Terry Strong

Terry Strong, 51, of Ashland, formerly of Long Fork, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at the Community Hospice Care Center, Ashland.

He was born in Floyd County, July 12, 1961, the son of the late Hatler and Bessie Tackett Strong.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Glen Everett Strong; and one sister, Judith Ann Holbrook.

He is survived by one brother, Tommy Strong of Ashland; one sister, Sandra Kay Wilson; and six nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, in the Wheelwright Freewill Baptist Church with Vernon Johnson and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Brian Tackett Cemetery, Hi Hat. Arrangements are under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.

William Taylor

William Jefferson “Boshy” Taylor, 84, of Sidney, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.

He was born March 26, 1928, the son of the late Kelsey and Alice Helen Smith Taylor.

Before his retirement he was a diesel mechanic for the Eastern Coal Company. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Anita Carollyn “Ann” Young Taylor; one son, Todd Taylor of Sidney; and three brothers, Theodore Taylor, John Taylor and James Lonnie Taylor, all of Sidney.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Taylor Cemetery, Dix Fork of Sidney. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Byron Vernatter

Byron Keith Vernatter, 55, of Flatwoods, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

He was born in South Williamson, Dec. 11, 1957, the son of Marie Muncy Vernatter Walker of Delbarton, W.Va., and the late Dewey Dale Vernatter.

He was retired as a Master Electrician from Arch Coal.

He is survived by his wife, Megan Jones Vernatter; two sons, Maj. Jeremy Dempsey of Camp Lejeune, N.C., and Bryan Vernatter of Nolan, W.Va.; one daughter, Maria Nicole Deskins of Nolan; one brother, Gary Vernatter of South Point, Ohio; one sister, Debrah Scott of Delbarton; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, the Chafin Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenny Workman officiating. Burial will follow in the White Family Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Steen Funeral Home of Ashland.

Visitation is from noon to 2 p.m. Friday.

Memorials are suggested to the King’s Daughters Health Foundation Oncology Center of Excellence, Attn: Jane Blankenship, 2201 Lexington Avenue, Ashland, KY 41101.

Ruby Virse

Bertha Lee “Ruby” Marcum Virse, 86, of Belfry, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at her home.

Sh was born Oct. 18, 1926, the daughter of the late Bazil Marcum and Gertie Marcum Alley.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. James Rollan Virse; three sisters, Virginia, Birdie and Norma; one brother, Carl; and one granddaughter.

She was a long-time employee of Sears Roebuck of Williamson, W.Va. She was a member of the Belfry United Methodist Church and was choir director for Belfry United Methodist, Hardy United Methodist and Stone United Methodist churches. Ruby was a 52 -year member and Past Worthy Matron of Stone Chapter #533 O.E.S.

She is survived by one daughter, Sharon Smith of Belfry; one son, James R. Virse of Georgetown; three grandchildren, Robyn Smith of Mt. Sterling, and Wendy Holbrook and Matthew Virse, both of Georgetown; four great grandchildren, and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, with Geoff Tackett, David Stanley and Mike Hunter officiating. Arrangements were under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.

Virginia Wicker

Virginia Marie Wicker, 89, of Red Jacket, W.Va., died Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at her home.

She was born in Pike County, April 17, 1923, the daughter of the late Landon L. Hatfield and Florence Endicott Hatfield.

She was a 76-year member of the Matewan Church of God.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sephas Wicker; three sisters, Meryle, Alice and Ethel; and four brothers, Dan, William, Woodrow and Lawson.

She is survived by three sons, Gary Wicker of Moberley, Mo., Rodney Wicker of Honaker, Va., and Tommy Wicker of Red Jacket; two daughters, Rita Riggle of Columbus, Ohio, and Bonnie Beadle of Lake Jackson, Texas; and a host of grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, in the Chambers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Buskirk Cemetery, Buskirk. Arrangements were under direction of Chambers Funeral Services of Matewan.

Barbara Maynard

Barbara Cornette Maynard, 90, of May Road, Thomasville, N.C., formerly of Pike County, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at Lexington Health Care Center, Thomasville.

She was born in Pike County, May 23, 1922, the daughter of the late Floyd Cornette and Edna Williamson Cornette.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Lexington Church of Christ in North Carolina.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Maynard Jr.

She is survived by two sons, Nelson Maynard of Thomasville and Larry Maynard of Washington; two sisters, Lucille Walters and Sylvia Manha, both of Belfry; one grandson, Ricky Maynard of Thomasville; and one great-grandson.

Graveside services were held Sunday, Dec. 23, in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, with Donnie Estep officiating. Arrangements were under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.

