Cecil D. Bell

Cecil D. Bell, 94, died Nov. 30, 2004. He was the wife of Clara Elizabeth Innes Bell

He was born May 25, 1910, in Bourbon County and was the son of Mary Varner and John H. Bell. He graduated from Millersburg Military Institute in 1928, where he was captain of his ROTC company and captain of the basketball team, which won the state tournament.

He graduated from the University of Kentucky with a B.S. degree in agriculture and was a two-year letterman in basketball having played for Adolph Rupp's first team. He operated the scoreboard at the press table for UK basketball games for 33 years.

While a student at UK, he was president of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, captain of his ROTC Company, vice-president of the Pan Hellenic Council and a member of Scabbard and Blade Honorary Military Fraternity.

He served as a deacon at Central Christian Church for 40 years and was a representative from the church on the Garth Educational Fund of the Lexington Theological Seminary.

He was a member of Fayette County Farm Bureau, of which he served as president in 1945 and 1946 and served as director of the Bureau for 15 years. He was also honored by the Gamma Sigma Delta Honorary Agriculture Fraternity as an outstanding citizen of agriculture.

He was a former member on the board of the UK Alumni Association for two terms, a member of Spindletop Hall, which he served as director for four terms, and director emeritus of the University Alumni Century Fund.

He was honored by the Georgetown Farm City Committee as a Pioneer Farmer. He was director emeritus of the Burley-Tobacco Auction Warehouse.

In 1944, he won the WHAS Home and Farm Improvement Campaign for Kentucky and Southern Indiana sponsored by The Courier Journal and Louisville Times.

In 1943, his farm was chosen by the University Experiment Station as one of 10 sample farms in Kentucky and as their tobacco enterprise demonstration farms by using the best method.

He was a farmer and breeder of purebred registered Angus cattle. He was a member of the Lexington Optimist Club and the UK K-Men's Association.

Survivors include two children, Cecil D. Bell Jr., of Georgetown, and Julianne Bell Bloomfield, of Lexington; a daughter-in-law, Kay Shropshire-Bell; four grandchildren, Ann Bell (Mac) Stone, John Cecil (Melissa) Bell, Jamie Bloomfield and Josh (Ellen) Bloomfield; and two great-grandchildren, Riette and Isabell Bloomfield.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Reynolds Bell, of Paris, John H. Bell Jr., of Lynden, Wash.; a niece Mary Sue (Dick) Giljam, of George-town; and a nephew John Reynolds (Pat) Bell, of Paris.

Services will be private.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Central Christian Church Memorial Fund or Hospice of the Bluegrass.

Harriet Lyle Herndon

Harriet Lyle Herndon, 85, of Leesburg Road, died Dec. 1, 2004, at her home. She was the wife of the late Lun Ferguson Herndon.

A farmer and former employee of Bache Securities, she was a native of Cincinnati. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She was also a Life Master Duplicate Bridge player and world traveler.

Survivors include two daughters, Anne Montgomery Herndon and Elizabeth Herndon Griffith; a granddaughter, Rebecca Lyle (Shane) Benton; two great-grandchildren, Austin Lyle and Emilee Morgan Benton, all of Georgetown; a niece, Dabney Joyner, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and a nephew, Philip Mulholland, of Lexington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Donald Johnson Lyle and Anne Montgomery Robinson, and a sister, Mary Lyle.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Johnson's Funeral Home, with Chaplain Gary McQuain officiating.

Burial will be in Georgetown Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Austin and Shane Benton, Philip Mulholland, Richard Lawrence Sherman, Robert Joyner and Joe Ireland.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Dec. 3, 2004, at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Bellewood Presbyterian Home for Children or your favorite charity.

Debra Ann Davidson

Debra Ann Davidson, 46, of Florence, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at Georgetown Community Hospital. She was the wife of Paul Davidson.

She was born in Scott County on May 31, 1958, and was the daugther of the late Russell and Sallie Lucille Gillispie Cummins. She was the office manager for Leggett & Platt and attended Southland Christian Church of Lexington.

Survivors include a son, William Christopher Davidson, of the U.S. Navy.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Darlene Cummins.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at Tucker, Yocum & Wilson Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens.

Casket bearers will be Otis Kennedy, Russell Carper, Lawrence Riley, Frank Daugherty, Mark Davidson and Steve Windle.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Paul Pearson Abrams

Paul Pearson Abrams, 82, of Owenton, died Dec. 3, 2004, at the V.A. Medical Center in Lexington. He was the husband of Marie Walters Abrams.

He was born in Owen County on Nov. 1, 1922, and was the son of the late Wolf and Hallie B. Bramlett Abrams. He was a retired Lexington firefighter, farmer and Marine veteran of World War II. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church and was an avid University of Kentucky fan.

