SYLVIA - Cleo Loreen Ahrens Etter, 86, died Feb. 25 at Leisure Homestead in Stafford. She was born Aug. 28, 1914, in Mankato, the daughter of Lewis and Nancy Warren Ahrens. She was a graduate of Mankato High School. She married Wesley Harris July 14, 1953. He died in 1970. She married Joseph O. Etter Nov. 7, 1974. He preceded her in death. A resident of Sylvia since 1968, coming from Los Angeles, Calif., she owned a beauty shop in Mankato, was an accountant in Los Angeles and was a nurse's aide. Mrs. Etter was a member of First Christian Church in Los Angeles. Survivors include four stepsons, Floyd Harris of Paradise, Calif., Junior Etter of Forrest Park, Ga., Donald Etter of Bostwick, Neb., and Larry Etter of Hutchinson; one stepdaughter, A. Marguerite Delka of Hardy, Neb.; 12 step grandchildren; 20 step great-grandchildren; and five step great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Florence Thompson and Crystal Etter; one stepson, Melvin Etter; and one step grandson. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sylvia cemetery. Friends may call until 5 tonight at Minnis Chapel in Stafford.

Glen R. Boyce 1919-2001
JETMORE - Glen R. Boyce, 81, died Feb. 24 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. He was born Sept. 23, 1919, in Edwards County, the son of Samuel Brown and Winifred Blanche Wyckoff Boyce. He married Fern L. Cowles Nov. 23, 1945, in Larned. A lifetime area resident of Jetmore, he was a farmer and rancher. Boyce was a member of Grace Community Church of Dodge City and the Senior Center in Jetmore. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Patricia Lee Ardern of Castle Rock, Colo.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sandra June Gustin; and one brother, Dale Boyce. Funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at United Presbyterian Church in Jetmore with the Rev. Kirk Larson officiating. Burial will be at Fairmont cemetery in Jetmore. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday at Beckwith Funeral Home in Jetmore. Memorials are suggested to the Ronald McDonald House, in care of the funeral home.

Harry H. Enright 1914-2001
HAYS - Harry H. Enright, 86, died Feb. 24 at Stonybrook Retirement Community in Manhattan. He was born July 2, 1914, in Fredonia, the son of William and Nellie Blevins Enright. He graduated from Hays High School and attended Fort Hays State University. He married Sylvia B. Plymire Jan. 21, 1948, in Ellinwood. She died Nov. 11, 1980. A resident of Hays, he was gauger for Service Pipeline in Hays for 25 years. Enright was a member of Liberty Fellowship Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, all of Hays. Survivors include three sons, Terry Enright of Longmont, Colo., Randy Enright of Denver, Colo., and Monte Enright of Manhattan; one daughter, Kathy Enright of California; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Ray Enright, John Enright, Ralph Enright, Paul Enright and Lester Enright; and by four sisters, Vera Enright, Geneva Enright, Nellie Enright and Florine Enright. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Revs. William Miller and Steve Dinkel officiating. Burial will be at Mount Allen cemetery in Hays with graveside military honors by the Hays American Legion. Friends may call from 6:30-8 tonight and from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at Brock's North Hill Chapel in Hays. Memorials are suggested to Hays Baseball Association or the Arthritis Foundation, in care of the chapel.

Eldon D. Schneider 1945-2001
OVERLAND PARK - Eldon D. Schneider, 55, died Feb. 24 at his home in Overland Park from cancer. He was born June 22, 1945, in Rush County, the son of Henry and Helen Appel Schneider. He married Donita Spiker Payne June 13, 1981, in Overland Park. A resident of Overland Park for 25 years, coming from Wichita, he was an accountant. Schneider was a member of the board of directors of Insurant National Advisory Council and past president of Tanglewood Lake Owners Association, board of directors. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Jeff Payne of Sabetha; one daughter, Heather Payne of Overland Park; one brother, Larry Schneider of La Crosse; two sisters, Emma Curnette of Garden City and Donna Luft of Bison; and two grandchildren. Prayer service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Overland Park. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church with the Revs. Michael Peck and Maurice Schaus officiating. Memorials are suggested to Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Overland Park, First Lutheran Church of La Crosse or Sisters Servants of Mary, all in care of Great Bend Family Mortuary.

