Freda Adkins Compton
Freda Adkins Compton, 74, of Corbin, Ky., formerly of Prestonsburg, died Tuesday, September 11, 2001, at the Marymount Medical Center.
Born June 2, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Willie Adkins and Tina Christian Adkins. She was a former teacher of the Floyd County School system and was a member of the Ky. Retired Teachers Association, and Miriam Rebekah Lodge No. 31.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Compton.
Survivors include one son, Gary Compton of Corbin, Ky.; one brother, David Adkins of Prestonsburg, Ky.; one sister, Wilabe France of Nicholasville, Ky.; two grandsons, Jason Earl Compton of Las Vegas, Nev., Wesley Edward Compton of Corbin, Ky.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, September 13, at 10:00 a.m., at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel, Prestonsburg, Ky., with Rev. Bobby Carpenter officiating.
Interment was in the Mayo Cemetery, Prestonsburg, Ky.
Active pallbearers: Don Collins, Steven Adkins, Larry France, Wesley Compton, Gerald Wheeler and Mikey Wheeler.

Claude Mullins
Claude Mullins, 70, of Saint Mary’s Ohio, formerly of Floyd County, died Tuesday, September 18, 2001, at his residence, after a brief illness.
Born February 12, 1931, at Bevinsville, Ky., he was the son of the late Menda Hall Mullins and Jona Mullins. He retired from Good-Year after 40 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; one daughter, Nancy, and two sons, Jerry and Barry.
He is also survived by three brothers, Johnnie Mullins of Oil Springs, Ky., Carlos Mullins of Celina, Ohio, Clyde Mullins of Circleville, Ohio; and three sisters, Ada Lucas of Oil Springs, Ky., Elizabeth Martin of Printer, Ky., and Angie Prater of Allen, Ky.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, September 21, at Millers, Long, and Folk Funeral Home, Saint Mary’s.

Boone Kilgore
Boone Kilgore, age 85, of Blue River, Ky., passed Thursday, September 20, 2001, at the Riverview Manor Nursing Home, Prestonsburg, Ky., after an extended illness.
He was born October 20, 1915, at Gunlock, Ky. A son of the late John and Minnie (Yates) Kilgore. He was married to Lula (Marsillett) Kilgore, who precedes him in death.
He was retired from the C&O Railroad Co. He was a member of the Third Avenue Freewill Baptist Church, in Prestonsburg, Ky.
He is survived by two sons and four daughters - Mr. Tommy Kilgore, of David, Ky.; Mr. Johnny Kilgore, of Blue River, Ky.; Mrs. Myrtle Adams, of Blue River, Ky.; Mrs. Opal Brown, Mrs. Loujean Shepherd, and Mrs. Ruby Moore, all of David, Ky.
He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Biddie Holbrook, of Jonesville, MI.
There are 19 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted today (Sunday), September 23, 2001, at 1 p.m., from the Burke Funeral Home Chapel, in Prestonsburg, Ky.
Officiating minister will be Rev. Manford Fannin. Burial will be in the Hale Cemetery, at Blue River, Ky. All arrangements under the direction of Burke Funeral Home, Prestonsburg, Ky.
Active pallbearers are Jason Kilgore, Thomas Kilgore, Keith Adams, Steven Moore, Robert J. Shepherd, Columbus Brown, Ricky Brown, and Charles Sparks.

Betty Lou Shepherd
Betty Lou Shepherd, age 54, of Printer, Ky., wife of Roger Lee Shepherd, passed away, Tuesday, September 18, 2001, at the Pikeville Methodist Hospital, Pikeville, Ky. She was born February 10, 1947, in Drift, Ky., the daughter of Virginia Cooper Bray, Drift, Ky., and the late John Bray. Mrs. Shepherd was a cook, employed at Giovanni’s Pizza, and she attended the Drift Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by one son, Ricky Shepherd, Martin, Ky.; four daughters, Loretta Lynn Thacker and Fayetta Hall, both of Dana, Ky., Dorothy Ann McKinney, Hawesville, Ky., and Tonda Sue Thacker, Allen, Ky.; one brother, John Bray, Pikeville, Ky.; four sisters, Mary Shepherd, Hunter, Ky., Helen Walters, Drift, Ky., Sharon Owens, Pikeville, Ky., Bobbie Fish, Mt. Sterling, Ky.; and 13 grandchildren.
Funeral services for Betty Lou Shepherd will be conducted today (Friday) at 1:00 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with the clergymen Ted Shannon and Jobie Shepherd officiating. Burial will follow in the Shepherd Family Cemetery, Martin, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation is at the funeral home.

