Louisa Dyer
1929-2007

Louisa Jane “Doll” Leigh Dyer, age 78, of Ridgeway Drive, Wellington, Kentucky, passed away Friday, September 7, 2007, at St. Joseph East in Lexington, Kentucky.

She was born August 13, 1929, at Liberty, in Casey County, Kentucky, and was the daughter of the late John and Betty Jane Pettyjohn Leigh. Her husband, Elwood Denton Dyer, preceded her in death on January 20, 1980.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Denton William and Michelle Ann Dyer of Wellington, Kentucky; one stepdaughter, Sharon Dyer of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky; one sister, Effie Murphy of Liberty, Kentucky; and three grandchildren, Matthew Denton Dyer, Abigail Renee Dyer, and Justin Cole Dyer.

Mrs. Dyer was a homemaker and enjoyed making quilts. She is a member of LaPorte Church of Christ, LaPorte, Colorado.

Funeral services were conducted 1 p.m. Monday, September 10, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Denton William Dyer officiating. Burial was in Clearfield Cemetery. Pallbearers were Matthew Dyer, Mark Hounshell, Andrew Burton, David Burton, Kendell Barnes, and Les Vairs.

Visitation was Monday, September 10, 2007, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.

Russell Fultz
1933 - 2007

MOREHEAD - Russell Fultz, 74, of Parkside Court passed away Sunday, September 9, 2007 in the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.

He was born on July 5, 1933 in Rowan County, Kentucky, a son of the late Sollie and Mary Alice Whitt Fultz.

Mr. Fultz was a barber and a former employee of Tennessee Gas Transmission Corporation. He was a United States Army Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict, a 40 year member of the Morehead Masonic Lodge No. 654 where he had served as Past Master, a member of the El Hasa Shrine Temple, Scottish Rite of Covington and York Rite. Mr. Fultz was of the Baptist Faith, a Kentucky Colonel and he enjoyed fishing, reading and he had read the Bible completely through 7 times.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Clifford Fultz, Charlie Fultz, Homer Fultz, Ervin Fultz, Lester Fultz, Ira Fultz and Raymond Fultz.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Caudill Fultz of Morehead, two daughters, Mary Cantrell and her husband, Jerry of Louisville and Debbie Stinnett and her husband, Marcel of Grayson, one sister, Betty Little of Morehead, two granddaughters, Richelle Meade and her husband, Matthew of Morehead and Amy Greenhill of Louisville, one grandson, Jeremy Cantrell of Lexington, two great-grandchildren, Justin Delph of Louisville and Summer Meade of Morehead and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 12, 2007 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Elder Leo Ison officiating. Burial followed in the Fultz Cemetery. Full military rites were conducted at the graveside by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Masonic services were conducted at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday by the Morehead Masonic Lodge No. 654.

Pallbearers will be Marcel Stinnett, Jerry Cantrell, Jeremy Cantrell, Matthew Meade, Hubert Caudill and Paul Little.

Susan Sharp
1939-2007

Susan Coyle Sharp, age 68, of Augusta, Kentucky, formerly of Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, September 8, 2007. She was born April 26, 1939, in Bath County, Kentucky, and was the daughter of the late Callis and Esther Hayes Coyle.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Tammy Sharp of New Albany, Indiana; one daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Lynn Thomas of Augusta, Kentucky; two brothers, Callis Coyle, Jr., and Pete Coyle, both of Morehead, Kentucky; and four grandchildren, Chaney Jacobson, Kent Thomas, Brad Thomas, and Kevin Thomas.

Mrs. Sharp was a homemaker and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Funeral services were conducted 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 11, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Kent Thomas, Brad Thomas, Nick Jacobson, Marshall Coyle, Andy Coyle, and Gary Senters.

Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals is caring for arrangements.

Daniel Stanfield
1925-2007

Daniel P. Stanfield, age 82, of Swift Street, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, September 6, 2007, at the Life Care Center in Morehead.

He was born August 20, 1925, in Fleming County, Kentucky, and was the son of the late Thomas Plaz and Minnie Sproles Stanfield. His wife, Rosetta Hamm Stanfield, preceded him in death on September 30, 2004.

