Lewis Otto Blocker
BURDETT - Lewis Otto Blocker, 94, died Feb. 11, 2000, at Great Plains Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Salina.

He was born April 22, 1905, at Haven, the son of Herman D. and Emille A. Beltz Blocker. A longtime Burdett resident, he was a retired farmer.

He belonged to Grace Lutheran Church, Larned, and the Burdett Seniors.

On Aug. 10, 1930, he married Laura Rose Weichold at Elmdale. She died March 13, 1998.

Survivors include: two daughters, Lola Albrecht, Lincolnville, and Lugene Stephens, Salina; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church, Larned, with Pastor Andy Keltner presiding. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Morell Funeral Home, Larned. Burial will be in Browns Grove Cemetery, Burdett.

Memorials may be sent to the church or Burdett Emergency Medical Service in care of the funeral home.

Dale A. Dow
MOUNT HOPE - Dale A. Dow, 73, died Feb. 11, 2000, at Mount Hope.

He was born Aug. 16, 1926, at Mount Hope, the son of Fred W. and Marguerite I. Barnes Dow. A lifetime Mount Hope area resident, he was a farmer.

Survivors include: his mother, Mount Hope; four brothers, Lyle "Bud, " Mount Hope, Loren, Medford, Ore., Irvin, Wichita, and Arlyn, Harvey, La.; five sisters, Zelma Beck, Haven, Nellora Evans and Corinne Adams, both of Wichita, Juanita Sweeney, Wheatridge, Colo., and Ruthe Pelz, Aurora, Colo.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Wulf-Ast Mortuary Chapel, Mount Hope, with Pastor Bob Gleason presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the mortuary. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the Mount Hope Ambulance Fund, in care of the mortuary.

Gordon F. Smith
MOUNT HOPE - Gordon F. Smith, 86, died Feb. 9, 2000, at San Clemente, Calif.

He was born Nov. 29, 1913, at Haven, the son of Edd B. and Alma Collmann Smith. A longtime Mount Hope area resident, he was a farmer.

He belonged to United Methodist Church, Mount Hope, and the Masonic Lodge.

On May 14, 1951, he married Vera F. Howard at Halstead. She preceded him in death.

Survivors include: a son, Gordon E. "Jack, " Titusville, Fla.; a daughter, Karen L. Kasa, San Clemente; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mount Hope Cemetery, with the Rev. Bob Gleason presiding.

Memorials may be sent to the Mount Hope Ambulance Fund or the Masonic Lodge, Mount Hope, both in care of Wulf-Ast Mortuary, Mount Hope.

H. Wayne Ploger
KINSLEY - H. Wayne Ploger, 79, died Feb. 11, 2000, at Pratt Regional Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 26, 1920, at Kinsley, the son of Henry and Ella Mae Dorman Ploger. A lifetime Kinsley resident, he was a retired farmer.

He belonged to the Nazarene Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7349, both at Kinsley.

On July 17, 1955, he married Dorothy Wediking at Santa Fe, N.M. She died Aug. 18, 1975.

Survivors include: a sister, Wauneta Ploger, Larned.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at McKillip Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, Kinsley, with the Rev. Joyce Daniels presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery, Kinsley.

Memorials may be sent to the KSU Center for Basic Cancer Research, in care of the funeral home.

Bernice I. Whipple
NESS CITY - Bernice I. Whipple, 101, died Jan. 29, 2000, at the Lane County Long Term Care Center, Dighton.

She was born Nov. 8, 1898, at Ness City, the daughter of Harry and Estella Hayes Gilmore. A longtime Ness County resident, living in Dighton for four years and Ness City for 18 years, she was a homemaker, missionary, nurse and teacher.

She belonged to First Baptist Church, Ness City.

On Sept. 9, 1921, she married Jacob Earl Whipple at Towner, Colo. He died Oct. 16, 1944.

Survivors include: seven sons, Clarence and Rex, both of Beeler, Fenton, Dighton, James, Lakeside, Calif., Donald, Arvada, Colo., Tom, Chicago, and Paul, Fowler, Colo.; two daughters, LaVerne Handy, Eureka, Mont., and Jennie Bates, Denver; 45 grandchildren; 96 great-grandchildren; 54 great-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Wayne Whipple and Thayne Starner; two daughters, Hazel Prose and Ruby Mather; two brothers, Paul and Blaine Gilmore; and a sister, Helen Malone.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Ness City, with the Rev. Russell King presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, and until service time Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Bazine Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church, Ness City, or to United Methodist Church, Beeler, both in care of the funeral home.

Lila May Edwards
GREAT BEND - Lila May Edwards, 86, died Jan. 29, 2000, at Ellinwood Hospital.

She was born Sept. 13, 1913, at Fairview, Okla., the daughter of Lester Hiram and Manerva P. Reed Wheeler. She graduated from Fairview High School. A longtime Great Bend resident, she was a sales clerk for ladies' apparel.

She belonged to Trinity Methodist Church, Great Bend.

She married T. Wayne Hoisington. He died in 1984. She married E.L. Edwards. He died in 1997.

Survivors include: two stepdaughters; a brother, E.J. Wheeler, American Canyon, Calif.; and a sister, Pearl Welch, Clayton, Wash.

She was preceded in death by a son, Terry Wayne Hoisington.

Prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Fryberger Mortuary, Great Bend, with the Rev. John Grummon presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the mortuary. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to service time today at the funeral home. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Elmwood Cemetery, Woodward, Okla.

Memorials may be sent to Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice, in care of the mortuary.

Hazel A. Shriver
DEERFIELD - Hazel A. Shriver, 92, died Jan. 27, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City.

She was born Sept. 21, 1907, at Hartford, the daughter of John "Jack" and Edith Brewer Steenis. A Garden City resident since 1993, moving from Deerfield, she was a homemaker and taught for one year at Harmony Hill School, Kearny County.

She belonged to United Methodist Church, Deerfield, was a past 4-H leader, was active with the Garden City Community College Endowment Association, was a supporter of the Russell Child Development Center, was active with the Kearny County Historical Society and helped to coordinate the publishing of the Kearny County History Book. She was a member of the Kansas genealogical societies of Finney County, Dodge City and Topeka.

On June 27, 1936, she married Oliver W. Shriver at Garden City. He died March 22, 1984.

Survivors include: two nephews, including Keith Jones, Lakin; three nieces; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Josephine Jones and Rowena Urie; and three nephews.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church, Deerfield, with the Rev. Warren Hett presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Burial will be in Deerfield Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the church or Garden City Community College Endowment Association, both in care of the funeral home.
