle against chipmunks and moles. He concurred with Benjamin Franklin's proposition that "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." For decades he was the unofficial mayor of the village of Haskell, where neighbors were so good to him in his final years. His wife Ella Mae, preceded him in death on May 30, 2009, as did his two brothers, Lloyd and Gale. He is survived by two sons, Phillip (Marianne) of Downers Grove, Ill., Steven (Martha) of La Porte; and three grandchildren, Matthew, Kristin and Sam. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009 at Essling Funeral Home, La Porte. Memorial contributions may be made to The La Porte County Chapter of the American Red Cross, to the La Porte Hospital Foundation or donor's choice.

Estelle Polis
Nov. 7, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Estelle Polis, 96, passed away on Saturday night, November 7, 2009. Estelle was born in Chicago, IL, to the late Morris and Eva Beck. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Morris Polis in 1994, and her beloved son, Jerry Polis in 1985. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters, Sam Beck, Al Beck, Irv Beck, Doris Rose and Rose Tenenbown. She is survived by her daughter, Francie (Morris) Rosen, Robert Polis, her grandchildren, Marla Rosen, Zachary Rosen, Jillian Horwitz and Elias Polis, as well as her sister, Shirley Green of Houston, Texas, and many nieces and nephews. Estelle lived continuously in South Bend for over 68 years and was an active member of our community. Through the years she was a member of B'nai B'rith Women, Pioneer Women, Temple Beth - El and Sinai Synagogue. She was a charitable person and performed many acts of kindness. During the 1930s Estelle managed the Palmer Shops in Chicago and was an outstanding salesperson and a business trouble - shooter. Funeral services are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10, 2009, in the McGann Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood, South Bend, IN. Donations may be made to Sinai Synagogue or to Hospice.

Nancy L. Roberts
Feb. 19, 1946 - Oct. 30, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Nancy Louise Roberts (nee Cochrane), from South Bend, Indiana, passed away on October 30, 2009. She had been a long - time resident of Irvine, CA. Nancy was born on February 19, 1946 in West Palm Beach, FL. Due to her father's military career, she lived all over the country, including Florida, Oregon, Tennessee, California, Colorado and Indiana. Nancy graduated with a BA in History from Indiana University. She was an Assistant Vice President in the commercial lending division of Bank of America, when her illness forced her to take disability leave. Nancy was active in her church, Trinity Presbyterian, of Tustin, CA. Nancy is survived by two loving sons, Brian and Kevin Roberts; her brother, Bill Cochrane; nieces, Kate, Bridget, Meredith and Alison Cochrane; uncle, James Nance; daughter - in - law, Michelle Roberts; and sister - in - law, Laurel Cochrane and many cousins. Edwin M. Balanow
September 1, 1941 - November 4, 2009

MISHAWAKA - Edwin Balanow, 68, of Mishawaka, IN; died Wednesday afternoon November 4, 2009 in the Hospice House; Elkhart, IN.

He was born September 1, 1941 in Chicago, IL; had lived in South Bend for 66 years.

Mr. Balanow is survived by his children, three daughters, Kelly Balanow of South Bend, IN; Robin Balanow of Colorado; Jessica Balanow of Mishawaka, IN; fours sons,Michael (Tina) Balanow of New Carlisle IN; Timmy (Heidi) Balanow of South Bend IN; Patrick Balanow of Mishawaka IN; Ben Balanow of Mishawaka IN; five grandchildren; Jacob, John, Adam, Ryan, and Cory; three sisters, Pam Maddox of Granger IN; Shelly Harris of Georgia, Jill Clark of Granger IN.

He was proceeded in death by a son, Scott Balanow.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday November 8, 2009 in the McGann Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood Drive, South Bend. Interment follows in Rose Hill Cemetery, South Bend.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kidney Foundation.

Gregory G. Fullmer
September 25, 1958 – October 31, 2009

Gregory G. Fullmer, 51, of Indianapolis, formerly of South Bend, passed away October 31, 2009. He was born September 25, 1958 to Martin and Mary Fullmer. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary, and brother, Kevin Fullmer. Survivors include his father, Martin Sr. of South Bend; brothers, Martin Jr. (Gale) of Osceola and Mark Fullmer of North Liberty; and many nieces and nephews. Burial will take place with a private service held later. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care.

