DEATON

Darrell G. Deaton, 81, of Evarts, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at his home with his family by his side. Born January 16, 1932 at Ages, he was a retired welder for Eastover Mining Company. Darrell served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the UMWA; a board member at the Cloverfork Clinic; and believed in the Holiness faith.

Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, Sudie Crider Deaton and John Deaton, Sr.; and a brother, John “Junior” Deaton.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Thelma Eunice Kirkpatrick Deaton, Evarts; four children, Jeffrey Deaton and wife, Lisa, Kingsport; Rhonda White and husband, Jack, Evarts; Pamela Raleigh and husband, Rod, Benham; and Timothy Deaton, Barbourville; three sisters, Zelma Fultz, Wilma Goodwin, Wanda Duncan and husband, Hayward, all of Hampton, VA; one brother, Glenn Deaton and wife, Jewel, Dayton, OH; and a sister-in-law, Billie Faye Deaton, Ages.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Stephanie Wyatt, Jessica Clay, Patrick White, Justin White, Jacob Raleigh, Grayson Raleigh and Samuel Deaton; six great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.

Visitation will be held Saturday from 5 until 9 pm at the Evarts Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 am Sunday, July 21, 2013, in the Chapel of the Evarts Funeral Home with the Reverend Rod Raleigh officiating.

Burial will follow in the Brookside Cemetery with military rites by the Kentucky National Guard. Pallbearers will be Jacob Raleigh, Patrick White, Justin White, Jack White, Johnny Deaton and Donnie Sage. Samuel Deaton will be an honorary pallbearer.

JEFFERS

Alfred “Alfie” Jeffers, 47, of Smith, KY passed from this life on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at his home. Born October 12, 1965, he was a lifelong resident of Harlan County. Alfred was a disabled coal miner from injuries received in 1999. He had worked several years in the mines prior to that. He was also a certified auto body repairman and a member of the Kentucky National Guard. He attended the Lenarue Baptist Church where he was also a member.

Preceding him in death are his grandparents, Edward and Ivrey Barnwell; and Alfred and Mamie Jeffers.

Survivors include a daughter, Samantha Kelly, of Somerset; his parents, Marvin and Patsy Jeffers, of Loyall; two sisters, Mary Ann Sutton and husband Terry, of Smith; Tammy Simpson and husband Rick, of Dayhoit; two brothers, Marvin Jeffers, Jr. and wife Teresa, of Rio Vista; and Michael Jeffers and wife Jennifer, of Loyall; his nieces and nephews, Dillon Jeffers, Deric Jeffers, Caleb Engle, Evan Turner, Delora Goshen, Jennifer Turner, Felicia Sutton, Kaitlyn Engle, Emily Simpson, Amy Hensley and Madison Goshen; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be Friday from 5 – 7 pm at Harlan Funeral Home.

Funeral services will follow at 7 pm with the Reverend Joe Howard officiating.

Interment services will take place at 11 am Saturday at Resthaven Cemetery. Military Rites will be presented by the Harlan Honor Guard. The family will meet at 10:30 am Saturday at Harlan Funeral Home to escort Alfred to the cemetery.

Pallbearers are Rick Simpson, Tim Goshen, Greg Turner, Dillon Jeffers, Deric Jeffers, Harley Skidmore, Terry Sutton and Brent Scott.

Harlan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HOWARD

Georgia Rose Howard, age 81, of Louisville, KY, formerly of Harlan, KY passed away July 14, 2013 in Louisville, KY following a long illness. She was born April 25, 1936 in Harlan Co., KY to the late Martin “Mart” Cain and Laura Shepherd Cain. Georgia was a homemaker and a member of The Bible Church, Grays Knob, KY.

Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Charles Albert Howard; brothers: Byrd Cain, Carlo Cain, Ray Cain, Clarence Cain, Murphy Cain, and sister, Mae Cain Hall.

Survivors left to mourn her passing include her children: Martin Howard and wife, Marie, of Panama City, FL, Linda Duff and husband, Jim, of Louisville, KY, Mickey Madden and husband, George, of Louisville, KY, David Howard and wife, Bille Jean, of Lexington, TN, and Charles Howard, Jr., and wife, Rita, of Bardstown, KY; 15 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 18, 2013 from 12:00 to 1:00 PM at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home. Funeral will follow at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Mount Pleasant with the Rev. Larry Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Cemetery, Keith, KY with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

Mount Pleasant Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

GROSS

Anna Marie Moore Gross, 70, of Bowling Green, KY formerly of Pineville and Bledsoe passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013, at the Bowling Green Medical Center. Born August 20, 1942 in Wallins Creek, she retired from Harlan App. Reg. Hospital housekeeping department and believed in the Church of God faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Moore and Mossie Meadors Moore; one son, James Kelly Gross; six brothers, Francis, Frank, John, Cecil, Phillip and David Moore; and one sister, Maggie Saylor.

Anna is survived by her husband of 51 years, Lawrence Gross, Bowling Green; seven children, Larry Gross and wife Leta, Bowling Green; Floyd Simpson, Dallas Simpson, Bryce Simpson and wife Teri, Theodore Simpson, Tresa Bingham and husband Keith, all of Pineville; and Lisa Asher and husband Eugene, Speedwell, TN; three sisters: Rachel Bennett, of Clinton, Tenn.; Sarah Thurman, of Soddy Daisy, Tenn.; and Geneva Beaman, of Knoxville, Tenn.

Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and one on the way.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Green Hills Pentecostal Church, Bledsoe, KY.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2013, at the church with Reverend Walter Brock and Reverend Keith Coldiron officiating.

Burial will be in the Lewis Cemetery, Bledsoe, KY.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Loyall Funeral Home is in charge of her arrangements.

SIMPSON

Rebecca Day Simpson, 77 of Cranks went to be with the Lord on Friday July 12, 2013 due to a long illness at her home with her loving family by her side.

Rebecca was born January 6, 1936 in Cranks, KY to the late Johnny & Polly Day. She was born and raised in Cranks and married the love of her life Bobby Simpson for whom she had been married to for soon to be 58 years. She believed in the Holiness Faith. She was the founder and “director” of the Cranks Creek Survival Center for 36 years; along with her husband they started the Center after the 1977 flood. They have fed thousands of families and hosted thousands of College groups, school groups, and church groups to come in for 30 some years to help rebuild family’s homes. They have helped build many homes from the ground up or just to build a wheel chair ramp. After the 1977 flood Rebecca knew she had to do something to help the people of Harlan Co. She wrote book about her work and helped open the Trillium Center at the Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin. She will be truly missed.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by 2 sons, Ricky and Johnny Simpson; 2 sisters, Lydia Surgener and Louanne Napier; 2 brother Baby Bufford Day and Andrew Day.

Survivors include her loving husband of 57 years, Bobby Simpson; her children, Robert (Judy) Simpson of Cranks, Pat (Dale) Fields of Putney, Tony Simpson of Cranks, Rebecca (Harold) Harvey of Cranks; 2 brothers, her twin, Hiram Day of Cranks and Noah (Eula) Surgener of Cranks; she also leaves 15 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren to mourn her passing.

Visitation will be after 4:00 pm Sunday July 14, 2013 until the funeral hour at the Simpson Residence, located at 15177 South US Hwy 421 Cranks, KY.

Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Monday July 15, 2013 at the Simpson Residence with Rev. James Fee officiating.

Burial will follow at the Surgener’s Amazing Grace Cemetery, Cranks.

Pallbearers will be Robert Simpson, Tony Simpson, Harold Harvey, Eric Schwerer, Jimmy Garrett, and Brandon Simpson.

The family wishes to thank of the Hospice Nurses including Jimmy Garrett for their kind words and all they have done for the family. Special thanks to Amanda Simpson for the care that she showed Rebecca.

Jerry Wayne Collett, Sr., 60, passed away, Sunday July 14, 2013 in Coeburn, VA. Mr. Collett was born on April 6, 1953 in Harlan Co. KY to the late Mr. Robert Collett & Dora Turner Collett. He was preceded in death by his brothers Robert Lee Collett, Chester Collett, Michael Collett; father, Robert Collett & mother, Dora Turner Collett.

Survivors include: wife, Laverne Elizabeth Ward Collett, Coeburn, VA; daughter, Wendy Collett Wilbourn, Cairo, GA; son, Jerry Wayne Collett, Jr., Coeburn, VA; son, Charles Lee Alexander Collett, Sr., Coeburn, VA; daughter, Vanessa Collett Lukasiewicz, Simpsonville, SC; Grandchildren Kayla Elizabeth Lynn Wilbourn, Charles Lee Alexander Collett, Jr. & Evalynn Jane Lukasiewicz; brother Johnny Collett, New Tazewell, TN; sister Juanita Collett Hurst, New Tazewell, TN; brother Tim Collett, New Tazewell, TN; sister Linda Collett Shipley, New Tazewell, TN; brother, David Collett new Tazewell, TN; brother Robert Lee Miracle, Harrogate, TN and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the Anderson-Laws and Jones Funeral Home Tuesday, July 16 at 1:00 pm. Graveside service will tentatively be held following the visitation at the Evarts Memorial Gardens with the Rev. James Daniels officiating.

Pallbearers are Jerry Wayne Collett, Jr., Charles Lee Alexander Collett, Sr., Jason Wilbourn, Rob Lukasiewicz, Johnathan Collett & David Jacobs.

TAYLOR

Pansy Smith Taylor, 78, of Evarts, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2013, at the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital. Born September 8, 1934 in St. Charles, VA, Pansy had lived here all of her life. She was a homemaker and believed in the Holiness faith.

Pansy is preceded in death by her husband, Harrison Taylor; her parents, Henry Smith and Nora Burgan Smith; one brother, Arnold Smith; and two sisters, Lilly Rowe and Elizabeth Craft.

Survivors include seven children, Randy Taylor and wife, Angie, Harlan; Russell Taylor and wife, Angela, Evarts; Scotty Taylor and wife, Teresa, Closplint; Brenda Greene and Max Wilson, Georgia; Eddie Taylor and wife, Linda, Closplint; Tilda Thomas and Michael McKeehan, Sweetwater, TN; and Willard Taylor and wife, Karen, Clarksville, TN; and one sister, Shirley Nunley and husband, Ed, Highsplint.

Also surviving are 23 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

Visitation will be held Monday from 4 until 7 PM in the Chapel of the Evarts Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at 1 PM in the Chapel of the Evarts Funeral Home with Pastor Frank Howard and Pastor John Luttrell officiating.

Burial will follow in the Evarts Memorial Gardens with Pansy’s sons and grandsons serving as pallbearers.

Evarts Funeral Home is in charge of her arrangements.
