HOISINGTON - WC 'Jerb' Ogle, 82, died Sept. 30 at Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita. He was born Oct. 7, 1923, in Crosbyton, Texas, to Charlie Clinton and Hazel (Hancock) Ogle. He married Edith M. Messex on Dec. 27, 1945, in Great Bend. She died May 12, 1998. A resident of Hoisington since 1945, he was a retired tool pusher for Red Tiger Drilling. Ogle was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Russell Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6240. Survivors include two sons, WC Ogle Jr. and Charles Ogle, both from Hoisington; one daughter, Linda Linsner from Hoisington; two brothers, Wesley Earl Ogle from Odessa, Texas, and Oma Ogle from Plano, Texas; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Charlie Clinton Ogle Jr., Alvin Franklin Ogle, Olen Ogle and Rolen Ogle; and four sisters, Lena Mae Abney, Pauline Hancock, Ollie Beatrice Hancock and Nomah Phillips. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington with Rev. Dick Ogle officiating. Burial will be at the Hoisington cemetery. Friends may visit from 9 a.m. until service time today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Clara Barton Foundation or American Heart Association in care of the funeral home. Dora Jean Applegate
1932 - 2006
Dora Jean Applegate, 74, of Great Bend, died Sept. 30 at Central Kansas Medical Center at Great Bend. She was born Sept. 12, 1932, at Great Bend, the daughter of Everett Allen and Mary Elsie Neisler Smith. She married Robert (Bob) Eugene Applegate on May 21, 1953, at Great Bend. He died Nov. 26, 2005. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, she was a housewife and mother. Survivors include three sons, Robert Lynn Applegate and wife Noreen of Lawrence, Randy Allen Applegate and wife Diane of Shawnee and Ryan Dale Applegate and wife Chawntae of Hebron, Ky.; a daughter, Rhea Schartz and husband Kevin of Ellinwood; a niece, Penny Mauler; three nephews, Mark Newsome, Mike Newsome and Kevin Newsome; and 10 grandchildren, Aaron Schartz, Seth Schartz, Austin Applegate, Logan Applegate, Kaitlyn Applegate, Jill Applegate, Evan Applegate, Morgan Applegate, Riley Applegate and Garret Applegate. She was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Kendall Michael; three sisters, Mary Geraldine Michael, Bonnie Krestin and Arlene Newsome; and a nephew, Bill Helms. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. John Grummon officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to service time on Wednesday, all at the funeral home. CHASE - Luz Martin Martinez, 42, died Sept. 29 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. He was born Nov. 12, 1963, at Mission, Texas, the son of Roman and Celsa Idrogo Martinez. He married Lola Meyers on Oct. 21, 2000, in Chase. He lived in Chase one year, coming from Ellinwood. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Christopher Barnes of Denver, Colo., Martin Luz Martinez of Great Bend and Pablo Martinez of the home; three daughters, Crystal Martinez of Eads, Colo., Maria Mitchell of Great Bend and Kimberly Martinez of the home; three grandchildren; his father Roman Martinez of Springfield, Colo.; and his birth mother, Suzie Celsa Vasquez of Walsh, Colo. He was preceded in death by his mother, Celsa Martinez. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Friday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery in Great Bend. Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. on Thursday and 9 a.m. to service time on Friday at the funeral home, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Halle Lynn Klug
ODIN - Halle Lynn Klug, infant daughter of Gavin and Kiley (Metro) Klug, Odin, died Sept. 29 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Sept. 29, 2006. Survivors include her parents, of the home; maternal grandparents Larry and Deanna Metro, Concordia; maternal great grandparents Fritz and Della Mae Metro, and Dean and Tootie McCall, all of Concordia; paternal grandparents John and Linda Klug, Odin; paternal great grandparents Anna Klug and the late Leo Klug, Odin, and Donna Maxwell and the late Tom Maxwell, Pawnee Rock. George S. Ming
1927 - 2006
George S. Ming, 78, of Great Bend, joined his beloved wife in heaven on Sept. 30 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center's St. Francis Campus in Wichita. He was born Oct. 14, 1927, at Paris, Ark., the son of William Thomas and Okla Highfield Ming. He married Loretta 'Joan' Riegel on Dec. 18, 1948, in Pratt. She died July 5, 2002. A resident of Great Bend for 50 years, coming from Salina, he was self-employed as a general contractor. He was a World War II veteran, serving as a Seaman 1st Class in the U.S. Coast Guard. Ming was a member of Faith Community Church and was an elder and past board member of the church. He was a member of the Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship International and past president of the local chapter. He was a member of Gideons International. He was a Godly man, dedicating his life to his wife and children, and to leading people to Jesus Christ, his personal Lord and Savior. Survivors include a son, Jerry D. Ming, Great Bend; five daughters, Cheryl E. Cogdill, Great Bend, Cynthia J. Lyon, Wichita, Brenda L. Krier, Holiday Island, Ark., Susan K. Parks, Great Bend, and Mary Jane Leshore, Great Bend; three brothers, Hulan Ming, Meriden, Conn., Bill Ming, Little Rock, Ark., and Leon Ming, Little Rock, Ark.; a sister, Jean Boitel, Ft. Smith, Ark.; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by infant triplets, Robert, Ronald and Rita Joan; one sister, Elmeta Ming; and three grandchildren, Brandon, Bradley and Lindsay Jo. