Michael Hicks

Michael Hicks, 61, of Elkhorn Creek, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, at the Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital.

He was born in Pike County, Sept. 2, 1954, the son of Carlos (Cotton) and Georgia Little Tackett.

Michael was a retired coal miner, a member of the Hylton Freewill Baptist Church and an avid race car driver for years.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Kinney Hicks; two sons, Chris Hicks (Kim) of Lick Fork and Ryan Hicks (Brandi) of Shelbiana; one sister. Kathy Johnson (Ernie) of Elkhorn Creek; five grandchildren, Kristen Hicks, Rylan Hicks, Abbi McCoy, Olivia Young and Tanner Bentley; two great-grandchildren, Teddi Young and Taryn Young; and a special nephew, Tyler.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, in the Hall & Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery, Caney Creek. Arrangements are under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.

Johnny McGuire

Johnny Cecil McGuire, 65, of Phelps, passed away Sunday, Oct. 11, 2015, at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. His loving wife Sheila and his family were at his side.

Johnny was born in Pikeville, Oct. 30, 1949. He grew up in the Johnstown community of Meta. He graduated from Johns Creek High School, where he was active in sports. He had a particular love and affinity for basketball.

Johnny was of the Church of Christ faith and attended the Zebulon Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Jean Branham; and his grandfather, Dover May.

In addition to his devoted wife Sheila, Johnny is survived by daughters, Candy Taylor (Marvin) of McVeigh, Christy Layne (Randy) of Virgie, Amanda Madden (Chris) of Kailua, Hawaii, Scarlett Pinson of Lexington; and a son, John McGuire (April) of Allen.

He is also survived by his brother, Frank McGuire (Viva) of Lexington; and sisters, Timothea Branham (Sam) of Lexington and Amy Branham of New Orleans; six grandchildren, Brandi Thorpe, Trish, Taylor, Donovan and Mason Layne, and Madison and Corbin Madden; and two great-grandsons, Trenton Cox and Tyson Rowe.

Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 6 to 9 p.m at the Zebulon Church of Christ. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, with Shane Lockard and Bob Werntz officiating. Burial will follow in the Bent Ridge Cemetery, Meta. Arrangements are under direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Reva Mullins

Reva Lois Mullins, 72, of Hellier, died peacefully, Friday, Oct. 9, 2015, at her home.

Lois was born in Pikeville, June 1, 1943, the daughter of the late Watt Tackett and Lula Bowens.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert Eugene Mullins; one son, Donald O’Neil Mullins; two brothers, Tommy Tackett and Don Lawson; and four sisters, Artheda Chaney, Mary Tackett, Brenda Blevins and Clara Louisa Tackett; and her stepfather, Ellis Ray Bowens.

Lois is survived by three sons, Robert Eugene Mullins II, Dennis Ray Mullins and Carl Randall Mullins, all of Hellier; three daughters, Anna Lisa Asbury of Virginia, Henria Eugenia Blades of Baltimore and Randi Michelle Hunt of Hellier; one brother, Ray Tackett of Hellier; one sister, Sharon Newsome of Hellier; nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Lois was a loving mother and a cherished part of her family. She will be missed and treasured.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the Allegheny Freewill Baptist Church with Ray Tackett and others officiating. Burial followed in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe Road. Arrangements were under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Brenda Murphy

Brenda Joyce Murphy, 67, of Delbarton, W.Va., died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, at Williamson Memorial Hospital, Williamson, W.Va.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements were under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.

Dorothy

Overstreet

Dorothy M. Overstreet, 68, of Elkhorn City, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, at Cabell-Huntington Hospital, Huntington, W.Va.

She was born in Woodway, Va., June 10, 1947, the daughter of the late James W. McKinney and Lelia Janell Johnston McKinney.

She was a retired dietary manager, formerly employed by Mountain View Health Care Center, and was a member of the Sweet Home Regular Baptist Church for approximately 40 years.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Mabel Hayes McKinney; and one stepbrother, Tommy Diamond.

She is survived by her husband, Freddy Overstreet; two daughters, Barbie Haynes (Seth) and Missy Sanders (Aaron), both of Elkhorn City; three brothers, Jim McKinney (Adele) of Nicholasville, Richard McKinney (Connie) of Phelps and Bill McKinney (Loretta) of Morristown, Tenn.; one sister, Roxanne Blankenship (Billy) of Elkhorn City; six grandchildren, Terry Haynes (Morgan), Sarah Haynes, Isaiah Haynes, Luke Sanders, Noah Sanders and Sadie Sanders; and two great-grandchildren, Grayson Haynes and Claire Haynes.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Robert Kelly, Robert Osborne, Toy Looney and others officiating. Burial followed in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.

