Joseph Edward “Eddie Joe” Akers
Joseph Edward “Eddie Joe” Akers, 54, of McDowell, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2003, in the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital, following an extended illness.
He was the son of the late David “Socker” Akers, and Goldie Beatrice Brown Akers.
He was an electrician and coal miner, and was a member of the U.M.W.A.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Kay Akers of McDowell; one son, Joseph C. Akers of McDowell; and one daughter, Lisa Anne Akers of McDowell; four sisters, Doris Little of Price, Patty Lawson of Drift, Sharon Perkins of Printer, and Libby Thompson of Jenkins; and one grandchild, Kelli Suzanne Akers.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Arthur Tackett Jr.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 12, at 1 p.m., in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel at Martin, with Don Fraley Jr., and Louie Ferrari officiating.
Burial was in the Akers Family Cemetery at McDowell, under the professional care of Hall Funeral Home at Martin.
Pallbearers: Jimmy Griffith, Richard Ousley, Benjamin Wright, Donnie Perkins, Willie Holt, Jimmy Bentley, Kevin Wright, and Merrell Moore.

Bernice Caudill
Bernice Caudill, age 83, of McDowell, passed away on Monday, May 24, 2003, in the Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg.
She was born on November 17, 1919, in Pike County, the daughter of the late Henry and Mellie McCown Tackett.
She was a homemaker, and a member of the Little Rosa Old Regular Baptist Church at McDowell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Caudill, a daughter, Betty Jo, and a grandson, Michael Slone.
Survivors include two sons, Garlis Caudill of Morehead, and Benji Caudill of Prestonsburg; one daughter, Eleanor Pike of Lexington; one sister, Mary Belle Osborne of Ashtabula, Ohio, and a half sister, Pauline of Beefhide; six grandchildren, Sherri Ball, Shelia Hall, Patricia Sanders, Whitney Caudill, Joshua Caudill and Shawn Caudill, and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 15, at 11 a.m., in the Little Rosa Old Regular Baptist Church at McDowell, with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will be in the Lucy Hall Cemetery at McDowell, under the professional care of Hall Funeral Home of Martin.

Hershel Howell
Hershel Howell, 87, of Spradlin Branch, Prestonsburg, died Friday, May 2, 2003, at Highlands Regional Medical Cen-ter.
Born on June 9, 1915, in Bonanza, he was the son of the late Enoch Howell and Callie Blair Howell. He was a former truck driver for Spurlock Food Service, a member of the Missionary Baptist Church in West Van Lear; and a member of Zebulon Masonic Lodge No. 273, Prestonsburg.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Norma Collins Howell, on June 19, 2000.
Survivors include two daughters, Saundra Howell of Prestonsburg, and Dolores Ward of Van Lear; two brothers, Estill Howell and Scott Howell, both of Prestonsburg; two sisters, Reba Mae Harris of Enon, Ohio, and Anna Marie DeRossett of Prestonsburg; two grandchildren, Markquita Lee Smith and Michael Neal Ward; three great-grandchildren, Dara Michelle Fannin, Micah Leeann Ward and Joseph Edward Ward; two great-great-grandchildren, Abigail Fannin, and Lindsey Fannin.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 5, at 1 p.m., at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Vernon Slone officiating.
Interment was in the Collins Family Cemetery, Prestonsburg.
Carter Funeral Home is serving the Howell family.

Anderson Newsome
Anderson Newsome, 64, of Beaver, died Monday, May 12, 2003, at his residence.
Born August 18, 1939, at Beaver, he was the son of the late Jarvey and Rhonda Vance Newsome. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the Ligon Freewill Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Faye Ray Newsome.
Other survivors include four sons, Phillip Dale Newsome and James Rufus Newsome, both of Ligon, Charles Dwayne Newsome of Prestonsburg, and Victor Bradley Newsome of Harold; one daughter, Linda Gayheart of Ligon; two brothers, Tivis Newsome and Anthony Newsome, both of McDowell; and one sister, Alice Johnson of Melvin.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Timothy Paul Newsome and Carl Edward Newsome; three brothers, Estill Newsome, Foster Newsome, and Robert Newsome; three sisters, Lula Bell Tackett, Maxie Moore, and Thelma Adams.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 15, at 1 p.m., at the Ligon Freewill Baptist Church, with Freewill Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will be in the Newsome Cemetery at Craynor, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation is at the Ligon Freewill Baptist Church.

Ronnie Duane Blackburn
Ronnie Duane Blackburn, 28, of Minnie, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2003, at the Hazard Appalachian Health Care, Hazard.
He was the son of Ronald Walker Blackburn and Delilah Youmans Blackburn, of Minnie.
He was born January 25, 1975, in McDowell. He graduated from McDowell High School, and Hazard Community College. He graduated in heavy equipment.
Survivors include his parents and his paternal grandmother, Alberta Blackburn of Drift.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Walker Blackburn, and his maternal grandparents, George Henry Youmans and Kathryn Youmans.
Funeral services for Ronnie Duane Blackburn were conducted Sunday, May 11, at 11 a.m., at the Old Beaver Regular Baptist Church, at Minnie, with Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Allen Cemetery, at Minnie, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Pallbearers: Brett Traller, Jordan Youmans, Chris Ousley, John Paul Sexton, Ryan Shannon, Jared Conn, Tim Stumbo, Earl Cook, Scott Stanley, and James Scott Stumbo.
Honorary: Darrel Youmans, David Turner, William Turner, Duane Youmans, Tim Maggard, and Buggy Stumbo.

Mary Lavada (Shortie) Crider
Mary Lavada (Shortie) Crider, 61 of Auxier, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2003, at her home, following an extended illness.
She was born December 9, 1941, a daughter of the late James and Myrtle (Goble) Childers.
She was married to Darvin Crider, who preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, Joseph Crider of Dixon, Missouri; three sisters and one brother, Opal Hopkins of Midland Pennsylvania, Nola Hopkins of Hookstown, Pennsylvania, and Yovonne Hyden of Westville, Virginia; James Childers of Wynona Lake, Indiana; and one grandson, Samuel Crider.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 13, at 1 p.m., at the Auxier Freewill Baptist Church.
Burial followed in the Goble Family Cemetery at Auxier.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Burke Funeral Home, Prestonsburg.
Visitation was at the funeral home.

Bobby Gene Lewis
Bobby Gene Lewis, age 69, of Ypsilanti, Michigan, formerly of Banner, husband of Belva Mae Endicott Lewis, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2003, in the Superior Woods Nursing Home, Ypsilanti, Michigan.
He was born January 30, 1934, in Banner, the son of the late Elder K. Lewis and Jessie Dillon Lewis. He was a member of the Holmes Road Freewill Baptist Church of Ypsilanti, Michigan, and was a retired parts inspector for Ford Motor Company.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four brothers, James Lewis and Birkey Lewis, both of Banner, Chester Lewis of Stanton, and Forrest Lewis of Prestonsburg; two sisters, Katheryn Sizemore of Lexington, and Genevieve Lewis of Prestonsburg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Frederick Lewis and Glenn Edward Lewis; and two sisters, Josephine Tate and Mary E. Lewis.
Funeral services for Bobby Gene Lewis were conducted Sunday, May 4, at 1 p.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Clergymen Roger Music and Douglas Lewis officiating.
Burial was in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
