Richard “Dick” Lewis Jr.
Richard “Dick” Lewis Jr., 59 years of age, of Prestonsburg, Ky., was born on June 23, 1942, in Floyd County, Ky. He was the son of the late Lee and Maudie Jervis Lewis.
He passed away Saturday, June 8, 2002, after an extended illness at the Wolfe County Health Care Center. He was a disabled welder and truck driver for East Kentucky Explosives. He was a Freewill Baptist.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Jervis Lewis; one daughter, Amanda Lewis of Prestonsburg, Ky.; two brothers, Charles Lewis of Prestonsburg, Ky., Troy Jarrell of Flat Gap, Ky.; three sisters, Narcie Jarrell and Mary Alice Goble, both of Prestonsburg, Ky., and Charlotte Powers of Auxier, Ky.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Woodrow Lewis, Ollie Lewis and Glenn Lewis; and one sister, Edna Faye Burchett.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home in Martin, Ky., with Jack Howard officiating.
Burial was in the Burchett Cemetery, at Cow Creek.
Visitation was at the funeral home.

Audrey Childers Moore
Audrey Childers Moore, age 78, of Drift, Ky., widow of Orville Moore, passed away Friday, June 7, 2002, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, Ky.
She was born June 17, 1923, at Topmost, Ky., in Knott Co., the daughter of the late Cannie and Mae Vance Hall. She was a homemaker, and a member of the First Baptist Church, Garrett, Ky.
Survivors include three daughters, Ruth Hale of Somerset, Ky., Bertha Turner of Drift, Ky., and Tammy C. Hall of Pikeville, Ky.; two brothers, Johnnie Hall of Pinetop, Ky., and Ford Hall of Bellville, Mi.; four sisters, Cordie Bates of Pinetop, Ky., Della Bates of Kite, Ky., Velva Johnson of Halo, Ky., and Laudie Slone of Huntington, In.; three half-sisters, Ida Hicks, Mae Moore and Susie Reterford, all of Garrett, Ky.; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Dave Childers, and one step-great-grandchild, Aaron Justin Johnsen.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 10, 2002, at 11 a.m., in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with Clergyman Larry Adams officiating.
Burial was in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, Ky., under the professional care of Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Pallbearers: Johnny Turner, Mike Turner, Adam Hall, Brian Gibson, Gary Rose, Tommy Hall and Roger Clevinger.

Estill Cole
Estill Cole, 69 years of age, of Melvin, Ky., was born on October 2, 1932, in Melvin, Ky., the son of the late Elbert and Sarah Caudill Cole. He passed away, Monday, June 10, 2002, of an extended illness at the residence of his daughter at Hi Hat. He was a retired carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Fayetta Johnson Cole.
Other survivors include five daughters, Greta Tackett of Hi Hat, Melody Cable of Melvin, Crystal Dowd and Jackquelin Caudill, both of Elkhart, Ind.; four sons, Rocky Cole and Warren Cole, both of Melvin, Ricky Cole of Shelbiana, Ky., and Ricky Rowe of Hi Hat; two brothers, Russell Cole of South Portsmouth, Ky., and William McKinley Cole of Garrison, Ky.; four sisters, Ada Thornsbury of Auxier, Ky., Naomi Braden of Monroe, Mich., Justeen Bentley, and Vada Tackett, both of Garrison, Ky.; one special niece, Sandra Kaye Johnson; one special nephew, Jaisen Douglas Collins; 20 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by one son, Kenny Joe Cole; two daughters, Janie Ruth Helton and Sherry Cole; three brothers, Leonard Cole, Andy Cole, and Londy Cole; three sisters, Arizona Tackett, Delphia Vires and Lonie Cole.
There is a host of family and friends who will mourn his passing.
Funeral services will be Thursday, June 13, 2002, at 1:00 p.m., at the Little Nancy Old Regular Baptist Church, Hi Hat, Ky., with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will be in the Painter Harve Cemetery in Melvin, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held, beginning Tuesday, June 11, 6 p.m., at the Little Nancy Old Regular Baptist Church, at Hi Hat.

Walk L. Tackett
Walk L. Tackett, 64, of Minnie, died Saturday, November 15, 2003, at his residence.
Born July 10, 1939, in McDowell, he was the son of the late Marion and Minnie Vance Tackett. He was a retired conductor for CSX, and a United States Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Lee Weigle Tackett.
Other survivors include two sons, Craig Tackett of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Calvin Tackett of McDowell; two daughters, Chrissy Queen of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Minnie Tackett of Minnie; two brothers, Roy Tackett of Morehead, and Wade Tackett of Printer; six sisters, Irene Tackett of Printer, Helen Hall of McDowell, Columbia Mullins of McDowell, Gail Gayheart of Hillsborough, Verlie Mae Tackett of Printer, and Mary Patton of Glendale, Arizona; and seven grandchildren, Whitney, Jamie, Jesse, Cody, Alyssa, Gabriel and Brittany.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Roe Tackett, Junior Tackett, Alan Tackett, Billy Tackett and Timmy Tackett.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, November 18, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Nathan Lafferty officiating.
Entombment will be in the Gethsemane Gardens, Prestonsburg, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.

