Peggy Maxine Bachman

CLAFLIN - Peggy Maxine (Churchman) Bachman died Aug. 16 in Hutchinson surrounded by her family. She was born June 9, 1925, in Parkerville, the daughter of Lee William and Mary G. (Molly) Barber Churchman. She graduated from Parkerville High School in 1942 and worked as a payroll clerk at Ft. Riley. She attended Kansas State Teacher's College at Emporia where she was a member of the Omega Literary Society, Future Teachers of America and Delta Sigman Epsilon Sorority. She received her Life Teaching Certificate in 1945. She married Albert George Bachman on Oct. 23, 1945, in Parkerville. He died Oct. 13, 2004. After marriage they moved to Yuba City, Calif. where she taught in the Yuba City school system for 2.5 years. In 1952, they returned to make their home in Hutchinson. The family also lived in Tempe, Ariz., and South Hutchinson before moving to Claflin in 1969. The family enjoyed camping, boating and fishing and were members of the Salt Shaker Camping Club. In their retirement years they spent most winters in Texas. She enjoyed all kinds of needlework, quilting and crafts. Each grandchild and great-grandchild has a quilt that she made especially for him or her with loving hands. She was a devoted full time wife, mother and homemaker. Her family was her greatest joy. After the children were older, she did substitute teaching in the Hutchinson area and worked in the Interlibrary Loan Department at the Hutchinson Public Library and for Dr. Elywn Shonyo in Claflin. Mrs. Bachman was a member of the Parkerville Community Church, the Barton County Community College Faculty Wives and the Claflin Garden Club. She attended the Methodist Church in Claflin. Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Frances and her husband Mike Underwood of Tribune; three sons, Albert Bruce Bachman and his wife Betty of Hutchinson, Thomas George Bachman and his wife Rosemary of Lakin and Daniel Lee Bachman and his wife Marie of Susank; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, Ted and Brandi Underwood, Austin and Jacob of Garden City, Gina and Dewayne Bond of Tribune, Chuck and Jennifer Underwood, Chelsey and Bailey of Salina, Matthew and Andrea Bachman and Derek of Hutchinson, Sarah and Daniel Oubre, Natalie and Allison of Hutchinson, Zachary Bachman and fiancee Haylea England of Hutchinson, Heather and Brad Schuerman, Piper, Tatum and Margo of Lenexa, Molly and Danny Shelden, Ian, Ben and Leo of Lakin, Jenni and Travis Klienow of Edwardsville; and one brother William L. Churchman and his wife Frances of Pahrump, Nev. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at NicholsonRicke Funeral Home in Hoisington with the Rev. Mike Underwood presiding. Burial will be at 3 p.m. on Monday at Parkerville cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. on Sunday and from 9 a.m. to service time on Monday at the funeral home. Marguerite Yochum
1916 - 2006
KIOWA - Marguerite Yochum, 90, died Aug. 17. She was born July 7, 1916, in Woods County, Okla., the daughter of Henry and Edith Campbell Sternberger. She graduated from the Hardtner High School in 1934. She married George Richard Yochum on Nov. 26, 1938, at Enid, Okla. He died on Sept. 11, 1980. They lived in the Hardtner community farming and raising cattle until their retirement in 1969 when they moved to Kiowa. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Yochum was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hardtner, where she was the pianist. Upon moving to Kiowa she transferred her membership to the United Methodist Church of Kiowa. Survivors include: two daughters, Kathleen McCarty, Great Bend, and Linda Dyck, Tampa; step-son Richard Yochum, San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Hazel Pflieder and Neva Wilhite, both of Alva, Okla.; five grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and two step-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Jean McClaflin; two sons-in-law, Mac McClaflin and Dwight Long; two brothers, Wayne Sternberger and Glen Sternberger; and one sister, Naurine Spencer. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Kiowa with the Rev. Wayne Stephens officiating. Burial will follow in the Hardtner-Elwood cemetery. HOISINGTON - Kevin Duane Popp, 39, died at his home in Hoisington on Aug. 14. He was born May 21, 1967 in Hoisington, the son of Duane H. and Cheryl A (Lane) Popp. He was a elementary teacher for USD 428 and a lifetime resident of Hoisington and Great Bend. He graduated from Hoisington High School in 1985 and from Fort Hays State University with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. He was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hoisington, Kansas National Education Association, National Education Association and former member of Eureka Homesteaders 4-H and Hoisington Jaycees. Survivors include his parents of Hoisington; one sister, Sheila Merritt and husband Ross of Hays; one nephew, Justin Gallentine; and one niece Jacqueline Gallentine. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Pastor Richard Monson officiating. Burial will be at the Hoisington cemetery. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home and 9:30 a.m. until time of service on Saturday at the church. The casket will remain closed. Bill Dean Williams
1921 - 2006
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Bill D. Williams, formerly of Eufaula, Okla., passed away on Sunday, Aug. 13, in Oklahoma City, Okla., at the age of 85. He was born July 12, 1921, in Wewoka, Okla., the son of Jesse J. and Georgia (Menefee) Williams. Williams served his country in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a P-38 pilot, escorting B-29 bombers over Italy. His plane was shot down during a mission and he was held as a prisoner of war for 10 months in a German prison camp. He also flew P-51's during the Korean War. He worked many years at FAA Aeronautical Center in Oklahoma City, as a budget/accounting officer, and earned the nickname of 'Fuss Budget.' He retired in 1981. He was an avid fisherman and loved to bird hunt, especially quail. He also enjoyed woodworking, Western movies and books and family gatherings. Survivors include his son Dean Staley and his daughter Diedra Dee Staley, both of Honolulu, Hawaii; two brothers, Bobby Joe Williams and wife Melanie of Yukon, Okla., and Billy Ray McCombs and wife Phyllis of Tulsa, Okla.; his sister Dorris Bitting and husband, J.L. of Muskogee, Okla. He also leaves to mourn a special friend, Darlene Valentin of Eufaula, Okla., as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, James Morris Staley. WICHITA - Rodney K. Sweetman, 74, died Aug. 12. Survivors include his wife Geneva of the home; one son Adam Sweetman and his wife Suzanne Matthews of Wichita; two daughters, Suzanne Hanson and her fiancé Mike Buchanan, and Sarah and her husband Kevin Sisney, all of Wichita; nine grandchildren, Beth and JJ Buchanan, Madeline Matthews-Janzen, Sophie and Jack Hanson, Eva Kate Sisney, Connor Sweetman, Maia Lyn and Hugh Sisney; one sister, Tammy D. Scheuerman of Fayetteville, Ark; one aunt, Mary Dorr of Edmond, Okla.; and many cousins. Rosary was on Monday. William Joel "Jody" Ditus
1944-2006
William Joel '˜Jody' Ditus, 62, died Aug. 14 at his home in Great Bend. He was born July 5, 1944, at Wichita, the son of William Carl and Dorothy Moore Ditus. He married Leanda Ehly on April 23, 1994, at Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1984, coming from Burdett, he was employed by Dillons and most recently by Sunflower Diversified Services. He attended First Southern Baptist Church and was a member of the Special Olympics, Venture Crew (Adult Boy Scouts of America Scouting Program), AKTION Kiwanis Club, and Sunflower Self-Advocacy Group at the local and state levels. Survivors include his wife of the home; a sister Patricia Bauer of McPherson; and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Dr. Doyle Smith officiating. Burial will be at Lyons cemetery in Lyons. WICHITA - Alexander D. Gardner, 7 months, died Aug. 9 in Wichita. He was born Dec. 23, 2005, in Wichita, the son of Eric and Shelly Gardner. Viola Vera Watkins

