NESS CITY - Mabel Ruth Carpenter, 84, died April 1 at Ness County Long Term Care in Ness City. She was born March 16, 1919, south of Bazine, the daughter of Reinhart and Amelia Karst Borger Jr. She married Everett A. Carpenter June 20, 1943, at Dodge City. He preceded her in death. A resident of Ness City, she was a seamstress and operated a sewing business for many years. Mrs. Carpenter was a member of Assembly of God Church and Eastern Star, both of Ness City. Survivors include one brother, Gilbert Borger of Ness City; and two sisters, Viola Harman of Dodge City and Fay Meyersick of Benton. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Cheryl Carpenter; and four brothers, Bill Borger, Emanuel Borger, Reuben Borger and Clarence Borger. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City with the Rev. Forrest Frazier officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery. Friends may call today from 1 to 9 p.m., from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church or Ness County Long Term Care, both in care of the funeral home.

Lyle Clifford Trapp 1909-2003
WALDO - Lyle Clifford Trapp, 93, died March 29 at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina. He was born Oct. 24, 1909, in Russell County near Bunker Hill, the son of John Charles and Cora Sellens Trapp. He was a graduate of Waldo High School. He married Evelyn Elizabeth Bean Aug. 5, 1939, at Beverly. A resident of rural Waldo, he was a lifetime farmer and stockman. Trapp was active on Russell County Extension Council and had been presented with a conservation award for his efforts on his farm. He served as livestock leader for Paradise Dell and Lone Star 4-H clubs, was active as a school board member for many years and had been a member of Kansas Livestock Association for nearly 50 years. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, John Trapp of Salina and James Trapp of Stillwater, Okla.; one brother, Earl Trapp of Luray; one sister, Ida Terry of Russell; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Elmer Trapp; and one sister, Mary Wheeler. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Pohlman's Memorial Chapel in Russell, with the Rev. Ed Palmer officiating. Burial will be at Russell City cemetery in Russell. Memorials are suggested to Waldo Senior Center, in care of the mortuary.

Isabel 'Belle' Lounsbury Boucher 1929-2003
Isabel 'Belle' Dorothy Lounsbury Boucher, 73, of Great Bend, died March 28 at Select Specialty Hospital in Wichita. She was born June 14, 1929, at Loretta, the daughter of John J. and Margaret Dinkel Stegman. She married James Phillip Lounsbury April 14, 1951, at Emporia. He died June 28, 1975. She married Alpha 'Jake' Boucher Nov. 10, 1984, at Great Bend. He died Nov. 2, 1985. A resident of Great Bend since 1959, coming from Eaton, Colo., she was a homemaker and worked for the custodial department at Harrison Junior High, retiring in 1985. Mrs. Boucher was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, St. Rose Altar Society, Senior Friends, all of Great Bend, and AARP. Survivors include two brothers, Hubert Stegman of Scappoose, Ore., and Norbert Stegman of Great Bend; and two sisters, Leona Krmela of Great Bend and Lydia Schuckman of La Crosse. She was preceded in death by one brother, Linus Stegman; and two sisters, Rosaline Weikert McAfee and Armella Graf. Altar Society rosary will be at 3 today and vigil will be at 6 tonight, both at Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Angel Dy officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice, in care of the funeral home.

Marie E. Ross 1917-2003
LA JUNTA, Colo. - Marie E. Ross, 85, died March 29 at Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center in La Junta. She was born Nov. 8, 1917, at Sterling, Colo., the daughter of Burton and Lottie Kintner Hollingshead. She married Raymond O. 'Jimmy' Ross July 18, 1936, at La Junta. He died Aug. 15, 1991. Survivors include one son, Gary R. 'Verlea' Ross of Hoisington; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters. Funeral will be at 2 today at Peacock Memorial Chapel in La Junta with the Rev. Solomon Adams officiating. Burial will be at Fairview cemetery in La Junta. Friends may call until 1 p.m. today at Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home in La Junta. Memorials are suggested to Arkansas Valley Hospice Association or La Junta Rural Fire and Ambulance, both in care of the funeral home.

