Phyllis Fraley Esham
Phyllis Fraley Esham, age 81, of Wayland, Ky., passed away on Friday, March 1, 2002, in the Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg, after an extended illness.
Phyllis was born, September 17, 1920, in Danville, Illinois, the daughter of the late Otto and Grace Webb Crawford.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her first husband, the late Sam Fraley.
She is survived by her husband, D.C. Esham; one son, Ronnie Fraley of Somerset, Ky.; three daughters, Barbara Finnerty of Canal Winchester, Ohio, Grace Taylor and Carolyn Puckett, both of Wayland, Ky.; two sisters, Sarah Brooks and Dorothy Lenover, both of Danville, Illinois.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, March 4, 2002, in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel in Martin, Ky., with Matthew Adams officiating.
Burial was in the Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel, Ky., under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home.
Pallbearers: Cory Howard, Larry Puckett, Sam Taylor, Tommy Taylor, Chis Bailey, Nick Northrup, and David Finnerty.

Walter C. Gunnell
Walter C. Gunnell, age 81, of Martin, Ky., husband of Audrey Stumbo Gunnell, passed away Friday, March 1, 2002, at the Paul B. Hall Medical Center, Paintsville, Ky., following a brief illness.
He was born November 14, 1920, in Emma, Ky., the son of the late James Walter Gunnell and Joda Stratton Gunnell. Mr. Gunnell was retired from Columbia Gas and Natural Resources as a field and office worker, he was an U.S. Air Force, World War II veteran, and a member of the Pleasant Home Baptist Church.
Survivors, other than his wife, include two sons, Winston J. Gunnell of Prestonsburg, Ky., and Anthony Lyle Gunnell of Martin, Ky.; one brother, Adrian Gunnell of Panama City Fl.; and one grandchild, Ashley Nicole Gunnell.
Funeral services for Walter C. Gunnell were conducted Sunday, March 3, 2002, at 10:30 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, Ky., with Mark Tackett and Richard Ginn officiating.
Burial was in the family cemetery, Salisbury, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation was at the funeral home.

Sally Ellen Manns
Sally Ellen Manns, 88, of Allen, Ky., died Sunday, March 3, 2002, following an extended illness.
Born on July 20, 1913, in Floyd County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Anderson Hicks and Sarah Jane Allen Hicks. She was a homemaker, and a member of the Old Time Baptist Church, Printer, Ky.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Manns.
Survivors include one son, Kennith Manns of Allen, Ky.; three daughters, Verna Johnson, Deanna Reynolds and Deborah Stephens, all of Allen, Ky.; 15 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sons, Mitchell Manns, James Manns, and Junior Manns; two brothers, Luther Hicks and Ed Hicks; three sisters, Ruth Hicks, Birdie Shepherd, and Alice Hicks; three daughters, Edna Blackburn, Anita Manns, and Ethel Manns.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky., with Denzil Sexton and Denver Meade officiating.
Burial will be in the Hicks Cemetery, Hippo, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the funeral home.

Verna Edith Layne
Verna Edith Layne, age 70, of Harold, Ky., wife of Billy E. Layne, passed away, Friday, March 1, 2002, at the Pikeville Methodist Hospital, Pikeville, Ky., following an extended illness.
She was born March 29, 1931, in Harold, Ky., the daughter of the late Lonnie Clark and Martha Conn Clark. Mrs. Layne was a homemaker and a member of the Boldman Freewill Baptist Church, Harold, Ky.
Survivors, other than her husband, include three daughters, Brenda K. Castle of Banner, Ky., Nellie Jean Layne of Harold, Ky., and Gwendolyn Stratton of Ivel, Ky.; one brother, Bobby Jean Clark of Galion, Oh.; seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Verna Edith Layne were conducted Monday, March 4, 2002, at 11:00 a.m., at the Boldman Freewill Baptist Church, Harold, Ky., with Belmont Johnson offificating.
Burial was in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation was at the church.
Pallbearers: Barry Clark, Brandon Castle, Deannie Castle, Darell Castle, Larry Thompson, Devin Thompson, and Randy Smith.

