Janet Boggs

Janet Madeline Boggs, 57, of Eolia, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital, Hazard.

She was a Christian and a member of the Millstone Primitive Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dallas and Mary (Rutherford) Adams; five brothers, Dallas Adams Jr., Charles Lester Adams, Bobby Joe Adams, Ronnie Adams and Dewey Adams; three sisters, Mary Lynn Stephens, Lois Brock and Loretta Hall; and one grandson.

She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Richard Boggs; four daughters, Mary Maggard and Barbara Hammonds, both of Eolia, KY, Susan Boggs of Jenkins and Ashley Boggs of Pound, Va.; three brothers, Tom Adams, James Adams and Roy Lee Adams, all of Eolia; two sisters, Phyllis Eldridge of Eolia and Karen Stipes of Coeburn, Va.; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, in the Millstone Primitive Baptist Church with Elders Corbin Hampton, Trillis Adams, William Adams and Roy Adams officiating. Burial followed in the Adams Cemetery, Roberts Branch, Eolia. Arrangements were under direction of Baker Funeral Home of Pound.

Kenneth Compton II

Kenneth Wayne Compton II, 50, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2014.

He was born in Pike County, April 8, 1964, the son of Sue Carol Justice Compton Bartley and the late Kenneth Wayne Compton I.

Wayne worked for his own company, S&W trucking, for his dad at KC Trucking, and also worked as Pike County judge-executive assistant. He was a devoted son, father, brother, and uncle.

Besides his father, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lee and Ivy West Compton, and John Cecil and Stella Ethel Biliter Justice.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by one daughter, Savanna De'an Compton; one sister, Teresa Rena Taylor (David); two nieces, Amber Nicole (Josh) Chaney and Briteny LaTasha Taylor; three very special great-niece and nephews, Greyson Bryant Chaney, Jaxen Ryan Whitt and Anna Marie Chaney, all of Pikeville.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Bob Justice officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe Road. Arrangements are under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Joseph Hurley

Joseph E. Hurley, 89, of Stopover, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility in South Williamson.

He was born in Pike County, March 30, 1925, the son of the late James and Cora Harve Hurley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Raymond Paul Hurley; one daughter, Myrtle May Hurley; one brother, Samuel Hurley; and four sisters, Rosa Clusky, Cora Justice, Pauline Hurley and Betty Lell.

He was the last surviving sibling of his family.

Joseph worked 40 years for Norfolk Southern Railroad. He loved to ginseng, hunt and tend to his garden. He also enjoyed working puzzles and playing the banjo and guitar. He was of the Full Gospel Holiness faith.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Pearlie Blankenship Hurley of Stopover; four sons, Roy Roger Hurley of Stopover, Richard (Rebecca Sue) Hurley of Delbarton, W.Va., Randall Joe Hurley (Laura Coffey) and Glen Elbert Hurley, both of Georgetown; four daughters, Irene (Charles E.) Sturgeon of Stopover, twin daughters, Maryann Hurley Aylward of Georgetown and Joann (Randy) Mounts of Hurley, Va., Cinda (Michael) Blankenship of Stopover; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, Aug. 13, in the Jones & West Funeral Home Chapel with Tommy Conn, Bobby Conn and Steven Asbury officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va., with grandsons, Jackie Sturgeon, Joseph W. Hurley, Brandon Hunt, Billy Hunt and Roger W Hurley, and granddaughters' husbands, Shawn Cline and Richard Phelps, serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be sons-in-law, Michael Blankenship, Charles Sturgeon and Randy Mounts, and nephews and cousins.

Arrangements are under direction of Jones & West Funeral Home of Phelps.

Rebecca Layne

Rebecca Rachel Layne, 29, of Williamson, W.Va., died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, in Merrimac, W.Va.

She was born in Pikeville, Dec. 3, 1984, the daughter of Tamie Thacker Robinson and the late Malcolm Thacker.

She was a homemaker.

Besides her father, she was preceded in death by two brothers, David Thacker and Malcolm Jr. Thacker.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Jamey Layne; her stepfather, James Robinson; and one sister, Anitra Gilkey of Selmer, Tenn.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, in the Community Funeral Home Chapel with Brad Williamson and Grassy Freewill Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Thacker Cemetery, Raccoon. Arrangements are under direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.

Gregory McCary

Gregory Allen McCary, 42, of Jenkins, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at his home.

He was born in Pikeville, March 23, 1972, the son of Ella McCary and the late Leonard McCary.

He was disabled and was employed by Michael Rose.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Megan Paige McCary and Victoria McCary; one brother, Leonard Dwayne McCary; one sister, Cynthia Ann Napier; and two half-brothers, L. Belton McCary Jr. and Jimmy Allen McCary.

Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, Aug. 12, in the Poor Bottom Freewill Baptist Church with John Akers and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Jerry Ratliff

Jerry Ratliff, 61, of Elkhorn City, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at his home.

He was born in Detroit, Feb. 1, 1953, the son of the late Paul Ratliff and Dollie Stewart Ratliff.

