Kent N. Hughes
LA CROSSE - Kent N. Hughes, 63, died Dec. 31, 2004, at his home, La Crosse.

He was born Dec. 12, 1941, at Marceline, Mo., the son of Harvey R. and Theda Still Hughes.

He graduated in 1959 from Marceline High School. A resident of La Crosse for 13 years, moving from Great Bend, he was a salesman in the retail industry.

He was a member of the U.S. Air Force.

On Sept. 1, 1991, he married Genita Soloman in Sheridan County, Mo. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, William, Jefferson City, Mo.; a daughter, Kimberly Dorrell, Marceline, Mo.; three brothers, Rex, Macon, Mo., Kim, Marceline, Mo., and Rand, Minn.; two sisters, Patricia Couch, Chicago, and Holli Dowell, St. Louis; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a wife, Gladys Smith Hughes; a brother, Gene; and a sister, Kathy.

Funeral will be at 9 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church, La Crosse, with the Rev. Marilyn Christmore presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m., at Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse. Church visitation will be from 8 to 8:50 a.m. Monday. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Marceline, Mo.

Memorials may be sent to Central Rush County EMS, in care of the funeral home.

Robert D. Carpenter
MCPHERSON - Robert D. Carpenter, 72, died Dec. 31, 2004, at Select Specialty Hospital, Wichita.

He was born Jan. 3, 1932, at McPherson, the son of Fred D. and Evelyn Sward Carpenter. He retired from NCRA Refinery after working 35 years as an operator 1A in the R&F unit.

A lifelong resident of McPherson, he graduated from McPherson High School in 1950 and attended McPherson College. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

He belonged to First Baptist Church, VFW Post No. 2715 and American Legion Post No. 24.

Survivors include: a companion, Maurine Gaddis; a son, Wayne Carpenter, Salina; five daughters, Evelyn Carpenter, Gunnison, Colo., Carley Jo Chrislip, McPherson, Sara Foster, McPherson, Rae Ann Middleton, Olathe, and Paula Carpenter, Salina; a sister, Jan Sink, McPherson; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, McPherson, with the Rev. Les Cantrell presiding. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at Stockham Family Funeral Home. Interment will be in McPherson Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to Sonshine Pre-School or to the Central Homecare and Hospice, in care of the funeral home.

Michael J. Geist
SCOTT CITY - Michael J. Geist, 54, died Jan. 6, 2005, at his home, Olathe.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church, Scott City.

Arrangements are pending with Price and Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.

Sheryl K. Smith
WICHITA - Sheryl K. Smith, 60, died Jan. 5, 2005.

She was born Nov. 8, 1944, at Blytheville, Ark., the daughter of William and Ollie Wheat. A former resident of the Great Bend area, she was a homemaker.

On Feb. 20, 1987, she married Larry D. Smith, at Miami, Okla. He survives.

Other survivors include: three sons; four daughters; and 15 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter; and a brother.

Baker Funeral Home, Valley Center, is in charge of arrangements.

James E. Cupp
SCOTT CITY - James Edward Cupp, died Jan. 5, 2005, at Scott County Hospital, Scott City.

He was born Jan. 5, 2005, at Scott City, the infant son of Chandler D. and Meredith L. Miller Cupp.

Survivors include: his parents; a brother, William, of the home; grandparents, Ed and Deva Cupp and Bob and Liz Miller, all of Scott City; and great-grandparents, Charles and Kathryn Duff, Scott City; and Louis Kottmann, Lyons.

Private family services will be at a later date, with the Rev. Lynne Smith presiding. Interment will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to James E. Cupp Memorial Fund, in care of Price and Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.

Gary N. Isaac
MILLERSBURG, OHIO - Gary Neal Isaac, 57, died Dec. 19, 2004, at his home, Millersburg.

He was born Sept. 15, 1947, at McPherson, the son of Alfred P. and Edna E. Isaac. He lived in Kansas until he was 10 years old, moving to Bonners Ferry, Idaho. He was a carpenter and farmer.

On Feb. 8, 1970, he married Carol Justus at Bonners Ferry. She survives.

Other survivors include: three sons; three daughters; his mother, Inman; three brothers; a sister, Kathy Penner, Inman; and 13 grandchildren.

Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg, was in charge of arrangements.

Vera B. Rumsey
DODGE CITY - Vera Burl Rumsey, 85, died Jan. 6, 2005, at Broomfield, Colo.

She was born Dec. 30, 1919, at Skidmore, Mo., the daughter of Lewis Burl and Lizzie Gray Hess. She was an elementary teacher for 32 years, having taught in Spearville, Windhorst and at Sacred Heart School, Dodge City.

On April 23, 1944, she married William LeRoy Rumsey at Dodge City. He died Oct. 7, 1983.