He is survived by one brother, Melvin Stanfield of Lubbock, Texas; one niece, Sheila Randel; two great-nephews, Brandon and Brian Hickey; and loving friends and caregivers, Donna Payne, Jake Payne, and Melissa Stacy, all of Morehead, Kentucky.

Mr. Stanfield served in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II and the Korean War. He was awarded a Purple Heart.

Graveside services were conducted 2 p.m. Monday, September 10, 2007, at the Wallingford Cemetery. Full military rites were conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Visitation was from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday, September 10, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.

Lela Crawford

MICHIGAN – Lela Crawford of Westland, Mich., wife of the late William Crawford and mother of JoAnn Wall (Larry) and Larry (Sheri), died Jan. 16. She was the grandmother of Angela (Mark), Pamela (Mike), William and Brandon; and great-grandmother of Evan, Luke Eliza and Ryan. Visitation is Friday, Jan. 19 from 1-9 p.m. at the Harry J. Will Funeral Home, 34567 Michigan Ave., Wayne, Mich. Services are Saturday, Jan. 20 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Philip R. Lewis
1934-2007

MOREHEAD - Philip R. Lewis, age 72, of Jewell Lane, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Monday, January 15, 2007, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. Born November 17, 1934, in Carter County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Kenneth E. and Roxie Fults Lewis.

Philip is survived by his wife, Shirley Smedley Lewis; two daughters, Kimberly (Dwayne) Allen and Roxanne Lewis of Morehead, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Kenna Marie Allen, Dwayne Edward Allen, II, Kenneth Albert Alderson, Austin James Alderson; and one great grandson, Jace Brayden Winkleman.

Philip was a prominent businessman, land owner and developer, community leader, and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

A 1952 graduate of University Breckinridge Training School, Philip attended Morehead State University and the University of Kentucky. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954-1958 and upon his return to Morehead became assistant manager and salesman with Lewis Garage, an International and Packard dealership, founded by his father. Philip worked there for eight years and then began a diversified business journey that lasted for almost fifty years.

His first venture was building and managing Lewis Trailer Park, located near Morehead State University, which he later sold. He also became part owner of Kentucky Fried Chicken (later Log Cabin Restaurant) and Consolidated Ready-Mix and purchased a controlling interest in Union Grocery Company. In 1977, he established Big 4 Lumber Company, which he continued to own and manage; and in 1998, Lewis Place, a mini mall that he also owned and operated.

Through the years, Philip’s construction of various types of residential and commercial housing expanded and he was a respected developer and member of the Affordable Housing Commission. He was instrumental in the formation of Laurel Run Management Group, which built apartment complexes in Kentucky, West Virginia, and North Carolina; established P-L Land Company; developed Pretty Valley Subdivision, which reinvigorated the Clearfield area; built a mobile home park; developed commercial property along U.S. 60 West; and constructed Dwayne Manor apartments. Also with two partners, he established a commercial and residential land development company, Hallwood LLC. Through the years, he generously donated materials and volunteers to Habitat for Humanity, Frontier Housing and other charitable organizations.

Philip was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Citizens Bank, Morehead City Council, and Morehead Fire Department. He currently served as a member of the Lee Cemetery Board and was a Kentucky Colonel.

Philip’s varied interests included being a strong Republican, reading and listening to music. A devoted husband and father, Philip especially enjoyed being with his grandchildren and great grandson.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, January 19, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Dr. John Conley, Rev. Mark Caldwell, and Rev. Allan Hutchinson officiating. Kenneth Albert Alderson will provide special music.

Burial will follow in Lee Cemetery with full military rites conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126 . Pallbearers will be Mark Lewis, Steve Lewis, Kenny Vencil, Dwayne Edward Allen, II., J. L. Eldridge, Kevin Masters, Jeff Masters and Casey Masters.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Rowan County Christian Academy, 576 Sunset Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.

Visitation is after 4 p.m. Thursday, January 18, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.

Franklin D. Cox
1934-2007

MOREHEAD - Franklin D. Cox, 72, of Catron Road passed away Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at his residence.

He was born on May 6, 1934 in Rowan County, Kentucky to the late Willis and Missouri Nickell Cox.

