Ada Jane Groves Conley, 84, of Shelbyville, KY and formerly of Glasgow, KY, died Thursday, July 31, 2003 after a brief illness at the University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville. Mrs. Conley was a native of Greensburg, KY and the daughter of the late Jim Clarence and Mary Oak Groves. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Kentucky State College. She pursued graduate study work at Indiana University and Western Kentucky University, where she received her Master of Arts degree. She was a school teacher and taught for 41 years in the Green County, Barren County, Hart County, Glasgow City and Cincinnati, OH public school systems. Following her retirement, she had lived in Shelbyville for the last 13 years. She was a member of National Education Association, Kentucky Education Association and Teachers Retirement System of Kentucky. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Glasgow, where she had previously served as an assistant secretary, directress and pianist/organist for the Young Peoples Choir for 23 years. She was also a member of the Senior Choir and the Church Aid Club. As a resident of Shelbyville, she had been a member of Clay Street Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Russell Conley, Jr. of Shelbyville; two daughters, Lavonia Darlene Conley of Indianapolis who is a teacher in the Indianapolis Public School System and Debra Carey Jordan of Shelbyville who is a teacher in the Shelby County Public School System; one sister, Mary Gladys (Junior) Cowherd of Greensburg; one son-in-law, Albert L. Jordan, Sr. of Shelbyville; two grandchildren, Albert Lawrence "A.J." Jordan, Jr. and Carey-Jo La'Ren Jordan, both of Shelbyville; one sister-in-law, Henrietta Groves of Greensburg; two brothers-in-law, Countee (Mabel) Conley and Edwyn P. (Ann) Conley, both of Cincinnati and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Service of Remembrance is scheduled at 7 p.m., EDT, on Sunday, August 3, 2003 at the Clay Street Baptist Church in Shelbyville, KY. Honorary pallbearers for this service are Maureen Ashby, Daisy Dale, Natholee Harris, Kenny Harris, Janice Harris, Cathy Davis, Rev. Eugene Peete, Linda Peete, Terri Jones, Letti Curry, Anita Grant, Edwina Stoner and the Deacons of the Clay Street Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church, 611 South Lewis Street, Glasgow, Kentucky on Tuesday, August 5, 2003 at 1 p.m., CDT. Visitation will be at the church on Monday, August 4 from 4-8 p.m., CDT. Honorary pallbearers for Tuesday are Deacon Joe D. Bush, Deacon Herschel Caudle and Deacon John Paul Childress. Active pallbearers are Deacon Theodore Ellis, Deacon Thelbert Grainger, Deacon William Twyman, Deacon William Webb, Trustee Fred Bailey, Trustee Winston Bailey and Trustee Erron Trigg. Honorary flowerbearers are the members of the First Baptist Church Church-Aid Club, Genobia Caudle and Marie Mason. Active flowerbearers are Patricia Bransford, Nellie R. Buford, Josephine Grainger, Alma Jean Glover, Terri Jones, Mary L. Rhodes, Christine Sublett, Nancy Trigg, Lou F. Twyman, Cecilia Wells and Deborah Sue Childress.

Doretha Ann Beach Perry, 57, of Shelbyville, died Friday, May 30, 2003 following an illness at Hospice and Palliative In-Patient Care in Louisville. She was a native of Shelbyville, KY and the daughter of Mary Catherine Thomas Beecham and the late Charles Beecham and the late Raymond Lee "Goat" Beach, Sr. She was a graduate of Lincoln Institute. She worked for General Electric Company for 18 years and was a member of the Centennial Missionary Baptist Church in Christianburg. She attended and participated in many churches throughout her lifetime. She was well known in the community and was a loving and supporting daughter, mother and friend. She cherished being a grandmother.

In addition to her father and her stepfather who raised her, Doretha was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe Douglas Slaughter and Cal Stanley "Stan" Beach.