Ruth Elizabeth Janke 1921-2001
McCRACKEN - Ruth Elizabeth Janke, 80, died Feb. 25 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 13, 1921, in eastern Kansas, the daughter of David and Margaret Begbie Moore. She married Alvin Janke Aug. 21, 1940, in Great Bend. A resident of McCracken, she was a homemaker and bookkeeper for the family business. Mrs. Janke was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Lutheran Women's Missionary League, St. Luke's Lutheran Sunday School, all in Bazine; Town and Country Ladies Club and Extension Homemakers Unit, both of Rush County; and McCracken Library Board of McCracken. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Ivan Janke of McCracken; one daughter, Peggy Allen of Stanwood, Wash.; one brother, Hugh Moore of Great Falls, Mont.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church in Bazine with the Rev. Randall Jahnke officiating. Burial will be at McCracken cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City and 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church. Edna Vera Hines 1894-2001
Edna Vera Hines, 107, died Feb. 25 at her home in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 31, 1894, in Council Grove, the daughter of Charles Fredrick and Mary Etta Ludlow Hines. A resident of Great Bend since 1917, coming from Salina, she worked as a bank teller at Citizens National Bank and American State Bank. Ms. Hines was a member of First Presbyterian Church, American Legion Auxiliary, past president of the auxiliary, all in Great Bend, and a lifetime member of Kansas Women's Golf Association. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers and seven sisters. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bryant-Christians Chapel with the Rev. Tom Robson officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Gypsum Hill cemetery in Salina. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.

James 'Jim' Joseph Koenigsman 1927-2001
HAYS - James 'Jim' Joseph Koenigsman, 54, died Feb. 25 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was born May 3, 1946, in Tipton, the son of Ed and Veronica Lutgen Koenigsman. He married Lois C. Lohrmeyer Sept. 3, 1966, in Logan. She died Aug. 23, 1995. He graduated from Fort Hays State University in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in business. A resident of Hays, he was a housing manager for DSNWK. Koenigsman was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and Ellis Country Club, both in Hays. Survivors include four sons, Mike Koenigsman of Omaha, Neb., Russ Koenigsman and Kevin Koenigsman, both of Hays, and Mark Koenigsman of Wichita; one daughter, Brenda Bond of Hays; five brothers, Frank Koenigsman and Dave Koenigsman, both of Omaha, Ralph Koenigsman and Fred Koenigsman, both of Beloit, and Rick Koenigsman of Tipton; two sisters, Doris Mick of Newton and Mary Ellen Streit of Flint, Mich.; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Ed Koenigsman. Parish vigil will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Revs. Ken Lohrmeyer and Don Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph cemetery in Hays. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 Wednesday and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Thursday, all at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to College Trust Fund for his grandchildren, in care of the chapel.

Anna Stegman 1908-2001
PFEIFER - Anna Stegman, 92, died Feb. 27 at her daughter's home in Victoria. She was born April 15, 1908, near Emmeram, the daughter of Andrew and Maria Storm Dinkel. She married Joseph G. Stegman Aug. 18, 1931, in Pfeifer. He died Feb. 3, 1970. A resident of Pfeifer, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Stegman was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church in Victoria and a former member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and Holy Cross Christian Mothers. Survivors include one son, Arthur Stegman of the home; two daughters, Mary Ann Adams of Salina and Ethel Younger of Victoria; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Nick Dinkel and Rich Dinkel; one sister; Amelia "Molly" Stegman; and one half-brother, Fred Dinkel. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Cline's Mortuary in Victoria. Daughters of Isabella rosary will be 8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church with the Revs. Frank X. Grinko, Felix Petrovsky, Emil Dinkel and John Lager. Burial will be at Holy Cross cemetery in Pfeifer. Friends may call from 3-9 p.m. Thursday and from 8:30-9:45 a.m. Friday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the church, the Capuchin Province of MidAmerica, Hospice of Hays Medical Center or Masses, all in care of the mortuary.

Mildred Louise Soeken 1914-2000
CHASE - Mildred Louise Soeken, 86, died Dec. 16 at Rock Island, Ill. She was born May 8, 1914, in Macksville, the daughter of Arthur and Ida Schneider Voight. She married Edward J. Soeken Oct. 9, 1938. He died Aug. 26, 1983. A resident of Rock Island, coming from Chase, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Soeken was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Rock Island and was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church of Lyons. Survivors include one son, Vernon Soeken of Rock Island; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Edward Voight; and one sister, Ruby Knop. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church in Lyons with the Rev. Calvin L'Heureux officiating. Memorials are suggested to Grace Lutheran Church, in care of Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons.