He was a coal miner.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Timmy Ratliff.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry Matthews Ratliff; one son, Joseph Ratliff of Elkhorn City; three daughters, Kimberly Letner of Somerset, Karen Ratliff and Linda Ratliff, both of Elkhorn City; three brothers, William Goebel Ratliff of Elkhorn City, Steve Ratliff of Draffin and Butch Ratliff of Marrowbone; four sisters, Trish Meade of Marrowbone, Nora Coleman of Belcher, Amy Bartley of Elkhorn City and Genny Childress of Grundy, Va.; nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.

Patricia Richardson

Patricia Richardson, 84, of Collinsville, Ala., formerly of Pikeville, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, in Alabama.

Arrangements were incomplete and will be announced by Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Ermile Robinson

Ermile Looney Robinson, 75, of Belcher, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, at her home.

She was born in Belcher, Feb. 21, 1939, the daughter of the late Henry Thompson Looney and Polly Ratliff Looney.

She was a secretary at Pikeville Medical Center, and a member and sister in service at the Mountain View Church of Christ.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Robinson; and five brothers, Raymond Looney, Luther Looney, Gene Looney, Denis Looney and Tony Dale Looney.

She is survived by one stepson, Bruce Robinson of North Carolina; one brother, Jake Looney of Davenport, Fla.; and five sisters, Avanell Bevins and Justine Sullivan, both of Belcher, Avalene Mullins of Elyria, Ohio, Sharon Scarniac of Medina, Ohio, and Sheila Onkst of Lexington.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, in the Mountain View Church of Christ, Lick Creek, with Frank Crum, Joe Hall and Jim Ed Belcher officiating. Burial will follow in the Wilson Cemetery, Draffin. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.

Sharon Robinson

Sharon Kay Robinson, 53, of Fairborn, Ohio, formerly of Shelbiana, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2014, at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, Ohio.

She was born in Pike County, Sept. 15, 1960, the daughter of Betty Jo Williams Robinson and the late Robert Dean Robinson.

She was general manager of Dobb's Catering and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sons, Shawn Robinson and Richard Vaughn Menke; one daughter, Melinda Jo Menke; two sisters, Tammy Gibson and Robyn Biteman; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, in the Greasy Creek Freewill Baptist Church with Jimmy Jack Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in the R.H. Ratliff Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Jimmy Sincell Jr.

Jimmy Roger Sincell Jr., 33, of Shop Hollow, Red Jacket, W.Va., died Monday, Aug. 4, 2014, at his home.

He was born in Williamson, W.Va., April 13, 1981, the son of Sandra Kay Asbury Sincell of Hillsboro, Ohio, and the late Jimmy Roger Sincell Sr.

Besides his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Lewis and Betty Lou Sincell; his maternal grandparents, Juanita Marie DeHart and Walter Vernon Asbury II; one aunt, Kathern Daniels; and one cousin, Andrew Walter Asbury.

Jimmy Jr. was a graduate of Magnolia High School and a member of their football team. He also loved to play basketball and was an avid sports & Peyton Manning fan.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his daughter, MaKaylee Brooke Sincell of McCarr; two brothers, Christopher Dotson of Matewan, W.Va., and Josh Coleman of Newtown, W.Va.; two sisters, Cayla Breanna Sincell of Matewan and Pricella Hatfield Blevins of Lexington; two nephews, Jonathan Coleman and Devon Coleman, both of Matewan; one niece, Gabrielle Blevins of Lexington; special friends, Harold Dillon (Rhonda); girlfriend, Crystal Dotson; and a host of many friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, in the Pentecostal Tabernacle in Jesus’ Name, Edgarton, W.Va., with the Rev. Ronnie Wolford officiating. Burial followed in the Varney Cemetery, Lynn, W.Va., with Patrick Church, Aaron Sincell, Nick Daniels, Dewayne Cooper, Tommy Dale Wolford, Josh Coleman, Austin Asbury, Ronald Reynolds, Ronnie Hatfield, Bobby Dillon and Ryan Perkins serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Pete Lewis Sincell, Walter Asbury, Drewey Sincell, Dewayne Crum, Shane Dillon, Floyd Church and Scotty Baisden. Arrangements were under direction of Jones & West Funeral Home of Phelps.

Cody Smith

Cody Dewayne Smith, 21, of Shelbiana, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at his home.

He was born in Pike County, Sept. 4, 1992, the son of Paula Ann Justice Wilson and the late John Paul Smith.

He was disabled and a member of Victory Temple Church.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his stepfather, Ron Wilson; his maternal grandparents, Denville and Julia Justice; his paternal grandmother, Glema Thacker; his great-grandmother, Lorine Damron; six brothers and sisters, Johnathan Andrew Smith, John Allen Smith, Rio Curtis Hamilton, Rea Dawn Hamilton, Brittany Hamilton and Becky Hamilton.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, in the Greasy Creek Freewill Baptist Church with Clinard Ratliff and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Justice Cemetery, Toler Creek. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday with special services at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