Daniel V. Shepherd
Dec. 18, 1965 - Nov. 3, 2009

NILES - Daniel Vincent Shepherd, contractor and outdoorsman, passed away November 3, 2009, at his home in Niles, MI, after a courageous 21/2 - year battle with cancer. He was 43 years old. Vincent grew up in the Niles, Michigan, and South Bend, Indiana, area. He was the oldest son born to Daniel Marston Shepherd and Jane Morris Shepherd Tenney, and the stepson of Mark William Tenney and Gail Sanborn Shepherd. His grandparents were Mendel and Floreine Welch Morris, and Marston and Edith Brunson Shepherd. On September 27, 1997, Vincent married Denise Marie Lasch, daughter of Richard and Darlene Bentzler Lasch. They have three children, Sarah Elizabeth (10), Adam Vincent (7) and Eva Marie (5). Vincent graduated from Niles High School and attended Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. He met Denise while working as a contract employee at I/N Tek and I/N Kote in New Carlisle, IN. He subsequently worked in the construction industry and was a passionate outdoorsman and conservationist. He was a hunting guide locally and also enjoyed hunting in Alaska and Canada. Vincent is survived by his wife, children, parents and step - parents, as well as his brothers, David Morris Shepherd (Flora), Christopher Adam Shepherd (Holly), and sister, Megan Shepherd McConnaughey (Bryan); stepsisters, Barbara Kathryn Beach (Doug), Shannan Eve Day (Darren) and Heather Marie Concannon; and stepbrother, Scott William Tenney (Debbie), who preceded him in death. He is also survived by Robert Mendel Morris (uncle), Anne Shepherd Schmitt (aunt), and many nieces and nephews. A viewing is scheduled for Friday, November 6th, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at McGann - Hay Funeral Home, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23 at Cherry Road, Granger, IN. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 7th, at 11:30 a.m., also at the McGann - Hay Funeral Home location in Granger, IN, with viewing one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to The American Cancer Society .

Richard H. Clifford Sr.
June 27, 1929 - Oct. 30, 2009

SOUTH BEND - Mr. Richard Hugh Clifford Sr., 80, passed away unexpectedly in his residence Friday afternoon. He was born in Hartford, CT, to Thomas and Esther (Wolfe) Clifford and grew up in Colchester, CT. He served in the U.S. Army during the occupation of Germany after WW II. A 1956 graduate of the University of Kentucky, he attended the University of Notre Dame Law School and lived in the Vetville campus housing. He also served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). His work career included being a school teacher in Indiana and Connecticut as well as working for the City of South Bend and the State of Indiana. He recited poetry and was a student of literature and history. He raised his family here in South Bend but moved for a while to Islamorada, FL, where he leaves some good friends, later returning to South Bend. He was a former member of Sacred Heart Parish. Richard's family and friends were important to him. Surviving Mr. Clifford are his children: Patrick Clifford and Rick Clifford, both of South Bend, Laura (Michael) Furfaro of Mishawaka; grandchildren, Ryan and Kaitlyn Clifford, both of South Bend, and Michael, Sarah and Joseph Furfaro, all of Mishawaka; and a sister, Connie (Al) Wang of Manhassett, NY; and a brother, Danny Clifford of Old Saybrook, CT. He also leaves many nieces and nephews surviving. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers: Robert, Michael and Thomas Clifford, and a sister, Roberta Crawford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in the downstairs Crypt of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the Notre Dame campus, Rev. Thomas Jones, CSC, pastor, officiating. Friends may call on Wednesday from 5 - 7 p.m. in the McGann Hay Funerals | Cremations | Gatherings, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison near Ironwood, where a military honors service will take place at 6:50 p.m. Mr. Clifford enjoyed both public television WNIT and public radio WVPE, and he would have requested that instead of sending flowers that those funds be donated in his memory to one of those stations.

SOUTH BEND - Sandra Lee Dec, 66, died Sunday at Ironwood Care & Rehab.

Sandy was born in Hammond, IN to the late Vincent M. and Emily T. (Housty) Dec.

Survived by a sister Romona S. Johnson and her brother Vincent R. Dec.

McGann Hay University Chapel in charge.

Funeral Mass, Wednesday, 11:00am, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Visitation: 10:30 - 11am at church. Burial: Highland Cemetery.
