James Andrew (Preacher) Goble
James Andrew (Preacher) Goble, 87 years of age of Prestonsburg, Ky., was born on November 7, 1914, in Prestonsburg, Ky., the son of the late Christopher C. Goble and Emma Caroline Prater Goble. He departed this life following an extended illness on Saturday, May 25, 2002, at his residence.
He was a retired coal miner; a member of the Trimble Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, a former member of the Floyd County Emergency and Rescue Squad; instructor for National Rifle Association; and assistant Scoutmaster of the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 27, Prestonsburg, Ky.
He was married to Mable Hall Goble, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son and two daughters, James M. Goble, Emma Lou Gray, and Billie Jean Harris, all of Prestonsburg, Ky.; two sisters, Kay Gray of Dayton, Oh., and Lucille Wills of Indiana; 19 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of many relatives and friends who will mourn his passing.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Betty Sue Hunter and Elizabeth J. Conley; one brother, Frankie Goble; and three sisters, Vadie Eden, Gertrude Reatherford, and Margarette Blackburn.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Rev. Joe Coleman, and Rev. Steve Hazelett officiating.
Burial was in the Richmond Cemetery, at Prestonsburg, Ky.

Bruce S. Hall
Bruce S. Hall of Banner, Ky., passed away on Monday, May 20, 2002, in J.J. Jordan Geriatric Center in Louisa, Ky. She was 77 years of age.
She was born April 22, 1925, in West Virginia, a daughter of the late Lucy Hale of Allen, Ky. She was a member of the Allen Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mont Hall.
She is survived by her step-daughter, Betty H. and David Salisbury, both of Catlettsburg, Ky.; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and a host of many friends who will mourn her passing.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at 10 a.m., at Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Rev. James Smith officiating.
Burial will be in the Jones Cemetery, Shortwood, Allen, Ky.
Visitation is before services on Wednesday.

Earrit Merl Hayes
Earrit Merl Hayes, age 88, of Martin, Ky., husband of the late Alice May Hayes, passed away Saturday, May 18, 2002, at the Mary Chiles Hospital, Mt. Sterling, Ky.
He was born March 21, 1914, in Maytown, Ky., the son of the late John Prock Hayes and Daisy Justice Hayes. He was a retired barber, a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, a lifetime member of the D.A.V., Monroe Vanderpool Chapter No. 128, Garrett, Ky., former mayor and city council member of Martin, and a U.S. Army, World War II veteran.
Survivors include one nephew, Ronald Hayes of Winchester, Ky.; one niece, Sandy Hayes Sheffield of Betsy Layne, Ky.; two great-nieces, Heather Hayes Amistadi and Elisa O’Bryan.
Funeral services for Earrit Merl Hayes were conducted Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with the clergymen, Jimmy Hall and Clinton Moore, officiating.
Burial followed in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Pallbearers: Kirt Stamper, Johnny Mayo, Bill Cooley, Buddy Smith, Ernie Holt, Bob Lynn and Roger Sandlin.
Honorary: Clarence Hayes and Julius Moore.

Julia Stratton
Julia Stratton, age 84, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg, Ky.
Born on January 16, 1918, in Floyd County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Miriah and Dorothy Bayes Spradlin. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ at Stanville, Ky.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Stratton.
She is survived by six children, Emma Lou (Lloyd) Hamilton of Stanville, Ky., Zella Mae Price of Lexington, Ky., Vivian (Donald) Conn of Ivel, Ky., Magalene (Paul) Hicks of David, Ky., Elbert (Linda) Stratton Jr. of Teaberry, Ky., and Ailene (and the late D.D.) Cole of Morristown, Tn.; 21 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Martin Spradlin, Mars Spradlin and John Spradlin; and two sisters, Liza Fraley and Minnie Fields.
Funeral service were conducted Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Tommy Bush officiating.
Burial was in the Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.

