Peggy Osterhaus

Peggy Osterhaus, 62, of Seneca, died Sunday, October 7, 2007 at her home.
She was born on August 27, 1945 in Seneca, the daughter of Suitbert and Elizabeth Hutfles Stallbaumer. She lived on the family farm south of Corning for 10 years, before the family moved into Corning. Peggy attended the Corning School and graduated in 1963.
Peggy married Elmer J. Osterhaus on September 4, 1965 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Corning, KS.
The couple lived in Kansas City for one year and then moved to Seneca. Shortly after coming to Seneca, they moved to Oneida for a few years before coming back to Seneca.Peggy was a devoted mother who raised two talented children. Once her children were grown, she went to work as a cook for the Seneca Grade School for four years. In 1996, she started working at Little Britches Day Care Center. In 2000, Peggy was hired by Harsh Drug Store in Seneca. When the drug store sold to Pamida, she continued her employment until her death.
Peggy enjoyed traveling, especially visiting her son in Alaska. In her free time, she took pleasure in fishing, quilting, and being outdoors. She was a dedicated grandmother who treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren.
Peggy was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca and St. Ann’s Altar Society.
Survivors besides her husband Elmer are her son Michael Osterhaus of Wasilla, AK; her daughter Patricia White of Grain Valley, MO; five brothers, Ervan of Tulsa, OK, John of Hoyt, Lester of Holton, James of Cincinnati, OH, and Michael of Paola, KS; and four sisters, Mary Ann Grollmes of Netawaka, KS, Lucille Eisenbarth and Barbara Osterhaus, both of Seneca, and Janice Jenkins of Paola, KS.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 A.M. Wednesday, October 10, at Sts. Peter & Paul in Seneca. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Rosaries will be prayed on Tuesday at 2 & 7 PM at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
Memorials have been designated for Sts. Peter & Paul School.

Loretta B. Otting

Loretta B. Otting, 97, of Seneca, died late Tuesday evening, January 20, 2004, at Country View Estates Care Home in Seneca. She had been a resident there since September of 1993 when she suffered a broken hip.
She was born June 4, 1906, on a farm north of Seneca, the daughter of August and Theresia Menke Haverkamp. Loretta grew up there, graduated from St. Mary’s Grade School in 1922, and helped on the family farm. When the family moved to Fall City, NE, she did domestic work there for a short time before the family moved back to St. Benedict.
She married Lawrence Otting at St. Mary’s Church, St. Benedict on January 2, 1929. They lived on a farm in the Ford Community southeast of Seneca for a year. They bought a farm east of Seneca along Highway 36, where they lived almost 58 years. They raised chickens, hogs, geese, a variety of cows, and had horses. In 1986 they moved to Seneca. Her husband died April 23, 1988.
She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church and St. Ann’s Altar Society at the church. Loretta helped her neighbors by taking care of their children while they worked outside their homes. She also enjoyed gardening and always had one of her homemade pies and ice cream ready when you visited her. She enjoyed living in town, visiting her neighbors, and walking around town.
Survivors are a son Jerry Otting, Bonner Springs; two daughters, Alice Seitz, St. Mary’s, and Jeannette Toby, Seneca; two sisters, Alma Clark, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Cecelia Forst, Decatur, GA; 23 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren, and 4 step-great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert, on April 19, 1993; a daughter, Donna Koehler, on July 29, 1995; a grandson, Joe Seitz, on January 7, 1989; a great-granddaughter, Katherine Grace Otting, in 1998; a brother, Elmer Haverkamp, and three sisters, Rose Koelzer, Marcella Haug and Luella Haverkamp.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. The burial will be in the church cemetery. A prayer service will be conducted on Friday at 7 P.M. at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
Memorials may be given for Country View or for Sts. Peter & Paul School and sent in care of the family.

