Anna Merle Curtis
ST. JOHN - Anna Merle Curtis, 101, died Oct. 7, 2004, at Stafford District Hospital.

She was born July 20, 1903, at rural St. John, the daughter of Charles and Bertrude Burnett Curtis. She received her teaching degree from Emporia State Teachers' College. A resident of Stafford, she was a schoolteacher for several country schools in Stafford County.

She belonged to Antrim United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: a brother, Raymond, Great Bend; two sisters, Maxine Brehm, Pratt, and Margie Burke, Dodge City; and 14 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: two brothers, Randall and Ronald.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Minnis Chapel, St. John, with the Rev. Michael Schotte presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday at the chapel. Burial will be in Fairview Park Cemetery, St. John.

Memorials may be sent to Antrim United Methodist Church in care of the chapel.

James William Jost
HARPER - James William Jost, 77, died Oct. 7, 2004, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born March 2, 1927, at Langley, the son of William J. and Gladys Gomer Jost. A resident of Harper since 1987, moving from Attica, where he resided since 1954, he owned and operated Jost Construction, a dirt contracting business, for many years until his retirement in 1985. Later, he was sexton of Attica Cemetery.

He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. After leaving the Navy, he joined the Coast Guard.

On June 12, 1947, he married Irma June Fredricks at Jacksonville, Fla. She died in February 1985. Later, on Oct. 28, 1987, he married Kathryn L. Bottorff at Branson, Mo. She survives.

Survivors include: two daughters, Kitty Loesch, Attica, and Judy Jost, Harper; two brothers, Dale, Syracuse, and Gary, Pawnee Rock; a sister, Erika Marlene Hedberg, Marquette; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: two brothers, Warren and Roy.

Memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Funeral Home Chapel, Harper.

Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association, both in care of the funeral home.

Carole A. Reimer
WALTON - Carole A. Reimer, 66, died Oct. 8, 2004, at Cherry Creek Village, Wichita.

She was born Oct. 13, 1937, at Fall River, the daughter of Clarence and Vesper Jorgenson Blanck. A resident of Walton, she was a retired medical assistant, last working at Newton Presbyterian Manor.

She belonged to Burns United Methodist Church, Burns.

Survivors include: three daughters, Debbie Howell, Benton, Mary Myers, Burns, and Linda Robinson, Florence; a stepson, John D. Reimer, Leawood; three stepdaughters, LaVonne Reimer, Newton, Verda Brenner, Midwest City, Okla., and Sara Reimer, El Dorado; a brother, Vernon Blanck, Houston; a sister, Thelma Silver, Wichita; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, John Reimer; her parents; and a brother, Raymond Blanck.

Funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel, Newton. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Newton.

Memorials may be sent to the Reimer Family Fund, in care of the funeral home.

James A. Reinert
JOHNSON - James A. Reinert, 33, died Oct. 6, 2004, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, Wichita, as the result of an automobile accident.

He was born Nov. 10, 1970, at Colby, the son of Dennis and Angie Reinert. He was a resident of rural Johnson, previously of Lamar, Colo.

Survivors include: his wife, Michelle, of the home; two stepsons, Tony and Vidal Montoya, Johnson; his parents, Lamar, Colo.; a brother, Wayne, Cortez, Colo.; a sister, Anna Marie Hudgins, Johnson; paternal grandmother, Anna C. Reinert, Hoxie; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Darryl.

Rosary/scripture service will be at 7 p.m. MDT Sunday at St. Francis de Sales/Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Lamar, Colo., with Deacon Henry Wertin presiding. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at the church, with the Rev. Anthony Wojcinski celebrating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery, Lamar. Visitation will be from 12 to 5 p.m. MDT Sunday at Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel, Lamar, and prior to the rosary/scripture service and funeral mass at the church.

Memorials may be sent to James Reinert Memorial Fund in care of the funeral chapel.

Henrietta 'Henny' Ross
HAYS - Henrietta "Henny" Ross, 81, died Oct. 7, 2004, at Hays Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 3, 1923, at Hays, the daughter of John M. and Anna Klaus Eberle. A resident of Hays, she worked for Ben Franklin for 24 years and was a Senior Companion for 14 years.

She belonged to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays.

On Dec. 22, 1942, she married Wilfred Ross at Hays. He died April 6, 1974.

Survivors include: two daughters, Sandra Galliardt, Hutchinson, and Janet McAdoo, Russell; a sister, Doris Boos, Hays; five grandsons; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: two brothers, Leo and Robert Eberle; and two sisters, Mae Bender and Alice Cunningham.

Parish vigil service will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 9:45 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.

Memorials may be sent to the church for masses in care of the funeral home.