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Community Church in Great Bend, with the Rev. Fred Kirkpatrick officiating. Interment with military honors will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Lucille "Lucy" Haas Shaffer

LONG BEACH, CALIF. -Lucille 'Lucy' Haas Shaffer, 72, died Sept. 27 in Long Beach, Calif., after a long battle with cancer. She was born on April 3, 1934, in Hoisington, the daughter of Daniel and Louise Lehning Haas. She married Lyman Shaffer on April 10, 1965, in Long Beach, Calif. Survivors include her husband and two stepchildren, Jeff and Mindy, all of the home; and brother Rufus Haas of Hoisington. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Haas. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in Long Beach on Oct. 16. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Marble Falls, Texas. Kathleen A. Schridde
1929 - 2006
FORSYTH, Mo. - Mrs. Kathleen A. Schridde, 77, passed away on Sept. 28 at her residence in Forsyth, Mo. Kate was born July 8, 1929, in Pratt, the daughter of Olen and Imogene (Schaffer) Dove. Kathleen married Calvin Schridde on Jan. 1, 1949, at Stafford. She ran a beauty shop in Great Bend for many years and was manager of the Twigg Room at Highland Manor, also in Great Bend. In 1996 the family moved to Forsyth, where Kate was a member of the Forsyth Methodist Church and attended the Forsyth Senior Center. She also like to fish and visit with friends. Survivors include her husband Calvin and daughter Brenda Pflughoeft and her husband Charles, all of the home; three sons, Calvin Schridde Jr. and wife Joleen of Great Bend, Randy Schridde and wife Connie of Summerfield, Fla. and David Schridde and wife Sue of Taneyville, Mo.; sister Shirley Edgerton and husband Joe of Baldwin City; 25 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her parents and sister Marylou Bronson. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Monday at the Forsyth Whelchel Chapel in Forsyth. Alvin F. "Al" Befort
1938 - 2006
HUTCHINSON - Alvin F. 'Al' Befort, 67, died Sept. 29 at Galachia Heart Hospital in Wichita. He was born Oct. 3, 1938, at Munjor, the son of Cy and Clara Dreher Befort. He married Vickie Pryor on March 5, 1964, in Manhattan. He had lived in Great Bend, Wichita, Garden City, Mulvane, and, for the last 21 years, in Hutchinson. He was a graduate of Great Bend High School and Fort Hays State University. He was a retail account manager for McKesson for 39 years. Befort was a member of Church of the Holy Cross in Hutchinson. Survivors include his wife, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Allison and Brett Bruch, Mt. Hope, and Lisa and Scott Stross, Hutchinson; two brothers, Keith Befort and wife Annette, and Curt Befort and wife Janice, all of Wichita; two sisters, Nancy McLeary and Wanda Navrid, both of Wichita; four sisters-in-law, Deidre Collier, San Luis Obispo, Calif., Brenda Carpenter, Leavenworth, Lois Befort, Pratt, and Donna Befort, Columbia, Mo.; two grandchildren, Dalton and Samantha Stoss; two step grandchildren, Jacqueline and Jacob Bruch; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by aunts and uncles Joe and Vi Befort, Oklahoma City, Okla., LaVerna and Harold Boger, Wichita, Rita Stewart, Wichita, and Victoria Befort, Great Bend. He was preced in death by his parents, by brothers Jim and Ken Befort, and by a nephew, Jason Befort. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Church of the Holy Cross in Hutchinson with Father Joseph Eckberg presiding. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Elliott Chapel in Hutchinson. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Great Bend cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary. LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Charles Leon Darr, 69, died Nov. 15 in Las Vegas, Nev. He was born April 21, 1937, in Great Bend, the son of Charles Millard Darr and Mildred Irene Darr. Survivors include two daughters, Seema (Danny) Rose and Linda Penrat, both of Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters, Nina L. (William) Scannell of Youngstown, Ohio, and Nancy L. Adams of Great Bend; and one brother, Paul L. Darr of Largo, Fla. He was preceded in death by his wife Karen and brother Ned L. Darr. Cremation has taken place.