Mr. Cox was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps and a Korean combat veteran of the First Marine Division. He retired from the Ford Motor Company, Sharonville, Ohio in 1994 after thirty-six years of service. Frank was a member of UAW Retired Workers 863, American Legion Post #0126 and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the Hillview Baptist Church in Hamilton, Ohio and he loved gardening and was always busy with a project and creating something new on the farm.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Clyde Cox, Leslie Cox, Arval Cox and Elijah Cox and five sisters, Goldie Workman,

Mabel Brown, Phyllis Robertson, Julia Skaggs and Myrtle Shoemaker.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia McClain Cox, whom he married on June 12, 1954, of Morehead, one son, Larry Cox and his wife, Shon of Middletown, Ohio, one daughter, Melissa Cox of Cincinnati, Ohio, one brother, Lonnie Cox of Morehead, two sisters, Sadie Cundiff of Morehead and Virginia Ferguson of New York City, New York, several nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Murphy.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 17, 2007 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Rev. H. G. Pratt officiating. Burial will follow in the McClain-Arnold Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted at the graveside by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Visitation is after 6:00 P.M. Friday.

Pallbearers will be Byron Burton, Wesley Cox, Derek McClain, Jeff Bigham, Scott Cox and Lonnie Arnold and honorary pallbearers will be Talmadge Catron, Homer Goodman, Kenny Baldridge, Owen Cox, Owen Bigham and Jim McClain.

Harold Glenmore Ellington
1923 – 2007

MOREHEAD - Harold Glenmore Ellington, age 84, formerly of Morehead, died Sunday, February 11, surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren at Hospice Home, Burlington, North Carolina.

Harold was born January 28, 1923, in Bath County, Kentucky, the first of four children born to William Taylor Ellington and Marie Williams Ellington.

He moved to Morehead with his family in his early teens, and lived in the area for almost seventy years before moving to Elon, North Carolina in 2004.

He graduated from Breckinridge Training School in 1942, and then earned a teaching degree from Morehead State College after serving as a radio-gunner assigned to the 13th Army Air Force during World War II.

He married Pauline McBrayer, daughter of J. Earl and Martha Ann Pettit McBrayer, on August 25, 1949. To Harold and Pauline were born two daughters.

He accepted Christ as his Savior as a young man and worshipped and served at the Morehead First Church of God for more than fifty years. He enjoyed frequent fellowship with the Men's Brotherhood, served many terms on the Board of Trustees, and sang "traveling" bass in the choir.

He taught in the Rowan County School System for 28 years, 21 of those years at his beloved Haldeman School, where he mentored and encouraged 21 classes of 7th Graders.

He and his father were founding members of The Kentucky Long Rifles gun club and he competed as a member of the Kentucky Corps of Longriflemen state muzzle loading team. One of his greatest pleasures was demonstrating and explaining muzzle loading guns to a new generation.

Another of his passions was classic sports cars. He enjoyed owning and showing his '59 Corvette convertible (on clear days only!)

He loved bicycling, playing horseshoes, and running, and he earned many medals in the Rowan County and Kentucky Senior Olympic Games.

Harold was devoted to his family, and leaves them with many memories of joke-telling, sledding, shooting, singing, oral reading, and game-playing.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Pauline, and their two daughters, Terry Ellington Nixon (Mrs. Douglas), of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Leigh Ann Ramey (Mrs. Rob) of Gibsonville, North Carolina. Also, eight grandchildren, Adam, Emily, Caroline and Ethan Nixon, at home; and Jordan Doss (Mrs. Christopher), Airman First Class Travis and Laina Ramey, Molly and Hannah Ramey, at home.

Other survivors include a sister, Alma Ellington Bellamy (Mrs. Harold), and a brother, James Lowell Ellington, both of Morehead. He also leaves many nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Gordon Ellington.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:30 A.M. Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at the Morehead First Church of God with Pastor Allan Hutchinson, Pastor Gary Ausbun and Dr. Jack Ellis officiating. Burial followed in the Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with a tribute by the Long Rifles.

Pallbearers were Ben Tackett, Paul Richardson, Junior Kautz, David Wells, Art Litton and Gary Lewis.

In honor of the many hundreds of books Harold has enjoyed from the Rowan County Public Library, in lieu of flowers, if you wish to honor him with a gift, please make a contribution to the Rowan County Public Library in his memory.

Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home cared for all arrangements.