Verlie Frasure
Verlie Frasure, 89, of Galveston, Ky., died Thursday, February 28, 2002, following an extended illness.
Born on September 1, 1912, at Galveston, Ky., she was the daughter of the late John and Fannie Hall Hamilton. She was a homemaker, and a member of the Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Troy Frasure.
Survivors include six sons, Ed Frasure of Pikeville, Ky., Eddie Frasure of Alexandria, Va., Tom Frasure, Glen Frasure, Charles Frasure and Garrett Frasure, all of Galveston, Ky.; one daughter, Geraldine Blankenship of Galveston, Ky.; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Imogene Frasure; two sons, Bert Frasure and Palmer Frasure; two sisters, Ollie Blankenship and Brooke Hall.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, March 4, 2002, at 1 p.m., at her residence at Galveston, Ky., with Tommy Spears, Tommy Dale Bush and Junior Kidd officiating.
Burial will be in the Frasure Family Cemtery, Galveston, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation will be at the funeral home after 2 p.m., Saturday, March 2, 2002, and after 3 p.m., Sunday, March 3, 2002, at her residence at Galveston, Ky.

Dr. James Arnold Campbell
Dr. James Arnold Campbell, age 42, of Prestonsburg, husband of Kelli Jo Whitaker Campbell, passed away Wednesday, February 27, in the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington.
He was born February 16, 1960, in Prestonsburg, a son of Edward Arnold Campbell and Linda Tackett Wright.
He was an employee of Potter Medical Clinic, and loved working with his colleagues and patients.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Oddie Lynne Cooley of Prestonsburg; his stepfather, Rawland Wright and stepmother, Rosa Campbell; and two step-sisters, Terri Ford of Prestonsburg, and Sunni Lynn Banahain of Lexington; one step-niece, Heather Porter, as well as a multitude of friends and colleagues.
At the time of his graduation, Dr. Campbell was one of 60 graduates to receive the Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, WV.
Dr. Campbell graduated with honors, and was president of PSI Sigma Alpha, a National Honorary Osteopathic Academic Fraternity.
He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Allied Health from the University of Kentucky, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and Chemistry from Eastern Kentucky University.
Dr. Campbell was awarded his D.O. degree after successfully completing the four-year WVSOM curriculum. The Osteopathic Medical School curriculum includes two years of basic science study, and two years of clinical rotations.
He completed one year rotating internship at Tucson General Hospital, Tucson, AZ., and three years of Rotation training at the Prestigious Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Additionally, he was treasurer of the Medical staff, Director of Medical Education, and on the Board of Directors for Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg.
Dr. Campbell also served as an adjunct clinical professor at Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine, Pikeville.
Funeral services for Dr. James A. Campbell were conducted Saturday, March 2, at 2 p.m., in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Elder Raymond Lawson officiating.
Burial followed in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, Ivel, with the Hall Funeral Home caring for those arrangements.
Visitation was Friday, at the funeral home

Amy Robinson Boyd
Amy Robinson Boyd, 79, of Arkansas Creek, Martin, died Thursday, February 28, 2002, following an extended illness.
Born on June 26, 1922, at Martin, Ky., she was the daughter of Henry Bascom and Fannie Crum Robinson. She was a homemaker and a member of the Arkansas Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Vance Boyd.
Survivors include four sons, Henry Boyd of Louisville, Ky., Clyde Boyd of Martin, Ky., William Boyd of Celina, Oh., and John Boyd of Clearwater, Fla.; five daughters, Mary Conn of Martin, Ky., Frankie Conley of Van Lear, Ky., Gail Crumley of Shelbyville, Ky., Diane Boyd of Wakeman, Oh., and Fannie Louise (Dot) Boyd of Vermilion, Oh.; 20 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and two step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Martin Virgil Boyd, and Randell (Tad) Boyd; one brother, Edward Robinson; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, March 3, 2002, at 2 p.m., at the Arkansas Church of Christ, with Ronnie Samons, Roy Robinson, and Ronnie Lee Samons officiating.
Burial will be in the Boyd Family Cemetery, Arkansas Creek, Martin, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation was at the funeral home after on Friday, at the residence on Saturday, and the funeral at the church on Sunday.
