ELLINWOOD - Patricia A. Shields, 60, died Feb. 29 at Ellinwood District Hospital in Ellinwood. She was born Dec. 7, 1943, in Great Bend, the daughter of Arnold and Frances Hertach Reichuber. She married George Shields July 6, 1968, in Bushton. A 35- year resident of Ellinwood, coming from Fullerton, Calif., and Bushton, she was a sales clerk for Bogers Gallery of Gifts. Mrs. Shields was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Ellinwood. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Mark Shields of Shawnee; one daughter, Stacy Singleton of Grand View, Mo.; her mother of Ellinwood; and three brothers, Arnold Reichuber Jr. of Goddard, Gerald Reichuber and Leon Reichuber, both of Ellinwood. Altar Society rosary will be at 3 p.m. today at Kimpel Funeral Home of Ellinwood. Vigil will be at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. John Maes officiating. Burial will be at Holy Name cemetery in Bushton. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph's School Endowment Fund or Kansas State University Center for Basic Cancer Research, all in care of the funeral home. Francis J. Giebler
1917-2004
RUSSELL - Francis J. Giebler, 86, died Feb. 27 at Salina Regional Medical Center in Salina. He was born Oct. 1, 1917, in Catherine, the son of Kilian and Ann Koerner Giebler. He married Blandine Sander Nov. 11, 1946, in Walker. A resident of Russell, he worked for Deines Bros. Furniture Store and was owner of Francis J. Giebler Sales and Repair. Giebler was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Russell and American Legion Post 99. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Gene Giebler and Michael Giebler, both of Littleton, Colo., and Galen Giebler of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Edna Giebler of Russell and Bonnie Ivy of Anchorage, Alaska; six sisters, Felicitas Zimmerman and Dorothy Staab, both of Victoria, Ginny Beyer and Mary Ann Linenberger, both of Hays, Rose Cobb of Chico, Calif., and Betty Cain of Escondido, Calif.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray Giebler and Kilian Giebler; and two sisters, Germaine Spies and infant Felicitas Giebler. Vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. today at Pohlman-Heise Memorial Chapel in Russell. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Revs. Charles Steier and James Grennan officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's cemetery in Russell. Friends may call from 1 to 5:30 p.m. today at the mortuary. Family will receive friends following the vigil tonight at the mortuary. Dorothy Evelyn Batchman

Dorothy Evelyn Batchman, 85, of Great Bend, died Feb. 25 at Reno, Nev. She was born April 5, 1918, in Great Bend, the daughter of Earl and Ella May Schneider Bardwell. She married Jake T. Batchman Dec. 14, 1938, at Marion. He died May 21, 1998. A resident of Great Bend for most of her life, living in Mesa, Ariz., and Reno since 2000, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Batchman was a member of First United Methodist Church of Great Bend. Survivors include one son, Ted Batchman and wife Nancy of Reno; one sister, Shirley Tomlinson of Fort Collins, Colo.; three grandchildren, Teddie Federici of Seattle, Wash., Timothy Batchman of Atchinson and Tracey Speed of Austin, Texas; and three great-grandchildren, Noah Federici of Seattle, Alex Speed of Austin and Andrew Speed of Austin. Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend, with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to service time Friday, all at the funeral home. Virgil Amerine
1903-2004
Virgil Amerine, 100, of Great Bend, died April 28 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 12, 1903, at Great Bend, the son of George Pearl and Minnie Woestman Amerine. He married Lucille Newkirk in 1926 at Great Bend. She died in 1981. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was a farmer. Amerine was a member of Eagle's Lodge. Survivors include one son, Wayne V. Amerine of San Antonio, Texas; one daughter, Nadine Christiansen of Hoisington; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Ballhorst; and two brothers, Ernest Amerine and Wendell Amerine. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Dennis Wallace officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest cemetery in Great Bend. Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday, all at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Helen Walters, 78, of Great Bend, died April 29 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Oct. 2, 1925, at Wilsey, the daughter of John E. and Vesta Brundage Read. She married Warren Walters May 9, 1958, at Great Bend. He died Feb. 8, 1980. A resident of Great Bend since 1945, coming from Council Grove, she was a homemaker. She was a member of Central Baptist Church of Great Bend. Survivors include three sons, Michael Stevenson of Wilson, Patrick Stevenson and Larry Stevenson, both of Great Bend; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Johnnye Read. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Dr. Gordon Jones officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and from 9 a.m. to service time Monday, all at the funeral home. Justin Wyatt Haselhorst, 2 hours, died April 27 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was born April 27, 2004, at Wichita, the son of Eric and Christina Arasmith Haselhorst. Survivors include his parents of Great Bend; one brother, Matthew Joseph Haselhorst of the home; one sister, Allison Rose Haselhorst of the home; his grandparents, Daniel and Beverly Haselhorst of Great Bend, David Arasmith, and Dennis and Nancy Bachman, all of Topeka; and great-grandparents, Cecelia Steffan of Great Bend, Agedia Haselhorst of Gorham, Isabelle Savelius of Topeka, and Neil and Donna Arasmith of Phillipsburg. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Patrick Catholic Church of Great Bend, with the Rev. Reginald A. Urban officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery. There will be no visitation. Virginia M. Dangerfield McClanahan