Doretha leaves to cherish her memory her mother, Mary Catherine Thomas Beecham of Louisville; three daughters, Pamela (Thomas) Beach-Marshall of Lawrenceville, GA, and Claudia Fountaine (Dana) Crittendon and Cassandra Renee Butler, both of Shelbyville, KY; two sons, Dontas Rochelle (Holly) Marshall and Monzel William Marshall, both of Jeffersonville, IN; her grandfather, Raymond Carey Beach of Taylorsville, KY; four sisters, Wanda (R.C.) Jones of Finchville, KY, Etta Beach of Shelbyville, KY, Laticia (Dennis) Evans of Simpsonville, KY and Doriscella Beach (Raymond) Lee of Chicago, IL; four brothers, Raymond Lee Beach, Jr., Willis (Paula) Beach and Bruce Beach, all of Shelbyville, KY and Al N. (Connie) Beach of Grand Rapids, MI; ten grandchildren; her aunt, Nancy Thomas of Shelbyville, KY and seven uncles, William (Florentine) Thomas, Alex (Esther) Thomas and Ernest Thomas, all of Shelbyville, KY, Carl Edward (Pauline) Beach of St. Charles, LA, John Allen Beach and Wilbur Beach, both of Shelbyville, KY and Willis (Janice) Beach of Teaneck, NJ and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

William J. "Bill" Moffett, 77, of Bellevue, OH, died Tuesday, September 2, 2003 at Memorial Hospital in Fremont, OH. He was a native of Shelby County, KY and the son of the late David V. and Estelle Wiley Moffett. He was married for 51 years to Lorraine Dunaway Moffett, who preceded him in death on August 9, 2003. A Bellevue resident for 45 years, he was retired from Armstrong Air Conditioning, Inc. and was a member of the Bellevue Eagles and Bellevue Moose Lodge. He loved the outdoors, fishing and gardening, but his favorite activity was going to yard sales and flea markets. He enjoyed woodworking in his own little shop in back of his house and made canes to sell. He participated in a large flea market in Kenton, OH every year, selling his little treasures and his canes. A kind and loving person, he loved life and lived it fully. In addition to his wife and his parents, he was preceded in death by five sons, two grandchildren, one great-grandchild, a brother and a sister.

Survivors include two daughters, Opal Beat of Attica, OH and Christina "Chris" Austin of Bellevue, OH; one son, Gerald L. Moffett of Marblehead, OH; one stepdaughter, Jean Gent of Huron, OH; one stepson, William B. Osborne of Lawrenceburg, KY; four sisters, Martha Summerland of Norwalk, OH, Alyine Dunn of Frankfort, KY, Katherine Oliver of Frankfort, KY and Jane Eads of Bellevue, OH; four brothers, James Moffett of Louisville, KY, Robert "Bob" Moffett of Bellevue, OH, David Lee Moffett of Frankfort, KY and Howard Rae Moffett of Waddy, KY; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Rev. Wade H. Hughes will officiate at the funeral service on Saturday. Pallbearers will be Joey Yates, Duane Tincher, Gomer Caudill, Mike Thomas, Eddie Beeler and Leonard Shelton.

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth "Libby" Beach Wright

Mary Elizabeth "Libby" Beach Wright, 67, of Shelbyville, died Saturday, September 6, 2003 at the home of her son in Louisville, KY following an illness. Mrs. Wright was a native of Shelby County, KY and the daughter of the late R. W. and Mary Alice Samuel Beach. She was a homemaker throughout her lifetime, having devoted her time to raising her children. She loved to work with flowers and won second place in the Bondurant Heights Flower Contest this year. She was a member of the Sonrise Valley Church in Waddy, KY. She was the widow of Bobby Wright, who preceded her in death last December after 43 years of marriage.

Survivors include four daughters, Pamela Wright, Sharon Martinez, Karen Evans and Vicky Lee Wright, all of Shelbyville, KY; six sons, Robert B. Wright of Shelbyville, KY, Donald Wright of Louisville, KY, Ricky Nelson Wright of Frankfort, KY, Charles Edward Wright of Eminence, KY, David Darnell Wright of Carrollton, KY and Keith Troy Wright of Louisville, KY; four sisters, Margaret Nolan and Georgia Beecham, both of Louisville, KY and Barbara Marshall and Minnie Dotson, both of Shelbyville, KY; four brothers, James Edward Beach and Thomas Beach of Shelbyville, KY, Charles Beach of Louisville, KY and John Beach of Shelbyville, KY; sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Rev. Carter Barnett of the Sonrise Valley Church in Waddy, KY will deliver the eulogy. Honorary pallbearers will be John Evans, Tony Allen, Tommy Taylor, Arthur Stone, Larry White and Luis Martinez. Active pallbearers will be Earl Marshall, Jr., Jeff Morton, John Beach, Jr., Danny Beach, William Beach, Jr. and Wilbur Davis.