Kermit Phillips

Kermit John Phillips, 89, of Kimper, died Monday, Oct. 12, 2015, at his home.

He was born at Kimper, March 24, 1926, the son of the late Leonard Phillips and Stella Dotson Phillips.

He was a retired coal miner formerly employed by Eastern Coal Corporation, McVeigh; a member of United Mine Workers Local #5737; a U.S. Navy veteran; and a member of the Edo Freewill Baptist Church.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by Johnny Ray Phillips.

He is survived by his wife, Illene Varney Phillips; one son, Alan Ross Phillips (Roma); one daughter, Karen Ward (David); three stepsons, Darrell Gregory Phillips (Floretta), Timothy Wayne Phillips (Becky) and Richard Kermit Phillips (Doretha); two sisters, Nola Hatfield and Geneva Lell; eight grandchildren, five step grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Jim Patton and Pikeville Freewill Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Phillips Family Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Visitation begins Thursday with special services at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

Ahlora Tackett

Ahlora Grace Tackett, 11 weeks old, died Monday, Oct. 12, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.

She was born in Harlan, July 21, 2015, the daughter of Jeffery and Shantana Little Tackett of Red Creek.

Besides her parents, she is survived by one brother, Daniel Tackett; her maternal grandparents, Adam Little of Caney and Angela and Joey Ratliff of Red Creek; and her paternal grandparents, Jerry and Sherry Tackett of Virgie and Janet and Bill Adams of Harlan.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, in the Long Fork Old Regular Baptist Church with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Tackett Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.

Visitation is at the church after 6 p.m. Wednesday, with special services nightly at 7.

Con Bentley

Con Bentley, 70, of Left Fork of Long Fork, Virgie, died Friday, October 9, 2015, at home

He was born December 11, 1944, at Virgie, the son of the late Wilburn and Sarah Belle Johnson Bentley.

He was a retired coal miner from Bethlehem Coal Company and was of the Church of Christ faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Don Bentley.

He is survived by sons and daughters, Madonna (Tom) Keathley, James Wilburn “Jimmy” (Stephanie) Bentley, Condra Gaye Bentley, Ron (Molly) Bentley, Danny Jason (Jenny) Bentley, Talisha (Sammy) Nelson, Sheena (Chris) Johnson, Brittany (Daniel) Blair, and Cheyenne (Mouse) Bentley; brothers and sisters, Sylvia Sowards, Donald Bentley, Rebel Bevins, Bertina Bentley, Darrell Bentley; and 23 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, October 12, at Lucas and Son Funeral Home, Pikeville. Burial will follow in the Bentley Family Cemetery, Left Fork of Long Fork.

Visitation will begin Saturday at the funeral home.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lucas and Son Funeral Home, Pikeville.

Bruce Justice

Bruce Justice, 73, of Elkhorn City, passed away Thursday October 8, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.

He was born February 23, 1942 at Elkhorn City, to the late Butler and Lexie “Adams” Justice.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda Sue Justice; two brothers, Arthur Garfield and Palmer Justice; and three sisters, Edna Bishop, Beatrice Gilespie and Linda Lou Nichols.

Bruce is survived by two sons, Brian Bruce Justice and Jon Butler, both of Powells Creek, one daughter, Robin Maranda McCurry of Elkhorn City; two brothers, Tracy Allen of Tennessee and James Leroy Justice of Justiceville; two sisters, Rhoda Belle Murphy and Wanell Farmer, both of Tennessee; and three grandchildren, Kelsie Mariah, Justin McCurry and Amanda McCurry and five great-grandchildren.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, October 10, 2015, with burial following at Annie E. Young Cemetery of Pikeville.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Eloise Chapman

Eloise Christine Chapman, 67, of Phyllis, died Monday, Oct. 5, 2015, at her home.

She was born in Phyllis, Sept. 16, 1948, the daughter of the late Andy Adams and Brooksie Justice Casey.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Kimper Church of God.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas Jefferson Chapman; one son, Kelvin Williamson of Phyllis; one daughter, Theresa Ann Miller of Phyllis; one stepson, Jeffery Chapman of Kermit, W.Va.; one sister, Geraldine Shaffer of Pioneer, Ohio; two brothers, Roger Casey of Virgie and Eddie Casey of Phyllis; five grandchildren, Courtney Belcher, Cameron Miller, Corey Williamson, Conner Williamson and Bentley Chapman; and two great-grandchildren, Addisyn Belcher and Bristol Belcher.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, in the Kimper Church of God with Robert Coleman and Eddie Dotson officiating. Burial will follow in the Justice Family Cemetery, Phyllis. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
