Fred Gross, 71, Melvin, died Oct. 8, 2004, at his home.
He was born May 8, 1933, in Dayhoit to John and Cleo (Philpot) Gross. He married Evelyn Bosman on Jan. 22, 1955.
He worked in Detroit as a window cleaner for City Building Window and Continental Building Cleaning.
Gross is survived by his wife of 50 years, Evelyn Gross; five children: Wayne and his wife, Linda; Ann, Michael, Fred and Jeanette and husband, Keith; 11 grandchildren, one great grandchild, a sister: Ruby Cobbler, three brothers: James, John D. and Floyd; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by several brothers.
A gathering of family and friends was held Sunday at Carman Funeral Home in Brown City with funeral services at 8 p.m.

Edith Haley, 79, Harlan, died Sept. 16, 2004, at the Harlan Nursing Home.
Visitation will be Sunday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Edith Scott Haley, 79, Harlan, died Sept. 16, 2004.
A native of Harlan County, she was a member of Elcomb Baptist Church, and was retired from the Harlan County Solid Waste Department as a bookkeeper with over 10 years of service.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Edmond Rodefer; her parents, Steve Scott and Orpha Campbell Scott; a sister, Lana C. Scott; and two brothers: Albert and Carl Scott.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Haley, Harlan; a daughter, Sheila Middleton and husband, Rocky, Harlan; three brothers: Samuel C. Scott, Daleville, Ala.; Lloyd Scott, Washington; and Elmer Scott, Calif.; a sister, Urma Burnette, Lexington; two grandchildren: Melody McKee and husband, Brian Travis, Pikeville; and Rocky Allen Middleton, Harlan; two great-grandchildren: Brycen Travis McKee and Hannah C. Jones Middleton; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation is Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Mount Pleasant Funeral Home with the Rev. Josh Hensley and the Rev. Brian Travis McKee officiating.
Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Stanfill Cemetery.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Mount Pleasant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edith L. Hampton, 83, Teetersville, died Sept. 29, 2004, at Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital.
She was a member of the Teetersville Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert L. Varney; her second husband, Gilbert Hampton; her parents, Charlie and Jesse Collins Lawson; three sisters: Flora Johnson, Marie Perez and Beatrice Marino; two brothers; Olin Lawson and Junior Lawson; and one son, Robert Varney.
Survivors include seven children: Rose Crymes and husband, Morris, Tyler, Texas; Gail McCarthy and husband Joe, Saginaw, Mich.; Pauline Arvin and husband, Doug, Elcomb; Danny Varney, Saginaw Mich.; Marsell Bradford, Elcomb; Gloria Moses, Teetersville; and Kenny Varney and wife, Cheryl, Tazewell Tenn.; 16 grandchildren: Kim Seigler, Timothy and Brian Crymes, Tammy Kerrens, Renee Kerreos, Mike Arvin, Joey Varney, Tara Ethier, Justin Ethier, Matthew Moses, Tracey Miniard Howard, Heather Varney, Jason Varney, Kelly Tolley, Shawn Varney and Stacey Short; and a special friend, Barbara Hensley
Visitation will be Friday from 6 until 9 p.m. at Rich Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Rich Funeral Home with the Rev. Josh Hensley and the Rev. Clinton Duke officiating.
Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Justin Ethier, Matthew Moses, Mike Arvin, Brandon Johnson, Brett Johnson and Nick Wright. Honorary pallbearers will include Brian Crymes and Shawn Varney.
Rich Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James Earl Harris Jr.
Putney
September 20, 2004
James Earl Harris Jr., 37, Putney, died Sept. 20, 2004, at his residence following a long illness.
A native of Harlan, he was a Kentucky Colonel and a retired sales manager of Hart's Dry Cleaning. He was also employed at Kerns, Purity, Coca Cola and Moore's. He was also the owner and operator of All American Heroes.
He is preceded in death by his father, James Earl Harris Sr.