Gerald F. 'Gump' Gumbir 1937-2001
POTTER - Gerald F. "Gump" Gumbir, 63, died Feb. 24 at his home in Potter. He was born June 2, 1937, in Great Bend, the son of William F. and Edith May Rose Gumbir. He married Janice "Jan" F. Caine Aug. 22, 1958, in Wichita. A resident of Potter for 25 years, he worked for Curley's for 45 years and was serving as vice president for the company. Gumbir was a member of St. Hilda's Episcopal Church in Kimball and the Potter Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Kevin L. Gumbir of Denver, Colo.; two daughters, Jodie Nienhuser of Peetz, Colo., and Jennifer Lee Ann Ingwersen of Brainard, Neb.; his mother of Reading, Calif.; two brothers, Jim Eastman and Bob Eastman, both of California; one sister, Kathy Schlosser of California; stepmother, Beatrice Gumbir of Bakersfield, Calif.; and six grandchildren. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball with the Rev. Ed Hunzeker officiating. Cremation will take place. Friends may call until 8 tonight with the family receiving friends from 7-8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Jerry Gumbir Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home.

James Reynolds Garetson 1922-2001
MONTEZUMA - James Reynolds Garetson, 79, died Feb. 28 at his home. He was born Jan. 22, 1922, at his family home in northeast Haskell County, the son of James Davies and Laura Magdalena Reynolds Garetson. He married Martha Loucks Aug. 19, 1944, in Copeland. A lifetime resident of Montezuma, he was a farmer and stockman. Garetson was a member of the United Methodist Church in Copeland, past school board member of Copeland and Colusa Schools and secretary for Providence Grain Board. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Jesse James Garetson of Copeland; six daughters, Chloe Rita Dohrmann of Ensign, Debra Henley, Shelly Baldwin and Melanie Penner, all of Wichita, Kerri Batman of Great Bend and Andrea Cearley of Sublette; two brothers, L. Moner Garetson of Copeland and Robert "Red" Garetson of San Antonio, Texas; one sister, Mary Bell of Milan, Tenn; 15 grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, John Garetson, Paul Garetson and Howard Garetson; two sisters, Marjorie Waldron and Wanda McManus. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Junior High Gymnasium in Copeland with the Rev. Warren Cico officiating. Burial will be at Copeland cemetery. Viona E. Ewalt 1905-2001
Viona E. Ewalt, 95, died Feb. 23 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Aug. 8, 1905, in Great Bend, the daughter of Lot L. and Marie Schaeffer Ewalt. A resident of Great Bend since 1994, coming from Prairie Village, she was a retired school teacher is Osage City, Fredonia and Kansas City. Ms. Ewalt was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Rebekah Circle, Jeremiah Howard Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Portia Club and Barton County Retired Teachers. Survivors include one nephew, Robert McNulty of British West Indies; one great-nephew; and one great-great-nephew. She was preceded in death by one sister, Velma McNulty. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Great Bend cemetery with the Rev. Tom Robson officiating. Friends may call until 9 tonight with the family receiving friends from 6-8 tonight, both at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend. Mildred Pearl Smith 1920-2001
MACKSVILLE - Mildred Pearl Smith, 80, died Feb. 27 at Pratt Regional Medical Center. She was born Aug. 22, 1920, in Neodesha, the daughter of Joseph Slone and Sarah Viola Callier. She married Samuel Nathan Smith Nov. 28, 1938, in St. John. He died Feb. 5, 1990. A resident of Macksville since 1938, she was a homemaker and farmer. Mrs. Smith was a member of Macksville Christian Church and Christian Women's Fellowship, both of Macksville. Survivors include one daughter, Mildred Rebecca Courtney of Macksville; one sister, Ruby Mable Buchwitz of Hibbing, Mexico; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Charley A. Callier, Joseph R. Callier, Lawrence T. Callier, Thomas E. Callier and Wilbur S. Callier; and four sisters, Hazel E. Bradley, Beatrice H. Callier, Abigal R. Ivy and Alma V. Childress. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Carey Haner officiating. Burial will be at Farmington cemetery in Macksville. Vicki Ellen Haberman 1942-2001
LACEY, Wash. < Vicki Ellen Haberman, 58, died Feb. 27, at her home in Lacey, Wash. She was born June 30, 1942, in Pittsburg, the daughter of Fred Allen and Wilma Blackburn Carr. She married Donald Haberman July 2, 1960, at Aken, S.C. A longtime resident of Lacy, formerly of Larned, she was a registered nurse at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Wash. Mrs. Haberman was a Christian. Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Bradley Haberman of Lacey, Kevin Haberman of Tumwater, Wash., and Scott Haberman of Shelton, Wash.; two brothers, Fred Allen Carr Jr. and Bob Carr, both of Humble, Texas; one sister, Gayla Berry of Liberty, Texas; and five grandchildren. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Monday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned. Family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral service was held Friday in Lacey. Cremation is planned. Memorials are suggested to Larned Emergency Medical Service, in care of the funeral home.
