Joseph 'Tubby' Tinkel 1924-2003
HOISINGTON - Joseph 'Tubby' Tinkel, 79, died Aug. 9 at Cheyenne Meadows Living Center in Hoisington. He was born Feb. 23, 1924, at Claflin, the son of Joseph Sr. and Mary Zorn Tinkel. He married Leonetta Schremmer Feb. 15, 1997, at Bartlesville, Okla. She died Feb. 12, 2000. A lifetime resident of Barton County, he was a self-employed farmer and worked for Beaver Grain and Schreiber Oil Company. Tinkel was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Beaver; Holy Family Church and Knights of Columbus, both of Odin, and St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Hoisington. Survivors include four stepsons, Cletus Schremmer of Pittsburg, Harold Schremmer of Houston, Texas, Don Schremmer of Odin and Raymond Schremmer of Ponca City, Okla.; eight step grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at St. John the Evangelist Church in Hoisington, with the Rev. Pascal Klein officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph cemetery in Beaver. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph cemetery Fund, in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington.

Henry J. Mattas 1925-2003
WILSON - Henry J. Mattas, 78, died Aug. 8 at Wilson. He was born Feb. 21, 1925, in Ellsworth County, the son of Frank E. and Mary E. Vopat Mattas. A lifetime resident of the Wilson area, he was a farmer and stockman. Mattas was a member of John F. McManus American Legion Post 262, Catholic Workmen and St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. He was a U. S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. Survivors include three brothers, Frank M. Mattas of Huntsville, Ala., Emil Mattas of Wilson and the Rev. Louis Mattas of Abilene; and three sisters, Mary Ann Erickson of McPherson, Rose Rita Pearce and Frances Arnold, both of Pearland, Texas. Parish vigil will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Foster Mortuary in Wilson. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Jerome Morgan officiating. Burial will be at St. Wenceslaus Catholic cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the church or Msgr. John F. McManus American Legion Post 262, all in care of the mortuary.

Mathilda Evelyn Weber Schartz 1907-2003
LEAWOOD - Mathilda Evelyn Weber Schartz, 96, died Aug. 8 at Olathe Medical Center in Olathe. She was born Aug. 4, 1907, at Dubuque. Survivors will be announced at a later date. Rosaries will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday and Monday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Altar Society rosary and Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 4 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Dominican Chapel of the Plains in Great Bend. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery. Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend is in charge of arrangements.

Peyton Douglas Snodgrass 2003-2003
LARNED - Peyton Douglas Snodgrass died Aug. 8 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was the infant son of Douglas Lee and Felicia Ann Gilbert Snodgrass. Survivors include his parents of Larned; grandparents, John and Julie Snodgrass of Garfield, Christine Wagner of Larned, and Carl Gilbert of Clyde; and seven great-grandparents, Romona Snodgrass of Garfield, Margaret Miller and John Miller, both of Wamego, Sandra Hamon of Hastings, Neb.; Edwin Jensen of Grinnell, Iowa, and Joseph and Victoria Gilbert of Jamestown. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Garfield cemetery in Garfield, with the Rev. Tony Horsley officiating. Friends may call until 8 p.m. Sunday at Morrell Funeral Home in Larned. Memorials are suggested to United Methodist Church of Rozel, in care of the funeral home.

Clifford G. Brack 1915-2003
RUSSELL - Clifford G. Brack, 89, died Aug. 5 at Hays Medical Center. He was born Nov. 22, 1913, at Otis, the son of Peter P. and Emma C. Hergert Brack. He was a 1931 graduate of Otis High School. He married Elsie A. Karst Jan. 22, 1943, at Reno, Nev. A resident of Russell from 1976, coming from Great Bend, he was deputy Rush County clerk and a farm equipment manager for most of his life, working for Meisinger and Schneider in Otis and Gibson Titus and Stafford in the Great Bend area, and several farm co-ops. Brack was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Veterans of Foreign Wars of Otis and Great Bend, the American Legion of Great Bend and Elks Lodge of Russell. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Marsha Gullickson of Bloomington, Minn.; special caregiver, Leon Brack; one sister, Juanita A. Brack of La Crosse; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy E. Brack and Verrel J. Brack; one infant sister; and one granddaughter, Maren Gullickson. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Henry Hartman officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Hillcrest Memorial cemetery north of Great Bend. Friends may call from 9 a.m to 9 p.m. today at Pohlman's Mortuary in Russell. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday. Memorials are suggested to St. John Lutheran cemetery fund, in care of the mortuary.

