Clara Allen
Clara Allen, age 76, of Betsy Layne, Ky., wife of Bert Allen, passed away Monday, July 15, 2002, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, Ky.
She was born July 19, 1925, in Betsy Layne, Ky., the daughter of the late James A. Phillips and Nellie Ritchie Phillips. She was a former nurse for Pikeville Methodist Hospital, Pikeville, Ky., and a member of the United Methodist Church, Betsy Layne, Ky.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Herbert Allen of Austin, Tx., and Randy Allen of Harrodsburg, Ky.; one daughter, Pacilla Conn of Banner, Ky.; six grandchildren, Sarah Conn, Kevin Allen, Jessica Allen, Jamie Allen, Kyle Allen, and Brian Allen.
Funeral services for Clara Allen will be conducted Thursday, July 18, 2002, at 11:00 a.m., at the United Methodist Church, Betsy Layne, Ky., with the clergyman, Randy Blackburn, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation is at the funeral home.

Aileen Hughes Howard
Aileen Hughes Howard, age 73, of Garrett, Ky., passed away Thursday, July 11, 2002, at the Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington, Ky.
She was born December 7, 1928, in Pike County, Ky., the daughter of the late Clarence Hughes and Nona Cavins Hughes. She was a homemaker and a member of the Garrett Baptist Church, Garrett, Ky., since 1966.
Survivors include four sons, Mike Howard of Hueysville, Ky., Kenneth Lee Howard and Steven “Cecil” Howard, both of Garrett, Ky., and Terry Ray Howard of David, Ky.; three daughters, Peggy Turner of Garrett, Ky., Donna Bradley of Allen, Ky., and Tina Salyer of Staffordsville, Ky.; four brothers, Donald Hughes, Clarence Hughes, Bill Hughes, and Jimmy Hughes, all of Garrett, Ky.; two sisters, Peggy Daniels and Joyce Allen, both of Garrett, Ky.; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Bobby Hughes, and one sister, Betty Hughes.
Funeral services for Aileen Hughes Howard were conducted Sunday, July 14, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Garrett First Baptist Church, Garrett, Ky., with the clergyman, Randy Osborne, officiating.
Burial was in the Tom Martin Cemetery, Garrett, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Pallbearers: Steve Turner, Vincent Turner, Jamie Mullins, Matt Howard, Kevin Hughes, William Hughes, Stevie Hughes, and Randall Hughes.
Honorary: Don Hughes, Jimmy Hughes, Bill Hughes, Goble Allen, Clarence Hughes, Floyd Daniels, Chris Bradley, Denzil Turner, and Ray Salyer.

Johnny Henderson
Johnny Henderson, 60, of 5915 County Road 22, Lakeville, Ohio, died unexpectedly, Saturday evening, July 6, 2002, at his home.
He was born August 23, 1941, in Floyd County, Ky., the son of the late Ben and Dona (Akers) Henderson. He had been a Lakeville area resident for the past 37 years. He was a self-employed well driller and contractor. Johnny was a member and Deacon of Eternal Rose Old Regular Baptist Church, Nash-ville, Ohio.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Gayheart) Henderson, whom he married December 31, 1960, in Martin, Ky.; sons and daughters-in-law, Marty and Sandra Henderson of Gahanna, Raymond Henderson of Lake-ville, Craig and Julie Henderson and Neal and Valerie Henderson, all of Loudonville, Jason and Carla Henderson and Reggie and Angie Gayheart Jr., all of Hendersonville, Tn.; his daughter and son-in-law, Mona and Robert Weiss of Hender-sonville, Tn.; one brother, Frank Henderson of Shreve; and five sisters, Irma Lance of Loudonville, Ada Paige of Ashland, Susie Austin of Wooster, Ruby Gayheart of Gunstock, Ky., and Clady Blachley of Shreve; 21 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a son, Tracy Henderson in 1965, and two brothers, Brady and Charles “Edgel” Henderson.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 9, at 2:00 p.m., at Eternal Rose Old Regular Baptist Church, Nashville, Ohio, with Elders Hargis Tuttle and Raymond Gayheart officiating.
Burial was in Nashville Cemetery.
The Byerly-Lindsey Funeral Home, Loudonville, was in charge of arrangements.

Nell Boyd Samons
Nell Boyd Samons, age 77, of Dana, Ky., widow of Ivory Samons, passed away, Sunday, July 14, 2002, at her residence.
She was born May 11, 1925, in Dana, Ky., the daughter of the late James Monroe Boyd and Maggie Click Boyd. She was a former employee for the Shoe Factory, and a member of the Little Salem Old Regular Baptist Church since June of 1968.
Survivors include two sons, Myrl Travis Samons of Gallipolis, Oh., and James Monroe Samons of Endicott, Ky.; three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Minnie Akers.
Funeral services for Nell Boyd Samons will be conducted Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Little Salem Regular Baptist Church, Dana, Ky., with the Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will follow in the Simon Akers Cemetery, Dana, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation is at the funeral home.

Tony Ray Walters
Tony Ray Walters, 43, of Prestonsburg, Ky., died Friday, July 12, 2002, in Ewing, Ky., (Fleming Co.), following a sudden illness.
Born December 4, 1958, in Prestonsburg, Ky., he was the son of Fannie Sizemore Walters and the late Ray Walters. He was a former supplyman for Turner Elkhorn Mining.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Theda Gayheart Walters.
Survivors include one son, Mark Anthony Walters of Wheelwright, Ky.; one daughter, Tonya Walters Hall of Prestonsburg, Ky.; and one grandson, Trenton Hall.
He was preceded in death by one son, Gregory Todd Walters.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, July 15, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Ted Shannon, Hurley Short, and James Sizemore officiating.
Burial was in the Drift Cemetery at Drift, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.