Violet I. Painter

Violet I. Painter Baker, 97, died Thursday October 5, 2000 at St. Lukes Northland Hospital, Kansas City, MO.
She was born December 15, 1902 at Onaga, KS. She had been an actress in the early years of movies in Hollywood. She and her daughter Gloria Barnett (pen name Gloria Elmore) were involved in writing scripts and acting in several TV shows, including Hawaii Five-O. For the past several years she had lived in Kansas City, MO near her surviving nephew Bill Painter.
Private graveside services were held Friday afternoon October 6, 2000 at Onaga Cemetery, Onaga, KS.

Janice W. Palmer

Janice W. Palmer, 96, of Sabetha died on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha.
Janice Winifred Kehler was born on August 17, 1917, at Moorcraft, WY to Leonard Howard and Theresa Viols Penn Kehler. When Janice was three the family moved back to Kansas, and lived for many years in Nemaha, Brown and Jackson counties. She attended schools in this area, and Wetmore and graduated from Fairview High School in 1936. She then taught school in both Nemaha and Jackson counties.
She married Ray Bunce Palmer on June 15, 1940 at McPherson, Kansas. They returned to the Sabetha area, where they resided for their retired married life. Bunce died in Jan 16, 1986.
Janice earned a LPN certificate from Kaw Valley Technical Institute in Topeka Kansas in 1968. She worked for numerous years at the Sabetha Community Hospital, and for several nursing homes in Sabetha and Hiawatha.
She and Bunce enjoyed traveling and did so extensively with trips to Europe, Canada, Pacific NW and many winters in Texas, Louisiana and Florida. Janice lived in Louisiana for several years. Hobbies include reading, movies of all kinds, and she was an avid cruciverbalist.
Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Virginia; son-in-law, Gene Sherrard; sisters-in-law, Ina Rokey, Betty Daley, Phyllis Fox and Caroline Walton; her four brothers; a granddaughter, Jolie Palmer; an infant grandson, Steven Roy Palmer; and five nieces and nephews.
The couple had three children, who survive, Steven (Susan) Bunce of Boulder, Colorado, Gwen Ellen Sherrard, Elm Grove, LA and Ann Louise (Jim) Stewart, Hollywood, FL; sisters, Laurel Hutchinson of Freeport, Ill, Rosemary Lentz of N. Little Rock, AR; sister-in-law, Shirley Kehler of Topeka, KS; five grandchildren, Toyna Sherrard of Elm Grove, LA, Richard Sherrard of Council Bluffs, IA, Mary Jan Harris of Palm City, FL, Jennifer Barberio of Clayton, CA and Tina Millhollin of Lakewood, CO; six step-grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren; 11 step great- grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and three step-great-great grandchildren; and 18 nieces and nephews.
An announcement of a remembrance service will be forthcoming.

Joan M. "Babe" Palmer

Joan M. "Babe" Palmer, 74, of Seneca, died early Sunday morning, July 22, 2007, at her daughter Cathy's home south of Sabetha.
Joan was born in Seneca on November 8, 1932, the daughter of Henry and Mary Rethman Enneking. She attended Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School and graduated from high school in 1950.
On February 11, 1956, she married Bernard Palmer in Wichita; they moved to Topeka where they had two daughters, Jodi and Cathy. Before Bernard death's on March 21, 1966, the family moved to Seneca. After becoming a widow, Joan worked as a cook at several area restaurants. Joan then took a job at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital and worked there until her retirement in 1997.
Joan loved spending time with her family. She also took great pleasure in cooking, crocheting and gardening.
Survivors include her daughters and their husbands, Jodi and Lynn Brashwitz, and Cathy and Carl Cannon, all of Sabetha; two sisters, Jerri Huerter of Seneca and Virginia Roggenkamp of Blaine; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ronnie and Robert Enneking, and a great-grandson Bernie.
A rosary was prayed Tuesday evening at the Lauer Funeral Home. Graveside services will be conducted by Father Kent O’Conner at 10 AM Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at Sts. Peter and PaulCemeteryin Seneca.
Memorial contributions may be given for a beneficiary to be named later.