1915-2004
NEWTON - Virginia M. Dangerfield McClanahan, 88, died April 26 at Kansas Christian Home in Newton. She was born July 10, 1915, at Wichita, the daughter of George Ross and Rosalie Brown Frye. They preceded her in death. Growing up, Virginia attended grade school, high school and two years at Baker University in Baldwin City. She was employed as a homemaker and was a bookkeeper for Seymore Foods and Kansas Livestock Association. She married Major L. Dangerfield at Topeka. He preceded her in death in 1960. Later she met and married Walter O. McClanahan in Topeka. He preceded her in death in 1979. Virginia was a past member of Ives Chapel at Baldwin City. She was an accomplished organist and pianist and served in these capacities at Central Park Christian Church in Topeka, and First Christian Church and Kansas Christian Home, both of Newton. She was a member, officer and pianist for Order of the Eastern Star No. 462 and Social Order of Beauceant Assembly No. 42, both of Topeka. When she retired to the Kansas Christian Home, she volunteered for many positions, including being their organist and pianist. Survivors include one son, Major L. Dangerfield of Dumas, Texas; two daughters, Carol Scheuerman of Great Bend and Joyce Longsdorf of Dodge City; three granddaughters, Diana Lee of Great Bend, Laura Askins of Sacramento, Calif., and Monica Longsdorf of New York City, N.Y.; and two great-grandchildren of Sacramento. She was preceded in death by her husbands Major L. Dangerfield and Walter O. McClanahan; her father, George Ross Frye; her mother, Rosalie Frye; and two grandsons. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 1, at Mt. Hope cemetery in Topeka with the Rev. James West of Kansas Christian Home in Newton. GREENSBURG - Wanda Louise Richards, 74, died April 27 at Hospice House of Pratt. She was born Feb. 17, 1930, at Liberal, the daughter of John Orville and Ina Park Bookless. She was a 1948 graduate of Glen Elder High School. She married Donald Richards April 7, 1951, at Scandia. A resident of Greensburg, coming from Liberal, she was a bookkeeper at Greensburg State Bank, retiring after 20 years, and was a church secretary for a number of years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, past president of United Methodist Women and FYI, all of Greensburg. Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Douglas Richards of Kinsley, Dennis Richards of Oberlin and Mark Richards of Wichita; one daughter, Marcia Kelly of Greensburg; two brothers, John C. Bookless of Williamsburg, Va., and Lawrence R. Bookless of Wichita; one sister, Marilyn Gantz of Silver Spring, Md.; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rachelle Kelly. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Gene McIntosh officiating. Margaret Mary Cox, 91, of Great Bend, died April 24 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Oct. 19, 1912, at Otis, the daughter of Anton J. Sr. and Emelia Haberman Schenk. She married Richard Gerald Cox May 29, 1950, at Great Bend. He died Aug. 22, 2001. A resident of Great Bend since 1942, coming from Otis, she was a homemaker, worked at Sears and was a waitress. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and St. Patrick Altar Society, both of Great Bend. Survivors include one brother, Ben F. Schenk of Great Bend; and two sisters, Stephanie Cain and Fridolina Schenk, both of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Anton J. Schenk Jr. and Leonard J. Schenk; and two sisters, Albina Schenk and an infant sister. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at the church in Great Bend, with the Rev. Ted Stoecklein officiating. Floyd Junior Hopkins, 69, of Great Bend, died April 25 at his home. He was born Aug. 24, 1934, at Garden City, the son of Floyd Earl and Inez Craten Green Hopkins. He married Carol E. Wilson Hoffman Nov. 19, 1978, at Ellinwood. A resident of Great Bend, coming from Ellinwood, he was owner of Hopkins Plumbing and a former employee of M&F Plumbing of Great Bend. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Ellinwood. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Anthony Hopkins of Ellinwood; two daughters, Laura Kaiser of Claflin and Sheila Munoz of Wichita; two brothers, William J. Hopkins of Walnut Grove, Mo., and Loren L. Hopkins of Ellsworth; one sister, Shirley Stinemetz of Garden City; 14 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded by two brothers, Robert Earl Hopkins and Tommy E. Hopkins; and one sister, Jean Geary. Funeral will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Andy Keltner officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood.