Bennie Lee Hawkins, 63, died unexpectedly at home with his friends, Bill and Jeannie Morgan, on Saturday, September 27, 2003 in Shelbyville, KY. Mr. Hawkins was a native of Shelby County, KY and the son of the late Earl T. and Ruby Rucker Hawkins. He had been a farmer, but was better known as a simple man. He was preceded in death by one sister, Liz Gaines and three brothers, Sonny Hawkins, Butch Hawkins and Ray Hawkins.

Survivors include one daughter, Debbie (Mark) Brooks of Shelbyville, KY; three sons, Timothy E. (Lora) Hawkins of Shelbyville, KY, Stephen "John" (Sandie) Hawkins of Frankfort, KY and Charles Hawkins of Waddy, KY; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rev. Wade H. Hughes will deliver the eulogy.

Mrs. Anna C. Patterson

Anna C. Newton Patterson, 85, of Shelbyville, passed away at her home on Saturday, October 11, 2003 after an illness. She was the widow of Edward Theodore Patterson, who preceded her in death in 1994 after 50 years of marriage. Mrs. Patterson was a native of Shelby County, KY and the daughter of the late Katie and John Henry Newton, Sr. She spent her childhood in Louisville, where she graduated from Central High School. She was baptized as a child at Beargrass Baptist Church in Louisville. She worked at the Blue Boar Cafeteria in Louisville immediately out of high school. After graduating from nursing school, she worked both at the former King's Daughters Hospital in Shelbyville and as a private duty nurse. She was a poet from her childhood. She had her own radio broadcast show on WCND Radio in Shelbyville for over 20 years on Saturday afternoons. She was a 36-year member of the International Order of the King's Daughters and Sons Amanda Smith Circle. She was very active in the HOST Program. She managed the skating rink in Shelbyville for seven years. She was awarded the Black Poet and Composers of Shelbyville Award at the 3rd Annual Black Achievement Awards Program in 1990. She received the Golden Poet Award in 1991. She was a Kentucky Colonel. She was referred to as "Momma Ann" by many. She was instrumental in the distribution of "The Upper Room Daily Devotional Guide" to hundreds of people. She was a member of the New Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher. She also attended the New Covenant Congregational Church. She was preceded in death by six brothers and two sons.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann (Rev. James) Booker of Shelbyville and Crevella (Rev. Calvin) Bell of Drakesboro; three sons, Samuel (Sue) Patterson and Larry Patterson of Shelbyville and Albert E. Patterson, Sr. of Louisville; 23 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Rev. Joseph Humphrey and Rev. Kilen Gray will each deliver eulogies at the funeral services on Wednesday. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the International Order of King's Daughters and Sons, Edward Farris, Lee Evans, Johnnie Harris, Johnny Walker, David Stone and Ralph Stone. Active pallbearers will be Albert Patterson, Jr., Dwayne Marshall, Chris Patterson, Ben Farris, Mickel Beach, David Neighbors, Raymond Beach and Wilbur Beach.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include one sister, Megan Webster of Shelbyville; one brother, Hunter McKinney Hall of Shelbyville; his maternal grandparents, Mary Helen and Dewey Wyatt of Shelbyville; his paternal grandmother, Linda L. Couch McKinney of Liberty; his paternal great-grandmother, Ethel Purdue of Liberty; aunts and uncles, Dewey Thomas Wyatt, Jr., Jelena Perry, Jamie Wyatt and Leon and Michelle McKinney, all of Shelbyville, Brian and Karen McKinney and Shawna Renee McKinney, all of Liberty; many great aunts and uncles, other relatives and friends.

Bro. Richard Curtsinger will officiate at the funeral service.