Trubie Ratliff
Trubie Ratliff, age 81, of Weeksbury, Ky., died Wednesday, September 19, 2001, at Pikeville Methodist Hospital, following a brief illness. Born on June 20, 1920, at Lookout, Ky., he was the son of the late Bee and Maudie Bowling Ratliff.
He was a retired coal miner, a veteran of World War II, and a member of the UMWA Local No. 9639, Jenkins.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Skiles Ratliff; two daughters, Scottie Sue Carter and husband, Richard, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; and Sandra Joe Johnson and husband, Joseph, of Melvin, Ky.; four brothers, Billy T. Sanders, and Larry Ray Sanders, both of Taylor, Mich., Ernest Sanders, of Weeksbury, Ky., and Robert G. Sanders, of Henderson, Ky.; three sisters, Florene Fields, of Elkhorn City, Ky., and Norma Lou Sword and Peggy Sue Mullins, both of Taylor, Mich.; five grandsons, Darren Johnson, Jeremy Johnson, Heath Carter, Gavin Carter, and Ian Carter; and three great-grandchildren, Landon Johnson, Skylar Johnson, and Austin Carter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Gordon E. Sanders, Kent Douglas Ratliff, and Bussey Ratliff; and one sister, Irene McMillian.
Funeral services for Trubie Ratliff will be conducted Sunday, September 23, 2001, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Evangelist Bennie Blakenship officiating. Burial will be in the Ratliff-Sanders Cemetery, Weeksbury, Ky., under the direction of the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation will be at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home after 6 p.m., Friday, where friends may call.

William “Bill” Arrowood Jr.
William “Bill” Arrowood Jr., age 89, of Drift, Ky., husband of the late Ruth Turner Arrowood, passed away Thursday, September 13, 2001, at the Riverview Health Care Center, Prestonsburg, Ky. He was born October 4, 1911, in Meally, Ky., the son of the late Willie K. Arrowood and Rose Preston Arrowood. Mr. Arrowood was a retired businessman. He operated four businesses in the Drift area. He ran an auto parts store in Martin, a Standard Oil service station, a cafe/ newstand and a restaurant/ bus stop. In 1946, he purchased the Morrell Supply Company, Prestonsburg, Ky., and renamed the company Wm. Arrowood Hardware Company, which he operated, along with his wife, for nearly 30 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Irene Cole Memorial, Prestonsburg, Ky., a former member of the Floyd County Chamber of Commerce, a life member of Zebulon Lodge, No. 273, and a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include one son, Larry Arrowood, Brentwood, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Julie Arrowood Edwards, William Robert Arrowood; and one great-grandchild, Justin Keith Edwards.
Funeral services for William Arrowood were conducted Sunday, September 16, 2001, at 1:00 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with Clergyman Ted Shannon officiating. Burial followed in the Turner Cemetery, Drift, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Pallbearers for William “Bill” Arrowood were Randy Burke, Bill Jennings, Rick Jennings, Robert Elliott, Tommy Burke, Jody Spriggs, and Tim Maggard.

Goldie Wills Calhoun
Goldie Wills Calhoun, age 86, of Prestonsburg, Ky., died Friday, September 14, 2001, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, Ky., following an extended illness.
Born on January 21, 1915, at Floyd County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Richard Wills and Mary Bingham Wills. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Dode Calhoun; four sons, Doug Calhoun, of Warsaw, Ind., Clarence Calhoun, of Sidney, Ohio; David Calhoun and Wallace Calhoun, both of Prestonsburg, Ky.; four daughters, Donna Jean Muncy, Mary Agnes Dawson, Patricia Gibson, and Beulah Seals, all of Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Ruble Fields, of Titusville, Florida; 18 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by two sons, Bill Calhoun and Gordon Calhoun; one brother, Bill Bunker Wills; and four sisters, Josephine, Lula, Darcus, and Hamie.
Mrs. Calhoun was a member of the Trimble Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, Water Gap, Ky.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, September 17, 2001, at 11:00 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Clergyman Steve Hazelett officiating. Burial followed in the Mayo Cemetery, Lancer, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.

Steven Richard Hamilton
Steven Richard Hamilton, age 10, of Ligon, Ky., passed away Thursday, September 13, 2001, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington, Ky. He was born March 8, 1991, in Martin, Ky., the son of Ricky Hamilton and Rebecca Slone Hamilton. Steven was a student at Osborne Elementary, and a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church, Hi Hat, Ky.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Tiffany Arlene Hamilton, Ligon, Ky.; maternal grandparents, Elmer and Dorothy Slone, Ligon, Ky.; paternal grandfather, James Hamilton, Teaberry, Ky.; and great-grandmother, Gladys Bentley.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Arlene Hamilton.
Funeral services for Steven R. Hamilton were conducted Monday, September 17, 2001, at 11:00 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with Clergyman Rodney Mosley officiating. Burial followed in the Hamilton Cemetery, Teaberry, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Pallbearers for Steven Richard Hamilton were James Tackett, Rodney Hamilton, Randy Spears, Reed Flannery, Mikey Spears, Tyler Hamilton, Rusty Hall, Greg Slone, Ricky Hamilton, and Elmer Hamilton.