Survivors include: a son, William L., Dodge City; a daughter, Eva Phelps, Broomfield, Colo.; a brother, Homer Hess, Maryville, Mo.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City, with the Rev. Randall Jahnke presiding. Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City.

Memorials may be sent to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home.

Sharon K. Brown
TRIBUNE - Sharon K. Ping Brown, 61, died Jan. 6, 2005, at Greeley County Hospital, Tribune.

She was born April 26, 1943, at Picher, Okla., the daughter of George Washington and Bertie (Crosby) Philpott Ping. She attended school at Syracuse. She had resided in Kansas, Texas, Colorado and Oklahoma. She had worked as a waitress, police dispatcher and at a bank at Tulsa, Okla.

She married Bill Brown. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include: a daughter, Vicky Brown, Joplin, Mo.; three brothers, Darrell Ping, Tulsa, Stan Ping, Syracuse, and Gerald Ping, McLouth; three sisters, Pat Storey, Australia, Loretta Eddy, Calhan, Colo., and Marva Harsh, Syracuse; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Pam Brown; an infant brother, "Little Junior"; and a sister, Delores Edenburn.

A private family service was Friday in Syracuse Cemetery.

Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse, was in charge of arrangements.

Rachel M. Vanazia
MEADE - Rachel M. Vanazia, 72, died Jan. 6, 2005, at Western Plains Regional Hospital, Dodge City.

She was born July 11, 1932, at Meade, the daughter of Benjamin McWithey and Rhoda Anna Schnellbacher. A resident of Meade County for many years, she was a homemaker.

On Feb. 4, 1973, she married Chester Leroy Vanazia at Dodge City. He died Feb. 6, 2001.

Survivors include: four sons, Richard "Rick" Price, Forgan, Okla.; Arron "Buzzie" Price, Meade, Lester Price Jr., Dodge City, and Jerry Price, Irrigon, Ore.; three daughters, Agnes Sharp, Apache Junction, Ariz., Wanda Price, Mesa, Ariz., and Carla L. Ellis, Columbus, Ohio; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Graveside memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Graceland Cemetery, Meade, with Father Ted Skalsky presiding. Cremation has taken place.

Memorials may be sent to Rebekah Lodge of Dodge City, in care of Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade.

Judith K. Fenton
NEWTON - Judith K. Fenton, 61, died Jan. 5, 2005, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

She was born April 16, 1943, at Newton, the daughter of Lewis and Ruth Abrahams Fenton. A resident of Newton, she was a retired nurses aide for the state of Texas.

She married Allan LaForme. He died in January 2003.

Survivors include: three sisters, Eunice Barricklow, Moundridge, Joyce Miller, Marshall, Mo., and Ruth Adams, McClellanville, S.C.; 12 nephews and nieces; and 12 great-nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Gerald Fenton; a sister, Maxine Veneris-Wilson; and three nephews.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel, Newton, with the Rev. Phil Fisher presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Eastlawn Cemetery, rural Hesston, at a later date.

Memorials may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, in care of the funeral home, 215 North Main, Newton, KS 67114.

Harold F. Cline
VICTORIA - Harold F. Cline, 80, died, Jan. 6, 2005, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 30, 1924, at Maple Hill, the son of James P. and Serena Brunner Cline. He graduated from Havensville High School in 1941. He attended the College of Mortuary Science at St. Louis and Cleveland. A resident of Paola and Kansas City, Mo., before moving to Victoria in 1960, he was a funeral director and embalmer for more than 50 years, owning and operating Cline's Mortuary, Hays and Victoria.

He belonged to St. Fidelis Catholic Church, the Kansas Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association, Hays American Legion and the Victoria VFW, serving as past commander. He was a member of Victoria Knights of Columbus 3rd and 4th Degree Assembly.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II.

On Dec. 28, 1950, he married Carol Jane McCullough at Paola. She survives.

Other survivors include: five sons, Craig, Sterling, Chris, Gorham, Kevin, Mulvane, Kirk "Cookie, " Hays and Carl, Lawrence; a daughter, Cindy Ubert, Overland Park; two brothers, John, Havensville, and Paul, Oklahoma City; and 19 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jimmy and Maurice Cline; and a sister, Gloria Lewis.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Victoria. Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, followed by a Knights of Columbus 3rd and 4th degree rosary with the VFW joining at 7:30 p.m. at Cline's Mortuary, Victoria. Knights of Columbus 4th Degree will stand honor guard from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, 1 to 9 p.m. Monday and 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, all at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Fidelis Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Victoria VFW.

Memorials may be sent to St. Fidelis Catholic Church or to the Hays Medical Center Foundation, in care of the funeral home.
