Mary F. Gipson
Mary F. Gipson, 88, of Elizabethtown, died Thursday, December 10, 2009 at Hardin Memorial Hospital. The Edmonson County native was born December 24, 1920. She was retired from General Electric, was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and was baptized at Ollie Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Gipson, her parents, Grover and Tandie Sanders Kersey, by two sons, Jimmy R. Gipson and Donald Gipson and by 4 brothers and sisters. She is survived by one son Richard (Nancy) Gipson of Elizabethtown, one daughter Barbara Manco of Elizabethtown, 17 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren. The funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at Brown Funeral Home. Burial will be in Ollie cemetery in Edmonson County. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Martha Lou "Marty" Sparrow
Martha Lou "Marty" Sparrow, 78 of Elizabethtown, died Monday, December 14, 2009 at her residence. She was a native of Louisville and was a retired Real Estate Agent with Century 21 in El Paso, TX. She passed peacefully in her sleep with her family by her side. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alex and Anna Mae Bohannon; one son, John W. Sparrow; two brothers, George Bohannon and Donald Bohannon and a sister, Grace. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Edward A. Sparrow, Sr.; two sons, Edward A. Sparrow, Jr. of Vine Grove and Harold W. Sparrow of AZ; four daughters, Diana Furlough of VA, Vicki Shelby of LA, Sandra Smith of VA and Jackie Bennett of MD; one brother, John Bohannon of Louisville; one sister, Betty Blair of Louisville; 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Dr. Chad Brand officiating. Burial will follow in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and continue after 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of Contributions to Kosair Charities.

Connie Cottrill
Connie Cottrill, 68 of Elizabethtown, died Saturday, December 12, 2009 at her residence. She was a native of Jefferson County and retired after 25 years from Hardin Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Evelyn O'Brien Pike and one brother, Edward David Pike. She is survived by two daughters, Jennifer Parrott Stafford and her husband Patrick of Cecilia and Stevie Parrott Hornback of Elizabethtown; one son, Matthew Parrott and his wife Sandy of Ashville, NC; one sister, Mary (Ralph) Phillips Bullerdick of Greenville, IN; four grandchildren, Christopher Peters, Rebekah Hornback, Thomas Stafford and Christian Parrott and a great grandchild, Jadelyn Peters. Funeral services will be private. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home.

James D. "Jim" Richardson
James D. "Jim" Richardson, 62, of Eastview, died Saturday, December 5, 2009 at his residence. He was a native of Summit and a member of Summit United Methodist Church. He was a farmer, a substitute teacher for Hardin County schools and a baseball coach and commissioner for Hardin County Baseball and Sofball Association. He also loved being with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Glenn Richardson. He is survived by his wife Kathie Mattingly Richardson, one son Jamie (Tausha) Richardson of Stephensburg, one daughter, Gena (Kyle) Baker of Sonora, his mother, Julia Richardson of Summit; one sister, Phyllis (Norman) Lasley of Glendale and three grandchildren, Bailey, Christopher and Trey. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brown Funeral Home with Rev.Mike Walker and Rev. Rose Marie Jones officiating. Burial will be in Summit Methodist Church cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Hansell Peters
Hansell Peters, 65 of Elizabethtown, died Monday, May 31, 2010 at his home. He was a native of Hardin County and a member of Open Valley Baptist Church. He was a retired truck driver. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Lou Peters; his parents, Bertha Brown Peters and Eddie Peters and a sister, Violet Peters. He is survived by his wife, Patty Zulevich Peters; four sons, Stephen (Carol) Peters of Elizabethtown, Roy "Moe" Peters of Cecilia, Darrell "Mouse" (Christine) Peters of Huntley, IL and Robbie (Jennie) McFadden of Rineyville; one daughter, Deena (Terry) Bradley of Hodgenville; one brother, Bobby Wendell (Renate) Peters of Cecilia; five sisters, Bonnie (Donald) Lucas, Alice (Aubrey) Elliott, Regina (Damon) Goodman and Emily (Ricky) Embry all of Cecilia and Iona (Garry) Waddell of Elizabethtown; 13 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Open Valley Baptist Church with Rev. Malcolm Doyle and Rev. Jeff Doyle officiating. Burial will follow in Open Valley cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Brown Funeral Home is incharge of arrangements.