Viola Vera Watkins, 83, died Aug. 10 at Hospice House of Reno County in Hutchinson. She was born July 22, 1923, in Otis, the daughter of Frank J. and Pauline Serpan Suchy. She married Cherster R. Watkins on Nov. 27, 1943, at LaCrosse. She lived most of her life in Great Bend and was a homemaker. Mrs. Watkins was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Alter Society of Great Bend. Survivors include: Her husband of the home; four daughters, Ruth Weber of Great Bend, Charlotte Lackey of Blue Springs, Mo., Sandy Byers of Hutchinson, and Pam Davidson of Rogers, Ark.; 11 grandchildren; five step-children; and 18 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by: A son, Gerald Dean Watkins; six brothers, Frank Suchy, Elmer Suchy, Joe Suchy, Vernon Suchy, Freddie Suchy and Al Suchy; and one great-grandson. Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m. and Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m. both today at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. MCPHERSON - Jolene K. 'Joey' Keister, 56, died Aug. 9 at her home in McPherson. She was born Sept. 4, 1949, in Bazine, the daughter of Herman Frances Rein and Martha Herman. She married Sam G. Keister on June 7, 1969, at Bazine. She was employed at the N.C.R.A Refinery in the safety and training department. She was a resident of McPherson since 1979 coming from El Dorado and Plainville. Mrs. Keister was a member of Countryside Covenant Church. She graduated from Bazine High School in 1967. Survivors include her husband Sam of the home; two daughters Kris Rensner of Effingham, Ill., and Amy Bower of Olathe; two brothers, Ray Rein of Ness City and J.D. Rein of Great Bend; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday at Countryside Covenant Church, with the Rev. Tim Holgerson officiating. Beryl June Shriner

Beryl June Shriner, 69, of Great Bend, died Aug. 9 at Alterra Sterling House in Great Bend. She was born on Feb. 1, 1937, at Geneseo, the daughter of Nelson Emery and Mildred June Moore Shriner. A resident of Great Bend since 1966, coming from Geneseo, she was a school teacher for 42 years. She was employed by USD 428 for 35 years, also teaching in Kensington and Geneso. Beryl Shriner was a member of First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, the Kansas Anthropological Association, Barton County Retired Teachers Association and Santa Fe Trail Association. Survivors include two brothers, James W. Shriner and wife Joyce of Geneso and David R. Shriner and wife Kay of Moody, Texas; four sisters, Esther Jarvis of Salina, Belva Jean Lightner and husband Bill of Solomon, Carol Y. Phelps and husband Larry of New Braunsfel, Texas, and Joyce A. Mullen and husband Bob of Geneseo; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Jerry Shriner, a sister Doris M. Mallein, a nephew Mark Phelps and a niece Judy Rosetta. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. Burial will be at noon at Geneseo cemetery in Geneso. Georgia B. Wehling

DORRANCE - Georgia B. Wehling, 71, died Aug. 7, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center in Wichita. She was born July 19, 1935, in Moundridge, Kansas, the daughter of Gus and Goldie Belle (Salmons) Cox. She married Max Wehling on Nov. 1, 1953, in Galsburg, Kansas. He died in 1986. She was a production worker at ABCO in Russell for over 20 years and was a lifetime resident of the Dorrance/Ellsworth area. Mrs. Wehling was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wilson, United Christian Women of Wilson and a Church Youth Group sponsor. Survivors include two sons, Larry Wehling of Grand Junction, Colo., and Ron Wehling of Russell; one daughter, Barbara Canon of Great Bend; one sister, Juanita Wilkerson of Parsons; one brother Virgil Cox of Thayer; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday at the church with Pastor Kris Bair officiating. Burial will be at the Dorrance City cemetery. Douglas L. Sillin
1953 - 2006