John Allen
John Allen of Prestonsburg, former commonwealth attorney (Floyd and Knott counties), 31st Judicial District, 1939-1946), as well as prominent businessman in oil, gas, coal, real estate, auto dealership, theatre and other ventures, including being one of the original founders of the First Guaranty Bank of Martin, Ky., and the Superior Publishing Company, now the Floyd County Times, also constructing the following buildings: Fountain Korner, United Fuel/Strand Theatre and “Old” Floyd County Times as well as purchasing the towns of David and Wheelwright in Floyd County and other build-ings/homes in Prestonsburg and Sugarloaf. He was a practicing attorney since 1933 until 1999. John passed away at his home at 637 N. Arnold Avenue on Saturday, July 13. He was 94 years old.
John Allen was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Alice June Reynolds Allen.
He is survived by their six children; four sons, John Allen Jr., Robert R. Allen (Sarah B. “Sally” Burchett) and David D. Allen (Barbara Dotson) of Prestonsburg, and Stephen Reynolds Allen (Terri Hyden) of Peyton, Colorado; two daughters, Judith Ann Allen Colvin McCreary (Robert) of Lexington, and Mary Alice Allen Leslie (David Richard “Dickie”) of Prestonsburg.
He was affectionately called “granddaddy Allen” by 16 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
John was one of ten children born to the late John and Minta Salisbury Allen of Bosco, now known as Hueysville, on August 7, 1907. He attended public schools in Floyd County, then attended the St. Thomas College Academy, St. Paul, Mn., and the John C. C. Mayo College at Paintsville, Ky. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School. He was a lawyer and businessman from 1933, until he finally retired at the age of 91.
He married Alice June Reynolds, daughter of W.J. (William James “Squire”) and Rebecca Mayo Reynolds from Bucks Branch, Martin, Ky. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on July 25, 2001, prior to Alice’s passing on October 3, 2001. They raised their six children on the farm at Sugarloaf, Ky., and later at the homeplace (637 N. Arnold Avenue), Prestonsburg. John and Alice were members of the First United Methodist Church in Prestonsburg. He was a member of the Floyd County, Kentucky, and American Bar Associations.
John Allen was an astute businessman and a wonderful, loving, generous father, husband and “Granddaddy Allen.” He will be missed every day the rest of the children’s lives.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, John and Minta Salisbury Allen; four brothers, David Murph, Clifford, James Richard, and Robert; five sisters, Byrd Cooley, Elizabeth Collins Cadenhead, Jemima Schmate, Mary (“Sis”) Salisbury, and Rosilee (“Sug”) Hubbard Sutherland, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services for John Allen were conducted 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, at First United Methodist Church with Reverends Dr. Harold W. Dorsey, Dr. Floyd Price, and Mark Walz officiating.
Vistation was 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, July 15, at the funeral home, and Tuesday, 12 noon to 1 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church, Prestons-burg, Ky.
Burial was at the John Allen Cemetery, Sugarloaf, under the direction of Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Pallbearers: David D. Allen II, James D. Allen, John Josiah Allen, John Wesley Jacobson, Joseph Levi Allen, Robert R. Allen II, Stephen R. Allen II, Michael Douglas, Michael Harris, John Wayne White and Roger Brian White.
Contributions are suggested in lieu of flowers to Hospice of Big Sandy, P.O. Box 277, Hager Hill, Ky. 41222, or First United Methodist Church, 256 S. Arnold Avenue, Prestonsburg, Ky. 41653.

Lorraine Hatcher
Services for Lorraine J. Hatcher, 78, of Frankfort, widow of former Kentucky Secretary of State George Glenn Hatcher, were held in the First United Methodist Church, Frankfort, at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 13, 2002.
Mrs. Hatcher, who died Wednesday in the Kindred Hospital in Louisville, following an extended illness, was buried in the Frankfort Cemetery.
Born in Prestonsburg on July 21, 1923, the daughter of the late Joe and Fanny Stephens Jarrell, she was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University. A retired teacher with the Frankfort Independent Schools, she was also retired from the Kentucky Workforce Development Cab-inet. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society.
Survivors include three daughters, Elissa Odham of Louisville, Elizabeth Springate of Harrodsburg, and Glenna J. Hatcher of Frankfort; and a brother, Joe W. Jarrell of Louisa.
Dr. David Hilton officiated at the services.
Arrangements were under direction of Rogers Funeral Home, Frankfort.
Bearers were Joey Bailey, Todd Bailey, Jeff Jones, Chester Pulliam, Frank Sharfe, and Frank Stauffer.
Honorary bearers were Darrell Bailey, Jim Daniels, Andrew Freese and Webster Griffin.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Billie Williamson
Billie Williamson, age 77, of Prestonsburg, Ky., husband of Pearl Hamilton Williamson, passed away Thursday, July 4, 2002, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, Ky.
He was born June 29, 1925, in Drift, Ky., the son of Walter Williamson and Jessie Dean Williamson. He was a retired First Sergeant in the U.S. Army, and served in the Army during World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Farley Williamson of Prestonsburg, Ky., Walter Edward Williamson of Clarksburg, West Virginia, and Billie Williamson of Tacoma, Wa.; two brothers, Frank Williamson of Oxnard, Ca., and Walter Williamson Jr., of Drift, Ky.; and one grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, July 7, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with Clergyman Ted Shannon officiating.
Burial was in the Gethsemane Gardens, Prestonsburg, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home, with church services being conducted on Saturday, at 7 p.m.
Pallbearers: Dewayne Wil-liamson, James Clark, Ronnie Williamson, Edward William-son, Tommy Robinson, and Mack Williamson.