Bonnie Lee Morton 1928-2003
STERLING - Bonnie Lee Morton, 75, died Aug. 5 at Hutchinson Hospital. She was born Feb. 5, 1928, at Trousdale, the daughter of Robert and Maudie Mae McHugh Davidson. She married Carold Mead in 1947. She married Robert Morton Sept. 24, 1977, at Hutchinson. Mrs. Morton was a member of United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Friendship Circle and Sterling College Volunteer, all of Sterling. Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Gary Mead of Great Bend, Steve Mead of Belpre and Michael Mead of Hutchinson; two stepdaughters, Debbie Wolfe of Sterling and Kathie Pauls of Hutchinson; one sister, Irene DeHaven of Augusta; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Everett Davidson, Howard Davidson and Gaylord Davidson. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the church, with the Rev. Dr. Lee R. Louderback officiating. Burial will be at Sterling Community cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the church or Sterling College, both in care of the funeral home.

Bertha Jordan 1917-2003
Bertha Jordan, 85, of Great Bend, died Aug. 7 at Central Kansas Medical Center. She was born Sept. 29, 1917, at Ness County, the daughter of Henry and Katherine Elizabeth Miller Scheck. She married Kenneth A. Jordan June 16, 1940, at Great Bend. He died May 10, 1979. A longtime resident of Great Bend, she was an Avon representative. Mrs. Jordan was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Great Bend. Survivors include one son, Ron Jordan of Henderson, Nev.; one daughter, Sharon Pollard of Mesa, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Solomon Scheck, Dan Scheck, Abraham Scheck, Benjamin Scheck and Herman Scheck; and three sisters, Molly Popp, Marie Rahm and Martha Wittig. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home, with the Rev. Diana Coberly officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest cemetery north of Great Bend. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of the funeral home.

A. Emerson Stoskopf 1916-2003
HOISINGTON - A. Emerson Stoskopf, 87, died Aug. 5. He was born April 28, 1916, near Hoisington, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Stoskopf. A resident of Santa Maria, Calif., coming from Wichita and Hoisington, he was employed by Camp Cooke, Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Stoskopf was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church in Wichita, Clifton Club, director of Girl Scouts of America of Sedgwick County, a member of Lions Club, a charter member of Wichita YMCA, a board member of Santa Maria Valley Historical Society, a charter member of Sons of the American Revolution, Central Coastguard Chapter, First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, charter member of YMCA and Lions Club, both of Santa Maria. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie G. Stoskopf of Santa Maria; one son, Randall E. Stoskopf of Santa Maria; one daughter, Gretchen S. Falvo of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one infant son, Stacy Stoskopf; and two brothers, Howard Stoskopf and Frederick Stoskopf. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Dudley Hoffman Mortuary in Santa Maria, Calif.

William C. 'Bill' Grimes 1933-2003
BORGER, Texas - William C. 'Bill' Grimes, 60, died Aug. 6 at Borger. He was born Feb. 18, 1943, at Ness City. A resident of Borger since 1986, he was an operator for Phillips Refinery. Grimes was a member of Local Union 351. He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves. Survivors include his wife Betty of the home; one son, Kelly Grimes of Great Bend; his father, Glenn Grimes of Lampasas, Texas; and one brother, Ronnie Alexander of Lampasas. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Minton Memorial Chapel in Borger, with the Rev. Terry Stegall officiating. Cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to BSA Hospice, Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79105 or the American Cancer Society, both in care of the funeral home.