Loretta Gilliam
Loretta Gilliam, 62, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, died Tuesday, November 4, at the Kamanos Center Institute in Detroit, after a long and difficult battle with cancer.
She was the wife of the late Woodrow Gilliam, who died in 1991.
She was born in Wheelwright, the daughter of Clarence and Montina Henley.
She lived in Hendersonville, North Carolina, for 35 years, were she was employed by Carolina Village, before moving to Michigan to be with her family, after her retirement this year.
Surviving are two sons, David Gilliam of Atlanta, Georgia, and Daniel Gilliam of Asheville, North Carolina; three brothers, Warnie Spurgeon of Hager Hill, Elmer Henley of Applegate, Michigan and Ed Henley of Hanover, Indiana; five sisters, Opal Young of Marion, Ohio, Gennette Thacker of Youngstown, Ohio, Joyce McCain of Caledonia, Ohio, Sue Thomas of River Rouge, Michigan, and Ann Miller of Wyandotte, Michigan.
Visitation was held Thursday, November 6, at the Thomas Shepherd and Sons Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at Oak Grove Baptist Church.
The funeral was held at 11 a.m., Friday, November 7, at the Oak Grove Baptist Church, with Reverend Keith Sizemore officiating.
Burial followed in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park, Asheville, North Carolina, 28801.

Alvin R. Newsome
Alvin R. Newsome, 35, of Teaberry, died Monday, November 17, 2003, following a car accident on Route 979 at Grethel.
Born June 4, 1968, in McDowell, he was the son of Bobby Ray and Gerlene (Geraldine) Hamilton Newsome of Teaberry. He was a disabled welder and truck driver.
Other survivors include two sons, Austin Ray Newsome and Dylan Kyle Newsome of Grethel; one daughter, Tara Nashae Newsome of Grethel; maternal grandmother, Edna Newsome Hamilton of Teaberry; three brothers, Bobby Joe Newsome of Pikeville, Mickey Hamilton of Cumberland and Ishmael Glenn Hamilton of Craynor; three sisters, Tina Dawn Hall of Galveston, Renee Kendrick of Teaberry and Janet (Toot) Hall of Tiffin, Ohio and a host of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Willie Hamilon and paternal grandparents, Alvin and Nannie Newsome.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, November 21, at 11 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, in Martin, with Donnie Hall, Billy Compton, Burnin White and others officiating.
Burial will be in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, in Ivel, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation will start Wednesday, November 19, at 6 p.m., at the funeral home.

Richard D. Ball III
Richard D. Ball III, 55, of Ypsilanti, Michigan, died Wednesday, November 12, 2003, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.
Born July 23, 1948, in Prestonsburg, he was the son of Richard D. Ball Jr., and Lorraine Messer Ball. He was a retired captain for Continental Airlines, in Houston, Texas, where he worked for 17 years, and was a U.S. Army veteran.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Michael Ball (Sharon) of Ypsilanti, Michigan; two nieces, Melissa Ball and Cynthia Ball, both of Ypsilanti, Michigan, and one uncle, Print Ball of Prestonsburg.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, November 17, at 11 a.m., at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Mark Walz officiating.
Interment was at Mayo Cemetery, Prestonsburg.
Visitation was Sunday, 5 p.m., until 9 p.m.
Carter Funeral Home is serving the Ball family.
Pallbearers: Gary Wright, Robert Burchett, Charles Collins, Paul Messer, William David Messer, and Junior Porter.

John Woodford Howard II
John Woodford Howard II, son of Jane Davis Howard and the late Judge Harris S. Howard, was born November 9, 1955, in Prestonsburg. He departed this life, November 16, 2003.
John is survived by his mother; a brother, Harris (and his wife, Lee); a sister, Vanessa, and a very special nephew, Jonathan. His paternal grandparents, Jack and Florence Stephens Howard, and his maternal grandparents, Ralph and Myrtie Hill Davis, preceded him in death.
John graduated from Transylvania University, Summa Cum Laude, in 1977, and was in his first year of medical school when he had an automobile accident that left him a quadriplegic. After many months of therapy, and with strong determination, he decided that even though he would not be able to use his hands to become a surgeon, he could use his keen mind to become an attorney. Upon completion of law school, John worked as Staff Attorney for the Kentucky Court of Appeals, before going into private practice.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church, a member of the Floyd County, Kentucky, and American Bar Associations. He also served eight years on the Board of Directors of Mountain Comprehensive Care Center. John believed that achievement comes when you decide to live your possibilities and that it isn’t life that matters, it’s the courage you bring to it. He overcame monumental obstacles with courage, faith and integrity.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Thursday, at the First United Methodist Church.
Memorial contributions suggested to the Harris S. Howard Memorial Scholarship Fund at Prestonsburg Community College, 1 Bert Combs Drive, Prestonsburg, Kentucky, or to the First United Methodist Church, 256 South Arnold Avenue, Prestonsburg, Kentucky 41653.
Visitation will be 4 p.m., until 8 p.m., today, at Carter Funeral Home.
Pallbearers: Fred Culvertson, Keith Shannon, Brian Holbrook, Derek Hicks, Jim Combs, Ronnie Slone, Jerry Patton, and Jerry Meek.
Carter Funeral Home is serving the Howard family.
