Allene Allen Craddock, 96, of Elizabethtown, died Monday, October 4, 2010 at her residence. Ms Craddock attended University of Louisville and Bowling Green Business University, where she received a degree in Business and Accounting. Ms Craddock served as accountant and office manager with Brewer Chevrolet for a number of years. She married Royce Craddock and partnered with him in Craddock Chevrolet in Radcliff. Following his death, Allene was able to acquire the dealership and became the first woman Chevrolet dealer in the state of Kentucky. In 1965, she earned Time Magazine's Quality Dealership Award. She maintained a successful business until 1974, when she sold the dealership. During her years in business in Radcliff, she was very active in the community, serving as director of Ft. Knox National Bank; director of Radcliff Chamber of Commerce, trustee of the Old Kentucky Home Council Boy Scouts of America and was active and held a lifetime membership in the Association of the U.S. Army. Ms. Craddock was a loyal member of Memorial Methodist Church and had served at their chairman of the administrative board and board of trustees. Members of the church recall many instances where she was a big part of the solution in controversies and was admired for her winsome way of complete honesty while constantly looking for the best possible outcome. In 1976, Ms Craddock was elected as State Representative for the 25th district of Kentucky and served five consecutive terms. During her tenure, she served as a member of the Rules Committee, Appropriations and Revenue Committee and Labor and Industry Committee. Ms Craddock was pivotal in securing funding for the Elizabethtown Community College's Academic/Technical Building, as well as a building for Elizabethtown Technical College. She served on the state's education committee for six years and the North Central Education Foundation Board for more than 25 years and gave years of service to the Advisory Board of ECTC. Since it opened in 1954, Ms Craddock was a strong supporter of Hardin Memorial Hospital. From raising funds for the original landscaping, to supporting healthcare legislation, she advocated for the hospital and medical community throughout her life. She volunteered many hours of commitment to and was the driving force behind the Red Cross Blood Program in Hardin County and served on the Red Cross Board for many years. The Old Kentucky Home Boy Scout Council benefited from her many fund-raising efforts as did the Crippled Children's Fund, which she chaired for several years. Ms Craddock was a founding member of Metro United Way-Hardin County and has served in a variety of Volunteer positions since that time, including Advisory Board member, Allocations Committee and Individual Giving Chair. Constantly seeking ways to enhance leadership within the community, Ms Craddock was instrumental in starting the Leadership Elizabethtown program some twenty years ago. Each year, Leadership Elizabethtown honors her by bestowing the "Allene Craddock Leadership Award" to the outstanding member of the leadership class. She remained the Honorary Chairman ot the Leadership Elizabethtown Board of Directors until her death. Ms Craddock truly lived a life of service to others and at her age of 96 years was still constantly looking for ways to enhance the efficacy of business or professions and improve the quality of life in the community and state.