Elva M. Schugart 1914-2003
HOISINGTON - Elva M. Schugart, 88, died March 29 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. She was born April 9, 1914, at Osawatomie, the daughter of Lester Finn and Dora Mae Aldrich Brewer. She married Leo H. Schugart Oct. 20, 1934, at Great Bend. He died Nov. 13, 1987. A lifetime resident of Hoisington, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Schugart was a member of First Christian Church, Christian Women's Fellowship, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, founding board of the Senior Center, past president of Rebekah Lodge, past president of Roosevelt Parent Teacher Association, Lady Fireman's Lodge, Clara Barton Hospital Auxiliary and a Sunday school teacher. Survivors include one son, Gary Schugart of Houston, Texas; two brothers, Everett Brewer of Olmitz and Jack Brewer of Hogansville, Ga.; two sisters, LaDene Broughton of Larned and Dolores Lindsay of Olmitz; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Vera Branyan. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington, with the Rev. Paula Bell officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Wednesday, all at the funeral home. Linda Rose Weeks 1951-2003
RUSSELL - Linda Rose Weeks, 51, died March 29 at her home in Russell. She was born Nov. 25, 1951, at Great Bend, the daughter of John and Wilma Schultz Ulrey. She married Roger Weeks Dec. 22, 1993, at Russell. A resident of Russell, coming from Olmitz area, she worked as a nurse's aide and was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband of the home; one daughter, Samantha Resner of Butler, Mo.; and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by one brother, Charles 'Butch' Ulrey; and one infant daughter, Sheila Resner. Private family inurnment will be at a later date at Olmitz cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Linda R. Weeks Memorial Fund, which will be designated later by her family, in care of Pohlman's Mortuary in Russell.

Margaret L. Heckele 1910-2003
ELLINWOOD - Margaret L. Heckele, 93, died May 29 at Ellinwood District Hospital. She was born April 24, 1910, at Odin, the daughter of Alois and Barbara Probst Birzer. She married John F. Heckele May 6, 1935, at Odin. He died Oct. 7, 1977. A lifetime resident of Barton County, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Heckele was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella. Survivors include one son, John Heckele of Great Bend; three daughters, Peggy Stremel of Great Bend, Rosella Herrman of Maple Valley, Wash., and Evelyn Swanson of Taylor, S.C.; one brother, the Rev. W.L. Birzer of Great Bend; two sisters, Tillie Prosser of Ellinwood and Ann Dreiling of Odin; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six brothers, Louis Birzer, Joe Birzer, John Birzer, Frank Birzer, Tom Birzer and Nick Birzer. Altar Society rosary will be at 3 p.m. followed by Daughters of Isabella rosary vigil service at 7 p.m. Sunday at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. John Maes officiating. Burial will be at Lakin Commanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Friends may call from 5 to 8 tonight and from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph's School Endowment in care of the funeral home.

Victor C. Koelsch 1925-2003
Victor C. Koelsch, 78, of Great Bend, died May 29 at his residence in Great Bend. He was born March 15, 1925, at Great Bend, the son of Emmett K. and Elizabeth Kern Koelsch. He married June Fanshier April 14, 1951, at Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was a retired farmer. Koelsch was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge 1127, Eagles Lodge 646, an associate member of American Legion, former member of USD 428 board of education and soil conservation board, all of Great Bend. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Ronald Lee Koelsch of Great Bend and Richard Kent Koelsch of Lincoln, Neb.; one daughter, Sandra Sue Spencer of Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother, Emmett Koelsch of Longview, Wash.; two sisters, Mary Lou Weiser of Great Bend and Rose Carroll of Overland Park; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Maurice Koelsch. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Warren Stecklein officiating. The body was donated to the University of Kansas Medical Center for Myelofibrosis research. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Central Kansas Medical Center Foundation or Heartland Cancer Center of Great Bend, both in care of the funeral home.