Survivors include two sons, Don (Nanette) Abrams, and Lynn (Mary) Abrams, both of Lexington; three stepsons, Steve (Charlene) Whitlock, Gary Whitlock, both of Georgetown, and Chuck Whitlock, of Stamping Ground; two stepdaughters, Kim Whitlock and Rachel (Thomas) Boykin, both of Stamping Ground; a brother, Atmore (Doris) Abrams, of Owen county; a grandchild, Troy Adams; a great-grandchild, Dylan Abram; and several step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 7, 2004, at Harmony Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert Miller officiating.

Casketbearers were Troy, Kenny, Gary Dean, Jeff Abrams, Thomas Boykin, Biage and Darrell Hunley, Steve Whitlock, Gary Whitlock and Chuck Whitlock.

Burial was in the Abrams family cemetery.

George Alven Nash

George Alven Nash, 80, of Frankfort and formerly of Georgetown, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at his home.

He was a retired Hoover Universal employee and World War II Army veteran. He was a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., and was the son of the late Phoshion Wesley and Rosa Lee Downey Nash and was a member of the Teamsters Local Union #651.

Survivors include a son, Oney C. (Lee Dell) Vanlandingham, of Georgetown; two granddaughters, April (Scott) Gibbons, of Lexington, and Alissa Vanlandingham, of Georgetown; and three great-grandchildren, Scott and Sean Carter Gibbons and Clay Parker Vanlandingham.

Graveside services and burial were held Dec. 10, 2004, in Camp Nelson National Cemetery with Andrew Glenn.

Johnson's Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Frances Ware Nash

Frances Ware Nash, died Friday, Dec.10, 2004, in Danville. She was the wife of the late Warren O. Nash Sr.

She was born Oct. 21, 1907, in Georgetown. She was the loving widow of Warren O. Nash Sr., a prominent Georgetown businessman who died in 1978, just four months short of their 50th wedding anniversary. She lived most of her 97 years on East Main Street in Georgetown, where she was born. She was the fifth generation in her family to live in Scott County. Her ancestors were very active in the 19th-century development of Scott County, Georgetown and Georgetown College. She was often called upon for her knowledge of the people, homes, and events of early Georgetown. She particularly had a passion for East Main Street and for the Ware farm on Old Oxford Pike, which she and her late sister, Ruth Ware Huber, inherited from their parents. Her accolades varied from being voted in school "The Most Beautiful" to being a sub for the 1925 girls' state basketball championship team to being recognized later as an outstanding church and community volunteer.

A member of the Georgetown First Presbyterian Church all of her life, she and her husband served as superintendents of Sunday School and taught classes for several decades. Fifty years ago, she was among the 11 charter members who started the Georgetown Little Garden Club. She was also a charter member of the historical society. A voracious reader, she spent many years volunteering at the Georgetown Public Library and was honored for her service there. She attended Georgetown College and is a past member of the Scott County Woman's Club and the Lafayette Club.

Survivors include a daughter, Bettie (Ken) Brakebill, of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; a son, Dr. Warren O. Nash Jr. (Janet Clayton), of Danville; four grandchildren, Warren Nash III, of Lexington, Dr. Kenneth Clayton (Tammy) Nash, of Pittsburgh, Frances Brakebill (Mark) Lynch, of Phoenix, and Kenneth Warren (Emily) Brakebill of San Francisco; nine great-grandchildren, Ashley and Kristin Nash, of Georgetown, Carsyn and Ryan Nash, of Pittsburgh, Mark Carrick, Jordan and Luke Lynch, of Phoenix, and Sydney and Benjamin Nash Brakebill, of San Francisco; a brother-in-law, Lee Huber, of Orlando; a niece, Sandra Huber (Van) Donnan, of Orlando; a nephew, John Huber, of Orlando; a great-nephew, David Powers, of Orlando; and great-niece, Alison (Ian) Kleinert and their son, Colin, of New York.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church in Georgetown, with the Rev. C. Patterson Clark Jr. officiating.

Burial will be in Georgetown Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Mike Leaverton, Gordon Duke, Anson Burlingame, Duke Owens, Hugh Wyatt and Frank Penn.

Honorary bearers will be Earlene Arnett, Bonnie Neuville, Bill Hays, Howard Wiles, Ed Lynch, Horace Gaines, Brian Ellis, John Ward, Robert Milward, Tom Shuff, Ted Oldham, Joe Hoffman, Leo Reed, Spence Johnson, Charlie Jo Finley and Herndon Price.

Visitation will be 3-6 p.m. Dec. 12 at Johnson's Funeral Home.