Orville James Hicks
Orville James Hicks, age 74, of Nelsonville, Oh., died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at the Riverside Methodist Hospital.
He was a retired employee of General Motors, a member of UAW Local 969, and a WW II Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clara and Adam Hicks.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Emogene Hicks; daughters, Alice (Glenn) Wellman of Johnstown, Oh., and Dorothy (Jim) Bower of Westerville, Oh.; sister, Ruth Rowe of Ky.; brothers, Hansel (Marcella) Hicks, and Gene (Alma) Hicks, both of Mi., Curtis (Julie) Hicks, of Az., Tom (Martha) Hicks and Hubbard Hicks, both of Ky.; five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 22, 2002, 2:00 p.m., in the Long Funeral Home, 5528 Cleveland Avenue (one block south of St. Rt. 161).
Interment will follow in the Blendon Central Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Skunza Funeral Service, 5528 Cleveland Avenue.

Ida Jervis
Ida Jervis, age 54, of Langley, Ky., wife of Earl Jervis, passed away Friday, May 17, 2002, at her residence.
She was born August 29, 1947, in Martin, Ky., the daughter of Pearl Conn Samons of Langley, Ky., and the late Seymore Samons. She was a homemaker, and a member of the Arkansas Church of Christ.
In addition to her mother and husband, she is survived by two sons, Mark Jervis of Langley, Ky., and Robert Earl (Misty) Jervis of Hippo, Ky.; one daughter, Emma Lou (Larry) Wells of Auxier, Ky.; three grandchildren, Makayla Marie Wells, Larry Lance Wells II, and Hannah Raen Jervis.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, May 19, 2002, at 2 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with the clergyman, Ronnie Samons, officiating.
Burial followed in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Pallbearers: Chris May, Lenard Hall, Harold Dixon, Randy Conn, Travis Conn, Aaron Sparkman, and Steve Slone.

Judith Carol Hager Stambaugh
Judith Carol Hager Stambaugh, age 52, was born on June 12, 1949, in Prestonsburg, Ky. She was the daughter of the late Harry and Geraldine Nelson Hager. She departed this life following an extended illness on Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at the Paul B. Hall Medical Center in Paintsville, Ky. She was a retired State Parks employee. She attended the Pentecostal Church.
She is survived by her husband, Phillip Stambaugh of Sikta, Ky.
Other survivors include four daughters, Beverly Adkins Burchett of Auxier, Ky., Lequita Danielle Robinson of Hunter; LaGaya Sue Evans and Patsy Deskins, both of LaFollette, Tenn.; two sons, Phillip Rodney Stambaugh and Benjamin Michael Stambaugh, both of Tampa, Fla.; one brother, Samuel Francis (Sammy) Hager; three sisters, Barbara Jean Estep of Flatgap, Ky., Lou Alice Gullett of Dayton, Oh., and Edith Dotson of Prestonsburg, Ky.; and 16 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, May 18, 2002, at 2 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, in Martin, Ky., with Tommy Nelson officiating.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Auxier Relocation Cemetery, at Auxier, Ky.
Pallbearers: Keith Burchett, Daniel Adkins, Bobby Estep, Sam Estep, Robert (Red) Conley, Josh Evans and Jay Daniels.

Willis Howard
Willis Howard Jr., age 65, of Hippo, Ky., husband of Ethel Shepherd Howard, passed away Friday, May 10, 2002, in Hippo, Ky.
He was born April 23, 1937, in Magoffin County, the son of the late Willis Howard and Aggie Ousley Howard. He was retired from Columbia Gas Co., and was a member of the Trace Fork Salt Lick United Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Paul Howard Jr., of Hippo, Ky.; one daughter, Emma Jean “Jeannie” Howard of Hippo, Ky.; a niece he raised, Lisa Gail Marcos of Lexington, Ky.; one brother, Rady Howard of Gunlock, Ky.; two sisters, Edith Shepherd of Gunlock, Ky., and Thelma Conn of Banner, Ky.; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Gold Howard; one grandchild, Anthony Willis Howard; and two brothers, Cledith and Frank Howard.
Funeral services for Willis Howard Jr., were conducted Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with Clergymen Bethel Bolen and Jerry Manns officiating.
Burial followed in the Howard Family Cemetery, Hippo, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