Glenn M. Geil
1932 - 2006
PHARR, Texas - Glenn M. Geil, 74, passed away Nov. 28 at Doctors Hospital in Edinburg. He was a native of Great Bend and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean conflict. He was a longtime active member of St. George Orthodox Church in Pharr and an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous. Survivors include his wife, Judith Geil of Pharr; two children, Christopher Earl Geil of Arlington, Texas, and Michelle Geil Naff of Houston; his twin sister, Joan Geil Hicks of Alexandria, Va.; three brothers, Donald Geil of Oklahoma City, Okla., Gene Geil of Silver Springs, Md., and Larry Geil of New Cambria; and three grandchildren, Vivian Geil and Laura and Jessica Naff. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at St. George Orthodox Church on West Sam Houston in Pharr with Father Antonio Perdomo officiating. Graveside services will be held Dec. 2 at Holy ArchAngels Greek Orthodox Monastery in San Antonio, Texas. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to either St. George Orthodox Church, the American Diabetes Association or to the Kidney Foundation. CHASE - Shirley Ann Nicholson, 71, died Nov. 27 at Hutchinson Hospital. She was born Oct. 20, 1935, in Eureka, the daughter of Virgil and Doris Little Stever. She graduated from Hamilton High School in Hamilton. She married Charles Nicholson on Oct. 12, 1956, in Nowata, Okla. She was a resident of Chase since 1971, coming from Sapulpa, Okla. She was a retired head cook for Chase High School. Mrs. Nicholson was a member of Raymond Baptist Church, Raymond, and a former member of Lyons Club in Chase. Survivors include her husband, of the home; two daughters, Sandy Thorton of Russell and Cindy Parsell of Raymond; two brothers, Jimmy Stever of Emporia and Ricky Stever of Eureka; five sisters, Jeannie Burton of Eureka, Connie Hays and Judy Cates, both of Emporia, Sally Gulick of Moran and Nancy Brechiesen of Hartford; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Jerry Stever, and one sister, Kathy Higbee. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church in Raymond with the Rev. Bob Bethell officiating. Clarence Heckens Jr.

Clarence Heckens Jr., 84, died Nov. 27 at his residence in Great Bend. He was born June 9, 1922, in Great Bend, the son of Clarence and Mable Brown Heckens Sr. A resident of Great Bend for many years, he was a truck driver. Heckens was a World War II veteran, serving with the United States Navy. Survivors include his daughter Sherry Lynn; and four half sisters, Helen Hazen, Marie Kern and Mae Brown, all of Great Bend, and Ramona Keenan of Pawnee Rock. He was preceded in death by two sons, Theodore E. Heckens and Clarence Wade Heckens, and one daughter, Betty Lee Heckens. The will be no service or visitation as cremation has taken place. A.J. Ferrell
1916 - 2006
A.J. Ferrell, 90, died Nov. 28 at his home in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 8, 1916, at Dewey County, Okla., the son of Thomas H. and Sally Canady Ferrell. He married Madeline Farris in 1943 and later divorced. He married Thelma Ruth Williams on March 2, 1947. She died July 4, 1983. He married Betty L. Townsend on June 23, 1985, at Great Bend. She survives. He owned and operated A.J. Ferrell Company for more than 30 years. He welded on pipeline across the country including Oklahoma, Wyoming and Illinois. He was a resident of Great Bend since 1953. He helped Red Foley invent oil-related pipe-cleaning equipment. Ferrell was a member of the First Christian Church and a former member of the Church of Christ, both of Great Bend, Masonic Lodge No. 15 York Rite Bodies and Isis Shrine of Salina. Survivors include his wife, Betty, of the home; two sons, Tom Lee Ferrell of Evanston, Wyo., and Jack J. Ferrell of Great Bend; a stepson, Randy Ronell Bombardier and wife Marliss, Richfield, Wash.; two daughters, Virginia Lee Shawver and husband E.B., Augusta, and Marilyn Kay Beal and husband Robert, Farmington, Utah; three stepdaughters, Diane Rae Effertz and husband Hank, Great Bend, Debra Faye Millikan and husband Michael, Salina, and Cindy Lou Dobratz and husband Donald, Dodge City; 19 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Willie Ferrell, Norman Ferrell, Phillip Ferrell and Gene Ferrell, and four sisters, Sybil Foley, Ruby Oller, Allene Fuller and Pauline Breitenbach. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Great Bend, with the Rev. William F. Johnson and the Rev. Dick Ogle officiating. Interment will be at the Great Bend cemetery with Masonic committal rites. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home, with the family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations for First Christian Church or Southwind Hospice may be made in care of the funeral home. OLMITZ - Charles E. Bahr, 84, died Nov. 27 at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend. He was born June 7, 1922, at Olmitz, the son of William F. and Anna M. (Hickey) Bahr. He married Cecilia Beran on Nov. 10, 1942, at Odin. He was a retired farmer and carpenter, and a lifetime resident of Olmitz. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Bahr was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus of Olmitz, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7428, Hoisington, and Eagles Lodge No. 646, Great Bend. Survivors also include his wife, of the home, two daughters, Judy Getty and husband Larry of Hays and Jane Brack and husband Bruce of Spring Hill; a son, Leon Bahr of Olmitz; three brothers, Marion Bahr of Claflin, Donald Bahr of Olmitz and Robert Bahr of Spring, Texas; a sister, Rose Ann Wondra of Claflin; 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Helen Morgan and Mary Lou Morgan, three brothers, Cecil Bahr, Frederick Bahr and Francis Bahr, and one sister, Catherine Oborny. A family rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday; wake service will be at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by Knights of Columbus rosary, all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann Catholic Church, Olmitz, with Father Ultan Murphy officiating. Burial will be at St. Ann cemetery, Olmitz, with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post No. 7428 and American Legion Post No. 286. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial donations to St. Ann Catholic Church may be made in care of the funeral home.
