Rushing
Graveside services for Joanna Rushing, 70, of Marion, were held Aug. 7, 2001 at Chapel Hill Cemetery. Sister Lucy Tedrick and Rev. Tommy Shelton officiated. Gilbert Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Rushing, a member of Marion Church of God, passed away Aug. 4 at Crittenden Hospital.

Surviving are a daughter, Melissa Thomas of Marion and a sister, Linda Jones of Barbertown, Ohio.

Hobbs
Henry J. "Doc" Hobbs, 68, of Tolu, passed away Aug. 3, 2001 at his home. He was a U.S. Army Veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Nellie Hobbs of Tolu; a son, Rodney Hobbs of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; a daughter, Carla D. Tinsley of Crayne; three stepsons, Phillip McFerrin of Evergreen, Ala., Bobby Joe Hollman of Navarre, Fla., and James Hollman of Brickwood, Ala.; three stepdaughters, Patricia Diane Leatherwood of Bessmer, Ala., Gloria Jean Waters of Evergreen and Michelle Brown of Madisonville; three sisters, Stella Mae Kinsey of Hobart, Ind., Lavina Morrison of Elko, Nev., and Ruby Tinsley of Tolu; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Fern S. Hobbs.

Graveside services were held Aug. 6 at Hurricane Cemetery. Gilbert Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Van Laan
Ava Rae Van Laan of Bay City, Mich., formerly of Marion, passed away Aug. 1, 2001 at Bay Medical Center in Bay City. She was 82.

Van Laan was born in Crittenden County and graduated from Shady Grove High School. She attended Sugar Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church as a youth. She most recently was a member of First Baptist Church in Essexville, Mich., where she served in many areas of ministry.

She taught school in Marion for two years before moving to Bay City and worked in a munitions plant in World War II.

Surviving are two daughters, Carol Bright of Wausaw, Wisc., and Beverly Jo Bristow of Bay City; a son, Charles Van Laan of West Memphis, Ark.; six grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter C. Van Laan. Her parents were William and Ada Belle Lamb.

Thurmond
Edna Earl Thurmond, 72, of Marion, passed away Aug. 5, 2001 at Livingston Hospital.

Survivors include four daughters, Sharon Murray and Donna Joyce of Marion, Kathy Allen of Princeton and Pam Perryman of Lola; a son, Randy Travis of Marion; her mother, Mary Babb of Marion; two sisters, Betty Dunbar and Sue Belt, both of Marion; a brother, Ronnie Babb of Henderson; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Aug. 8 at Crowell Cemetery with Rev. Robert Phillips officiating. Gilbert Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Miniard
Aretta Miniard, 82, of Fredonia, passed away Aug. 7, 2001 at Livingston Hospital. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

She is survived by eight sons, Ed Miniard, Jay Miniard and Elmo Miniard, all of Dycusburg, Tony Miniard of Frances, Douglas Miniard of Paducah, Dallas Miniard of Marion, Donald Miniard of Harlan and Ralph Miniard of Cleveland, Ohio; a daughter, Juanita Noland of the Mexico community; three brothers, Clay Richardson of Crayne, Junior Richardson of Picayune, Miss., and Conley Richardson of Marion; two sisters, Mary Fox of Crayne and Gean Moore of Picavune; 27 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Hurst Miniard; and her husband, Bill Miniard.

Graveside services will be held Aug. 9 at Caldwell Springs Cemetery with Bro. Darrell Harrison officiating. Gilbert Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Brown
Margaret Brown, 68, of Salem, passed away July 30, 2001 at Salem Springlake Care Center. She was a member of Tyners Chapel Church Independent.

Surviving are two sisters, Marian Koon of Salem and Helen Watson of Evansville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Brown. Her parents were Harry Harpending and Lassie Hicks Harpending.

Funeral services were held Aug. 1 at Boyd Funeral Home in Salem with Rev. Walzie Hosick and Rev. Robert Phillips officiating. Burial was in Salem Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 2615, Paducah, KY 42002.

Knowlton
Funeral services for Vada Nell Knowlton, 76, of Marion, were held Aug. 1, 2001 at Gilbert Funeral Home. Burial was in Salem Cemetery.

Knowlton passed away July 27 at Livingston Hospital.

She is survived by a son, Donald Knowlton of Marion; three sisters, Geneva Longeway of Deltona, Fla., and Mary L. Zentz and Betty Green, both of Westland, Mich.; two brothers, Joe Frank Green of Onaway, Mich., and Bobby Green of South Lions, Mich.; 18 nieces and nephews; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Rundles
Aubrey Leigh Rundles, infant daughter of J.R. and Melissa Crump Rundles of Grand Rivers, passed away July 24, 2001 at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a half sister, Kelsey Lee Baker-Rundles of Benton; maternal grandparents, Wanda and Charles Crump of Benton; paternal grandparents, Mike and Teresa Sauvage of Smithland and Thomas and Lou Rundles of Benton; great-grandparents Fred and Loraine Manship of Auburn, Ill., Alma Crump and the late Ivan Crump of Virden, Ill., and Joan Hughes of Fredonia; great-great grandjparents, Mary Koltveit and the late Rudy Koltveit of Pontiac, Ill.; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Graveside services were held at Landrum Cemetery in Grand Rivers July 26 with Rev. Larry Lewis officiating. Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah was in charge of arrangements.

Carter
Mable Marie Carter, 90, of San Jose, Calif., formerly of Salem, passed away June 22, 2001 in San Jose.

She is survived by two sons, Russell C. Partain and James G. Lagodzinski, both of California; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Roy Partain, Frank Lagodzinski and Trice Carter; and two sisters, Helen Mott and Freda Stephenson. Her parents were John and Lydia Osman.

Graveside services were held July 21 at Salem Cemetery with Rev. Maxie Hensen officiating.

Lucas
Funeral services for Robert Evan "Bob" Lucas, 74, of Chandler, were held July 23, 2001 at Koehler Funeral Home in Chandler, Ind., with Ronald A. Willis officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Chandler.

Lucas passed away July 19 at the St. Mary's Medical Center.

He was a member of the Chandler United Methodist Church where he served on the Pastor-Parish committee. He retired in 1984 after 37 years of service at Whirlpool. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving in World War II. He was a member of Strangers Rest Masonic Lodge No. 240, Evansville Scottish Rite and Hadi Shrine, and served on Warrick City Council. He was a Chandler Town Board member.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marjorie Lucas of Chandler; a daughter, Cindy Steale of Evansville; two sons, Ronald Evan Lucas and Brian K. Lucas, both of Chandler; a foster son, James Peterson; a brother, Paul Glyn Lucas of Tulahoma, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to Chandler United Methodist Church.

Hosick
Loisteen Davenport Hosick, 83, of Marion, passed away July 19, 2001 at Crittenden County Convalescent Center. Funeral services were held July 21 at Boyd Funeral Home with Rev. Donnie Howton officiating. Burial was in Frances Cemetery.

Hosick is survived by a daughter, Sonia Guess; a grandson, Terry Keith Guess; and three great-grandchildren, all of Marion.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ogle Davenport, and her second husband, Herman Hosick.