Roger Adkins
Roger Adkins, 74, of Big Clifty, died Friday, June 4, 2010, at Riverside Manor Nursing Home in Calhoun, KY. He was a native of Butler County, retired from Boise Cascade Company after 41 years of service, and a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Kate Coleman Adkins; one sister, Hazel Atherton; and one brother, Rollie Adkins. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Charlene Adkins of Big Clifty; three sons, Randy (Connie) Adkins of Big Clifty, Eric (Karen) Adkins of Hodgenville, and Todd (Mandy) Adkins of Big Clifty; three brothers, Robert Adkins of Johnson City, TN, Rodney Adkins of Livia, KY, and Roy Adkins of Utica, KY; one sister, Hilda Delaney of Hartford, KY; ten grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. The funeral is Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmie Sutton officiating. Burial to follow at Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Visitation is Sunday 4-8 p.m. and after 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

James Ralph Vertrees
James Ralph Vertrees, 89, of Rineyville, died Sunday, June 6, 2010, at Hardin Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Hardin County, a World War II veteran, charter member of the American Legion Post 113, a member of Cecilia United Methodist Church, and retired as a maintenance supervisor from the Armor and Engineer Board at Ft. Knox. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Clara Lucille Wilson Vertrees; his parents, Benjamin Burnice and Eula Pawley Vertrees; and three brothers, Eugene L., George W., and Shelby F. Vertrees. He is survived by a son, Michael T. (Melesa) Vertrees of Elizabethtown; two daughters, Joyce (Bob) Hicks of Camden, AR, and Vivian (Al) Oertle of Flaherty; four grandsons, Wyatt (Tiffany) Vertrees and Brent Vertrees of Elizabethtown, Dr. Lucas Thompson of Washington D.C., and Benjamin Hicks of Tampa, FL; a great-granddaughter, Isabelle Vertrees; two sisters, Bernice Boothe of Rineyville and Betty Alvey of Elizabethtown; one brother, Richard (Sue Carol Hatfield) Vertrees of Rineyville; two sisters-in-law, Geneva Meredith Vertrees of Louisville and Laverne Patterson Vertrees of New Albany, IN; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Greg Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Rineyville cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday from 3-8 p.m. and after 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Thomas William Murphy
Thomas William "Sonny" Murphy, 71 of Hudson, passed on Sunday, June 6, 2010 at Norton Hospital in Louisville. He was a native of Laurel, MD, was a member of Vertrees Baptist Church and was a retired Baptist Minister. He was preceded in death by his parents, William R. and Mildred B. Thompson Murphy and a sister, Beverly Ellinger. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patricia Joy Murphy; five sons, Bryan Murphy, John Murphy, James Murphy and Patrick Murphy all of Maryland and Thomas Murphy of California; 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. EDT at Vertrees Baptist Church with Bro. John Boone officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Brown Funeral Home and continue after 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of Contributions to American Cancer Society.

Earl Eugene Linkous, Sr.
Earl Eugene Linkous, Sr., 68 of Elizabethtown, died Monday, May 31, 2010 at his home. He was a native of Surgoinsville, TN, served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam and was a Supply Technician at Godman Airfield at Ft. Knox for 18 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey Elmer and Ida Dorthy Whittamore Linkous. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Mary Lou Joyner Linkous; one son, Earl Linkous, Jr. of Elizabethtown; three daughters, Sonjia Fletcher of Luttrell, TN, Teresa Rosa of Knoxville, TN and Charity Wiegand of Fayetteville, NC; three brothers, Coy Leroy Linkous, Dewey Paul Linkous and Joe Lee Linkous all of Tennessee; one sister, Hazel Baker of TN; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A Graveside service will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Kentucky Veterans cemetery Central in Radcliff with Rev. Les Bullock officiating. Visitation will be from 11 to 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home.

Orien Chafin
Orien Chafin, 83, of Elizabethtown, died Friday, May 21, 2010 at Hardin Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Martin County, an Air Force Veteran and a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He was a deacon for many years in Inez and Warfield in Martin County. He taught school at Sheldon Clark High School in Martin County and taught four years at Prestonburg Community College. He was a former columnist for the Mountain Citizen Newspaper in Martin County for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents and 8 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Mary Wanda Williamson Chafin, one son, Gerald (Sonja) Chafin of Columbia, a daughter, Felicia (Greg) Harry of Hodgenville, a brother, Mike Chafin, Jr. of Kissimee, FL and four grandchildren, Allison Chafin, Stephen Chafin, Hannah Harry and Ethan Harry. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Brown Funeral Home with Dr. Charles Darland officiating. Burial will be in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 5:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday and after 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
