Vesta Smith

Vesta Stump Smith, 97, of Pike County, died Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at the Tug Valley ARH Hospital, South Williamson.

She was born in Pikeville, May 5, 1919, the daughter of the late McClellan and Martha “Smith” Stump.

Besides her parents, Vesta was preceded in death by one son, Wilburn Smith; three sisters, Annie Dotson, Pearl Hurley, and Essie Simon; three brothers, Arthur Stump, Leonard Stump and Willis Stump; one grandchild, and three great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving husband, Richard Smith of Phelps; one daughter, Ella Smith (Clarence) of Somerset; two sons, Turner Smith (Linda) of Somerset and Harold Smith of Kimper; 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Freewill Baptist ministers officiating. Entombment will follow in the J.U. Thacker Mausoleum, Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe Road. Arrangements are under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Visitation is after 5 p.m.

Timmy Thacker

Timmy Robert Thacker, 53, of Pikeville, died Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at Pikeville Medical Center.

He was born in Pikeville, Dec. 6, 1962, the son of the late Robert and Shirley Russell Thacker.

He is survived by his wife, Tracy Thacker; two daughters, Amanda Thacker and Kimberly Dawn Thacker, both of Pikeville; two brothers, Clifton Thacker (Betty) of Shelbiana and Kenneth Thacker (Lisa) of Pikeville; and two sisters, Peggy Coleman of Pikeville and Pamela Howell (Todd) of Paintsville.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 24, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Billy Compton officiating. Burial will follow in the Justice Family Cemetery, Pikeville. Arrangements are under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Special services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Lloyd Bullock

Lloyd Scott Bullock, 68, of Elkhorn City, died Monday, Oct. 12, 2015, at his home.

He was born born in Pike County, March 15, 1947, the son of the late Harold Bullock and Opal Boyd Bullock.

He was a coal miner and a member of United Mine Workers of America.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Lloyd Mack Bullock.

He is survived by his wife, Christine Bullock; one daughter, Tera Damron; four stepchildren; three grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and special friends, Mike and Bernice Proffitt.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, in the Dow Brooks Cemetery with Hobert McCoy officiating. Arrangements were under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Fred Carter

Fred Carter, 105, of Raccoon, died Friday, Dec. 11, 2015, at his home.

Carter was born in Pike County, July 7, 1910, the son of the late Newte and Jessa Gooslin Carter.

He was a World War II veteran, a retired coal miner and carpenter. He was of the Baptist faith.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Blackburn Carter; his first wife, Zella King Carter; two brothers; and three sisters.

He is survived by one daughter, Evelyn Hall (Jeff); nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at noon Tuesday, Dec. 15, in the Grassy Freewill Baptist Church with Mark Justice officiating. Burial followed in Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel. Arrangements were under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Alice Davis

Alice Faye Davis, 71, of Fort Wayne, Ind., died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2015.

She was born in Pikeville, the daughter of the late Walter and Orpha Thacker.

She had lived in Fort Wayne since 1961 and retired from Mattel as the human resource manager in 1999. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Williamson and Norma Hunt; and her brother-in-law, Mike Craft.

She is survived by her husband, James Davis; one daughter, Sheila Weldy (Keith) of Peyton, Colo.; one son, Michael Davis (Julie) of Paola, Kan.; one brother, Bob Thacker (Betty) of Pikeville; three sisters, Pauline Craft (Ward) and Nancy Craft, both of Fort Wayne, and Sue Wright of New Haven, Ind.; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, at First Assembly of God Church, Fort Wayne, with Ron Hawkins officiating. Arrangements were under direction of Hockemeyer & Miller Funeral Home of Fort Wayne.

“Dean” Poe

Erman “Dean” Poe, 47, of Pikeville, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.

He was born in Prestonsburg, Jan. 2, 1968, the son of the late Erman Poe and Shirley Barnette Poe.

He is survived by his wife, Tina Lynn Ferrell Poe, whom he married April 25, 1987; one son, Teddy Dean Poe (Shelby) of Virgie; one daughter, Amber Brooke Bryant (Troy) of Coal Run Village; his mother-in-law, Jo Ferrell of Pikeville; three brothers, Mickey Keller of Tennessee, Paul Poe of Pikeville and Thomas Keller of Indiana; one sister, Nora Lou Meade of Prestonsburg; six grandchildren, Isabella Bryant, Landon Dean Ratliff, Zoey Poe, Troy Casyn Bryant, Teddy Mason Poe and Brooklynn Bryant.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Ferguson Cemetery, Harold. Arrangements are under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Stella Puckett

Stella Puckett, 95, of Nicholasville, formerly of Elkhorn City, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 2015, at the home of her son.

She was born in Praise, May 21, 1920, the daughter of the late Robert Stapleton and Susie Potter Stapleton.

She was a production worker at Keen’s Products and a member of the Sulphur Springs Church.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Puckett Sr.; five siblings, Ted Stapleton, Edna Anderson, Crockett Stapleton, Della Spears and Ella Boylan; and one great-granddaughter.

She is survived by five children, Ernest Puckett Jr. of Shipshewana, Ind., Patricia Ann Beighle of Williamstown, Martha Lynn Jacobson-Potter and Steve Puckett, both of Nicholasville, and Mary Sue Rovelto of Somersworth, N.H.; 14 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Jerry Overstreet, Freddie Overstreet, Larry Puckett, Phil Hines and Howard Denton Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.

Elmer Ratliff

Elmer Cline Ratliff, 71, of Mt. Sterling, formerly of Pikeville, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, in the Blessed Hope Freewill Baptist Church, Millard, with burial following in Clarmont Memorial Gardens, Winchester. Arrangements are under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Special services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Virginia Reynolds

Virginia Claudette Reynolds, 73, of Grethel, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2015, at her home.

She was born in Pike County, Oct. 27, 1942, the daughter of the late James Adkins and Anna B. Casebolt.

She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Reynolds; two daughters, Teresa Damron and Annette Damron; one brother, Tommy Adkins; and one sister, Lila Annette Adkins.

She is survived by two sons, Ernest Reynolds and David Reynolds; seven daughters, Tammy Meadows, Judy Cole, Lesha Murrell, Rhonda Damron, Sandy Hall, Linda Hall and Patty Litchkowski; two brothers, Lonnie Adkins and Billy Adkins; several grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at noon Sunday, Dec. 13, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Billy Compton officiating. Burial followed in the Fords Branch Cemetery. Arrangements were under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

“Honk” Robinson

Ronnie “Honk” Robinson, 58, of Booker Fork, died Monday, Dec. 14, 2015, at his home.

He was born in Pike County, Dec. 1, 1957, the son of Walter Robinson and the late Margine Kiser Robinson.

He was disabled, participated in the TR Program at Mountain Comprehensive Care Center, and was of the Old Regular Baptist faith.

In addition to his father, he is survived by three brothers, Verlin Robinson, Sterling Robinson and Tommy Robinson; and two sisters, Brenda Gay Mullins and Teresa Ann Anderson.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Kermit Wright and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Booker Fork Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday with special services nightly at 7.

Connie Sanders

Connie M. Sanders, 82, of Howard Hollow, Chattaroy, W.Va., died Monday, Dec. 14, 2015, at Signature Healthcare, Pikeville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
