Lillie Bartley

Lillie Ann Edwards Bartley, 71, of Danville, Va., died Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at her home.

She was born in Danville, June 19, 1941, the daughter of the late George and Lula Edwards.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, George Edwards Jr.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Willie Ray Bartley; one daughter, Annette Jeter of Danville; two sons, Ray Bartley of Danville and Jeff Bartley of Raleigh, N.C.; three stepchildren, Thaddeus Bartley, Jerry Bartley and Peggy Vaught, all of Radford, Va.; four siblings, Mary Johnson, Fannie Herndon, Kathy Hamlet and Lonnie Edwards, all of Danville; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Bowling Fork Freewill Baptist Church.

Thelma Blackburn

Thelma Blackburn, 90, of Lexington, formerly of Pike County, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at St. Joseph Hospice Care Center, surrounded by loved ones.

She was the daughter of Joe and Kelsie Charles Plymale.

She retired from Central Baptist Hospital after 44 years of hospital-based services. On Jan. 4, 1999, she re-entered the work force at 77 years of age as a Wal-Mart greeter on Nicholasville Road on the first day of its opening. She loved greeting the customers and considered her Wal-Mart co-workers as a part of her family. She loved her church family and was a faithful member of the Fayette Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clell Blackburn; two sons, Benjamin and Jerry Blackburn; and one brother, Clyde (Buster) Plymale.

She is survived by two daughters, Gail Ward of Lexington and Glendora (Thadus) Helvey of Pikeville; four grandchildren, Mark Blackburn, David (Diane) Blackburn, Brenda Spedding and Deidra (Steve) Kendrick; six great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Kamryn Blackburn, Savannah, John Robert and Elizabeth Spedding of Lexington, and Haley Wagner of Pikeville; two stepgrandchildren, Justin and Daniel Price of Lexington; four half-sisters, Beatrice Newsome, Helen Moore, Eula Lowe and Mildred Nichols; one half-brother, Harold Collins; one sister-in-law, Lorna Plymale; a special niece, Muriel Kosky; a very special friend, Barbara Blackburn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Blackburn Family Cemetery, Johns Creek. Arrangements are under direction of Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 3421 Harrodsburg Rd., Lexington, Ky.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fayette Church of Christ, 2700 Clays Mill Road, Lexington, KY 40503 and Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Dr., Lexington, KY 40504.

Doris Blankenship

Doris Ann Blankenship, 70, of Williamson, W.Va., formerly of Sprigg, W.Va., died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at Williamson Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Mingo County, W.Va., Feb. 14, 1942, the daughter of the late Clarence Rutherford and Stella McCoy Rutherford.

She was a homemaker.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Carly Rutherford; and four brothers, Larry Rutherford, Glen Rutherford, Darrell Rutherford and Jack Rutherford.

She is survived by three daughters, Carmella Kinder of Matewan, W.Va., and Angela Gooslin and Kelley Blankenship, both of Ransom; four brothers, Bobby Rutherford, Dave Rutherford, Jimmy Rutherford and Charles Rutherford; two sisters, Peggy Wolford and Donna Pruitt; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, in the Chambers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Murphy Cemetery, Merrimac, W.Va. Arrangements are under direction of Chambers Funeral Services Inc. of Matewan.

Visitation is from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday.

Thurman Chaffins

Thurman O. Chaffins, 71, of Willard/Plymouth, Ohio, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at the Ohio State University Medical Center.

He was born in Martin, April 25, 1941, the son of Cynthia Mosley Chaffins and the late Elder Mitchell Chaffins.

He was employed by MidWest Industries for 45 years, retiring in 2008, and was active in chartering their Needy Children's Fund. He was a follower of the Old Regular Baptist faith.

Besides his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, John Chaffins.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Sheila Chaffins and Michelle Kimberlin, both of Willard; four brothers, Frank Chaffins of Minnie, Merle Chaffins of New London, Ohio. Roger Chaffins and Jimmy Chaffins, both of Plymouth; two sisters, Loretta Tackett and Aretta Stumbo, both of Minnie; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Little Rebecca Old Regular Baptist Church, Plymouth, with elders of the church officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Plymouth. Arrangements are under direction of Secor Funeral Home of Willard.

Memorials may be made to MidWest Industries Needy Children's Fund.

Dorothy Opauski

Dorothy Opauski, 96, of North Matewan, W.Va., died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Williamson Memorial Hospital, Williamson, W.Va.

She was born in East Bethlehem, Pa., Jan. 22, 1916, the daughter of the late John and Anna Mox McCalloff.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Opauski.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by three sons, Joseph Opauski of Murrysville, Pa., Samuel “Sam” Opauski and James Opauski, both of North Matewan; six grandchildren, and a host of great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Chambers Funeral Home Chapel with Carl Butler officiating. Burial will follow in the Buskirk Cemetery, Buskirk. Arrangements are under direction of Chambers Funeral Services of Matewan, W.Va.

Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Jessie Poffenberger

Jessie Lee Varney Poffenberger, 94, of Delbarton, W.Va., died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at the South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital.

She was born in Mingo County, W.Va., Oct. 17, 1918, the daughter of the late Bill Varney and Camma Dalton.

Earlier in her life, she worked for Matewan Lumber Company, Johnson Furniture Company and the Mingo County Board of Education as a cafeteria cook at Delbarton Elementary School. She was of the Baptist faith.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nunley Poffenberger, whom she married in 1939. He died in 1993; two brothers, Everett Varney and Robert Dalton; and four sisters, Willa Belcher, Ruby Clark, Denny Rose and Westa Herrell.