He is survived by his wife, Dana Harris; his mother, Ella Cottrell, Wallins; four children: Brittany Harris, Taylor Harris, James Harris III and David Allen, all of Putney; two sisters: Angel Posey and fianc', Frank Poblette, Wallins; Glenda Sailor and husband, Steve, Elkhart Ind.; and several nieces and nephews: Tiffany Posey, Heather Posey, Amber Poblette, Katie Sailor, Scott Sailor, Stephanie Sailor, Sarah Simpson and Scottie Simpson; and several aunts and uncles.
Visitation is today after 4 p.m. at Little Laurel Bible Church.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Little Laurel Bible Church with the Rev. Titus Boggs officiating.
Burial will follow at Alex Branch Cemetery.
Tim Johnson, Leonard Baker, Mike Johnson, Will Curry, Kinny Barger, Scottie Simpson, Frank Poblette, Tadd Smith, Goat Simpson, Keith Marshall, J.D. Harris and friends and family members will serve as pallbearers.
Loyall Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Carolyn Helton, 61, Benham, died Sept. 16, 2004, at Britthaven of Tri-Cities following a long illness.
She was a native of Benham and served on the Benham City Council for a number of years. She was a member of Cumberland Pentecostal Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George A. and Bertha Sanders James, and her husband, Paul David Helton.
Survivors include five children: Robin Dixon and husband, Jeff; James 'Hogie' Goodwin and Justin Goodwin, all of Somerset; Roberta Smith and husband, Willis, Duncan, S.C.; and Melanie Helton of Orlando, Fla.; seven grandchildren: Ben Dixon and wife, Jaquetta; Jay Dixon, Hogan Goodwin, Hunter Goodwin, Jadie Goodwin, Jenalee Smith and Jamie Smith; one great-grandson, Logan Paul Dixon, Somerset; two brothers: David James, North Carolina; and Jerry James, Indianapolis, Ind.; six sisters: Dorothy Hoskins, Crossville, Tenn.; Jessie Buchanan, Sandusky, Ohio; Octavia Scopa, Lynch; Naomi Winstead, Cumberland; Monnie Rice, Westland, Mich.; and Patricia Maclaughlan, Glen Arbor, Mich.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday at the Tri-City Funeral Home with the Rev. Ernest Brock and the Rev. Wayne Caldwell officiating.
Interment was in Huff Cemetery.
Tri-City Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Herman Helton

Herman Helton, 83, Pathfork, died Oct. 2, 2004, in Lexington.
A native of Harlan County, he was a 50-year member of the masonic lodge F&A.M.; 666, a retired coal miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Sarah Payne Helton; a daughter, Herma H. Taylor; a brother, John Helton; and two grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, America Howard Helton, Pathfork; two daughters: Phyllis Floyd Deal, Lexington; and JoAnn Helton Freeman, Georgetown, Ohio; five brothers: James Helton, Clyde Helton and Charles Helton, all of Cincinnati; Ross Helton, Corbin; and George Helton, Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters: Anna Howard, Bedford, Ind.; and Imogene Hoskins, Bowling Green; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and a host of other family and friends.
Masonic rites will be conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home.
A private graveside service will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Middlesboro.
Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.
Mount Pleasant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ricky Wayne Hensley, 46, Wallins, died Sept. 7, 2004, at Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, Tenn., due to injuries suffered in a car accident.
An employee of Manalapan Mining Company in the engineering department, he was a member of the House of Mercy Church in Wallins.
Survivors include his parents, Gilbert and Betty Long Hensley, Wallins; his wife, Rebecca Noe Hensley, Wallins; two children: Amy Burkhart and husband, Russell, Wallins; Josh Hensley, Wallins; his grandmother, Edna Long, Wallins; two brother-in-laws, Johnny Noe and wife, Linda, Threepoint; and David Noe and wife, Robin, Kingsport, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation is today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. at the House of Mercy in Wallins, with the Rev. Darlene Roberts, the Rev. Carl Eldridge and the Rev. Odie Carroll officiating.
Burial will follow in the Park-Howard Cemetery in Wallins.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Mount Pleasant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