Carrie Alma Paulsen Rowe
BAZINE - Carrie Alma Paulsen Rowe, 98, died Oct. 7, 2004, at Ness County Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born Sept. 6, 1906, on a farm near Stafford, the daughter of Hans Christian and Kate Morford Paulsen. She received her early education in a rural school and graduated from Stafford High School in 1925. She received a degree in Vocational Home Economics in 1929 from Kansas State Agricultural College, now Kansas State University. Her teaching career began that fall at Bazine High School.

She lived a long and active life until the last month, living on her own, loving to cook and bake, trying out new recipes, enjoying gardening, sewing and taking part in activities at the church and Golden Years Center. She was known for her dinner and cinnamon rolls and was often asked to provide them at various functions.

She was a 75-year member of Bazine United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school for over 60 years. Serving in various offices at church, she also had been a sponsor for Methodist Youth Fellowship. A faithful member, she seldom missed church services. A community 4-H leader for over 10 years, she belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma, a teacher's organization. As a breast cancer survivor, she volunteered for American Cancer Society, counseling women in Ness County who had undergone similar surgery. Many people were touched by Carrie's love and concern.

In May 2004, when Bazine High School held its last graduation ceremonies before closing its doors, she was invited to speak as the oldest living teacher. Her presentation drew a standing ovation. Again, in August, she was honored to be co-Marshall in the parade preceding the Bazine Picnic.

She met and married a local farmer, Harry Everett Rowe, June 9, 1932, at Bazine. To this union, three daughters were born, twins, Jane and Joan and later a third daughter, Carol.

Survivors include: three daughters, Jane Schwartzkopf Blount, and husband, Joel, Surprise, Ariz., Joan Kendrick, and husband, Joe, Edmond, Okla., and Carol Park, and husband, Dick, Overland Park; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, in 1990; a son-in-law, Alvin Schwartzkopf, in 1993; her parents; two brothers, Fred and his twin, Harry; and a sister, Clara Woodden.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church, Bazine, with Pastor Deb Harvey presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with family receiving friends from 4 to 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City. Burial will be in Bazine Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the church, Golden Years Center or Hospice of the Prairie, Dodge City, all in care of the funeral home.

Holly M. Martin
WICHITA - Holly M. Martin, 49, died Oct. 6, 2004.

She worked as a social worker.

Survivors include: six brothers.

Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Baha'i Center, Wichita.

Downing and Lahey Mortuary West, Wichita, is in charge of arrangements.

Marvin H. Wiechman
SCOTT CITY - Marvin H. Wiechman, 81, died Oct. 7, 2004, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health, Topeka.

He was born Aug. 20, 1923, at Garden Plain, the son of John and Hilda Koch Wiechman. A resident of Scott City since 1929, moving from Garden Plain, he spent his life as a dryland and irrigation farmer.

He was a Little League baseball coach, coaching several teams to regional and state tournaments. He was a 4-H leader and received KBA Soil Conservation Award as Outstanding Farmer. He was a lifelong member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Scott City and served as Sunday school superintendent for more than 20 years. He served on Kansas Corn Commission and was a member of Kansas Farm Bureau Association.

On Aug. 5, 1945, he married Helen Jean Harkness. She died Sept. 8, 1967. On Feb. 25, 1968, he married Sally Jean Anderson at Whitewood, S. D. She died Nov. 5, 2002.

Survivors include: three sons, Steven R., Stanley W. and Todd J., all of Topeka; two daughters, Peggy J. Janssen, Manhattan, and Tracy L. Schmutzler, Topeka; two brothers, Gerald and Don, Scott City; three sisters, Luella Erskin, La Vera King and Velda Riddiough, all of Scott City; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Martin; and a sister, Geneva Faurot.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Warren Prochnow presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, both at Price and Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Memorials may be sent to the church or Alzheimer's disease research, both in care of the funeral home.

Rhoda M. Ramer
HARPER - Rhoda M. Ramer, 86, died Oct. 13, 2004, at Harper Hospital.

She was born Oct. 22, 1917, in York County, Pa., the daughter of Enos and Anna Gehman Martin. A Harper resident, she was a homemaker and school teacher, having taught at the Pleasant Valley and Freeport schools.

She belonged to Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church and WMSC - the church sewing circle - and she taught a Sunday school class for the youth.

On Oct. 15, 1950, she married Elmer Ramer at Lancaster, Pa. He survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Stephen, Washington D.C., and Everett Ramer, Pittsburgh, Pa.; a daughter, Lois Gulin, Wichita; a brother; four sisters; and four grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church, Harper. Interment will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Harper.

Memorials may be sent to Mennonite Mission Network, in care of Elliott Funeral Home, Harper.