She is survived by two children, Billy Lee Poffenberger of Morgantown, W.Va., and Betty Stacy of Delbarton; four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Chafin Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mitchell Bias and the Rev. John Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in the Williams Cemetery, Delbarton. Arrangements are under direction of Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton.

Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Roy Belcher

Roy O. Belcher, 79, of Prestonsburg, died Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Hospice Care Center, Hazard.

He was born in Pikeville, Sept. 24, 1933, the son of the late Ollie James and Elsie B. Mullins Belcher.

He was a coal truck driver, a U.S. Army veteran, the recipient of the Purple Heart, and a member of the Paintsville Chapter D.A.V.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ella King Belcher; two sons, Samuel Belcher and Rodney Belcher, both of Concord, Mich.; four daughters, Gail Belcher of Albion, Mich. Cherry Justice (Troy) of Pikeville, Louellen Colburn (Paul) of Concord and Belisha LeCrone (Charles) of East Jackson, Mich.; one brother, Charles Arnold Belcher (Nancy) of Albion; one sister, Victoria Simpson of Albion; 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and the mother of five of his children, Margaret Jane Damron.

Visitation was held Monday, March 4, in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel, Pikeville, with Levi Coleman officiating. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 9, in the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home Chapel, Albion. Burial will follow in Albion Memory Gardens, with D.A.V. military rites.

Lena Casebolt

Lena Collins Casebolt, 82, died Sunday, March 3, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 12, 1930, the daughter of the late Johnny and Sarah Collins.

She was retired, formerly a custodian for Pikeville Independent Schools. She was a member of the Anna O. Young Eastern Star and the Church of Christ.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Harold Casebolt; and one son, James H. Casebolt Jr.

She is survived by three daughters, Karen Lynn Lewis, Anita Kay Blackburn and Tammy Lynette May, all of Fords Branch; one brother, Elster Collins of Barberton, Ohio; one sister, Verna McPeek of Chloe Creek; eight grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Bob Werntz officiating. Burial will follow in the Fords Branch Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Freddie Justice

Freddie Justice, 63, of Justice, W.Va., died Friday, March 1, 2013, at his home.

He was born in Iaeger, W.Va., June 3, 1949, the son of the late Wells Drewey and Marie Toler Justice.

He was employed in construction and was a member of the Justice Tabernacle.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Lee Justice; three brothers, Benny Justice, James Justice and Kennis Justice; and one sister, Christine Blankenship.

He is survived by one son, Brian Justice of Hanover, W.Va.; four sisters, Joyce Browning of Wharncliffe, W.Va., Darlene Toler of Cleveland, Ohio, Sereta Harvey and Karen Hall, both of Justice; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, in the Justice Tabernacle Church, with the Rev. Randall Staton officiating. Burial will follow in the Davis Cemetery, Justice. Arrangements are under direction of Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert, W.Va.

Charles Maynard

Charles Burton "Chuck" Maynard, 86, of Battle Lake, Minn., died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center.

He was born in Phelps, Nov. 7, 1926, the son of John Wayne and Kentucky May (Charles) Maynard.

In 1942, he entered the U.S. Navy at the age of 15 and served during World War II in the European Theatre. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 12, 1946, at the age of 19.

Chuck and Bernice Ratliff were married on April 4, 1946, in Kentucky. They were the parents of four children, Charlie, Doug, Greg and Janelle. They resided for eight years in Elyria, Ohio, where Chuck worked for General Motors on the assembly line, then moved to Indiana where he worked for the G.P.F. Manufacturing Co. for several years.

In 1954, at age 28, a friend invited him on a Wednesday night to a Baptist Church where the guest speaker kept asking Chuck questions about his spiritual life. When Chuck told him he wanted the real thing, the man led him in prayer to receive Jesus which changed his life forever. In 1957, they moved to St. Paul where he was employed with Lindsay Water Softener.

Bernice passed away in 1971.

In 1974, Chuck and Dorothy Bergsten were married in St. Paul. They were the parents of one son, David. In 1978, they moved to Dallas to attend the Christ For The Nations Bible School to obtain a degree in theology. Chuck worked 10 years for Optic Electronics, manufacturing night vision equipment for the military. In 1988, Chuck and Dorothy moved to Battle Lake.

Dorothy passed away in 2005.

Chuck ministered in over 170 prisons with Champions For Life throughout the United States, the largest being 15, 000 prisoners in the Cook County Jail in Chicago. He led well over 1, 000 prisoners to Christ. God always supplied Chuck's needs. Chuck also ministered in Costa Rica, Grenada, and South Africa.

Chuck would leave his legacy to his family and friends, "I'm just a nobody trying to tell everybody about a somebody who will get them to heaven."

Chuck enjoyed fishing, old cars, Bible study, prison ministry, playing guitar and singing, doing one-arm push-ups, and auction sales.

He is survived by four children, Charlie (Linda) of South Carolina, Greg (Gail) of Battle Lake, Janelle of Texas and David (Sarah) of Texas; grandchildren, Michelle, Phillip, Jeff, Tracey, John, Melissa, Andrew, Sasha, Jessica, Allyson, Kelly and Ashlee; two great-grandchildren; two brothers; two sisters; along with numerous relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Bernice and Dorothy; one son, Doug in 1991; one grandson, Brett; and six brothers and sisters.

Visitation was held Saturday, March 2, in the Glende-Nilson Funeral Home Chapel, with a prayer service with Pastor Bert Holmquist, followed by military honors by the Paul Putnam American Legion Post 289 of Battle Lake.

Burial was in the Lakeview Cemetery, White Bear Lake, Minn. Arrangements were under direction of Glende-Nilson Funeral Home of Battle Lake.