Joan L. Parks

Joan L. Parks, 89, of Seneca, Kansas, died early Wednesday morning, May 9, 2012 at Life Care Center in Seneca.
Joan was born on October 13, 1922 on a farm east of Baileyville to John and Anna Deters Kokenge. She grew up in the Baileyville and Seneca communities. She attended Woodenshoe Country School and graduated from Seneca Public High School in 1940. After school she went to work for Dr. Barnes. For a time she lived in Leavenworth, Kansas. In 1958 she returned to Seneca, and went to work for Farmers Home Administration in Seneca, working there until she retired 1970.
She was married to Lenoel E. "Lee" Parks on July 25, 1970 in Alma, Kansas. The couple then made their home in Silver Lake, until her husband of 30 years preceded her in death in 2000. In 2001, she returned to Seneca.
She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Altar Society and the American Legion Auxiliary in Seneca. She enjoyed playing golf and bridge, doing crossword puzzles and sewing.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lenoel E. Parks on December 19, 2000; a granddaughter, Jennifer Rosengarten on May 22, 1999; and brothers John, Francis and Leander Kokenge.
Joan is survived by a son, Charlie (Jeannie) Rosengarten of Green Valley, Arizona; a daughter, Tonda Rosengarten of Lenexa, Kansas; two brothers, Max Kokenge of Seneca, and Bob Kokenge of Manhattan; and a sister, Mary Kramer of Lincoln, Nebraska; two grandsons, Corey (Jessica) Rosengarten and Casey Rosengarten; and a great-grandson Akahi.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 AM Friday, May 11, at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A rosary will be prayed at 7 PM Thursday, May 10, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
Memorials may be given in Joan's memory for the Life Care Center, and sent in care of the family.

Lenoel E. Parks

Lenoel E. "Lee" Parks, 72, of Silver Lake, Kansas, formerly of Seneca, Kansas, died suddenly Tuesday, December 19, in Brownsville, Texas. His death was due to an apparent heart attack.
Lee was born June 3, 1928 in Pomona, Kansas, the son of Vernon and Beth Kuebler Parks. He grew up there and graduated from Pomona High School in 1946. In 1950 he graduated from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, with a degree in agriculture. He farmed near Pomona before going to work for the F.H.A. In 1955 he moved to Seneca where he was employed by the F.H.A. as the county supervisor. He moved to Silver Lake in 1970 where he worked for the F.H.A. in Topeka specializing in rural water departments making loans and other business plans. Lee retired from the F.H.A. in 1993. He later worked for Bartlett and West Engineering Firm in Topeka as a consultant for rural water districts.
He was married to Joan Rosengarten on July 25, 1970 in Alma, Kansas. She survives of the home. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Pomona.
He was a member of the Grand Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Kansas, and the McKinley Lodge #41 at Pomona. He was a member of the Lion's Club at Pomona, Seneca, and Silver Lake. He had served on the Library Board in Silver Lake. He was issued a pilot's license in August of 1965, had club ownership in several planes, and was a member of the EAA Warbirds of America Squadron 14 at Forbes Air Force Base. He did volunteer work and helped with the air show. He enjoyed playing golf and fishing. He liked gardening and had a "green thumb."
Survivors besides his wife, Joan, are a stepson, Charles Rosengarten of Bern, Kansas; a stepdaughter, Tonda Rosengarten of Lenexa, Kansas; two brothers, John V. Parks of Overland Park, Kansas and James Parks of Pomona; and two step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a step granddaughter, Jennifer Rosengarten on May 22, 1999.
Funeral Services will be 10 A.M. Saturday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The burial will be in Sts. Peter & PaulCemeteryat Seneca. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 7 P.M.
Memorials may be given for the Seneca Golf Club and sent in care of the family.