Gertrude Sarah Catherine Johnston 1907-2003
LYONS - Gertrude Sarah Catherine Johnston, 95, died May 30 at Buhler Sunshine Home in Buhler. She was born July 5, 1907, at rural Chase, the daughter of John and Sarah Catherine Quarterman Revel Lewis. She attended school in Chase and Lyons. She married Frank E. Shannon Oct. 26, 1930, at Hutchinson. He died Dec. 4, 1944. She married Roscoe C. Johnston Dec. 21, 1949, at Lyons. He died May 9, 1982. A lifetime Rice County resident, she was a homemaker and employed at the American Salt Company for 11 years. Survivors include two brothers, Wilbur B. Revel of Hutchinson and Floyd E. Revel of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. She was preceded in death by six brothers, William Revel, Roscoe Revel, Clem Revel, Ansel Revel, Claude Revel and Alvin Revel; and one sister, Marcella Heter. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m.Monday at Lyons Municipal cemetery in Lyons with the Rev. Gary Karas officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons. Albert Lee Ward 1940-2003
SYLVIA - Albert Lee Ward, 62, died May 29 at St. Francis Medical Center in Wichita. He was born Oct. 1, 1940, at Olustee, Okla., the son of Dempsey and Helen Cox Ward. He married Thelma Puch Oct. 1, 1974, at Sylvia. A resident of Sylvia since 1992, he was the manager of Farmer's Co-op Grain and Supply of Ashland and a former physical education teacher and coach. Ward was a member of Ashland Masonic Lodge in Ashland. Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Tracy Casey of Amarillo, Texas, Leslie Richardson of Sylvia and Lynda Anderson of Conway, Ark.; his mother of Altus, Okla.; two brothers, Ophus Ward of Bristow, Okla., and Calvin Ward of Maine; one sister, Barbara Sue Ishmael of Eldorado, Okla.; and four grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford. Burial will be at Sylvia cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

BUSHTON - Margaret Smith, 53, died May 28 at her home in Bushton. She was born March 20, 1950, at Great Bend, the daughter of Robert W. and Anna Mae Mangus Sanders. She was a graduate of Great Bend High School. She married Allen Lee Smith June 13, 1970, at Great Bend. A resident of Bushton for eight years, coming from Great Bend, she was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Allen W. Smith and Eric O. Smith, both of Ellinwood; one daughter, Lisa M. Smith Woods of Ellinwood; her mother of Bushton; three brothers, Robert L. Sanders and William Sanders, both of Great Bend, and Ralph Sanders of Bison; one sister, Gloria Towner of Paola; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant brother. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Charter Funeral Chapel in Great Bend. Cremation has taken place and inurnment will take place at a later date. Memorials are suggested to Margaret Smith Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Harry A. Horner 1923-2003
GALVA - Harry A. Horner, 79, died May 28. He was born Dec. 7, 1923, at Ash Grove. He married Carolyn. A resident of Galva, he was an employee of Certainteed of McPherson. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Allen Horner of Marquette and Merwin Horner of McPherson; three daughters, Patsy Love of Germany, Tammy Luttis of Galva and Angela Skipworth of Canton; two brothers, Ralph Horner of Great Bend and Everett Horner of Indiana; one sister, Elsie Miller of Great Bend; and eight grandchildren. William T. 'Bill' Nelson 1922-2003
KERRVILLE, Texas - William T. 'Bill' Nelson, 80, died May 28 at a local hospital. He was born Nov. 7, 1922, in Lewiston, N.Y., the son of Frank and Myrtle Young Nelson. He married Betty Banks. She preceded him in death. He married Wanda Harris Pence July 2, 1977, at Great Bend. A resident of Kerrville since 2001, coming from Great Bend, he was employed in the oil industry as a superintendent and worked for Blue Goose and Mustang Drilling, both of Great Bend. Nelson was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, both of Great Bend. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, having served in World War II with tours in France and Germany. Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Barbara Nelson of Fruita, Colo., Rebecca Heifner of Parma, Mich., and Janice Levernz of Accident, Md.; his mother of Burt, N.Y.; one brother, Frank Nelson Jr. of Gasport, N.Y.; one sister, Margaret Schmitt of Lockport, N.Y.; one step-son, Steve Pence of Crested Butte, Colo.; two stepdaughters, Janet Phillips of Lawrence and Ellen Nixon of Basking Ridge, N.J.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; six step grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
