Margaret Royse
1925-2008

FLEMINGSBURG - Margaret Adele Creamer Royse, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, went to be with Jesus May 18, 2008 at Pioneer Trace Nursing Home in Flemingsburg. Born March 31, 1925 to Gail L. and Mary B. Creamer of Muses Mills, Kentucky, Adele was a long-time member of the Bluebank Christian Church. Preceding her in death were her husband of 64 years, Arnold Royse, Jr., her parents, and brother, George Frank Creamer.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mrs. William Estill Royse, Sr., her children, Sharon Laraine (Edward) Ratcliff of Cynthiana and Ramona Celeste (Linton) Parker of Flemingsburg. Grandchildren include Paul (Michelle) Foster, Wesley (Jacqueline) Foster, Angela (Ron) Middleton, Bradley Adkins, Elizabeth Parker, Jana Lindsey and Tina (Robert) Hall. Great-grandchildren are Kacey (Jeremy) Hamm, Dustin French, Kyle Foster, Serena Faster, Lucas Foster, Aeryn Middleton, Michael Phetteplace, Samantha Hall, and Jamie Hedgecoth. She leaves one great-great-grandchild, Emma Grace Hamm. Nephews and nieces are Charles W. Wagoner (deceased), William Estill (Marlene) Royse, Jr., Stephanie and Tim; Tracy Allen (Cindy) Royse, Katie Royse, and Chris and Emily, Brady, Mikalyn and Abigail Voll; Julienne (John) Alderman, Sara and Evan.

Gail and Mary Creamer raised Adele and Frank during the depression. Life was hard, rural roads were nearly impassable at times and “Miss Mary” doctored horseback as a nurse-midwife. The background of Adele’s life must include the traumatic illness she suffered as a child. Here is the account of January 1930 as Adele remembered it:

“Mother’s greatest nursing challenge came on a cold winter night when I was five years old and running a high temperature. In spite of all the usual methods Mother couldn’t control my fever. This was something she had never seen and by morning I was completely paralyzed. After three long days, my temperature was near to normal. Mother administered water and broth and set about moving my arms and legs and turning me from side to side trying to restore feeling. Dad rode horseback through snow, belly deep to the horse, nine miles to the nearest phone to call the doctor. But road conditions were impossible and the doctor wouldn’t come.

"On the fifth day, hearing Dad’s voice, I opened my eyes and recognized him. My strength returned slowly and by March I could use all of my body except for my right leg. Hot wraps along with vigorous massages and exercise failed to bring improvement and it was decided to take me to Children’s Hospital in Lexington. When the doctors questioned Mother as to the details of my symptoms and treatment administered, it was unquestionably infantile paralysis or polio as it is better known. Through my parents’ prayers and Mother’s tireless efforts, I had survived the deadly disease.”

Survival of polio at age five helped develop the strength, determination and courage that would carry Adele through life. She married her childhood sweetheart, Arnold, a month before graduating as Valedictorian of Fleming County High School’s 1943 senior class. Crutches and a leg brace did not stop her from having a family, keeping house, learning to drive and pursuing her hobbies and church activities. Adele devoted herself full time to her husband, daughters and homemaking. As an accomplished seamstress, she sewed nearly all the clothing for herself and the girls. Obtaining her driver’s license in the early 60’s was extraordinary for a physically challenged person and accomplished with Arnold’s mechanical ingenuity. She always believed in helping others and as a sewing leader shared her skills with the 4-H program.

Since her childhood Adele had enjoyed sketching and design. That interest led her to join Deanna Standiford’s art classes for adults in the 70’s where she learned to paint with acrylics and relished being a student once more. She also loved crossword puzzles, canasta and playing the piano. She served the Bluebank Christian Church as she was able, as Sunday School teacher and pianist.

Adele’s legacy to all those she has touched is something she repeated often to her daughters growing up, “Always trust in God, be kind to others–especially those in need, and never ever stop loving each other, no matter what.”

A celebration of Adele’s life will be Friday, May 23 at 1 p.m. at the Boone-Nickell Funeral Home. Interment will be in Fleming County Cemetery where balloons will be released in her honor. Honorary pallbearers are Adele’s loving caregivers, Elizabeth Borders, Linda Bussell, Tracey Heflin, Sharon Hunt, Valerie Sewell, Bernice Staggs, Candance Sweet, Lisa Vise, and Polly Williams.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Bluebank Christian Church in care of Boone-Nickell Funeral Home, 150 West Water Street, Flemingsbrug, KY, 41041.