Howard Donald Kilgore 1917-2003
ALDEN - Howard Donald Kilgore, 85, died Aug. 6 at his residence in Valley Center. He was born Dec. 17, 1917, at Thayer, the son of David Matthew and Alice Melissa Pentzer Kilgore. He graduated from Caney High School. He married Anna Lee Jones June 14, 1941, at Sedan. She died March 2, 1974. A resident of Valley Center, coming from Chase and Alden, he was a retired oil field hand and truck driver. Kilgore was a U.S. Air Corps veteran, having served as master sergeant during World War II in the 529 Bomb Squad 380 Bomb Group and with the Flying Circus, receiving the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Survivors include two sons, Danny Dean Kilgore of Chase and William Fredrick Kilgore of Great Bend; two daughters, Diana Mae Holliday of Sterling and Lyndee Ann Leckner of Valley Center; one brother, Eugene Kilgore of Independence; one sister, Marge Green of Post Falls, Idaho; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Jimmy Kilgore, Dave Kilgore; W.C. Kilgore and Harold Lee Kilgore Sr.; four sisters, Maxine Wornkey, Emma Lou Deafenbaul; Myrtle Robinson and Sweet Kilgore. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Alden Valley cemetery with full military honors by Fort Riley. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday at Sillin Funeral Home in Sterling. Lois B. Unruh 1921-2003
LARNED - Lois B. Unruh, 82, died Aug. 6 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned. She was born July 1, 1921, at Pawnee Rock, the daughter of Frank G. and Carrie Unruh Unruh. She married LaVerne Unruh Nov. 26, 1941, at Pawnee Rock. A lifetime Larned-area resident, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Unruh was a member of Bergthal Mennonite Church of Pawnee Rock and Sunflower Club of Larned. Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Gary L. Unruh of Hesston, Lyonell Unruh of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Virlon Unruh of Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada; two sisters, Eldora Schwartz of Burrton and Arlene Reece of Burdette; and five grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend with the Revs. Todd Schlosser and Lynn Schlosser officiating. Burial will be at Mennonite Memorial cemetery in Pawnee Rock. Thomas J. 'Tom' Moeder 1926-2003
LA CROSSE - Thomas J. 'Tom' Moeder, 76, died Aug. 6 at his home in La Crosse. He was born Aug. 20, 1926, at rural Liebenthal, the son of Pius and Mary Steiner Moeder. He married Elenora Herrman June 15, 1948, at La Crosse. A lifelong resident of Rush County, he was a farmer. Moeder was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Liebenthal, Knights of Columbus St. Augustine Council 2340, 4th Degree Knights of Bishop Cunningham Assembly; Knights of Columbus past state warden; Knights of Columbus honorary member; past co-op board member; and board member Liebenthal Heritage Association. Survivors include his wife of the home; five sons, Larry Moeder of Manhattan, Leon Moeder of Wichita, Kurt Moeder, Kevin Moeder and Duane Moeder, all of La Crosse; two brothers, Bill Moeder of La Crosse and Rudy Moeder of Wichita; one sister, Sister Scholastica of Wichita; 12 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leo Moeder and Albert Moeder; and one sister, Monica Moeder. St. Ann's Altar Society rosary will be at 6 p.m. tonight, followed by a vigil service and 4th degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m. tonight, all at St. Michael's Church in La Crosse. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Liebenthal, with the Rev. August Moeder officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph's cemetery in Liebenthal. Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. today at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse and from 6 to 8 tonight at St. Michael's Catholic Church in La Crosse. Memorials are suggested to Liebenthal's Heritage Association, La Crosse Youth Baseball or the donor's choice, all in care of the funeral home.

Martha Steinert 1905-2003
OTIS - Martha Steinert, 98, died Aug. 6 at Cheyenne Meadows Living Center of Hoisington. She was born May 25, 1905, in Barton County, the daughter of Phillip and Anna Brack Steitz. She married Albert Steinert Aug. 17, 1924, at Milberger. He died March 15, 1996. A lifetime resident of the Otis-Hoisington area, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Steinert was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Otis. Survivors include three sons, Eugene Steinert of Russell, Robert Lee Steinert of Aurora, Colo., and Kenneth Steinert of Great Bend; two daughters, Alberta Brack of Hoisington and Anna Marie Powell of Salina; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Waldean Steinert; three brothers, Constain Steitz, Edward Steitz and Richard Steitz; and one sister, Rachel Schrater. Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Larry Frank, PMA, officiating. Burial will be at Lutheran cemetery in Otis. Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church or Otis EMTs, both in care of the funeral home.

Kenneth L. Lonnberg 1919-2003
JETMORE - Kenneth L. Lonnberg, 84, died Aug. 5 at Hodgeman County Health Center in Jetmore. He was born June 5, 1919, in the Jetmore area, the son of Arthur and LuLu Upp Lonnberg. He married Audrey Neeley July 8, 1946, at Syracuse. A lifetime resident of Jetmore, he was a postal worker and rural mail carrier for 40 years. Lonnberg was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Bowling Association, both of Dodge City, and Masons, American Legion and Jetmore Country Club, all of Jetmore. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Kurt Lonnberg of Jetmore, two daughters, Marcie Bradford of Jetmore and Kris Scothorn of Burlington; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold Lonnberg, John Lonnberg, Bill Lonnberg and Louie Lonnberg; and one sister, Helen York. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church of Jetmore with the Rev. Mitch Reece officiating. Burial will be at Fairmount cemetery in Jetmore. Friends may call from 9 a.m to 8 p.m. today and until 11 a.m. Friday, all at Beckwith Funeral Home in Jetmore. Memorials are suggested to Hodgeman County Health Center, in care of the funeral home.