Beatrice Moore

Beatrice “Perkey” Moore, 84, of Oxford, Ohio, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at Oxford of Knolls.

She was born in Floyd County, Feb. 17, 1928, the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Janet Booth Perkey.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters.

She is survived by three sons, Jack McPeek (Brenda) of Gallipolis, Ohio, Michael McPeek (Debbie) of Martinsville, Va., and Charles Patrick McPeek (Cyndi) of Lakeland, Fla.; one daughter, Laurita McPeek Rhoton (Tim); eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with entombment following in Annie E. Young Cemetery, Shelbiana. Arrangements are under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Homer Hatfield, Sr.

Homer A, Hatfield, Sr., 75, of Hanover, W.Va., Tuesday, Dec. 18t, 2012, at Raleigh General Hospital at Beckley W.Va.

He was born May 8, 1937, at Simon, W.Va., the son of the late Otis and Francis Lawrence Hatfield.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Alex, Don and Clarence Hatfield; and two sisters, Ruby Hall and Truby Toler.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Hatfield of Hanover; his two sons, Douglas Dean Hatfield of Hanover, Homer Hatfield, Jr. of Oceana, W.Va.; two daughters, Pam Kennedy of Clear Fork, W.Va., and Denita Walker of Clear Fork; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren;

Funeral services will held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, at the Hanover House of Faith with Rev. Larry Lester and Rev. Jarvas Walls officiating. Burial will follow in the Toler Cemetery at Laurel Branch.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Hanover House of Faith Friday with a special service at 7 pm.

Bonita King

Bonita King, 65, of Elkhorn City died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.

She was born May 10, 1947, in Pike County to the late Corbit Blackburn and Bertha Ramey Blackburn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis King, Jr.; one son, Larry King; and one grandchild.

She is survived by one son, Burl “Shag” King of Ashcamp; and one daugther, Judy Mullins of Elkhorn City; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; two brothers, Corbit Blackburn, Jr. of Lick Creek and Phillip Blackburn of Pikeville; and three sisters, Bernice Ramey, Leda Carol Branham both of Lick Creek and Don Rita Fredrick of Ann Arbor, Mich.

Funeral services will be Saturday, at Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.

Iva Layne

Iva Lee “Preach” Layne, 84, a resident of Barrenshe Creek of Freeburn, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at the Pikeville Medical Center in Pikeville.

He was born April 15, 1928, at Freeburn, the son of the late Merda and Bessie Griffey Layne.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Mounts Layne; two daughters, Denita Layne and Linda Layne; one grandson, Brian Keith Ward; three brothers, Raymond, Roy and Bill Layne; and three sisters, Ruth Mounts, Beatrice Hardin and Ruby Charles.

He was a retired coal miner.

He is survived by his children, Violet (Jay) Orr of Orland Hills, Ill., Ola (Luther) Davis of Pilgrim Knob, Va., Pamela (Jackie) Perry of Dandridge, Tenn., Sondra (Jeffery) Johnson of Roanoke, Va., Sherry (Ray) Griffith of Phelps, Teresa (Johnny) Hurley of Majestic, Allan (Kay) Layne of Sprigg, W.Va., Jerry (Pam) Layne and Joey (Debbie) Layne both of Freeburn; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Joyce Workman of Defuniak Springs, Fla. and Grace Mullins of Kimper.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at the Barrenshe Church of God with Rev. Bobby Dale Wolford and Rev. Doug Maynard officiating.

Burial will follow in the Layne Family Cemetery, Barrenshe Creek.

Visitation is Friday at the church with services at 7 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of the R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home of Phelps.

Brenda Morgan

Brenda Gail Morgan, 57, of Simon, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at her residence.

She worn Aug. 11, 1955, in Corbin, the daughter of the late Billy Jack and Jenette Boggs Cornett.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Earmon Morgan; and one brother, Tom Norton.

She was a homemaker and a born again Christian of the Baptist Faith. She loved to grow a garden, work in her flower beds, to fish, to hunt, to feed the birds and to take care of her house dog.

She is survived by her two sons, Johnathan Haynes of Cyclone and Jason Haynes of Ecorse Mich.; three grandchildren; seven sisters, Dorothy Mahoney, Phyllis Wilson, Debra Hepola, Marsha Garwick, Margaret Pierce, Elanor Cornett and Rosie Norton; four brothers, Billy Norton, Kenny Norton, Rodney Cotton and Bobby Norton.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, at the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lonnie Blankenship and Rev. Andy Bo Kennedy officiating.

Burial will follow in the Milty Morgan Cemetery at Long Branch of Simon.