STERLING - Douglas L. Sillin, 52, died Aug. 9, at his residence in Sterling. He was born Sept. 14, 1953, in Hutchinson, the son of Virgil T. and Marian A. LeRoy Sillin. He graduated from Sterling High School on 1971, graduated from Pratt Junior College in 1973. He attended Sterling College, and Kansas State University, graduating from Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science in 1977. He married Christine M. Desbien Irick on June 16, 2001, in Sterling. She survives of f the home. He was a resident of Sterling since 1960, and the owner and president of Sillin Funeral Homes and Granite Memorials of Sterling and Lyons. Mr. Sillin was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lyons. He started his funeral career at the age of 14 with his parents in Sterling. He was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, Kansas Funeral Directors Association, former president and board member of the Chamber of Commerce in Sterling, Lyons Chamber of Commerce, and Sterling High School booster club. He was an avid basketball fan, having played at Sterling High School where he still holds the highest single-game scoring record and at Pratt Junior College where he played on a basketball scholarship and Sterling College. Survivors include, his wife Chrsitine, four daughters, Katie J. Sillin of the home, Jaclyn Dewey and husband Joel of Ellinwood, Jenifer Scheck and husband Clint of Middlebury, Ind., Samantha Irick of Lawrence; father Virgil T. Sillin of Hutchinson; three sisters Nancy Brown of Greeley, Colo., Maryann Bundy of Manhattan, Lana Sillin of Hutchinson; and two nephews Shad Brown of Greeley, Colo., and Mac Brothers of Lyons. He was preceded in death by his mother Marian Sillin, and brother David Sillin. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Untied Methodist Church in Lyons with the Rev. Dr. Quentin Bennett and Rev. Cindy Watson presiding. Burial will be at the Sterling Community cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Sillin Funeral Home in Sterling. He was preceded in death by his wife Edith. Kenneth "Bush" Cheney
WICHITA - Kenneth 'Bush' Cheney, 83, died Aug. 8. Cheney was a retired Fleming Foods warehouseman. Survivors include, two sons, James and Dan Cheney, two brothers, Jerry and Cecil Cheney, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Aileen Ruth in 1983 and three brothers Harold, Eugene, and Raymond Cheney Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday with visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, both at Lakeview Funeral Home in Wichita. Bette Jean Moses
Bette Jean Moses, devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and dear friend, passed away on July 18, 2006, in Sun City West, Arizona, following a long battle with breast cancer. She is survived by her husband, Edward, son Kirk Rodgers and his wife Vicki; daughter Joell Rodgers Ireland; stepsons Edward Moses (IV), James Moses; stepdaughters Nancy Moses, Jessica Harrison and her husband Steve; sisters Mary Bonnewell and Billie Forney, brother Kirk Swingle, 14 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Bet was born in Blackwell, Oklahoma to Walter and Mary Jane Swingle. She held a BA degree with post graduate work in fine arts and taught school in Oklahoma City and Great Bend, Kansas. Following her marriage to Ed, she left teaching to pursue her art work and within a short time became an accomplished artist. She had numerous exhibits in Kansas and several of her paintings were selected for exhibits in New York City, the Nelson Art Museum in Kansas City, Missouri, and the American Artists in Paris exhibit in 1975, in Paris, France. \ Bet was curator of her own art gallery in Great Bend for more than 10 years. The gallery promoted the work of talented artists throughout the state. She formed Art Inc. in Great Bend, Kansas, in 1971 with the purpose of supporting and encouraging other artists. Bet had many passions in life and continued to pursue many of them after moving to Arizona in the late 1980s. Following concern about ongoing negative rhetoric and bashing of our leaders, she formed the Hillary Rodham Clinton Fan Club in Arizona which was a support network for the then First Lady. Bet loved to entertain, kept a journal of every party she ever hosted and is the author of Party Pizzazz, a book on entertaining. In 1998; she helped found the now annual Rally for a Cure Golf Tournament at Briarwood country club in Sun City West to raise support for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. A memorial celebration was held on Saturday, July 29, in Scottsdale, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Susan G.
